INTERNATIONAL SUMMER COURSE 2014"Elemental Music and Dance Pedagogy - Orff-Schulwerk"

Directed by Andrea Ostertag and Doris ValtinerAssistants: Sonja Eder, Judith Fellner

Duration: 40 hours

Morning Sessions – 09:00 – 10:30 / 11:00 – 12:30

Why Music Education Needs ImaginationOrff Schulwerk principles are introduced through songs, games and movement activities. The instrumental work includes improvisation and song accompaniments. The workshop is designed to stimulate imagination and creative thinking, to develop new skills and to expand repertoire and resources.(Werner Beidinger, Potsdam)

Playing With ObjectsThese sessions will explore ways to use everyday objects to engage the creative musical imagination of children. Cardboard, paper, and string will lead us into play with rhythm, pitch, timbre, dynamic, tempo and form.(James Harding, San Francisco)

Dance Journeys The body is the dancer´s instrument. Through sensory exercises and improvisational explorations – alone or in relationship with others – we will experience dance in space, time and energy, giving our dancing ideas form. The emphasis is placed on the enjoyment of dancing and on our own personal expression and development. (Andrea Ostertag, Salzburg)

The Whole VoiceVoice as sound: sound textures, imagery and contemporary musicVoice as rhythm: rhythm patterns, rhymes and vocal percussionVoice as melody/ harmony: tonal patterns, singing games and songsVoice (and movement) as a tool for developing musical thinkingModels of an Orff approach integrating E.Gordon´s Music Learning Theory(Andrea Sangiorgio,Rome)

Evening Sessions – 19:30 – 20:30

Afternoon Sessions – 14:30 – 16:00 / 16:30 – 18:00

I Percussion EnsembleParticipants will be introduced to various percussion instru-ments and models of combining them. Specifically selected warm up games complete diverse activities with the instruments. (Mari Honda, Salzburg)

II Howdoyoudo – badooba? This course focuses on song accompaniment with Orff and self made instruments – from quite easy to quite groovy. Through playing with speech and rhythm we discover accompany patterns in Latin, Swing or PipPop style. Different possibilities of creating songs are introduced.(Frajo Köhle, Telfs/ A)

III Traditional Dance Forms as a Starting PointDances from different periods and countries will lead us to develop multiple activities related to music, dance and fine arts through improvisation and composition. Special attention will be given to the didactic process and the adaption to different target groups.(Verena Maschat, Madrid)

IV Vocal and Instrumental: Making and Creating MusicWorld music examples form the bases for accessible vocal and instrumental arrangements in this workshop. The models provided offer room for creative engagement with voice, instruments and movement. Playful starting points with enticing pedagogical ideas open creative ways applicable in practice with opportunities for further development.(Christoph Maubach, Hamilton/ NZ)

V Come Into Play – Patterns For Developing Ensemble CompositionsTo invent and to create, to practice and to play, to improvise and to interpret music together with others, is deemed to be the truest form of making music and considered to be the quintessence of learning music.(Isabel Rösner, München)

VI From Movement Games to Creative DanceThese sessions will provide formal principles on utilizing music and dance creatively with children. Starting from practical examples movement games will be developed and furthermore used to create dance. Creative skills and intuition will be emphasised as important tools to work with movement and dance in early childhood education. (Doris Valtiner, Salzburg)
