Title: The Pathway Metaphor: Two or Three Policy Issues HigherEd/Adult Ed
Description: This presentation reports on a media analysis of the lexical items pathway/s and pathway program/s as used generally and in specific areas of interest in Adult and Higher Education. Pathway, witness conven-tion themes from TESOL 2009 to NAFSA 2014, frequently has a positive connotation. Yet in reference to corporate-university partnerships, programs intended to help students meet common core standards, and pathways to citizenship; it may suggest cor-porate raiding, filling classrooms with un-qualified students, and mollycoddling illegal aliens. The word itself becomes a flashpoint. Russell will engage participants in a calm and civil discussion of several kinds of path-way programs.
Bio: Russell Clark is director of Study Group International Study Center in Chicago. He holds a B.A. from Boston University, an M.A. from the University of Minnesota, and was president of ITBE in 2007-08.

Title: Providing Meaningful Professional Development: Moving Beyond the Man-date ALL Levels
Description: Professional development is often offered to teachers minimally or not at all—and usually in response to a requirement. As a result, professional develop-ment is generally infrequent, impersonal, and lacking an impact. This scenario leaves much to be desired since teachers are in critical need of new skills, knowledge, and support. In this workshop, administrators and teachers will select a type of profes-sional development that they wish to implement, whether on a programmatic or indi-vidual level, and problem-solve to identify how to make this activity truly meaningful.
Bio: Dana Horstein works at Northeastern Illinois University as a teacher trainer and as the developer for the new TESOL Graduate Certificate Program. She has worked in TESOL for 11 years.
