When Thompson Squarersquos new album Masterpiece goes on sale June 1 the duo will officially join a growing legion of country artists who are redrawing the lines in their business

Keifer and Shawna Thompson are issuing the project on their own T2 label expanding a l ist of ar t ists who have sel f-r ele a s e d t h e i r projec t s It rsquos a free-wheeling c o n c e p t t h a t just 10-15 years ago was out of the question for the majorit y of a c t s B u t w it h a n i n c r e a s i n g n u m b e r o f outside services and marketing information available it has become more attractive for creators to don a business cap and risk capital on themselves Itrsquos an approach fraught with financial danger but itrsquos also a huge opportunity to establish their own niche in terms of sound look marketing plan and business structure

ldquoThrilling is the perfect wordrdquo says Shawna of the endeavor ldquoItrsquos a little bit scary but super exciting at the same timerdquo

Artists are writing different scripts as the concept catches on

Such acts as Scotty McCreery Maren Morris Chris Janson Luke Combs and Granger Smith self-released product on their own before a label picked them up Others have started that jour-ney without knowing if theyrsquoll land somewhere else or remain

who are overseeing their own careers as well as signing other acts or individual projects including Toby Keith John Prine Aaron Watson and Colt Ford

off to the races mdash that was your marketing plan But in the other genres of music mdash punk hip-hop you name it mdash therersquos always been that self-releasing spirit The country genre is really just kind of catching uprdquo

Indeed country has traditionally lived and died by the single particularly when the audience skewed older and was less apt to actively seek out new music radio was by far the largest driver Itrsquos still the most effective marketing tool but streaming and other digital services have made it easier for artists to distribute their music and pinpoint where it has made a dent

ldquoIrsquom able to see my highest-streaming cities and wersquore working on actually routing a tour around thatrdquo says Pope ldquoItrsquos really fun to have that proof and say lsquoOK clearly these places like the music so letrsquos just hit those places where we know people are going to come outrsquo rdquo

This brave new world is made possible by the shift from physical product to digital The costs for getting music into the hands of consumers is significantly reduced and that lessens the control that the major labels have over the marketplace They remain the big dogs but the new model encourages acts to find their own artistic direction and develop their own audience before they sign a deal

ldquoI feel grateful that I got to do two years independentlyrdquo says Shorr who has found her own rock-influenced sound beyond the filter mdash and pressure mdash that exists at a larger label ldquoI think it would have taken me longer to come around to thisrdquo

Prine was way ahead of the curve He established Oh Boy more than three decades ago relying on direct-mail marketing long before the internet matured His latest album The Tree of Forgiveness debuted at No 2 on Top Country Albums his best showing in a career that has lasted more than 40 years Atlantic issued his self-titled debut but his folk-tinged songs didnrsquot attract much airplay and he determined that his business wasnrsquot well-suited for the big machine

ldquoMajor labels do a great service but Johnrsquos not going to get on country radio in the first place so we donrsquot need a major label deal for thatrdquo says Oh Boy director of operations Jody Whelan ldquoWersquove known who our fans are for 50 years wersquove got a great mailing list and Johnrsquos shows have always done well We figured out how to reach people and now thatrsquos kind of become turbo-chargedrdquo

The self-directed label is particularly popular in Texas where such artists as Josh Abbott Band Cody Johnson and Casey Donahew have parlayed busy touring schedules into album sales JAB and Pat Green tried to nationalize their audiences by hooking up with major labels only to retreat to their previous approaches Watson is going at it differently by maintaining his own imprint and so far it has worked mdash he earned his first top 10 single with ldquoOutta Stylerdquo and current single ldquoRun Wild Horsesrdquo is at No 54 on the Country Airplay chart dated May 19

ldquoDestiny picked this path in some ways more than we picked itrdquo says Watsonrsquos manager CDA Entertainment president Gino Genaro ldquoItrsquos certainly not the easiest path But itrsquos that old baseball analogy you know Yoursquore going to miss 100 percent of the balls you donrsquot swing atrdquo

It is likely not a road for every artist Crunching numbers and building strategies from raw data is a different pursuit than delivering an emotion through a microphone But the right team of advisers can go a long way to bridge the gap between those two mind-sets if the artist is up to the challenge

ldquoI definitely have to make myself pay attention if Irsquom on a conference call with [digital-marketing firm] M Theory and my managerrdquo concedes Pope ldquoI know this is information that I should have [even though] itrsquos not why I started singingrdquo

The numbers though are a representation of a personal connection A digital download or concert-ticket sale occurs because a consumer felt a need to own a song or an experience That same personal connection exists on the business side a leap in logic that Thompson Square was able to make early on

ldquoI kept a journal after we left every radio station of names wivesrsquo names kidsrsquo names dog namesrdquo says Keifer ldquoYou have a bit of a background so you can get to know them a little bit because you have so little time We had the presence of mind to do thatrdquo

Self-releasing is more difficult than the old-school model of signing with a label and expecting it to carry the ball But with so many tools available to modern artists the ones who establish a sound a fan base and relationships inside the business have an upper hand whether they choose to carry on alone or team eventually with a major

ldquoIrsquom always down for artists who work harder and do morerdquo says Shorr ldquoThose are the people you work for the mostrdquo

When MCA Nashville prepared for the launch of Jordan Davisrsquo first single the label had an enviable dilemma Two different titles were in the running and both had a plausible chance of actually working As a result broadcasters played a major role in deciding how his career would get off the ground

ldquoWe kind of went to radio with both of themrdquo says Davis ldquoHalf the team liked lsquoTake It From Mersquo half the team liked lsquoSingles You Uprsquo I was kind of tornrdquo

ldquoSingles You Uprdquo clearly won out mdash it hit No 1 on the Country Airplay chart dated April 21 MCA didnrsquot waste much time in following up The label released ldquoTake It From Merdquo on the PlayMPE platform on April 24 accomplishing two goals in the process providing radio an uptempo song from an artist it has already embraced and further identifying Davis as an artist

ldquo lsquoTake It From Mersquo is a little bit more who I amrdquo he says

Meaning hersquos an artist whorsquos all about sex

ldquoNordquo he says with a laugh ldquoThe rapid-fire phrasing the RampB influence I think is a little more who I am as an artist Itrsquos kind of one of my traits I feel like when it comes to songwriting But yeah it definitely doesnrsquot hold back as far as lyric contentrdquo

Indeed after a grinding guitar riff intros the song ldquoTake It From Merdquo finds a couple debating whether to take off for some personal time at his place By the end of the chorus the guy is confident in strutting his stuff ldquoI got what you needTake it from merdquo Itrsquos easy to interpret the ldquoitrdquo as a specific body part

ldquoI never really thought about it until the first time I played the demo for somebodyrdquo says Davis ldquoThey were like lsquoDude thatrsquos kind of dirty Yoursquore telling her just to take it from yoursquo And I was like lsquoNo itrsquos take my time take my T-shirt take everythingrsquo Hersquos like lsquoYou know people arenrsquot going to think thatrsquo I hope we wrote it well enough to let people get what wersquore talking about but Irsquom a little nervous about somebody taking it that wayrdquo

ldquoWe didnrsquot put them under the sheetsrdquo adds Jordanrsquos brotherco-writer Black River recording artist Jacob Davis

That ldquoTake It From Merdquo title was Jacobrsquos original idea a passing line he heard in another song that played on the radio as he and his wife returned to Nashville from a weekend trip He brought the phrase up when the Davis brothers had a songwriting appointment in mid-2015 with Jason Gantt at Bob DiPierorsquos Love Monkey Music offices on Music Row The original idea was to treat the phrase in its more frequent colloquial context mdash ldquoTake it from me donrsquot dohelliprdquo mdash and Gantt had a soul-flavored track that seemed to fit the bill

ldquoThat was the first one I pushed Play onrdquo says Gantt ldquoJordan just started singing a melody on it almost immediately so we just went with that onerdquo

When the original lyrical direction failed to jell Davis suggested they turn the ldquotake it from merdquo concept into a couple thatrsquos so synched up that the guy is willing to let her take any personal possession she wants He threw out a T-shirt as the first example and Jacob helped flesh out the idea mdash ldquoItrsquos my favorite but you can keep itrdquo mdash and that single clothing item ballooned into the first half of the chorus Davis added a visual image of the woman running her finger down

the wall in the hallway and it helped amp up the sense of pheromones at playThe verses filled out quickly and Davis conceived a bridge that turned

the woman into the ultimate taker a thief who steals kisses mdash with the guyrsquos approval Once the song was finished the demo provided a potentially awkward moment Both brothers are artists and theyrsquod written it without concern about who would get it

ldquoJordan just sort of took the micrdquo recalls Gantt ldquoI didnrsquot even have to ask which one was going to sing it I was glad he took ownershiprdquo

Ganttrsquos demo had more of an acoustic f lavor to it and after Davis signed with MCA it influenced the first production of the song But Davis scrapped the first round of tracks and started working with producer Paul DiGiovanni a co-writer of Dan + Shayrsquos ldquoHow Not Tordquo and ex-guitarist with the Boston-bred pop-rock band Boys Like Girls DiGiovanni used the original demo as a starting point as he programmed a heavier-hitting version in his home studio

ldquoThe intro guitar lick is the same and all the musical stuff is the same but I just kind of tried to put it all on steroidsrdquo says DiGiovanni ldquoIt was a great blueprintrdquo

They recorded it among four tracks mdash including ldquoSingles You Uprdquo mdash on Oct 21 2016 at Sound Stage on Music Row with the musicians working alongside DiGiovannirsquos recorded foundation The verses use a pulsing keyboard that resembles Kool amp The Gangrsquos ldquoLadies Nightrdquo or ldquoJoannardquo but itrsquos soon covered by a wall of sound Drummer Nir Z gives it

a forceful back beat bass player Tony Lucido applies choice rolling funk lines and Derek Wells Bryan Sutton and DiGiovanni combine to layer multiple guitar threads Austin Jenckes a former competitor on The Voice yells ldquoTake it from merdquo in the background on the chorus DiGiovanni tossed extra candy into the production too including a low tone at the end of the bridge that sounds like a cellphone vibrating on a desk

ldquoThatrsquos just a moment of mass insanity before everything drops out so therersquos probably like 10 things that are showing up right thererdquo he says

After living with the more acoustic demo for 16 months Davis and DiGiovanni changed the phrasing a bit and it proved problematic for Davis who kept tweaking the vocal for weeks on end

ldquoI would get a mix back and I was just like lsquoMan I could sing that betterrsquo rdquo says Davis ldquoI probably drove him crazy I would just be like lsquoDude can I resing the second line of the second versersquo And he would just be like lsquoUgh all right come over tomorrowrsquo It was a whole lot of thatrdquo

ldquoTake It From Merdquo comes along at an interesting moment for the Davis brothers Another of their co-writes is being considered for Jacobrsquos sophomore single expected this summer And after the No 1 success of ldquoSingles You Uprdquo ldquoTake Itrdquo mdash which ranks at No 3 on the current New amp Active chart mdash is set up to do well at radio Itrsquos so relentlessly upbeat that itrsquos hard to even pay attention to the lyrics however one ultimately decides to interpret them

ldquoOne of the things that makes lsquoTake It From Mersquo special is that itrsquos tough to get past how good that song feelsrdquo says Davis ldquoIt really doesnrsquot matterrdquo

off to the races mdash that was your marketing plan But in the other genres of music mdash punk hip-hop you name it mdash therersquos always been that self-releasing spirit The country genre is really just kind of catching uprdquo

Indeed country has traditionally lived and died by the single particularly when the audience skewed older and was less apt to actively seek out new music radio was by far the largest driver Itrsquos still the most effective marketing tool but streaming and other digital services have made it easier for artists to distribute their music and pinpoint where it has made a dent

ldquoIrsquom able to see my highest-streaming cities and wersquore working on actually routing a tour around thatrdquo says Pope ldquoItrsquos really fun to have that proof and say lsquoOK clearly these places like the music so letrsquos just hit those places where we know people are going to come outrsquo rdquo

This brave new world is made possible by the shift from physical product to digital The costs for getting music into the hands of consumers is significantly reduced and that lessens the control that the major labels have over the marketplace They remain the big dogs but the new model encourages acts to find their own artistic direction and develop their own audience before they sign a deal

ldquoI feel grateful that I got to do two years independentlyrdquo says Shorr who has found her own rock-influenced sound beyond the filter mdash and pressure mdash that exists at a larger label ldquoI think it would have taken me longer to come around to thisrdquo

Prine was way ahead of the curve He established Oh Boy more than three decades ago relying on direct-mail marketing long before the internet matured His latest album The Tree of Forgiveness debuted at No 2 on Top Country Albums his best showing in a career that has lasted more than 40 years Atlantic issued his self-titled debut but his folk-tinged songs didnrsquot attract much airplay and he determined that his business wasnrsquot well-suited for the big machine

ldquoMajor labels do a great service but Johnrsquos not going to get on country radio in the first place so we donrsquot need a major label deal for thatrdquo says Oh Boy director of operations Jody Whelan ldquoWersquove known who our fans are for 50 years wersquove got a great mailing list and Johnrsquos shows have always done well We figured out how to reach people and now thatrsquos kind of become turbo-chargedrdquo

The self-directed label is particularly popular in Texas where such artists as Josh Abbott Band Cody Johnson and Casey Donahew have parlayed busy touring schedules into album sales JAB and Pat Green tried to nationalize their audiences by hooking up with major labels only to retreat to their previous approaches Watson is going at it differently by maintaining his own imprint and so far it has worked mdash he earned his first top 10 single with ldquoOutta Stylerdquo and current single ldquoRun Wild Horsesrdquo is at No 54 on the Country Airplay chart dated May 19

ldquoDestiny picked this path in some ways more than we picked itrdquo says Watsonrsquos manager CDA Entertainment president Gino Genaro ldquoItrsquos certainly not the easiest path But itrsquos that old baseball analogy you know Yoursquore going to miss 100 percent of the balls you donrsquot swing atrdquo

It is likely not a road for every artist Crunching numbers and building strategies from raw data is a different pursuit than delivering an emotion through a microphone But the right team of advisers can go a long way to bridge the gap between those two mind-sets if the artist is up to the challenge

ldquoI definitely have to make myself pay attention if Irsquom on a conference call with [digital-marketing firm] M Theory and my managerrdquo concedes Pope ldquoI know this is information that I should have [even though] itrsquos not why I started singingrdquo

The numbers though are a representation of a personal connection A digital download or concert-ticket sale occurs because a consumer felt a need to own a song or an experience That same personal connection exists on the business side a leap in logic that Thompson Square was able to make early on

ldquoI kept a journal after we left every radio station of names wivesrsquo names kidsrsquo names dog namesrdquo says Keifer ldquoYou have a bit of a background so you can get to know them a little bit because you have so little time We had the presence of mind to do thatrdquo

Self-releasing is more difficult than the old-school model of signing with a label and expecting it to carry the ball But with so many tools available to modern artists the ones who establish a sound a fan base and relationships inside the business have an upper hand whether they choose to carry on alone or team eventually with a major

ldquoIrsquom always down for artists who work harder and do morerdquo says Shorr ldquoThose are the people you work for the mostrdquo
