Do You See Me

Holy One just as your eye is on the sparrow grant us vision to both see and respond in love to the most vulnerable among us Amen

This weekrsquos scripture readings take as a given that the transcendent love and justice of God stands outside historical time thereby providing a way of seeing that

is unfiltered by the biases of domination powers This apoca-lyptic end-time way of seeing enables us to recognize and respond to the justice manifest in the realm of God

Ezekiel 3411ndash16 20ndash24 imagines an end time in which a clear distinction is made between living in faithfulness to Godrsquos liberation and justice or aligning onersquos life with the forces of oppression Psalm 100 is a vital and essential re-minder that true love of God and a life of deep joy go hand in hand and Ephesians 115ndash23 continues the association of seeing with onersquos heart identifying such seeing with hope and the working of Christ in whom the fullness of Godrsquos love and justice reside

Matthew 2531ndash46 Do you see the people who are suffering especially those who are most often neglected According to Matthew this is a critical question for the early Christians who were seeking to live the realm of God values proclaimed by Jesus It remains a crucial question for Christians today Our responses make clear how we understand and live in faithfulness to the commandments upon which Jesus says all the law and the prophets hang ldquolsquoYou shall love the Lord your Godrdquo and ldquoYou shall love your neighbour as your-selfrdquo (Matthew 2237-40) ldquoDo you see merdquo is a question that clings to the lips of the hungry the thirsty the stranger the naked the sick and the imprisoned According to Jesus if love allows us to see those who suffer the least among us then we also see Christ

Biblical scholars refer to this weekrsquos gospel passage as the ldquoLast Judgmentrdquo coming as the climactic conclusion to Jesus speaking about the end times This however has nothing to do with who believes the ldquorightrdquo things about Jesus or belongs to the ldquorightrdquo religious tradition The final judgment is a theological metaphor that directly addresses the commandment of loving God and loving neighbour In short ldquoDo you see merdquo is an ethical end-time question drawn from apocalyptic theology It sharpens the contrast

between the world as we know it and the world as it will be when the realm-of-God values of love justice and liberation are fully realized

ldquoDo you see merdquo broadens the boundaries of neighbour-love to include all those Jesus directly names as the least of these In our day this most certainly includes all creation For the early Christians to whom the gospel of Matthew is written ldquoDo you see merdquo and its inevitable counterpart ldquoHow will you respondrdquo comes with no small measure of risk Surrounded by the casualties of Roman imperial domination it was certainly easier and safer to avoid seeing Not only could you focus exclusively on your own needs and desires but your failure to see also meant you were less likely to garner the attention of the powers who kept this unjust system in place

Drawing upon the ethical clarity of this apocalyptic end-time theology Jesus makes it clear to the early Christians as he makes clear to us that the only way to participate in the realm of God is if we see and respond to the most vulnerable in our midst Feed the hungry give water to the thirsty welcome the stranger clothe the naked care for the sick visit the imprisoned These are our neighbours According to Jesus if you see these members of my family and respond you see Christ and respond If you love them you love God ldquoDo you see merdquo might seem overwhelming except for the assurance given earlier in Matthew that the one who calls us to see has first of all seen us (Matthew 625 26)

bull bull bull bull bullIf this weekrsquos apocalyptic texts were only or primarily about a final judgment coming at the end of the world or the end our lives they might easily be dismissed Instead these scriptures challenge us with the opportunity to see and respond to the world today through the lens of Godrsquos tran-scendent love and justice How do you see the love of Christrsquos presence among those most often ignored How might you respond with dignity respect and mutuality rather than a paternalism that fails to see their fundamental value that fails to see Christ

Reflection and Focus bull November 22 2020

Adapt and use for youth and adult studies sermon seeds lay worship teams

Reflecting on the WordSeason of Creation Pentecost 2 2020

Connecting with life When have you felt like you were invisible ndash as if no one

cared that you were present When have you needed support and that need was

both recognized and responded to What difference did it make for you when your need

was acknowledged and addressed

Scripture Ezekiel 34 draws upon the image of fat sheep that abuse and exploit sheep that are lean leaving no doubt that the justice of God is with those who are vulnerable and in need

What examples can you give of ways in which injustice sustains privilege for some while those denied justice continue to suffer

In what way might the work of justice for the vulnerable and exploited be a sacred calling

Psalm 100 continues the agrarian metaphor of sheep offer-ing an intimate image of what it means to live in relationship with a God whose faithfulness and love is steadfast To live in this love is to experience true joy

How does joy advance the cause of justice What relationship does joy have to a love that endures

Ephesians 115ndash23 asserts there is no power greater than the love revealed in Christ Not even the power of death can thwart this love

What makes love so powerful When have you experienced or witnessed the power of love giving hope when there appeared little reason for hope

Matthew 2531ndash46 It can be tempting to take Matthewrsquos apocalyptic end-time theology as a final verdict on our lives Have we succeeded or have we failed in living according to the call of Christ In reality the primary goal of the end time theology employed by Matthew encourages us to live as though the realm of God is fully present Apocalyptic theology puts a mirror on our present-day by holding out the fullness of Godrsquos love and justice as our standard now

Who are the people today whose humanity becomes invisible

How do people respond differently when the humanity of the ldquoleast of theserdquo is seen

What difference might it make today if creation is recognized as among the ldquoleast of theserdquo

How might seeing the ldquoleast of theserdquo be risky What dangers are posed in ldquoseeingrdquo

Connecting scripture and lifeOn this Reign of Christ Sunday an exclamation point is placed on the biblical affirmation that Godrsquos realm inverts the understanding of power embraced by systems of dom-ination Rather than a hierarchy of exploitation and privilege benefiting a few at the top the power of love revealed in Christ is found among the least of these and those often overlooked

In what ways might you and your community of faith respond to the least of these

Recent reports in the Americas tell us that since the 1970s we have likely lost 30 of our bird population Among those species hit hardest are sparrows What does it mean to include sparrows among the least of these and what might be your response

If the reign of Christrsquos power is found among the least of these what might that tell about responses that are paternalistic How might you act in ways that recognize the inherent dignity and power of those we often fail to see

Focus for Worship Learning and ServingWhen reading Matthew 2531ndash46 it can be easy to jump to an interpretation of God as an angry and vengeful God who with a punitive heart separates people A more care-ful reading will highlight the fact that Jesus calls attention to the choices we all have ndash choose to live in the ways of Godrsquos realm or the ways of ldquoempirerdquo Followers of Jesus were called ldquoPeople of the Wayrdquo and this text describes what that ldquowayrdquo is Jesus makes clear some practices and choices are part of our liberation culture Ezekiel 3411ndash16 20ndash24 reinforces the image of God as a ldquogood shepherdrdquo who leads in the ways of wholeness and liberation provid-ing tending seeking and protecting us along the way Keep this as the focus rather than getting stuck on the

apparent words of judgment in the gospel of MatthewThis is ldquoReign of Christrdquo Sunday It is the final

Sunday of the church year and the last chapter in the long story of Christ which begins again next week with the return of Advent Consider what it means to come to the ldquoend of the storyrdquo of Jesus Because our lives are lived in cycles there is no end But is there a quasi-ending to which we need to give attention Jesusrsquo invitation is to live so that the ends are a reward for the means ndash the result is accompaniment with Christ in a realm of heaven that embodies all our efforts to live with justice and peace on Earth How might those who gather to worship learn and serve this week be reminded of this

Call to worshipInspired by Psalm 100

One Make a glad noise to God all the Earth In all lan-guages with all timbres and textures let us make a glad noise to God

All God invites us to worship with gladness ndash to come into Godrsquos presence with singing Let us raise our voices and proclaim our joy as we enter into worship

One God is God My friends God is God God made us God claims us as Godrsquos own we are Godrsquos people

All How wonderful it is to remember and recognize that God is Creator Parent Guardian and Guide

One Let us enter the gates of worship with thanksgiving and praise

All And let us give thanks that Godrsquos steadfast love endures forever We have arrived at the end of the

church year but Godrsquos love and the story of Godrsquos Son and Godrsquos people continue forever

One The circle is never unbroken The story continues and the invitation never expires

All Come all generations let us worship God

Opening prayerWe live in a world where hunger thirst loneliness sickness and imprisonment exist for too many people Loving Parent you invite us to participate in the ways of healing and whole-ness that would change this truthIn Jesus the Christ you came among us to show us how to love ndash modelling for us the ways of mercy compassion and justice We hear Paulrsquos words admonishing us to understand Jesus to be ldquoabove all rule and authority and power and dominionhellip

and above every name that is namedhellipin every agerdquo Be with us as we worship and help us to gain strength for the journey which continues beyond this day ndash the journey of choices and forgiveness to which all people of faith are invited as we follow the Christ Be with us and help us to discover your guidance with every opportunity we encounter ndash the guidance of the shepherd ndashthe guidance of Love Incarnate Amen Prayer of confessionIt is sometimes hard to see beyond the ways of the rulers of our times ndash the ways of power-brokering politicization and competitionIt is sometimes hard to speak truth to ldquoauthoritiesrdquo who abuse their privilege and create obstacles to the peopleIt is sometimes hard to turn away from opportunities to join in the domination and exploitation that bleed into so many aspects of our lives It is sometimes hard to resist allowing people of notoriety

to claim space in our imaginations and our hopefulness for the future We confess we are seduced by ease access accolades and ambition and rarely consider that they may come at the costs of othersrsquo wholeness We confess that it is often just too easy to succumb to the constant temptations of our privilege and our situations and proverbially to walk past the suffering all around usForgive us Loving Shepherd and nudge us onto better paths Forgive us and guide us into right relationship Forgive us and teach us to be like Jesus Forgive us and reclaim us we prayBaaa-men (just a little humour)

Words of affirmation God desires our participation in the healing of the world To feed the hungry offer drink to those who thirst welcome the stranger and cloth the naked But when we fail to do so in our contrition God forgives Godrsquos forgiveness is as eternal as Godrsquos love Therefore let us not only be assured of pardon but let us reclaim our place among the people of the Liberation Way and journey on in Godrsquos light Amen

Opening the wordEzekiel 3411ndash16 20ndash24While much of this week focuses on images and examples of when people have hungered and thirsted this text also holds an image of sheep pushing with ldquoflank and shoul-derrdquo In other words times when power has been wielded to diminish others You might make an opportunity to have people either speak out loud situations when they have seen or experienced this ndash or can have examples ready for when this part of the scripture is read

Psalm 100If possible collect ldquonoisesrdquo that could be considered ldquogladrdquo from all kinds of sources animal sounds sounds of nature (water wind fire and so on) human sounds (laughter joy-ful chatter singing and so on) Consider interspersing these into an antiphonal reading of this psalm ndash bringing home to the congregation that it is not only in our worship that ldquoglad noisesrdquo are lifted to God ndash all of creation can make a glad sound

Ephesians 115ndash23This letter is important to any who follow the way of Jesus because it reinforces what the true ldquorewardsrdquo of Christianity are ndash joy in sharing in the love and compassion of God and fullness of life in Godrsquos light This scripture is a snippet of a letter of encouragement Given the heaviness of the fact that our reward for following is not a lack of suffering for our-selves or any material privilege we are called to bolster one another through words of encouragement and praise Invite worshippers to take some time to write a note of praise and

encouragement to someone in their lives acknowledging the difference they have made to some situation of suffering in the world

Moving into Matthew 2531ndash46 the focus scripture for age-level materials in ENCORE

Choose from the following

Bible story Have a storyteller present the story ldquoImaginerdquo (p 166)Reflecting on the scripture What I am whom I have become or how I loveAs Jesus tells of his ldquogloryrdquo he does not divide people among those who are hungry and those who are filled those who thirst and those who are quenched of thirst those who are strangers and those who are known those who are naked and those who are clothed or among those imprisoned and those who are free Jesus distinguishes between those who have shown mercy compassion and love and those who have not

We live in an age that still though we may say we know better imagines that having a ldquogoodrdquo life is an indication of being beloved by God Popular culture and societal stan-dards reinforce this constantly But this scripture ndash and the whole Jesus story ndash claims the opposite There is no external indication of onersquos favour by God There is only the internal knowledge of being loved and accompanied ndash this is the only reward

Prepare an insert in the bulletin with the following statements for worshippers to reflect and respond

Reading the Parables through the Life Death

and Raising of Jesus John Indermark

ldquoA parable ishelliprdquo How would you fill in the blank An earthly story with a heavenly meaning An extended re-ligious metaphor An allegory whose every detail sym-bolizes some spiritual principle

ldquoA parable ishelliprdquo merits caution Parables particularly those of Jesus defy a single ldquoevery size fits allrdquo definition Some are brief some are quite lengthy A very few take the form of allegory but most do not The parables of Jesus typically involve common elements from everyday life in first-century Palestine The world of farmers and merchants the interchange of family and business relationships provide the ldquostuffrdquo of these stories that would have been readily familiar to its original hearers The genius in the parables comes in their transparency That is Jesus frames these stories in such a way that their details or narratives allow us to ldquosee throughrdquo them to catch glimpses of deeper matters In the parables of Jesus those deeper matters focus on Godrsquos coming realm ldquoKingdom of Godrdquo is the usual expression for that realm though Matthew often employs ldquokingdom of heavenrdquo The two phrases carry the same meaning

To read the parables through the life death and raising of Jesus means hearing them in concert with not isolation from Jesusrsquo story Our hearing of the parables of Jesus suffers when we do not keep them in context with the whole of Jesusrsquo particular story Sometimes the context is verbalized in the text Matthew prefaces the parable of the two debtors by indicating it arises out of Peterrsquos question on the limit to the obligation to forgive (1821ndash35) Sometimes the context is provided by where the parable is set in a gospelrsquos structure The three parables from Matthew 25 used as focus passages this

season follow right after Jesusrsquo teachings on the end of the age in chapter 24 Equally revealing they immediately precede Jesusrsquo announcement of his impending death and the authorities who conspire to carry it out by stealth (261ndash5) Even when the text provides no context such as the series of brief parables in the latter half of Matthew 13 we still have the wider setting of Jesusrsquo story with which to interpret the words

The discipline of reading the parables through the life death and raising of Jesus also provides insight into those parables unique to one gospel only For example the story of Jesus for Luke turns on the theme of inclusion for outsiders Thus this gospel relates parables of Good Samaritans and Prodigal Sons Or consider the parable of the faithful sheep from Matthew (2531ndash46) heard in this season Its litany

of feeding the hungry and giving drink to the thirsty and all of the other acts of justice does not arise out of thin air It parallels the works of Jesus that he dispatches the disciples of John the baptizer to go and tell their imprisoned leader It hints at the inaugural text for Jesusrsquo ministry in the Nazareth (Luke 418ndash19)

Why read the parables of Jesus through his life death and raising The key is the modifier in that sentence ldquoof Jesusrdquo The churchrsquos interest in parables is not simply exploring a literary form although that can provide helpful background information The churchrsquos interest in parables is that they are ldquoof Jesusrdquo They provide insight into the mind and heart of Jesus regarding his expectations of Godrsquos realm and how those expectations intend to shape life now In turn we hear these parables against the backdrop of a particular story that helps us interpret these words in connection with the One who taught them

John Indermark is a minister in the United Church of Christ John writes devotional books and Christian Education curricula

and has been a regular contributor to Seasons of the Spirit

Consider the parable of the faithful sheep from Matthew (2531ndash46) heard in this season Its litany of feeding the hungry and giving drink to the thirsty and all of the other acts of justice does not arise out of thin air

The disciples were full of questions They wanted to know when the world would be filled with Godrsquos love and what that world would be like Jesus wasnrsquot

exactly sure when that would be but his stories helped the disciples imagine wonder and think deeply about how we should live Sometimes the disciples found it hard to under-stand

ldquoWhat does a world filled with Godrsquos love look likerdquo the disciples asked again Jesus asked them to use their imagina-tions and imagine a ruler

ldquoImaginerdquo Jesus said ldquopeople from all the nations in the world gathering around the ruler The ruler has been watch-ing the people very closely and whenever the people had lived in Godrsquos loving ways the ruler smiled and felt the love

Biblical Background bull November 22 2020

Seasons of the Spirittrade is based on the semi-continuous readings of the Revised Common Lectionary

Season of Creation Pentecost 2 2020

Ezekiel 3411ndash16 20ndash24Psalm 100Ephesians 115ndash23Matthew 2531ndash46 the focus in age-level materials

The last time I was truly hungry was The last time I thirsted in any real way was The last time I felt like a stranger was The last time I felt vulnerable (ldquonakedrdquo) was The last time I was sick was The last time I was in prison or externally detained in any way was

Invite people to take a few minutes to reflect on these ques-tions and if they are willing to discuss their answers in twos or threes Invite them to notice if any of these have been true for them if not ndash what it feels like to realize onersquos privilege (if this is the case) if so ndash what it feels like to admit to experiencing any of these

Next invite them to reflect on where or among whom they find these realities in our world today Who and where are the hungry thirsty strangers naked sick or imprisoned What are the assumptions about them Are they imagined to be victims of circumstances Are they blamed for their status How are the systems of society that bring them (or us) into these realities examined

Then invite them to reflect on what each of these might mean for instance to hunger for justice thirst for equity feel like strangers because of some difference to be in ldquonakedrdquo vul-nerability to natural disasters or violence to be sick of the challenges of life and to be imprisoned by prejudice bigotry inhumanity

RespondInvite children young people and all who wish to move to the stations Others will remain seated for proclaiming the word

After proclaiming the word you might invite those who have not already done so to move to and around the stations taking ten minutes or so with a chosen practice

The disciples were full of questions They wanted to know when the world would be filled with Godrsquos love and what that world would be like Jesus wasnrsquot

exactly sure when that would be but his stories helped the disciples imagine wonder and think deeply about how we should live Sometimes the disciples found it hard to under-stand

ldquoWhat does a world filled with Godrsquos love look likerdquo the disciples asked again Jesus asked them to use their imagina-tions and imagine a ruler

ldquoImaginerdquo Jesus said ldquopeople from all the nations in the world gathering around the ruler The ruler has been watch-ing the people very closely and whenever the people had lived in Godrsquos loving ways the ruler smiled and felt the love

too Imagine the ruler saying to the people lsquoYou gave me food when I was hungry You gave me a drink when I was thirsty You welcomed me when I was a stranger and you gave me clothes to wear when I didnrsquot have any You took care of me when I was sick and you visited me when I was in jailrsquo Imagine the people saying lsquoWhen did we do these things that you say we didrsquo Imagine the ruler saying lsquoAll of the times that you did these things for any person I felt the loversquordquo ldquoAhhhrdquo said the disciples ldquowe are beginning to understand We are all part of Godrsquos family when we help one another when we help the poorest and weakest members of Godrsquos families when we help and show compassion to those in greatest need we are caring for Godrdquo

Sunday of the church year and the last chapter in the long story of Christ which begins again next week with the return of Advent Consider what it means to come to the ldquoend of the storyrdquo of Jesus Because our lives are lived in cycles there is no end But is there a quasi-ending to which we need to give attention Jesusrsquo invitation is to live so that the ends are a reward for the means ndash the result is accompaniment with Christ in a realm of heaven that embodies all our efforts to live with justice and peace on Earth How might those who gather to worship learn and serve this week be reminded of this

and above every name that is namedhellipin every agerdquo Be with us as we worship and help us to gain strength for the journey which continues beyond this day ndash the journey of choices and forgiveness to which all people of faith are invited as we follow the Christ Be with us and help us to discover your guidance with every opportunity we encounter ndash the guidance of the shepherd ndashthe guidance of Love Incarnate Amen Prayer of confessionIt is sometimes hard to see beyond the ways of the rulers of our times ndash the ways of power-brokering politicization and competitionIt is sometimes hard to speak truth to ldquoauthoritiesrdquo who abuse their privilege and create obstacles to the peopleIt is sometimes hard to turn away from opportunities to join in the domination and exploitation that bleed into so many aspects of our lives It is sometimes hard to resist allowing people of notoriety

to claim space in our imaginations and our hopefulness for the future We confess we are seduced by ease access accolades and ambition and rarely consider that they may come at the costs of othersrsquo wholeness We confess that it is often just too easy to succumb to the constant temptations of our privilege and our situations and proverbially to walk past the suffering all around usForgive us Loving Shepherd and nudge us onto better paths Forgive us and guide us into right relationship Forgive us and teach us to be like Jesus Forgive us and reclaim us we prayBaaa-men (just a little humour)

Sing or listen to a song such as ldquoAs Long as We FollowNa Nzela Na Lolardquo as people gather together again (Seasons Song-book vol 9 17 on Seasons Music CD vol 9 Printed music and recording also available at Seasons MP3 Downloads wwwseasonsonlineca)

Prayers of the peopleWe know we cannot feed all who hunger ndash but help us God to offer some of what we have to those so much in need We know we cannot offer a drink to all who thirst ndash but help us Holy Shepherd to be grateful for the waters all around us We know we cannot befriend every stranger but show us what it means to be a people of true hospitality and grace We know we cannot cure all illness or remove all pain but help us to share words and expressions that can be felt as balms of your compassion We know Gracious Saviour that we cannot visit all who are imprisoned but help us to recognize and dismantle the prisons of our social and cultural orders ndash to unlock the chains of racism sexism homophobia eco- nomic injustice and nationalistic pride that bind and disempower so many in our world

And we know Creating Wonder that the crises of changing climates cannot be addressed in entirety but help us to live more gently and carefully on this beauti- ful planet

We thank you for loving us into being and we pray to be guided to share that love in return

And for those who know power authority and who rule among us ndash we pray your wisdom would descend upon them your insight grow within them your tenderness flow into them and your love inspire them

And when we forget the eternal nature of your forgiving grace send us messages of encouragement to remind us again that we are your children beloved and blessed And help us to do the same for others we pray in Jesusrsquo name Amen

Prayer of dedication or offering prayerWe have brought ourselves to this worshipWe have brought our resources to this churchWe have offered ourselves in supplication and praiseAnd we have offered our hearts and minds to greater com- passion and understanding Bless them all we pray and transform them into food drink welcome clothing and companionship for all in need Amen

Imagine Based on Matthew 2531ndash46

The disciples were full of questions They wanted to know when the world would be filled with Godrsquos love and what that world would be like Jesus wasnrsquot

exactly sure when that would be but his stories helped the disciples imagine wonder and think deeply about how we should live Sometimes the disciples found it hard to under-stand

ldquoWhat does a world filled with Godrsquos love look likerdquo the disciples asked again Jesus asked them to use their imagina-tions and imagine a ruler

ldquoImaginerdquo Jesus said ldquopeople from all the nations in the world gathering around the ruler The ruler has been watch-ing the people very closely and whenever the people had lived in Godrsquos loving ways the ruler smiled and felt the love

too Imagine the ruler saying to the people lsquoYou gave me food when I was hungry You gave me a drink when I was thirsty You welcomed me when I was a stranger and you gave me clothes to wear when I didnrsquot have any You took care of me when I was sick and you visited me when I was in jailrsquo Imagine the people saying lsquoWhen did we do these things that you say we didrsquo Imagine the ruler saying lsquoAll of the times that you did these things for any person I felt the loversquordquo ldquoAhhhrdquo said the disciples ldquowe are beginning to understand We are all part of Godrsquos family when we help one another when we help the poorest and weakest members of Godrsquos families when we help and show compassion to those in greatest need we are caring for Godrdquo

The disciples were full of questions They wanted to know when the world would be filled with Godrsquos love and what that world would be like Jesus wasnrsquot

exactly sure when that would be but his stories helped the disciples imagine wonder and think deeply about how we should live Sometimes the disciples found it hard to under-stand

ldquoWhat does a world filled with Godrsquos love look likerdquo the disciples asked again Jesus asked them to use their imagina-tions and imagine a ruler

ldquoImaginerdquo Jesus said ldquopeople from all the nations in the world gathering around the ruler The ruler has been watch-ing the people very closely and whenever the people had lived in Godrsquos loving ways the ruler smiled and felt the love

too Imagine the ruler saying to the people lsquoYou gave me food when I was hungry You gave me a drink when I was thirsty You welcomed me when I was a stranger and you gave me clothes to wear when I didnrsquot have any You took care of me when I was sick and you visited me when I was in jailrsquo Imagine the people saying lsquoWhen did we do these things that you say we didrsquo Imagine the ruler saying lsquoAll of the times that you did these things for any person I felt the loversquordquo ldquoAhhhrdquo said the disciples ldquowe are beginning to understand We are all part of Godrsquos family when we help one another when we help the poorest and weakest members of Godrsquos families when we help and show compassion to those in greatest need we are caring for Godrdquo

ldquoA parable ishelliprdquo merits caution Parables particularly those of Jesus defy a single ldquoevery size fits allrdquo definition Some are brief some are quite lengthy A very few take the form of allegory but most do not The parables of Jesus typically involve common elements from everyday life in first-century Palestine The world of farmers and merchants the interchange of family and business relationships provide the ldquostuffrdquo of these stories that would have been readily familiar to its original hearers The genius in the parables comes in their transparency That is Jesus frames these stories in such a way that their details or narratives allow us to ldquosee throughrdquo them to catch glimpses of deeper matters In the parables of Jesus those deeper matters focus on Godrsquos coming realm ldquoKingdom of Godrdquo is the usual expression for that realm though Matthew often employs ldquokingdom of heavenrdquo The two phrases carry the same meaning

Bible Story bull November 22 2020

A recording of this story is available in MP3 format in the Audio Stories folder

Imagine Based on Matthew 2531ndash46

Jesus smiled and nodded

DirectionsFor the leader of a leader-led groupLong long ago a prophet called Ezekiel reminded the people that Godrsquos way is for us to care for one another It is not right to bully others they might see as weaker or not popular The prophet told a story about sheep and a shepherd saying that God is like a shepherd that cares and protects1 Make a sheep for the puppet play A leader will give the cues while the group

mimes the drama 2 Have someone volunteer to be the shepherd The others will be sheep Listen care-

fully for directions in the story 3 Narrator reads the bolded lines dramatically and the italicized lines as stage direc-

tionsAll the sheep are quietly grazing Then they begin moving away from one another some up the mountain and some to the edge of the tableThe shepherd seeing that the sheep were no longer together began to search ldquoHere sheepie sheepie sheepie Where are yourdquo I will rescue them from all the places they hide or get lost O my Dark clouds are coming and soon it will be night I will bring them back home I will lead them to the finest green pastures I can find They can roam safely then If they are injured I will clean and ban-dage their wounds I will pay special attention to the weak sheep and make sure the bigger sheep donrsquot take advantage of them Yes I will do this The shepherd gathered the sheep and brought them back to pastureSheep move back to the pastureldquoLie down sheep Restrdquo said the shepherdSheep lay down Soft snoring can be heard (pause) The sheep wake upOh dear these sheep are not safe stronger sheep are bullying the smaller weaker onesThe smaller weaker sheep fall about Okay you rowdy rams and sassy ewes thatrsquos enough Irsquom going to make things right Therersquos going to be consequences You have no business treating your weak-er brothers and sisters this way ndash butting your heads into their sides just because you can You must change your ways (Pause and use a gentle voice to the smaller sheep)Have no fear little flock I will protect youSheep circle around the shepherd When the drama is complete ask
