Police advise that whenever you are asked to use a debit card instead of a credit card for whatever reason, enter the wrong PIN. If it is a counterfeit machine it will pretend to process the payment and produce a

receipt whereas an authentic machine will reject the PIN and request a “try again” message.

Help spread the word, as the police state this type of fraud is becoming increasingly prevalent.

New Year Resolution?

In 2020, or earlier, the Committee would love some new blood –

YOURS! Ideally, people should only stay on the Committee for three years.

If you have any ideas for improvements or changes, or would just like

to get more involved, speak to any committee member at our next meeting.

What would you have to do?

Initially, you would need to turn up on the 4th Wednesday of the month at Prospect House for a Committee meeting. Hilary Morris, our chair, runs these meetings and makes sure

that everyone can be heard. We discuss what has happened in the past month, what events are on in the following month and anything else that is proposed. We would also appreciate your help at the Monthly speaker meeting.

Once you have settled in, you will find a role that interests you (e.g. we would like someone to look after new members) and join us as a Trustee. As a Trustee, you help to run and direct Leyland U3A. We all have a duty to act in good faith, honestly and responsibly.

Membership card – Have you put the name and contact number of someone on the back of

your new card who we can contact in case of emergency? Thought not! Please do it now. If you carry your card to meetings or events, we know who to ring on your behalf if we need to.

Staying in Touch

Our newsletter is circulated every three months. Often we would like to let you know, or you might like

to let us know, about events that you might be interested in at shorter notice e.g. performances by the

Ukulele group, last minute tickets becoming available for Theatre trips or Visits.

To stay in touch you can:

• Write something for the blog – send to Ian Barrow [email protected]

• Subscribe to the blog

• Join the Leyland U3A Facebook group (you can just look at what’s happening if you don’t want emails)

• Follow us on twitter

• Contact Hilary Morris, who will produce a short monthly report “Ramblings from the Chair”

If you need help with any of these things, ask a committee member at the monthly meeting

Coffee and Chat

“Coffee and chat” sessions are still being held at 2:30 p.m. on the first Friday of each month at the Roccoco Café, Chapel Brow, Leyland. Come along, chat, ask questions and enjoy a brew

in this friendly café. And bring a friend who might be interested in joining Leyland U3A. The next two meetings will be Friday 3 January and Friday 7 February.

Do you have any of the following skills?

• Sound Engineer – the Ukeleylanders need someone to help set up, advise on and operate their new sound equipment. Contact Ian Barrow – [email protected]

• Organisers – The (Leyland U3A) Committee would like at least two new members. If you can help with a job that needs doing, e.g. looking after new members, liaising with speakers, arranging socials, putting up posters etc., please contact [email protected] or see Hilary Morris (Chairman) at the monthly meeting.

• Reviewers – We need more people to write reviews of Meetings, trips and events.

• Please see a member of the Committee at any meeting.

• Photographers - We need people to take photos of Meetings, trips and events.

If you would like to help with any of the above, please speak to any committee member at the Monthly Meeting.

Monthly Meetings Reports

Wednesday 9 October: Appley Bridge Meteorite by Russell Parry

There was a good turnout to hear Russell Parry speaking about a meteorite which lit up the night sky over

the Midlands and the North West on 13 October 1914 before landing on a farm in Upholland.

It was originally reported by newspapers as a Zeppelin scare over Wigan.

Samples of this and other iron meteorites, which are older than most of us(!) as they are debris from the birth of the solar system, around 4560 million years ago, were passed around. The original Appley meteorite weighed around 30lb. It was confiscated by Police and taken to Preston, Manchester then London.

It was sold to the British Museum for £242 in 1920 and most of it can now be found at the Natural History museum. In the course of its travels around the UK, 3lb in weight went missing. If you come across any, please contact Mr Parry.

Wednesday 30 October: Lancashire Neet

Our annual Lancashire Neet took place at Fox Lane Cricket club on Wednesday 30 October. Entertainment – songs, poems and jokes were provided by Tacklers Tales, Sid Calderbank and Mark Dowding, ably supported by Hilary Morris in the rendition of the Lion and Albert. The audience’s enthusiastic shouting of

“He shall die” to accompany The Spaniard who blighted my life (Alphonso Spagoni) also rates a mention. It was great to have Michael Holden and his team providing hotpot again.

Sid will be entertaining us again at our January meeting at St Ambrose with his Cracks from a Cobblers seat. Don’t forget to put this in your diary – it’s early as can be – 8 January 2020.

Wednesday 13 November: Reedy’s Natural Jams and Preserves

Lisa Reedy gave up a well-paid job and put her house on the line to set up her own Jams and Preserves business. Her recipes were inspired by a 1920s cookbook. She prides herself on using wholly natural ingredients, producing preserves which are all (except one) vegetarian, vegan and gluten free. She even

makes her own pectin and has recently been producing ingredients for marmalade for a famous London store (H…..!). Recipe ideas – try making satay sauce with fried garlic, water, chili jam and crunchy peanut butter. Lots of samples were available to try.

GROUPS:

Please Note: Before each Leyland U3A newsletter goes out to our members, the Editor emails all

coordinators to ask them to write about what their group has been doing and what they plan for the following 3 months.

The Editor would like to remind coordinators that she relies on them to update her on what is going on and that the newsletter is an excellent advertising medium for their groups.

Please visit our website (an excellent website kept up-to-date by Ian Barrow and very interesting) or you will miss out on loads of photographs and reports which do not appear in this newsletter as we

just do not have enough space for all of them there.

New Groups starting up:-

Exploring Wines and Spirits

At the November meeting, members were able to sign up to join this new group, and it looks like quite a few people are interested in wines and spirits!

The idea is for a group to meet monthly to share knowledge about a chosen wine and taste some examples. Being a member of the group will involve doing a bit of homework (simply drinking a lot does not count!) and making a contribution towards the cost of the wine for tasting. While tasting wine and having some fun, we will also be learning! We will explore growing regions, grape types, production and history. We will learn how to taste wine and spirits so that we can make informed judgements about what we do, and do not, like about certain wine and spirit types.

We will probably also go out to wine tastings and get some expert guidance as and when we feel that it will be useful and fun.

The response has been fantastic! Now, I am working out how to organise things (we have 20 people signed up), and I have emailed folks to ask them to come early to the December meeting (Wednesday 11 December, 10:00 am) to make arrangements for the first meeting in January. If you have any enquiries about this group, then please get in touch with me, Gill Whittaker, either by phone, text or email. 01772 426042, 075485019424 [email protected]

Strummers and Warblers group

"Do you have an instrument that you would like the chance to play? Or would you

prefer just to sing along?

The newly formed Strummers and Warblers group offer all who want the opportunity to play that instrument that has been gathering dust in the corner, the

chance to do so. Dust it off and bring it along. Vocalists and would-be vocalists are very welcome as well. Your level of ability is not important, but your enthusiasm is. Members can provide whatever music takes their fancy so long as it's not too complex

(we're all amateurs). The group meets monthly (for now) at Prospect House, Leyland, on a Tuesday afternoon at 2:00p.m. The exact schedule will be announced soon but

the first exploratory meeting will be on December 10th. The cost will depend on the

number attending but we envisage it to be around £2 for a 2-hour session with tea and biscuits included. So, come along and join us in an informal and relaxed atmosphere to sing and strum. A lovely way to meet, share and socialise.

Jim Porter; [email protected]

Any Quizzers in Leyland U3A? Pam Roberts is looking for people who would be interested in joining a quiz team. The idea would be to attend a quiz night in Leyland on a regular basis. If you are interested, please contact Pam Roberts at [email protected]

Notes: The new Creativity group could be just what you are looking for. We aim to produce vibrant, beautiful

and unique art-related items. We are a small, friendly and fun group for beginners and experienced crafters

alike. We meet fortnightly and will work on a different project each month. Suggestions so far include:

Silk Painting, Upcycling, Papier-mâché, Rock Painting, a trip to Avant

gardens for a demonstration on creating Christmas table decorations.

Please contact Ivy Fielding on [email protected] or talk to Ivy at the

Monthly Leyland U3A meeting, if you would like to join the group. You would

also be welcome to share your craft with us.

Cycle Group

Where: Meet at the Leyland Leisure Centre, Lancastergate, Leyland

When: 1st and 3rd Friday each month starting at 1:00 p.m.

Notes: Each of our routes aims to include a stop for coffee (and maybe also a slice of cake). Our rides are generally shorter at this time of year, around 10-12 miles, so that we are back before it gets dark.

Our most recent trips have been to Astley Park and the Velo café at Twin Lakes in Croston, and over the

past few months we have also taken in Cuerden and Avenham parks, as well as heading out to Longton via Walmer Bridge.

Longer outings in the spring and summer, around 15-20 miles, have seen us visit Tarleton, Cedar Farm café in Mawdsley, and the Owd Barn at Bispham, as well as a route heading up through Brindle for great views out towards Blackpool, before swooping down into Gregson Lane for a coffee.

For a shorter ride on those rare, really warm days, we have followed the Leeds and Liverpool canal, either for a

refreshing beer at the Top Lock pub in Wheelton, or towards Adlington to cool down

at Frederick's ice cream parlour.

Unless road conditions are considered too icy and dangerous on the day, we shall be continuing all through the winter, so our next outings are scheduled for the 6 and 20 December.

New members are always welcome, and we are happy to take suggestions for new routes. If you are interested just email me, Nick Wilcox, at [email protected]

Nick Wilcox, Group Coordinator

Dining Out Group

Barry and I took over organising the Dining Out Group at the start of the year. Our first meal in January was to Papa Luigi’s and was very well supported, so much so we were asked to repeat the visit. As usual, everyone is welcome of course – just come to see us at the Dining Out table at our usual monthly meeting where we have a current list of proposed venues.

We’ve enjoyed a variety of cuisine from local restaurants – Italian, Indian, Chinese, Japanese and, of course, good old British pub food. December saw us closing the year with a visit to Midge Hall for Sunday lunch. On 21st January we repeat our last year’s visit to Papa Luigi’s.

if you have a favourite restaurant and would like to share it with a group who enjoy eating out and a chat then do please come to see our table. Everyone is very welcome.

We’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has contributed and offered help this past year in organising a meal for our group and booking a table etc. We appreciate you all so much and look forward to expanding our knowledge of local pubs and eateries with even more people.

Happy Christmas to you all.

Holiday Club:

We're very pleased to write that our first holiday will, hopefully, be enjoyed by 21 members. We'll be heading to Jersey on 1st May 2020 for 5 days. Staying at the Merton Hotel with a visit to the War Tunnels, a full island tour and Samares Manor included, with an optional excursion to Durrell zoo, we have a full programme planned. A new venture for all of us and a first for us in organising a group holiday. We really do hope we

all enjoy ourselves and look forward to more ‘holls’ if this one is a success. Thanks to everyone for supporting us.

Barry and Chris Price, Holiday Club coordinators ([email protected])

[Christine & Barry Price have done a fantastic job in organising a trip to Jersey for 21 Leyland U3A members, who will depart for Jersey on 1 May. The holiday includes airport transfers, meals and trips out. Places may still be available, but the cost may have increased]

Knitting, Crochet and Craft group

Where: Community Room, Northbrook Gardens, Northbrook Rd, Off Bannister Drive, Leyland PR25 2XS

When: Every Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

Notes: Knitting, Crochet and Handmade Crafts

As Christmas approaches, bringing with it winters icy blasts, we’re all turning to knitting warm and comforting

things for ourselves and for our chosen charities.

We’re finishing up the year knitting hats to be donated to Chorley food banks so that those in our local community who need a little help to get some woolly warmth this winter get them. Tiny garments for

premature babies and bonding squares for mummies who have to leave their little ones in hospital when they go home are a constant for us too. Many of the group are busy making some fabulous twiddle muffs which are destined for local organisations supporting dementia patients.

With the New Year come new projects to support. In January we are knitting adults’ hats, scarves, gloves/mitts for the homeless, and Easter chicks will be making an early appearance ready for Rainbow House to sell them as part of their Easter fundraising activity.

Twiddle muffs will continue to be a project into the new year, as will dolls clothes which are also to be supplied to dementia organisations, for patients who find comfort from caring for baby dolls.

As ever, contributions from the wider U3A community are most welcome, and we can supply patterns and yarn packs if anyone would like to join in. Please contact Fiona Gregson, Gail Potts or Kim Whittle if you would like materials.

Kim Whittle, Knitting, Crochet and Craft Group Coordinator

Notes: Our discussion in November covered Aristotle's theory of Virtue, or the Good Life as the golden mean between deficiency and excess. So, the State should allow its people not just to live but to live well. It is set out in his Nichomachaen Ethics, if you would like to read further.

As usual, newcomers are welcome, and I look forward to seeing old hands again.

Alastair Thomas, Philosophy Group Coordinator.

Pub Lunch Group:

Thank you to everyone who has supported the pub lunch whilst I have not been around and, of course, special thanks to Bill for making sure it happened. Hopefully I will be at more next year.

I have tried to find a couple of new pubs but the one I did find has since shut down. Sad! Some of the others seem to have given up and now offer mostly the same menu as everywhere else. Still the group is more about maintaining friendship than the food.

As usual we will meet on the 4th Tuesday of the month. Turn up about 12:30, order food and drink and join everyone for a chat. I have sorted out the venues but will just list the first three months as no one will remember them!

• 28 January 2020 at the Eagle and Child, Leyland

• 25 February 2020 at The Beaumont near the big Asda

• 24 March 2020 at Wetherspoon's, Leyland

I hope to see some old and new faces next year and hope to be at most of the venues.

Happy new year to you all.

Janice McLean, Coordinator, Pub Lunch Group

P.U.D Club

The PUD Club Is the diet club for ‘Previously Unsuccessful Dieters’.

Where: At Pam’s house.

When: 9:45a.m. every Tuesday.

The PUD club continues to meet every Tuesday morning to weigh ourselves, discuss diets and new ideas, have a brew and sometimes sample new products. We have a Christmas challenge, with the winner(s) getting money to spend on smaller clothes!

This is a ‘no pressure, virtually no cost diet group’. We go out for a trip, which includes a PUD or a lunch every few months. Some of us are currently trying out the 5:2 diet, with good success. Ask Pam ([email protected]) Please contact Pam if you want to join us. Your weight and weekly results are always totally private.

In October, a member’s home became Ginnies for the night; an innocuous name for a gin tasting joint. We

sampled 10 gins, ate delicious home-made snacks and generally had a brilliant evening. All the gins were rated for appearance, aroma and taste. Sloe gin and Raspberry & Hibiscus gin were the joint winners, both for flavour and overall. Thanks to Marian Crossley, who did so much work to make the evening a success. She could organise tastings professionally!

Pam Carroll, PUD group coordinator

Reading Group:

Where: Roccoco Coffee Shop, 41-45 Chapel Brow, Leyland

When: 1st Thursday of each month from 2:00 – 3:00p.m.

Notes: Phone 01772 468110 for further information or contact Val through the website.

We discuss books chosen from a list we obtain from the library at the beginning of

each year, and into which we all have some input. Last month's book was Wyrd Sisters by Terry Pratchett (mixed reviews) and this month we are reading Red Joan by J. Rooney which is based on a true story.

Our first two books in the New Year will be Elmet by F. Mozley and The Marriage Bureau for Rich People by Farahad Zama. We are a small but friendly group and new members are always made welcome.

Ann and Alan had explored the route and had decided that, as long as the weather was OK, it would be a good walk, with some fine views of North Lancashire and the coast one way, and the Bowland Fells to the other. Nine dedicated walkers duly set off on a relatively fine November morning although it was quite windy. It was Steve’s baptism of fire on our walks, and he had chosen one of our less gentle walks. After a trudge

to the top where the wind really blew, we had a gentle stroll back along the Grizedale valley and back to the very pleasant Applestore cafe. On the way we wondered how Nicky Nook had got its name – not from our Nick! We were intrigued by a couple of signs referring to ‘game birds’ – which attracted some ribald

comments, and we speculated about various buildings and towers we passed on the way. All in all, a pleasant walk.

Our next walk coming up to Christmas will be by Rivington reservoir and back to the café by the bowling

green.

And to finish on a high note –

How amazing are we??

Ian Pemberton and his daughter got to the final of Pointless- winning the coveted Pointless trophy on their first attempt.

The Ukulele group entered the “Soup Dragons Den” in November. A successful

pitch resulted in them being awarded £800 to purchase new equipment from Progress Housing.

Christine and Barry Price have organised a trip to Jersey for 21 members on 1 May.

The research, planning and activities involved would put most travel agents to shame.

Tell us if your group or someone in it has done something amazing

OK – so, many of us can’t jump this high –

but we can at least applaud our U3A members’ successes!

I wish everyone a very Happy Christmas and a prosperous and healthy New Year

Janet
