IT WAS GREATCAN you imagine a waiter in a smart restaurant

serving out food straight on to the tablecloth ?I witnessed just that in a smart eating house enroute for Scotland. But you couldn't blame theyoung waiter, for he was serving a certain younglady whom he admitted was the "singing greatest"-Brenda Lee !

He was looking at her so intently, he wasn't concen-trating on the plates-and missed them !

This was just one of the hilarious incidents during BrendaLee's recent two-week tour of Britain, which I presented.Believe me, we had more laughs in that fortnight than onewould imagine possible, for Brenda is as great a comedienneoff-stage as she is a singer on-stage !

The restaurant incident was but one that kept her manager,Dub Albritten ; her mother, Mrs. Grace Rainwater andmyself literally rolling with laughter.

Even after the tablecloth had been replaced and the mealfinally served we could only eat between outbursts of mirththat never ceased to flow from America's 17 -year -old MissDynamite

With the hectic itinerary which was lined up for her,Brenda often needed her sense of humour to cope withtedious problems.

At one Northern hotel, she arrived in her room to find nocentral heating. There was a tiny gas fire with a large snag-it needed a sixpence in the meter.

So well after midnight Brendawent downstairs with a pound noteand return with 80 sixpences !" Thought I might need a fewspares," she quipped later. But herproblems weren't over for the meterwas broken and refused to acceptany of the coins !

Finally she changed rooms butnot before she had asked me if shecould go back to the theatre and

FUN

spend the night in " that doggonecosy dressing room" she'd had.

At another hotel she met with themost hilarious experience, whichshe told us about later.

As Brenda got into bed her feettouched " a warm crinkly objectthat moved." Convinced that it wasalive, she took a coat hanger andbeat the thing through the bedding.

TOURING WITH BRENDA LEEreveals impresario DON ARDEN

in this NMExclusive articlestaff that she had been fighting a hotwater bottle-something Brenda hadnever seen before in her life!

There were unfortunate incidentson the tour, too. In Glasgow myStudebaker car was broken intoand Brenda lost a radio and othersmaller items, and at Newcastleshe lost her address book. Thismust have been a valuable find, forit contains personal telephonenumbers of Elvis Presley, the EverlyBrothers, Fabian and many otherAmerican stars.

Apart from personally likingBrenda, I developed a greatadmiration for her professionallyduring the trip. She knew her musicfrom A to Z and achieved some finearrangements with Sounds Incor-porated for her act.

1 know I speak for Sounds whenI say that she was the easiestpossible person to work with,

although hard work it was, forBrenda passed nothing until she wassatisfied that it was of the very best !

At rehearsals she busily changedarrangements to get the best back-ing effect and often demonstratingto the musicians just how shewanted particular parts played

Enjoyed itI believe she enjoyed this tour

tremendously. Everywhere she wentBrenda was well received andwell liked. She bought quite a fewclothes and snapped up nine pairsof shoes in one visit to a Londonshop !

One of her most pleasurableafternoons in Britain was at theNME Poll Winners' Concert. Thisgave her a wonderful opportunityto view top British artists in one

hour - something she could neverhave done otherwise.

And she fulfilled something thatshe told me was high on her list of" must -do's " when she flew in-ameeting with Helen Shapiro. Theyare both keen admirers ofeach other's work and talkedenthusiastically together for sometime at the show.

The tour certainly establishedBrenda, the recording star, as a greatartist to the British public. thepopularity with which she wasgreeted was truly heart-warming and"the launching of her British fanclub at the end of the visit was afitting show of appreciation for herwork as inquiries about the clubliterally flooded in.

Now I am busy negotiating datesfor Brenda's return and althoughthe weather will probably havegrown cold by the time this ispossible owing to her U.S. commit-ments, at least I shall make surethat there are electric blankets inall the hotels on the next tour . . .

Tomorrow (Saturday) we are offto Chicago for two weeks at theBourbon Street Club. So I am gladof this opportunity to welcome Boband his band to Britain.

When I was playing second trum-pet in Charlie Galbraith's band in1949, I was constantly listening torecords of Lu Watton's Yerba Buenaband, in which Bob was playingsecond cornet.

They were exponentS of what cameto be known as the San Franciscostyle-it was actually a Dixielandrevival being played by younger menwith new ideas.

It's true to say that Bob has beena big influence on my own- musicalcareer despite the fact that we'venever met.

A GREAT WEEK FOR SINGLES! KEITHe;ORDb`ICE

* ELVIS * BILLY * CLIFF011

IT'S a cracking good week for new releaseswith a stack of top names and a pile of

potential hits. Heading the list is Elvis him-self with his latest RCA waxing, Good LuckCharm."

A relaxed. easy and casualnumber that relies on the Presleypersci.-nlity to sell it. And, withthat magnetic appeal undimin-ished, I guess it's another chart -topper.

" Anything That's Part Of You "is slow and sad and has a pianohacking that sounds just like FloydCramer, and probably is.

PAT BOONE" Quando Quando Quando " is

the title of Pat Boone's new song.sung partly in Italian. Light andsparkling with Pat singing in avoice of finest velvet.

" Waling And Eager " comes fromthe film " State Fair." It's a leisurelyballad, and Pat croons excellently. On the London label.

EDEN KANEOne of the good oldies is revived

by Eden Kane on Decca, namely " IDon't Know Why."

With a very imaginative arrange-ment that makes one sit up rightfrom the start and with a greatcrashing heat this is turned into a

top hit of 1962.Eden himself copes better than

-most with some spoken lines andihete are moments when his singing

sounds astoundingly like Louis Prima!Congratulations to Eden, to

Johnny Keating and all concernedwith this disc." Music For Strings " is a good

number, tuneful, amusing, attractive. And it's easy to imagine SammyDavis Jr. singing (and dancing) it.Eden does well and will do betterwhen he's matured a bit.

* POTTED POPS *FLOYD CRAMER (RCA) tackles the

keyboard in that highly distinctivestyle, tantalising us with " Lovesick

Discreet strings in back-ground. Excellent listening. " TheFirst Hurt " is slower, more reflective.

RON GRAINER and his Group (Fon-tana) have recorded some of the musicwritten by Ron for the film " AKind 01 Loving." The main theme hasan odd mood of discord and turmoilagainst a background of dance -bandsweetness. " Mild And Bitter Blues "is easy to listen to, but not memorable.

HARRY SECOMBE (Philips)ips ) n gsGrinzing," one of those wonderfully

warm, rich Viennese songs. Andwnat's more he sings it with theVienna Concert Orchestra and Chorus, conducted by Wally Stott, Couplingis " The Drinking Song " from " TheStulent Prince" First-class value.

BILLY VAUGHN and his Orchestra(London) provide an instrumental forthe quieter moments, called " Lovers'Guitar." Guitar takes the lead butneedless to say the famous Vaughnsaxophones also have a go. " ChanelBy The Sea " is a pleasant tune, putover in a cornlly sentimental way.

" LAST Night Was Made For Love " is thenew one on Decca from Billy Fury.

It's a most appealing tango and Billy is ingreat form. Billy is nearer to having Presleytype appeal than any otherBritish singer I can think of.

One hundred per cent. recom-mendation from me.

"A King For Tonight" has arock beat, a good tune, but lacksinspiration.

MARTY WILDE" Jezebel " is a song about which

I have strong feelings. It's a favour-ite of mine and was sung incom-

parably by another favourite of mine,Frankie Laine.

So any 1962 -type revivals have tohe good to please me. And I'mglad to say that Marty Wilde's ver-sion on Philips is very good.

Strings and guitars and vocal groupmake up the excellent backing whichbuilds to an exciting climax.

Coupling is a Wilde original "Don'tRun Away," a happily swift -movingsong with a most attractive melody.

Lps By ALLEN EVANS**** THANK YOUR LUCKY

STARS (Decca Ace Of Clubs). Basedon the ABC-TV show, you get plentyof Decca stars on this lower -pricedLP. Billy Fury contributes Jealousy;Jess Conrad adds Twist My Wrist ;Eden Kane, Get Lost ; Karl Denver,Wimoweh ; Doug Sheldon, RunAround Sue ; and Glenda Collins abeaty Find Another Fool-and thoseare just some of the items !

*** MRS. MILLS PLAYS TILEROARING 20'S (Parlophone). Thegenial, rotund lady pianist has ahappy, honkytonk style, and GeoffLove has given her a suitable, drum -predominating backing. The RitaWilliams Singers supply vocals onfive of the 16 tracks. Good partyrecord.

*** CLINTON FORD (Oriole).A pleasant mixture of trad (Huggin'And A-Chaikin', etc), and 1930sdance music hits (Please, SleepyTime Gal), sung with pleasing easeby Ford, and backed tunefully bythe George Chisholm All Stars.Fourteen good tracks here.

*** TRAD SCENE (Decca AceOf Clubs). Four up-and-comingtrad bands contribute three trackseach of cheerful trad on this album-'the Avon Cities (Sally, Magnolia.etc.) ; Alan Eisdon's (Palesteena,I Used To Love You) ; Ian Bell's(Louisiana, New Orleans); and KenBarton's (t've Found A New Baby,Sur Le Pont) etc. Good partydisc.

*** DEUCES WILD: FRANKIELAINE (Philips). There's neverbeen a better singer of the songs ofAmerica's early gambling days thanFrankie Laine, and here are fast -shooting tracks all about the pioneerspushing west. He gives a westernsetting to Camptown Races and triessome Cockney in Man Who BrokeThe Bank At Monte Carlo ! But Iliked The Hard Way and the titletune beat.

***ROUND MIDNIGHT:DAKOTA STATON (Capitol). Smokysinging for late hours, by a girlwho knows how to weave a relaxingspell which will agree with you. Thebacking is by Benny Carter, of anon -jarring character, I liked KnockMe A Kiss, a point number; thehaunting Crosby hit, Folks That LiveOn The Hill, and the heat in So InLove. Just the girl to spend themidnight hour with.

*** RUNAROUND S U E:DION (HMV). To his big hit, thisyoung American adds several I'm -sorry -for -myself songs-Somebody

Nobody Wants, Runaway Girl,Lonely World and Take Good CareOf My Baby - and sings themwell, in a plaintive voice. Better Ifeel are the beatler numbers, likeThe Wanderer, The Majestic andKansas City.*** TEDDY RANDAZZO :

JOURNEY TO LOVE (HMV).Connie Francis first brought thename of Randazzo to me-she toldme to listen out for him. Nowcomes his first album and thepraise Connie gave him was justi-fied. He's a good singer of theslow and fast ballad, without anyattempt at rock or twist on thisLP. Songs are well-known stand-ards, and he's best when swingingSlow Boat To China or beltingTo The Ends Of The Earth.

*4-* ODETTA AT THE CAR-NEGIE HALL (Fontana), accom-panying herself on guitar. Only abass is added, except for a choir onthree tracks, and her powerful andvery warm singing is specially note-worthy in God's A -Gonna Cut YouDown, with no backing at all ! . .

** LET'S GET TOGETHERWITH HAYLEY MILLS (Decca). At first I couldn't believe it. Ithough', it was really DarleneEdwards, who specialises in singingout of tune, dubbing for Miss Mills. Then I realised it must be Bayley. And as I read in the NME lastweek that she thinks her recordsare terrible, I have to salute heras a critic. However, two stars foreffort and getting the words right.Backing is good. And I dare sayat a party this LP might be a realparty -maker.

WEST SIDE STORY music isthe subject of two interestingLPs -*** STAN KENTON hasdone a modern Jazz version forCapitol; and pianists ** FER-RANTE and TEICHER (HMV)devote one side to the Bernsteinscore; the other to six other filmthemes backed by Nick Perito'sorchestra.

LATIN INSTRUMENTAL : If youlike soft, soothing tango music, Iheartily recommend *** THEPASSIONATE VALENTINOTANGOS (Reprise), played byFrancisco Cazardor and his Bar-celona Caballeros . . And forCaribbean dance rhythms, GeorgeHernandez and his orchestra's*** CUBAN FIREWORKS (Star-lite) take some beating . . .

Jazz Jamboree (Modern) stars (I. to r.): RONNIE SCOTT, TONYKINSEY, BILL LE SAGE, I.IZA ASHWOOD, TUBBY HAYES. Theyperformed free of charge for charity on Sunday at the Kilburn State.

Parade of the ModernistsACAPACITY house at KB.,burn's Gaumont State last

Sunday saw for the first time a JazzJamboree composed entirely ofmodern groups. Organised by theMusicians' Social And BenevolentCouncil. the event was inaugurated 23years ago, but only last autumn itVMS decided the British jazz scene badnow become too wide to give fairrepresentation in one show. So twoseparate concerts-trad and modern

been given. The trad show last November was

a great success-and the moderniststurned out in force on Sunday toprove their section equally popular.

Opening were Johnny Dankworth andthe orchestra delivered a succession ofits usual tasteful and sensitive mannerthe orcvhestra delivered a succession offirst-rate jazz numbers. KennyWheeler's trumpet shone in his" Embraceable You " solo, whileJohnny and his alto sax wereubiquitous.

Ronnie Ross followed. His group has

a cool, smooth technique which owesmuch to the earlier influence of GerryMulligan. Bill LA Sage reigned onpiano and vales, a tremendous asset toany small group.

Tubby Hayes, with his newly -formed Quintet took a cheer ofwelcome. The group has an astoundingability to see right into the heart of itsmusic and interpret it as one man.

Tubby also closed the show, leadinghis Big Band.

Allan Ganley's hurried, almost pas-sionate drumming, and the renownedJimmy Deuchar's trumpet provided alively backcloth against which Tubbypainted his melodic figures. Rodgersand Hart's " The Most Beautiful Girtin The World " occupied a brilliantlyinteresting 25 minutes.

The Tony Kinsey Quintet featured theonly vocalist of the afternoon. LizaAshwood. She sang two numbers," Lady Be Good " and " The Man ILove " in a clear, crisp manner,

Veteran jazzman Ronnie Scott, JoeHarriett and his Quintet and thecolourful Phil Seamen group roundedoff this gathering of top moderntalent. CHRIS WILLIAMS.

CLIFF RICHARD'S most brilliant perform-ance to date-that's " I'm Looking Out

The Window " on Columbia. Simple andvery effective, it admirably demonstrates hisvocal skill.

Flip, on which the Shadows addsinging as well as itnstrumentalsupport, is a fast, lively and tunefultwist opus called " Do You \VantTo Dance."

A veritable explosionafter the serious moodYoung Ones."

PET CLARKCharm is the keynote of Pet

Clark's new one for Pye, "Whistlin'For The Moon." The casual anddreamy melody is Italian, thedelightful English lyric is by JackFishman.

There's a captivating rhythmrunning thro' a clever but simplearrangement. Chase away the blueswith a listen to this utterly captivat-ing record.

" Tender Love is a slow romanticballad, " soft as a rose " to quotethe lyric. You have to be in theright mood for this one.

KENNY BALLAfter " Midnight In Moscow "

and " Siamese Children," the obviousthing to do is to find a simple andfamiliar tune that lends itself totrad treatment but has not been it hit,as a likely winner for Kenny Ball andhis Jazzmen.

Pye have done Just this, picking"The Green Leaves Of Summer."Works out extremely well ; can'tfail to be a hit." I'm Crazy 'Bout My Baby " gives

Kenny Ball his customary fliosidechance to sing-and very enjo:,ableit is, too.

TONY VICTORNew on Decca is 20 -year -old

Bradford -born Tony Victor who hascome under the wing of recordingmanager Joe Meek.

Tony has the voice and personalityto put over a fast, punchy rock -beat

ditty like " Dear One," but there'stoo much in the backing to distractattention from the singer.

" There Was A Time " is a pretty, medium -pace song, but over -fussyagain.

of gaThiety

of e MAX BYGRAVESThere's going to be an avalanche

of records of the songs from LionelBart's new musical " Blitz."

Max Bygraves starts it all with" Down The Lane " a simple, corny, cheerful, eminently whistleable Cock-ney song.

The song and Max are perfectfor each other ; this should bea resounding hit." Every Street's A Coronation

Street " will probably appeal to fansof the TV show. On Decca.

VERA LYNNAlso from Blitz " comes " The

Day After Tomorrow " sung byVera Lynn on HMV. A parallel toso many wartime pop songs, sung byVera herself.

Yet, altho' this song is reminiscentof many years ago, it's a perfectlygood offering now.

" Try To Forget " is a slowishballad with gentle suspicions of theLatin-American.

BRUCE CHANNELTwo songs that he wrote himself

have been recorded on Pye Inter-national by Bruce Channel.

Topside is " Run Romance Run,"a number which depends on theoverall effect rather than either thewords or the music for hit potential.

And I'm far from sure that there'senough hit potential in this fastishbeat number.

" Don't Leave Me" would bedescribed simply as a slow ballad ifit weren't for the steady, loud drumbeats which sound as if they don'tbelong.

MEZI The REAL reason JET HARRISSHOULD Jet 'Harris have left the Shadows? That's clearly the topic**--' of the week, and letters have been pouring into the NME officesstating a variety of viewpoints on the subject. But irrespective of howour readers regard the effect of this move on the Shadows' future-an on Jet himself-they are completely unanimous on one point. Aswith Tony Meehan before him, they admire Jet for taking such a boldand ambitious step.

And this response on the part of Jet is an extremely tar -sightedyoung man. H e rega hiself

our readers will undoubtedly please being on the thresholds ofma newcareer. And at the moment. he isdesperately anxious to he accepted-or rejected --on the merits of what hedoes henceforth.

In other words, he is not seekingany special treatment-he doesn't

Jet. inamensely. He has been veryworried-not as to whether he hasmade the right move, for he isfirmly convinced that his decision wasthe cotrect one-hut about the fans'

IL -lion to his departure from the.adows.

want to cash in on his associationwith the Shadows. This, of course, is not easy. For

the fans will not readily forget thepart he played in the triumphant riseof Britain's top small group. But hewould like to think that his newcareer will he viewed quite indepen-dently and separately from his formerwork.

Much depends upon the success ofhis first solo record, which was outin the Decca studios last Saturdayand which will he rush -released in aweek or so. And from what I hear.the disc is going to make a fewpeople sit up and take notice. Forboth sides are very different.

Main title is a revival of the LatinAmerican standard "Sesame Muche,"which features Jet as an instrumen-talist. But on this track he plays acompletely new guitar-a Fender six -string bass guitar.

It's played in just the same wayas an ordinary guitar. but thesound is octaves lower than normal-way down in the Duane Eddyregister.

Although these in-struments are rapidlygaining in popularity inthe States, they are veryrare in this country.Indeed, I rather suspectthat this is the first timeone of them has been

recorded over here.Anyway, you will see that it gives

Jet infinitely more scope than thefour -string bass guitar he was play-ing whilst with the Shadows.

IntrigingBut T fancy that the other side of

the record is likely to prove the moreintriguing-for this is the track onwhich Jet sings. It's a number titled" Chills And Fever," originally waxedlive years ago by an American artistnamed Ronnie Love.

According to Jet's recording man-ager, Jack Good : " He has a real' cool ' voice. I think the best des-cription is a sort of male Ann -Margret. Anyway. this is a record

left the SHADOWSwhich builds to a tremendousclimax."

Accompanying Jet on this sessionwere two guitars. piano, bass, per-cussion, a chorus of six voices-andformer Shadow Tony Meehan ondrums.

Since leaving the Shadows, Jet hasdevoted much of his time-apartfrom preparing for this disc session-talking to Jack Good, and sortingout the direction in which he wantshis career to run. In fact, he's beenstriving to- place his ambitions on amore concrete basis.

He is, of course, anxious toprove himself as an actor, thoughhe realises that he will have totrain hard to this end.But he has accumulated consider-

able wealth during his stay with theShadows and- he is therefore preparedto undertake a stringent course ofcoaching.

My own feeling is that he couldhappen in a big way. I've beenwatching a test film which theShadows made for the projectedvisual -disc process and even in this

Nossetewerreweriesowegvaosinosmall snippet it was possible to sensehis potential.

Given the right script, he coulddevelop into a strong and naturalperformer. And evidently I'm notthe only one who thinks so, for Iknow of two film directors who arewilling to test him when he is ready.

So we return to the basic question-why did Jet leave the Shadows ?And I'll give you the answer in justfive words-because he is an individu-alist.

Jet has always been a lone wolfand, although he admits that it wasgreat to be a Shadow-and expressesgreat admiration for Cliff and theboys --he felt that he was not reallyexpressing himself to full advantagewithin the group.

To Jet Harris. with the Shadowsriding high in the hit parade. itwas a now -or -never decision to leavethem. He chose to make the break. We all admire him for having thecourage of his own convictions, andwe wish him well in his venture.

THE MIRACLE OF TRANSISTORS - IN YOUR HOME

When I recovered my balance. I started -thinking about it.and it occurred to me that I ought to fit into the set-up allright. I've long been friendly with all the boys in theShadows.

Musically, too, I thought, I should manage to settle down.Previously I've played with such artists as Adam Faith.Eddie Cochran, Gene Vincent, Marty- Wilde and TommySteele. As you know, I was at one time a member ofthe Wildcats, which subsequently became" the Krew Kats-but the group broke up about a year ago. and morerecently I've been playing in the pit for Tommy Steele.both in his Yarmouth summer show and his Liverpoolpanto.

So I joined the Shadows optimistically and I'm delighted tosay that it has worked out very much as I had figured.I'm getting along with Hank, Bruce and Brian very wellindeed (Brian, of course, was alsowith me in the Krew Kats)-and Ilike to think I'm stow becomingacclimatised to the Shadows'musical ideas.

Mind you, it was more difficultthan I had expected, I found themain problem was the sheersimplicity of the group's work --everything they do is somethodical, yet at the same timeone step ahead of anyone else.Nevertheless, 1 am gradually

fitting in with their pattern, andadapting myself to the acceptedShadows formula.

Kind to meI must say that the fans have

been extremely kind to me. I supposeit was quite a shock to them whenthey heard that Jet had left, andit isn't easy following in the foot-steps of such a popularpersonality, But the reaction hasbeen favourable, and I'm verygrateful for the trouble so many ofthem have taken to make me feelat home in my new surroundings.

I've already received a shoal ofletters, particularly from the goodpeople in the Liverpool area wherewe played last week. I was par-ticularly delighted by one from anordinary working family in Liverpool, which welcomed me as a new Shadow, and ended simply : " You're all right, son."

It's not easy to express my feel-ings on becoming a member of theacknowledged top small group inthe country. All I can say is thatit is a very great honour-especiallybeing invited to take over from sucha well -liked artist as Jet. And I canonly hope that I can adequatelyfill the gap.

Thanks for all your good wishes.Believe me, I'm going to do mydarnedest to prove worthy of them. And I know that I couldn't have anicer bunch of fellows to give meconfidence than the three seniorShadows.1111111111111111111111111111111111.1111N11111111111111111

NORMAN VAUGHAN'S FIRSTBIG BREAK CLIFF'S TOUR !

EVER felt sorry for the comperewho has to battle against the

impatient audience on big one-nightershows ? After all, it isn't easy tostick to the comedy patter while mostof the audience is in an uproar, call-ing out for the star name to appear.

But Norman Vaughan, who touredmany venues with the Cliff Richardpackages, found it added to his alreadyconsiderable experience and stuck with it.Now, as surely everybody knows, he hasITV's big prestige job for a comedian,as compere of the top -rating " SundayNight At The London Palladium."

Norman's Pye record, " Swinging InThe Rain." which was released on Tues-day (May 1), makes permanent his catch -phrases, "Swinging" and " Dodgy."

An even more accurate reminder ofhis usual Palladium routine is foundon the disc when he says : " I've atouch of the Frank Sinatras." and,on the coupling, " Put On A HappyFace," he says : " This song is dedi-cated to Ena."

No need to tell you that he isreferring to " Coronation Street's "Ena Sharpies, at whom he pokesgentle fun in his act. When I talked to Norman during

rehearsals for a Tommy Steele TVspectacular, he confessed : " Justabout everybody's getting in on theact and saying ' swinging ' and' dodgy.'

Norman came up the hard way.Liverpool -horn in 1927. he started hiscareer with a resident boys' troupe ata small theatre in Leigh, Lancs. Atfifteen he formed the " DancingAces," which consisted of Norman.another boy and a girl. They touredin variety.

During his military service hefound himself at close quarters withsome gents named Harry Secombe,Spike Milligan and Ken Platt-allunknown at the time. When he leftthe army he was booked into a

London club, for which he was paid£17 10s. a week.

He also toured with the Englishversion of "Folies Bergeres," goingwith it to Australia, where he stayedfor two years. Back in Britain hejoined a famous concert party led byClarkson Rose, and appeared inmany provincial shows.

That same year, 1955, saw thestart of Independent TV, and in" Saturday Showtime," the firstvariety series on this channel, Nor-man established himself as a regular. However, this didn't do much forhim except to open a few extra doors.and he tells me that he considers hisfirst real break came when he joinedCliff Richard's package show.

Norman had worked well withaudiences of all types, but now hewas up against something different. He coped extremely well, though, andpromoter Arthur Howes, who saw agreat future for Vaughan, rooted forhim all the way, one of the results

being a South African tour for theGrade Organisation. Last year hedid a season at Blackpool.

When ATV chief Val Parnellhooked Norman for his first Palla-dium TV show a few months ago,it was on the promise that if hemade good, he was in for a series, but if he didn't-well ....It was an important decision for

Norman to make, but, braving thethreat of an overnight crumbledcareer, he went ahead, fully awarethat the last thing he should do wasto be compared in any way with hisfamed predecessor, Bruce Forsyth.

Ask anyone at the Palladium andthey'll tell you how nervous Normanwas on that day-and how he was soill he couldn't eat. A phone call tohis Surrey home from Mr. Parnell thenext day assured him that he was infor the series-a star had been bornin front of twenty million people!

VERNONS

GIRLS

ONCEthere were 16 Vernons

Girls. Then last Christmas theywere reduced to a mere three. Andthis week the group makes its debutin the NME Charts with its punchy,fast-moving waxing of " LoverPlease."

There are Jean Owen (18) andMaureen Kennedy 121), both ofwhom hail from Liverpool-they arethe two auburn -haired girls, by theway. And the trio is completed by22 -year -old blonde Frances Lee -she's another Lancastrian, from St.Helen's.

Their activities were somewhathampered in recent months as aresult of the Equity -ITV dispute, butnow they are back on our screensagain, exploiting their current hit likemad.

First exposure, by the way, was inBBC -TV's " Juke Box Jury "-whenthe girls sat behind the screen andhappily heard the panel vote theirdisc a hit.

Currently fulfilling copious cabaretengagements, the three girls have anextremely important booking linedup for the summer, when they appearin a season show with Billy Fury atGreat Yarmouth.

SHELLEY FABARES

THiSweek's other newcomer to

the NME Chart, sharing 28thplace with the Vernon Girls, is 18 -year -old American singer ShelleyFabares. And whereas the Britishteam are handling a number whichclimbed to seventh spot in the State-side top table, Shelley's vehicle isthe song she carried to the covetedNo. 1 slot there.

Although a new name to mostof our readers, Shelley is well-knownto fans in the States, where she isalready established as one of theirleading teenage television actress -

She was dan-cing at the ageof four, model-ling children's

clothes two years later - and whenshe was nine she appeared if youplease, in Frank Sinatra's TVspectacular !

Shelley, who comes from SantaMonica in California, has also madeseveral films. including " Never SayGoodbye," Rock Pretty Baby " and" Summer Love." She graduatedfrom high school last June, and isnow well set in her career as anactress-like her 20 -year -old sister,Smokey.

On Donna Reed's TV series,Shelley shares billing with singer PaulPetersen. By coincidence, Paul hasa new release on Pye-International-and on one of the sides, " VeryUnlikely," Shelley is featured duettingwith him. B.C.

SINATRA JOINSTHE TWISTERS

THE snipers who make a habit of firing barragesof insults at Frank Sinatra just because it

seems to be the vogue, have no doubt had a fewfield days with the fact that " The Voice " hasrecorded a twist number to get into the chart.

But this argument cannot really stand up when youconsider that Sinatra's record firm, Reprise, is nowrunning at full steam and Frank, as artist and executive, has no choice but to wax exactly what the public wants.

The public wants Sinatra. They cannot have too muchof this ageless veteran of the vocal business, and almostanything he puts on record is immediately acceptable to avery large circle of people throughout the world.

Like all artists, Frank has his own ideas when it comesto the songs he would like to record. But, as so oftenhappens, these numbers aren't always commercial, and it'sthe job of the a -and -r manager to put on wax those likelyto have the widest appeal.

Louis Benjamin, as head of Pye Records, is responsiblefor Reprise here, and tells me that at no time did Sinatrathink that his label would issue only work that could beclassed as uncommercial and would be used for the " artisticwhims of his friends."

Instead, he found Sinatra alive and abounding with ideasabout the label. He was also extremely receptive to anysuggestions that Benjamin and his colleague, Roger Threlfall, made. Further proof of this came when Benjamin metSinatra a short time later in Aus-tralia, and Frank discussed furtherthe points that had been made attheir first meeting.

It was really no surprise to meto learn that Sinatra had, for thefirst time that I can recall, joinedin on a current craze. And whenI heard "Ev'rybody's Twistin'," itimmediately occurred to me thatthis is the only ome of the twistdiscs yet released that could wellbecome a standard,

In fact, "Ev'rybody's Twistin"'is an up -dated version, with alteredlyric, of an oldie, " Ev'rybody'sTruckin'," and is published byPeter Maurice. In spite of otherimpressions given by some discjockeys who have obviously been

misinformed, Sinatra never recordedthis number in its original form.

The new version will stand up toa lot of wear even after the twisthas been replaced by something else. After all, there's nothing reallyfrantic and up-to-the-minute aboutit, is there ? It's cool Sinatracaught before a microphone in oneof his better moods and is cer-tainly worthy of the spins it ;sgetting.

Anyway, it's good to see Frankback in the charts, particularly ata time when he is more in the newsthan ever because of his impendingvisit to Britain.News of his concerts and recording

certainly captured the imagination ofthe public, for there is a fantasticdemand for tickets for his personalappearances.

What can we expect to see ofSinatra on stage ? Well, don't hopefor too much and you won't bedisappointed, for as with so manyother things, you always expect anunknown quantity that is labelled asthe best there is, to be so muchbetter !

Reports differ on how Sinatra's acthas matured since his concert tourhere in the early 'fifties. RussConway saw him working in theStates and confessed to me after-wards that he was slightly disap-pointed, as Sinatra didn't go in fordynamics-he just stood there andsang !

NME managing director MauriceKinn (writing about the Americanscene in our Tenth AnniversarySouvenir Book) also reports that heis disappointing.

" While I have the greatestadmiration for him as a discsinger, I have noticed in recentyears there has been a great strainon his voice and on the four occa-sions I have seen him perform inthe past five years he seemed tohave the greatest difficulty inretaining his voice for a completeact," he writes.Fair comment. It's up to you to

ANinterviewer asked Peggy

Lee to define success :fulfilment of what you were bornto do. I know I was born tosing, but there's more. I wantto write more music, to paintmore, and I have a burning urge, after experimenting with clay, toget a big hunk of stone and seewhat I can do with it."

COME on, all you disc -jockeys --what on earth's thematter with you ? Do you realise that up to last

weekend, by which time B. Bumble's " Nut Rocker"was in the NME Top Ten, it had not received one singleairplay on BBC sound radio ?

Yet the disc has not been banned by the BBC-which,incidentally, shows great inconsistency on their part. Forthey usually make no bones about clamping down heavily onanything that is adapted from the classics. But in thisinstance, although Mr. Bumble is taking a diabolical libertywith Mr. Tchaikovsky, the Corporation has nodded itshead in approval.

Indeed, the actual number has received several live per-formances on the Light Programme-the Bob Miller andOscar Rabin Bands, as well as the Northern Dance Orchestra, have played it. And it has been featured by pianists in

Saturday Club " and " Easy Beat."But although they were permitted

to play it the dee-jays shunned it.Which I consider very naughty ofthem. For although their pro-grammes should, to some extent, reflect their own tastes and per-sonalities, they are also under anobligation to the listening public.

True, Alan Freeman played it in" Pick Of The Pops " on Sunday-but it's the policy of the programmeto feature the Top Ten. Indeed, thefirst BBC d -j to play the disc of hisown accord was David Jacobs onMonday.

" Nut Rocker " was a potentialhit from the moment of its release. It had climbed high in the Americantop table, as any self-respecting disc -jockey should know. This wasfurther substantiated by the teenagepanel on ABC -TV's Thank YourLucky Stars," who sensed that it wasdestined to become a hit. Andalthough BBC -TV's " Juke BoxJury " couldn't make up their minds.the second panel of teenagers hadno doubt about declaring it a hit.

Final boostThe final boost was given by Radio

Luxembourg, on whose wavelengthEMI have been plugging it furiouslyin their own programmes-though letit also be said that the residentjockeys haven't been as snooty astheir BBC counterparts, for they havecondescended to play Mr. Bumble'seffort

So this disc looks like anothertriumph for Radio Luxembourg. ButI do feel strongly that the peopleresponsible for presenting BBC recordshows should not display such violentprejudice and bias. Perhaps the discis beneath their dignity. But theirjob is to provide a service to thepublic, and in missing out on this hitdisc, they simply haven't been doing it.

Those of you who read our intro-ductory article to B. Bumble threeweeks ago will know that this, infact, is his real name. This articlealso gave some background informa-tion on the Stingers, who have nowbeen in existence for a couple of years.

Not first

STOP PRESS : Here is new line-up of theSTINGERS (with one musician added). On left isdrummer DON ORR, then B. BUMBLE. Other twoare LOU JOSIE (rhythm guitar) and TERRYANDERSON (electric guitar)-hut there is no indica-tion which is which,

Nut Rocker " is not their firststab at the classics. For a little whileago they enjoyed a Stateside hit with" Bumble Boogie," which you mayremember is a rhythmic adaptationof Rimsky-Korsakov's " Flight OfThe Bumble Bee." Years ago, thiswas waxed by the Freddy MartinOrchestra, and at the time wasregarded as a prime example ofboogie-woogie piano playing.

Why the musical snobs are sud-denly turning their backs on NutRocker," I can't imagine. " Badtaste is their usual excuse. Butactually, Bumble employs only a veryfew bars of the overture from theNutcracker Suite on this disc-mostof the rest is his own invention.

Of course, the only person whoremains aloof fom the controversysurrounding the record is B. Bumblehimself. And quite frankly, he couldn't care

less. For controversy is always goodfor sales.

And as he listens to his royaltiestinkling in the cash registers, B.Bumble must be thinking to himselfthat he's cut a honey of a disc !

RIP-ROARING DONEGAN!DONEGAN'S rip-roaring, brash approach had the S. H.LONNIE1-4

Newsome " Spring Show " first -night audience in ecstasy at ManchesterPalace on Tuesday.

With an act hinged largely on his record hits, Lonnie won roof -raisingacclaim for such vintage specialities as "Have A Drink On Me," '' My OldMan's A Dustman " and Gamblin' Man."

Needless to say, he featured his current hit parade success " The Party'sOver," which formed a moving and sincere closing to the act.

But Donegan's success is not limited to his established songs. He workswell with comedians Jewel and Warriss as costermongers and brings thehouse down with them when, suitably costumed, they appear as the CleverlySisters. Another highlight is his twist dance with Audrey Jeans. E.M.B.
