Introducing Brisbane

Wonderful climate…..Safe….Relaxed These are the qualities that everyone remembers about Brisbane, the capital city of Queensland. We have a sub-tropical climate, so it’s warm and sunny all year. Outdoor Activities Our wonderful climate makes you want to spend time outdoors, in the parks by the Brisbane River or on the beach. The beautiful beaches of the Gold or Sunshine Coast are only an hour away to the south and the north. The rainforest with its unusual plants is to the west. Australians love sports, and Brisbane offers you the opportunity to play or watch a range of sports, from Aussie Rules football to swimming to horse racing. Indoor Activities For those who prefer to remain indoors, Brisbane offers discos, bars, pubs and night clubs, but you must be over 18 years. There are many good department stores and boutiques in Brisbane, open seven days a week.

Botanic Gardens These beautiful sub-tropical gardens are a short walk from LSI Brisbane. You can sit in the shade of the trees, or you can hire a bike and ride on Brisbane’s network of bike paths to see a different Brisbane.

Food Brisbane is noted for the freshness and variety of the food available, and seafood is a special favourite with most people.

South Bank Parklands This park is just across the Brisbane River from the Central Business District. It has a beach, barbeques, shops, a board walk and bike path along the river, restaurants, coffee shops, bars and plenty places to sit on the grass and enjoy the sunshine and blue skies.

LSI Brisbane LSI Brisbane is located in a heritage building in the city centre, close to shops, restaurants and public transport. It is only a short walk to Queen Street Mall and the heart of Queensland's retail district in one direction and the Brisbane River in the other direction. The school is fully air-conditioned, and there are kitchen facilities on both floors, as well as a computer room with free internet access and a library for quiet study.

We were established in 1996, and since then we’ve been offering high quality courses to meet our students’ needs. We also offer homestay and student residence accommodation, airport transfers and a leisure program that allows you to practise your English while you enjoy the attractions of sunny Brisbane.

• Our premises are fully air-conditioned and carpeted. • The classrooms are bright with natural light from the

large windows, making students feel comfortable and relaxed.

• We have 12 classrooms and a large well-resourced library.

• Our computer room has 14 computers for student use. • Internet access is free for students and wireless is

available throughout the school. • In the spacious Student Common Room there are

armchairs, coffee tables and vending machines and new magazines each month for you to read.

• We have refrigerators and microwave ovens in the kitchen areas on both levels.

Where is LSI Brisbane? LSI Brisbane is located in the centre of Brisbane on the corner of Edward and Mary Streets, on Levels 1 and 2 of a three level building. From street level, you go up some stairs to the entrance lobby and take the lift.

� International School Year (ISY)

The ISY program is a discounted Intensive 30 or 24 program for long term students, and is ONLY available for 24, 30 and 36 weeks. Students study general English in the mornings and have a choice of electives which vary according to level, in the afternoons.

� Afternoon electives include General English, Business English and Exam preparation ( IELTS, TOEFL iBT & TOEIC)

Students may also include a full-time Cambridge Examination Preparation course in their ISY program. At LSI Brisbane we recommend to all ISY students that they sit for an international exam at the end of their course.

� Executive Courses One-to-One This is ideal for students who have very specific needs. Each course is tailored to suit your needs or your company’s requirements.

Orientation Day

You can enrol any Monday (when Monday is a public holiday, courses start Tuesday) at LSI Brisbane for most courses. On your first morning you we ask you to arrive at school in time to start at 8:30am. You will be given a placement test which has two parts:

• A writing test • An interview

After a break, you will be given information about our school, our staff members and their responsibilities, who to see if you have a question, our facilities, our timetable, and our social activities program. One of our staff members will take you for a walk in the city to show you the banks, currency exchanges, post office, where to buy bus and train tickets and where to get transport timetables. You will join your class for the afternoon lessons (LSI Intensive students) or the next morning (LSI Standard students). All students are given a student card on the first morning.

How do we teach? Students are placed in classes at the level that is appropriate for them. Our courses are designed to develop speaking, writing, listening and reading skills, and close attention is also paid to grammar. All skills are taught communicatively using a task-based approach. We use a wide range of materials and techniques. Our primary aim is to encourage students to talk as fluently as possible within the shortest possible time, so there is an emphasis on pair work and group work in classes. One-to-one tuition is organized according to the needs of the individual student. Our aim is to make the learning process as dynamic and as enjoyable as possible.

Accommodation in Brisbane Homestays Our homestays are carefully selected by our Homestay Coordinator, who visits each family to ensure that LSI’s high standards are maintained. Host families live close to public transport and within an average of 35 minutes of the city centre by public transport.

LSI Brisbane homestay accommodation provides a comfortable single room for the student with study facilities nearby, half board or bed and breakfast, clean bed linen and towels weekly & laundry facilities. Many Australians are relatively casual in their home life and may ask students to join them in the kitchen to prepare a typical dish from their country or to help themselves to breakfast rather than being served. It is important for students to remember that they are living in a private home and they should respect the lifestyle of their hosts. In all cases students will be welcomed as a member of the family and made to feel at home. At LSI Brisbane we recommend homestay accommodation to give students:

Social Program LSI Brisbane offers a social activities program planned by our Social Activities Coordinator. Weekday activities may include:

Weekend Excursions

Arrival and Airport Transfer

Brisbane International Airport

Brisbane International Airport is approximately 16 km from the centre of Brisbane. LSI Airport Transfer - We can arrange this provided we know flight details at least two days before (longer if possible). When the student comes through customs, there will be a uniformed driver from the limousine company waiting, holding a welcome LSI sign. The driver will phone the host family as soon as the student has been met, so that the family knows the student has arrived safely, and the time to expect them. The student will be driven to the host family’s house and the stay in Brisbane, with all its wonderful experiences will be waiting!

This service is available 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. Other Airport Transportation Includes:

Public Transportation In Brisbane you can get to your destination by three main means of transport. They are: Bus - There is a network of bus routes throughout Brisbane, and the buses run to timetables. The fares are zoned, from $21 - $25 / week. Train - These fares are slightly cheaper, but the train system is not as extensive as the bus system. Ferry - Ferries operate on the Brisbane River. The price of a ferry ticket is the same as a bus ticket. There are no concessions available.

Booking Procedure

• Complete the LSI Brisbane enrolment form or use the enrolment form on our web site at www.LSI.edu.

• We will confirm your booking and send you an invoice • If you need a student visa* for a course longer than 12

weeks, we will include a Letter of Offer with your booking confirmation and invoice.

• If you need a student visa for a course longer than 12 weeks, we will issue an Electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (eCoE) to the nearest Australian embassy as soon as the fees have been paid.

• If a student visa is not needed, fees must be paid two weeks before the commencement of the course.

• Please make sure we have your arrival details so that we can arrange your Airport Transfer (if you have booked one) and inform your host family of your arrival time.

* You are able to study for a maximum of 12 weeks if you have a Tourist visa and 17 weeks if you have a Working Holiday visa.
