Vocational rehabilitation has been the key focus ofour activities since 1991. As a recognised rehabili-tation facility according to § 35 SGB IX, we havethe necessary infrastructure as well as the relevantspecial services. We have always been guided bythe aim of providing the best possible support fordisadvantaged people on the labour market, to pro-mote their own strengths in order to gain independ-ence from the social security systems as much aspossible.

The SALO approach:Integration instead of segregation

The integration services we provide are individ-ual concepts, designed in accordance with theresources of each participant. A consistent orien-tation to feasible business solutions and integrationin the primary labour market is the core elementof the SALO approach, which enables us to pro-vide our services cost-efficiently and in a solution-oriented way for both the person receiving therehabilitation as well as the rehabilitation agencies. Our activities are focused on successfully meetingthe different demands, vocational requirementsand expectations of the companies.

Our concepts are designed to be flexible, thusallowing us to create an individual and customisedplan for each rehabilitation programme. Many ofour measures include various kinds of occupation-al training at one of our more than 60 facilities inGermany. Here we can assess soft skills, such as

social behaviour, communication skills, attentive-ness and the ability to work under pressure for areasonable period of time. And, if necessary, weprovide training to improve these skills. Integratingour rehabilitants into the regular labour market atan early stage is a key consideration for all our mea-sures which has proven successful in practice. Thisapproach is also supported by our high rate of inte-gration. Some of our measures are designed forpeople with reduced mobility, taking place direct-ly in their home town.

Our employees go to the participant’s home andcooperate with the local companies. Our nation-wide network of branches with their strong pres-ence in regional and local structures and networksallows us to implement the adequate qualifica-tion module and to find employment close to theparticipant’s home. As a complementary measu-re, we also cooperate with external specialisedtraining facilities in order to achieve the bestresults. We are specialists for ‘challenging casesand situations’.

Our staff is committed, motivated and all mem-bers are highly qualified in their fields. Rehabilita-tion agencies and rehabilitants alike can be confi-dent that due to our empathy and professiona-lism and our excellent contacts with companies,we will find an individual way (back) into the regu-lar labour market for each participant. Our reha-bilitants can enter our programme without longwaiting periods.

Since 2003 we have been executing integrationmeasures, specially developed for people withbrain damage, i.e. neurological impairments, withour programme ABN@SALO (ambulatory voca-tional neuro-rehabilitation). Rehabilitants withneurological impairments often find it difficult tocope with new situations. Due to their reducedcognitive capabilities, problem-solving abilitiescan only be developed to a limited extent.

Starting a new job in an unfamiliar surroundingoften presents a challenge that is impossible tomanage on their own. Existing employment con-tracts, workplaces and working conditions oftenno longer correspond with the rehabilitant’s abili-ties. Extensive diagnostics and taking stock of therehabilitant’s professional potential enableSALO+PARTNER to provide an individual tailor-made rehabilitation schedule for each rehabili-tant, taking into account the particular needs ofthe participant. We train their vocational, socialand cognitive skills. The focus of our work lies inthe development and training of compensationstrategies for the existing performance impair-ments and in the strengthening of the ability tocope with everyday situations and personal com-petencies. We train social and communicationskills and provide support when coping with theirimpairment. Furthermore, we equip the rehabili-tant with job-related knowledge.

Work trials and vocational training in the compa-nies at an early stage are essential elements in thisprocess. During the programme we carefully andgradually increase the challenges and require-ments to develop and stabilise their performancecapabilities in a sustainable manner. Our staffattends to the rehabilitant when working in thecompanies and gives advice to colleagues andemployers to ensure successful integration. If train-ing or retraining is necessary, we also attend tothe rehabilitant during this period and provide tar-geted support. In this period, we are in close con-tact with trainers and vocational school teachers.Throughout the entire process, the rehabilitantwill be coached by one person, the so-calledrehab coach. Wherever possible, we involve rela-tives, doctors, therapists, employers and col-leagues in the rehabilitation process.

The distinctive feature: our outpatient integration approach!

Being close to familiar surroundings is extremelyimportant to people with brain damage. We cometo the rehabilitants and attend to them directly intheir home town. At the same time, we enable theparticipant, who would otherwise not be able toreach our facilities due to reduced mobility or badaccess to the public transport network, to attendthe programme on a full-time basis.

Exceptional situations require exceptional solutions

Since 1995 we have been integrating people withpsychological impairments into the regular Germanlabour market successfully, since 2011 recognised asa comparable rehabilitation facility in accordancewith § 35 SGB IX. With our ‘NeueWege@SALO’programme (NewWays@SALO) we have becomea nationwide recognised authority in the field ofpsychological rehabilitation as an integral part ofthe networks. Mental impairments affect the reha-bilitant’s experience and behaviour, and oftendevelop unpredictably with individually differentsymptoms. Psychological impairments affect theway they feel, act and experience their environ-ment, which outsiders often find difficult to under-stand.

Having overcome the initial phase of disease, therehabilitants often suffer from cognitive impair-ments, e.g. some have to cope with a lack of con-centration or a lack of energy and drive; othershave difficulties coping with conflicts and socialsituations and some fear not being able to meet thedemands particularly of working life. People withpsychological impairments have conflicts at theirworkplace or experience that their working rela-tionships fail. It is often no longer possible to per-form the same activities as before, as this wouldbe too demanding for the rehabilitant. This job-related uncertainty is a great burden to the reha-bilitant, who wishes to find a job matching theirneeds and abilities. At the same time, they fearnot being able to cope with the conditions of work-ing life and meeting the requirements of a newjob. In the initial phase of our ‘NeueWege@SALO’programme, the rehabilitants with psychological

impairments are gradually and carefully preparedto re-enter working life. Every rehabilitant has apersonal rehab coach who will attend to and sup-port the participant in both professional and per-sonal matters, always taking into consideration‘help for self-help’! Small learning groups enablethe participant to gain or brush up their profes-sional knowledge and to regain confidence intheir own learning and working skills. Furthermeasures, such as social competence training anddeveloping strategies to cope with stress, preparethe rehabilitant for working life. The central con-trolling instrument is our continuously maintainedintegration and coaching schedule. One-on-oneand group talks enable the rehab coach to assessthe rehabilitant’s vocational skills, and to openup new resource-oriented ways back into workinglife. We are aware of the fact that successful inte-gration very much depends on a carefully chosenworkplace in the regular labour market, to makesure the rehabilitant is able to meet the require-ments of the new job.

Having succeeded in stabilising the participantmentally and physically and completing the pro-fessional orientation process, the main emphasisis put on internships in the companies in the regu-lar labour market. Our high rate of integration andour many years of experience show that the re-gained daily routine, the feeling of success and thesocial contacts at work all lead to the fact that ourrehabilitants see themselves as employees andcolleagues and develop a positive self-image. Thisforms the foundation for sustained mental stabili-sation and lasting integration in the regular labourmarket.

Since 2004 SALO+PARTNER has been workingwith adolescents, young adults and adults with thefollowing diagnoses:

• Asperger’s syndrome • high-functioning autism • atypical autism

The aim of our rehabilitation measure AuReA(Autismus – Rehabilitation – Arbeit) with its trainingprogrammes is to develop individual integrationprocesses, thus opening up ways into the regularlabour market. Our approaches aim at (re)integrat-ing our rehabilitants into the primary labour mar-ket. The programme is particularly designed forpeople with autism spectrum disorders and inclu-des basic vocational training, a professional orien-tation process and provides individual support, always aiming at placing the rehabilitant into com-pany-based job training or a job close to their hometown. Close cooperation with the social surroun-dings of our customer (family, attending facilities, etc.) is essential so that all of the people involvedshare and support realistic future prospects. The daily routine in the AuReA competence cen-tres of SALO+PARTNER is designed to provide acombination of job-oriented training in the trainingareas and to coach life skills to promote indepen-dence in life in general. We take the same ap-proach with outpatient participants. This appro-ach promotes the greatest possible independence intheir vocational lives and is supported by our experts

in the competence centres. For our younger reha-bilitants, it may be essential to begin the rehabilita-tion process with an inpatient part, in order to gainthe necessary stability for an outpatient vocationalrehabilitation. The many branches of SALO+Part-ner all over Germany ensure that further activitieswithin the vocational integration processes takeplace close to the participant’s home town.

Our trained personnel provides suitable coaching-after-care measures and follow-up support and alsoimplements a networked support system made tomeasure and right at their home town. Our skilledstaff receives professional support from the compe-tence centre experts. Based on the previous know-ledge and the personal requirements of our custom-ers, our training sessions are designed in modules. This training measure is an individual support forvocational integration, offered by the Agentur fürArbeit (federal labour agency) or other rehabilitationagencies. Rehabilitants may join the training modu-les at any time. Experience has shown that peoplewith autism spectrum disorders have very goodchances to (re-)enter the primary labour market.

We cooperate closely with associations such asAutismus e.V. Deutschland, the local autism cen-tres Autismus-Therapie-Zentren (ATZ), scientificfacilities like universities, and therapists and socialworkers of the social facilities specialised in peoplewith autism spectrum disorders.

As an experienced specialist with wide-rangingexpertise and sustainable success in the field ofvocational rehabilitation for people with hearingimpairments, SALO+PARTNER has been gainingnationwide recognition since 1991. We providesupport for the following groups of people:

• deaf people• people who are hard of hearing• post-lingually deafened people• people with a cochlear implant• people with auditory processing and perception disorders

An auditory processing and perception disorderdescribes a reduced perception which does notresult from a reduced ability to hear. Particularlyyoung people with this condition have an in-creased need for help during their vocational pre-paration and training period. SALO+PARTNER canrespond directly to their needs: the rehabilitantsreceive individual coaching during their vocationalrehabilitation period at a facility, equipped with thenecessary technical, human and professional resour-ces. Many of the specific measures for hearing-impaired people at SALO+PARTNER help to com-pensate for their deficit in auditory perception. All measures provided by SALO+PARTNER aredesigned for, adults and young people with hearingimpairments and aim at establishing conditionsequivalent to those of people without hearingimpairments on the regular labour market. Our

highly qualified staff has an excellent command ofGerman sign language and receives regular furtherjob-related training (e.g. courses/workshops/lectures on acoustics, audiometry and pedagogy forthe hearing-impaired). Any necessary assistance, such as sign language interpreters during the cour-ses or technical aids such as induction-loop systemsare available if required. We place great importan-ce on identifying and promoting the rehabilitant’spotential and capabilities.

• professional orientation and prospects• analysis of strengths and weaknesses • communication, behavioural andjob application workshops

• external assessment

We complement our expertise through close collab-oration with facilities such as Deutscher Gehörlosen-bund (German federation of the deaf) as well as localorganisations for the deaf and hard of hearing. Dueto the fact that we are in a position to provide ourservices close to the rehabilitant’s home and due toour operational orientation, we enjoy a unique posi-tion in Germany. The individual concept allows us tocarry out our training and integration measures in anyprofession suitable for hearing-impaired people. Wecover the entire spectrum, ranging from unskilled jobsto the training of craftsmen, office clerks and even ITspecialists. We achieve a high rate of integration atSALO+PARTNER due to our individual and flexiblydesigned approach and our close and trustworthy

cooperation with companies. Our participants areconfronted with the ‘real world of work’ and itschallenges and gain the same work experience astheir colleagues without hearing impairments.Employees of SALO+Partner who are hearing-impaired themselves also contribute to successfulintegration as they serve as role models for ourrehabilitants. Due to our extensive network of

branches, we are in a position to operate across thenation. Young people and adults usually completetheir training close to their home and can stay inour boarding houses during the theoretical part oftheir programme. The increasing – even interna-tional – interest in our work with hearing-impaired people encourages us to further pursuethe path we have taken.

Accidents and diseases sometimes lead to seriousand lasting physical impairments. Using and hand-ling prostheses, wheelchairs and other aids andequipment may need to be practised. Besides thefact that people with physical impairments haveto face significant changes in their private life andlife planning, they are confronted with thequestion of how to proceed with their career. Formany rehabilitants, their original profession nolonger matches their abilities; others may only beable to carry out their work to a limited extent andneed to learn to use their new aids and equipmentat their workplace. The MeineReha@SALO pro-gramme supports people in this situation holis-tically and with individual solutions.

The aim of MeineReha@SALO is not only thedevelopment of new vocational prospects andintegration into the labour market. We also wantto encourage and support our rehabilitants toaccept their impairments and to cope with themconfidently. We want our rehabilitants to regaintheir trust in their capabilities and to live as inde-pendently as possible. Together with the rehabili-

tant, we carry out an assessment of the currentsituation and determine their vocational re-sources. We hereby do not only focus on existing skills andprofessional experiences, but on all competen-cies, abilities and interests of the participant. Theexact implementation of MeineReha@SALOdepends on the requirements of each individualcase. Having completed the assessment of the cur-rent situation, some rehabilitants may need to gainjob-related knowledge, whereas others, afterreceiving intensive job-application coaching, maystart approaching companies about apprentice-ships right away. During the process of develop-ing prospects that meet the needs of the im-paired person, we often experience that unusualsolutions arise. We also provide support to thoserehabilitants with existing employment contracts. As in all our measures, we place emphasis onpractical training directly at the workplace. Thus,we can identify job-related, communication andmethodical problems at an early stage and thenwork on improving them in the participant’s pro-fessional environment.

Creativity is our strength when a physical impairmentrequires professional reorientation

ADHD is an attention deficit hyperactivity dis-order, which can affect both adolescents andadults. People with ADHD require clear structuresand conditions in order to cope with the require-ments of their working life.

SALO+PARTNER offers people with ADHD, whodo not have a diagnosed learning disability, a spe-cifically developed and made-to-measure pro-gramme for them: the successful ADHS@SALO.

Our rehab team of experienced psychologists, social pedagogues, occupational therapists andtraining staff is supported by medical experts. Thus, we are in the position to respond and dealwith disorders that are related to ADHD (comor-bidities) such as anxiety, depression, disorders insocial behaviour, tic disorders as well as selectiveachievement deficits and learning disabilities. Ourcoaching and training units are particularly tailoredto the needs and requirements of people withADHD. Our small-sized groups, the individual coa-ching and our specific training units in our trainingworkshops provide an appropriate structure forsuccessful and individual progress. Due to the fact

that we focus on operational solutions at an earlystage, we create a ‘real working-life situation’ rightfrom the start, and we are in a position to deve-lop strategies that can also be sustained outsideour ‘protective’ facility. We place our focus onthe regular labour market, and a company-basedtraining for young people. Our rehab team is the-refore closely linked with the local network ofemployers to be able to provide any necessarytraining and coaching measures for the potentialjob.

We play an active role in the networks of schoolsand authorities, hospitals, physicians and therapistsand other service providers that offer assistance andcounselling. Together with the rehabilitant, theirrelatives and the rehabilitation agency, we createa stable framework for the future. The entire re-habilitation process consists of a preparatory unit(coaching and training) followed by an intensivephase at work, attended by a rehab coach, to inte-grate the rehabilitant into working life.ADHS@SALO is split into two modules: first thetraining and coaching activities followed by anintensive search for a job or training opportunity.

Since 1991 we have made it our task to integratepeople who would usually not be able to enter thegeneral labour market due to their impairment. This also includes people with trisomy-21. Tri-somy-21 is a chromosomal disorder. People withthis condition usually show typical physical cha-racteristics and their cognitive abilities are withthis condition to a varying extent. Some peoplewith trisomy-21 gain the regular school-leavingcertificate, most of them are able to read andwrite, many develop knowledge and skills usefulin many jobs. Together with our rehabilitants wework out an individual path into the labour mar-ket and involve parents and therapists in the pro-cess. Having completed an assessment of existing skills, aptitudes and competencies through talks andobservation, we develop a coaching plan for jointexercises and training, which supports and pro-motes not only the vocational training but alsocognitive and social skills and the development ofthe rehabilitant’s personal and everyday compe-tencies.

The process of assessing professional competen-cies takes place during internships at an earlystage. These internships (organised by us) providea possibility to try out new activities that meet the

participant’s needs and skills. We always take intoaccount the rehabilitant’s individual psycho-phys-ical ability to work under pressure and make surethe internship matches the rehabilitant’s perfor-mance profile. Having developed a suitable voca-tional profile, we start with the training period atthe company. The participant is now intensivelyintroduced into their responsibilities and closelyattended to by their rehab coach. For a success-ful internship at the company, it is of great import-ance to prepare the employees and new col-leagues to work together with our rehabilitantsand to clear up misunderstandings and prejudices. The new responsibilities are clearly determinedprior to the training period, and the rehab coachattends to the rehabilitant during the period ofvocational adjustment. Throughout the entire pro-cess, we provide support and assistance to therehabilitant not only to cope with their profession-al activities but also to help with integrating intotheir social environment. We help establish con-tacts and develop our participant’s potential andskills. According to our philosophy, sustainablevocational integration is more than just job place-ment, but also the promotion of individual re-sources that enable our rehabilitants to cope withtheir professional challenges in the long run.

Exploiting full potential through targeted individual support

Having received the regular school-leaving certifi-cate, the path to a professional future frequentlyleads a person with physical or mental impairmentsdirectly to a sheltered workshop. This is the rightchoice for many people with an impairment. How-ever, some disabled people may find themselvesunder-challenged in a sheltered workshop andwould, with the appropriate assistance, like achance on the regular labour market.

Supported employment – unterstützte BeschäftigungThe MeineChance@SALO project is an adaption ofthe very successful ‘supported employment’ pro-

gramme in Great Britain, which enabled severalthousands of disabled people from sheltered facil-ities to enter the main labour market all over GreatBritain.

MeineChance@SALO is based upon three pillars:

• assessing and working out employability• medium-term coaching support at work• long-term financial support of regular work

We want to provide people with impairments anopportunity to lead self-determined and dignifiedworking lives with their own income and at the
