Letter from the SecretaryLetter from the SecretaryLetter from the SecretaryLetter from the Secretary

Dear Friends,

Hi! How are you all? ‘Hope the year ended has given you some time to think and rethink about your next step of actions towards development. It’s a great pleasure for me to present the Annual Report (2013-2014) to share our Endeavour, achievement and impact in myriads of people centered rural development interventions carried in some disadvantaged villages of Paschim Medinipur District of the state of West Bengal keeping emphasis on the target people – the poor, the marginalized, the dalits, the socially disadvantaged, the women and the children. Studying the impact of globalization and new economic policies, extreme polarization of haves and have nuts and political dichotomy offending adversely the poor specially the rural ones and smooth functioning of NGOs, we put special thrust to combat the situation on capacity building of our target people, optional mobilization and utilization of local resources in the development of the people and the area. We have also put special emphasis on gender development, women’s access to resources, responsible participation in democratic structure, formation of Self Help Groups and thereby launch sustainable micro enterprise initiative towards self reliance of women. This year we have undertaken No. of programmes in tune with the people and of the area. We have taken a definite step to preserve tribal’s culture by organizing several programmes for them and we have also tried to bring tribal culture and traditional folk culture of Bengal like Jatra, A Santal dramatic unit has been emerged as a conscience of our effects. Moreover, I would not like to speak like a talk machine and prefer you to go through next few pages to assess and analyze what actually we have done in the context of development. I record deep appreciation for the co-operations, we have received for local self govt., different administrative functionaries and also for our own human resources and the people as all levels who shared their agonies as well as ecstasies for their commitment to develop a self reliant society in the barriers of constrains as well as hardships. We know, being a new comer in the development field we have to pass many hurdles, but that’s a way of life too! Thanks. Haripada Giri Secretary

Own project:- The society has leased some Agri. Land for Agricultural purposes. The modern agricultural system followed of these land. During the year we cultivated potato, Vegetable, oil Seeds etc. . Workshop: In terms of various activities, we engaged ourselves for most of the times conducting workshops of different kinds. Naturally the participants were also from different categories and segments of the society. We feel firmly that, any activities for the social development becomes effective and fruitful through the mental upliftment with benevolent attitude. As a society cannot have its existence without human being similarly no problems can be solved without dipping into its roots. We have been trying through our

workshops with various types of classes with different ages and social surroundings for their upliftment so that they taste a healthy social life and can sustain within that atmosphere. To achieve that value of life and create a healthy society some sort of tools are necessary to teach them. Those tools are nothing but Art and Culture. Those artistic and cultural activities do not end to presentation on stage but these cultural activities spread in the minds of men, on the streets and in natural surroundings under open sky. We have continued these cultural activities with different kinds of men at different place successfully this year also. Support:- Barnamala Educational & Cultural Society had a difficult fundraising year. We were not able to raise sufficient support to meet our growth plans and had to dip into some of our emergency reserves. This turned out to be a huge opportunity in disguise. It helped us strengthen our fundraising approach, tighten our belt, let go of some non-core activities and become more efficient in the process. Having said that, we did get some strong support from some of our existing and new supporters. We continued to have a strong support from Individual donors who form the backbone of our organization. This happened through direct donations.. A heartfelt thank you for all the individuals who believe in this work, believe in the future of young people and have come forward to invest in that future.
