Notes for William Orr:General Notes: by Bill Brady:In 16 Jul 1800 under his father's will he received sasine of the 20/- land of Kame. There is no mention of Barmochloch and no Clare Constat. On 21 Dec 1802 he was given the new house by his uncle James. Feeling perhaps that the sasine he had received in 1800 was not complete, in 1833 he applied for a precept of sasine from his lawful superior Mrs Margaret Harvey of Castle Semple. She recognised him as nearest and lawful heir to his grandfather and gave a precept of Sasine and Clare Constat to the 20/- land of Kaim and the 10/- land of Barmochloch for a yearly payment of £40.12.0 Scots. Sasine was given in the usual manner on 24 Jul 1833.

In the census of 1841 he appears as a farmer in Kame aged 60.In the census of 1851 Kame was let to David Galbraith.

Elizabeth Orr McKell recorded in 1913 that the house at Kaim had been remodelled in 1825 and that the initials above the door were WO-JB, [William Orr-Janet Brodie] 1825

The liner Persia left London on 18th December 1915, and was about 70 miles off the coast of Crete at 1.10pm on the 30th of that month when it was torpedoed without warning by U-38. The target was struck on the port bow and 5 minutes later the boiler blew up and the ship was lost. Of 501 persons aboard there were only 167 survivors, most of whom were picked up by a trawler around 30 hours after the attack.

The SS Persia was built by Caird & Co., Greenock, in 1900 while William's cousin, J.T. Hepburn, was working there.

Notes for William Crawford:General Notes: William's date of birth is not known. His headstone and various census records give different dates.The year 1796 is used because it appears on two different census records.

William was a wool mill owner at Calder Glen. He was in partnership with his older brother John. According to JT Hepburn he was from Ayrshire and began his working life as an apprentice.

Andro Crawfurd wrote in the Cairn of Lochwinnoch, about June of 1836, (volume 26, page 348);

" The Crawfurds have taken the mill from Colonel Harvey - driven by the Cloke Burn near the millhouse. William goes to collect the raw materiel. Ship it and disembark it at Port Glasgow. Humphray Barbour, Alan Gilmore, Jamie Storie each frequently bring it with their carts up. They sell their yarn to the Kilmarnock carpet manufacturers. They sent their carts every fortnight thither.One of the partners accompany their carts. They employ 22 spinners, piecers, carders, etc forby themselves. Their mill was erected by Mr. Adam in 1814. He sold it to Harvey."

One of the products that his mill produced in later years was blankets, one of which is still in the possession of Jessie (Hepburn) Williams.

Notes for Alexander Holmes:General Notes: From A Story from Memory by JTO Hepburn;"My grandmother was an energetic old woman. She had a will of iron and many were the stories my mother told when she was in a reminiscent mood of things which had happened in her younger days. As I mentioned earlier she was brought up on a farm, The Kaim, about two miles out the Greenock Road from Lochwinnoch. One of her sisters, Janet Orr, had married Sandy Holmes of Ladymuir Farm about a mile further out the Greenock Road. Sandy was quite a character. He was very fond of a fast riding horse and a fast drink of whiskey every time he came

After a time the whiskey got the upper hand and work at the farm degenerated even though he had a large family to feed. There were six sons and three daughters, one of the last yet a baby. Some of the Orrs had by that time emigrated to Canada so Janet Orr decided to leave Sandy to his whiskey and do likewise. She and all the family left him and took up residence in her sister Agnes Crawford’s house to wait for a ship sailing to Canada. They were there a few weeks when one fair day Sandy Holmes rode up the street with a basket of eggs on his arm. He shouted and swore for his wife to come home but did not get down from his horse. Grandma Crawford had no men folk in the house at the time but picked up her heaviest poker and stood behind her front door, ready for Sandy if he should enter. Sandy seemed to know the character of Agnes Crawford for he confined himself to loud abuse and the battering of the strong door with eggs.

Shortly after that the family sailed from the Clyde for Canada. My mother remembers the day well because her cousin, Peter Holmes, the youngest son of the family hadn’t a suit of clothes fit for a boy of four. So, he got one of my mother’s best velvet frocks and had to go dressed as a little girl. When he came back to Scotland to begin business as a carriage builder in Glasgow when he was a young man my mother didn’t mention anything about the velvet frock.

Sandy Holmes followed later to Canada and was again the head of the house. He was older and wiser then but I never heard any details of his life in Canada. The Holmes family had their headquarters in Woodstock. In 1954 I met there a Miss Mary Holmes who was still staying in the original Holmes house at 58 Finkle Street. She was a granddaughter of Sandy Holmes and Janet Orr from Ladymuir in Lochwinnoch, Scotland."

"Jessie Brodie Hepburn (nee Crawford) the wife of James Hepburn of Biggar and Glasgow, was born at Lochwinnoch in 1849. Her mother, William Crawford's second wife, Agnes Orr of Kaim, and the younger of two of a Crawford family. William Crawford Jr., her brother had died unmarried in 1880 and Jessie had married James Hepburn at Lochwinnoch when 22 years old in 1871. After the death of her husband in Glasgow in 1894 the grain business was sold and she moved with daughter Addie to the Crawford house at Lochwinnoch and twenty-two years later, the old house of eight rooms was sold to the Lochwinnoch Gas Co. and they moved to a cottage at Johnshill which belonged to a cousin, an Orr of Kaim, (later to the Dickie family) and my mother died there in 1941.

My mother's father, William Crawford, had one daughter from his first marriage, namely Mary Crawford, who married a Mr Wright of Manchester who had been a clerk in the wool mill of the Crawford's at Lochwinnoch. After the wedding they moved to Manchester when my mother was a girl and their descendants are mostly there yet. We have lost touch with them principally because Crawford property and belongings was left to my mother."

Jessie died at Lochwinnoch in 1941.

"James Hepburn, (the writers father) was born at Biggar in 1842, educated at a Biggar school and served an apprenticeship as a salesman in a dry-goods store in Biggar. Next door to this store was a hardware shop run by a Mr. Gladstone, a second cousin of the William Edward Gladstone who later was the Prime Minister of England in London. James Hepburn later worked at the same trade in Lesmahagow and Glasgow. In Glasgow he was with a large company in Argyle St. named Mann, Buyers & Co. Ltd. For several years (which is still flourishing) and in a neighbouring office met a William Crawford Jr. of Lochwinnoch. He was invited to visit the Crawford family there quite a few times who were the owners of the Crawford Wool Mills of Lochwinnoch and was later engaged to be married to Jessie Crawford (sister of William Crawford Jr.) whom he married at Lochwinnoch in 1871. They lived in Biggar near the Hepburn's shop and my sister Agnes and I were born there. We went to Biggar schools until I was ten and Addie was 13, then we moved to Crosshill, Glasgow in 1885, a suburb near the lovely Queen's Park. We had a flat at 20 Dixon Avenue, off Victoria road, then moved to 10 Carrington St., at the west end of the city (off Great Western Rd.) in 1887 to be near a grain store my father had opened in St. George Rd. near St. George Cross, which was carried on until he died in 1894, when 51 years of age. Then mother and sister moved to the old Crawford house at Lochwinnoch which had been left to her on Grandma Crawford's death in 1891. James Hepburn was buried at the old Lochwinnoch graveyard at the foot of Johnshill Road, beside the ruins of the ancient church of the village, a relicof reformation days."

William Holmes of Irvine, Scotland, who was a cousin of the writer mother, Jessie Brodie Crawford of Lochwinnoch (who married James Hepburn of Biggar) was born at the farm of Ladymuir, on the Greenock Road, five miles north of Lochwinnoch. William Holmes’ mother was Janet Orr of Kaim, who married Alex. Holmes of Ladymuir, in the Parish of Kilmalcolm, Renfrewshire. The family had moved to Woodstock Ontario but William Holmes returned to Scotland and started a business in Irvine in carriage building. He married Ann Reid of Knowhead, a younger sister of Mrs. Andrew Muirhead of Lochwinnoch, and a cousin of Roberta Reid of Victoria, BC. William Holmes died in (about 1912) ?

- Anne Holmes, eldest daughter of Wm Holmes, born at Irvine, married Archibald McGregor, manager of a shipbuilding company of Irvine, and had three of a family. He became manager of a shipbuilding company at Leith and died there.

- William Holmes, eldest son of Wm and Ann Reid, was educated at Irvine and was partner in the carriage building business. He took a trip to Canada when a young man, and had an accident on the liner coming back to Scotland, from which he never recovered, and died a few months later.

- Jessie, 2nd daughter of Wm Holmes. She married Dr Paterson of Irvine and had six of a family.

- Robert Holmes, 2nd son of Wm Holmes, was trained also in the carriage building business. When his father and mother died about 1912, he emigrated to Australia and died there a few years later.

- Isabella Holmes, 3rd daughter of Wm Holmes, was the last member of the family to survive and died in a nursing home in Milikan Park, (near Johnstone) in 1958. She was always known as Isa, and did not marry. She was a frequent visitor to the Hepburns at Lochwinnoch.

The weddings of Anne and Jessie at the large house of the Holmes family in Irvine were attended by the Hepburns (including the writer) and left many happy memories (that was before he came to Canada in 1909, by a few years).

James Thomas Orr Hepburn, son of James and Jessie Hepburn, born in Biggar, 19 May 1875. Educated at Hutchison's Boys School and Allan Glen's Technical School, Glasgow and graduated in 1890. He served a five year apprenticeship at Watson, Laidlaw & Co's engineering works in Glasgow. Then was twelve years as draughtsman and designer in mechanical engineering work (including latterly, motor car design) in various companies in Glasgow and Coventry. Was a partner for two years in Abbot Engineering Co of Paisley, which was financed by a second cousin, R.B. Dickie of Troon. Sold out share in the Abbot Eng. Co. in 1909 and emigrated to Canada. Worked about 17 years as Chief Engineer to Nanaimo & South Wellington Coal Company with a two year period for a change of occupation to fruit growing in Keating Sannich, near Victoria. Retired at 70 on a civil service pension in 1945 to Parksville, Vancouver Island, and later when 80 moved to Victoria, then to North Surrey B.C. in 1959, to be beside our daughter Nancy Vincent. He married, Margaret McLean Smith of Nanaimo in 1911. She had emigrated to B.C. with her family in 1910 from Shettleston, near Glasgow and was the second daughter of Neil McLean Smith who was born at Huntsfield Farm, Biggar in 1854and died in Nanaimo in 1925.

James Thomas Hepburn, born 12th March 1912, at Nanaimo, B.C., eldest son of James T.O. and Margaret Hepburn, educated at a Nanaimo school, then at Cedar District School till 1927 when the family moved to Victoria. He graduated from Victoria High School in 1929 and worked as a draughtsman for a patent agent in Victoria till 1932, when he started work as a radio technician with Island Tug and Barge Co. of Victoria till 1940. He married Molly Moyer, the secretary for the Island Tug & Barge Co., in 1941. He became a partner in the Spillsbury & Hepburn Radio Co. of Vancouver in 1941, which developed into the Queen Charlotte Air Lines in 1944. They then sold out to the Pacific Western Air Lines in 1957. James is now the manager of the Radio Telecommunications Council of B.C. and owner of rental property in apartment blocks in Vancouver and a country cottage and acreage at Matsqui which is the headquarters of his radio work. They have two of a family, James Peter Hepburn, born 1943, a college student of the U.B.C. of Vancouver and a future electrical engineer in spaceships probably. Mary Jean Hepburn, born 1946, now at high school in Vancouver and preparing for work as the future head of a modern household.

Agnes Nelson Crawford Vincent (nee Hepburn), born 2nd March 1914 at Nanaimo B.C. Educated at Nanaimo, Cedar District and Victoria schools and a graduate of Victoria High School in 1931. Married Frederic Vincent of Saskatchewan, at Parksville on July 1, 1946 after several years working during the war in an airplane factory in Vancouver and assistant nurse at the Vancouver General Hospital later. Has three children who were born at Bralorne, B.C. where their father worked in the gold mines there. Douglas S. born in 1947, Margaret and Irene (twins) born in 1948. Moved to Surrey, B.C. (near New Westminster) in 1950, where the family are now at school. Frederick Vincent was born at Earl Grey, Saskatchewan in 1904 and was in the Canadian Air Force during the Second World War.

iii. Nelson Smith Hepburn. He was born on 30 Oct 1917. He married Josephine Lois Cook. They were married on 01 Jun 1940. He died on 13 Apr 2005.

Nelson Smith Hepburn, born at Nanaimo 30th Oct. 1917. Educated at Cedar District and Victoria schools. Trained as a mechanic and wood turner in Victoria til 2nd World War. He joined the Volunteer Branch of the 9th Coastal Battery, R.C.A. in 1937 and was transferred to the Canadian Army in 1939, at the end of the war in 1945, retired as Lieutenant. Was married to Josephine Cook of Victoria on June 1st 1943. Attended Vancouver University, 1946 to 1950 and graduated as B.Sc. in Civil Engineering and was appointed a member of the Professional Engineers Association of B.C. in 1953. He was a draughtsman with the Highway Department in the Parliament Buildings, Victoria, 1952-1956 and a partner in A.B. Sanderson Co. Consulting Engineers for bridges and structural work from 1957 to date.

They have three of a family, Roberta L. Hepburn, born 1941 now a college student at U.B.C. and in the summer, an expert caterer at the Banff Springs Hotel, Malcolm Bruce Hepburn, born 1945, a future worker in protons, deuterons and radio active isotopes ! and Catherine Anne Hepburn, born 1956 and just started school in Vancouver, the youngest and liveliest of her generation and has more electrical energy than her namesake in the theatrical line.

iv. Jessie Crawford Hepburn. She was born on 23 Mar 1922 in Cedar Creek, BC. She married John Elliott Williams. They were married on 04 Apr 1942 in Victoria, B.C..
