Preamble RuTAG-IIT Delhi conducted a regional workshop on April 17, 2015at National Institute of Technical Teachers Training and Research (NITTTR) Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh with the help of Mr. S. R. Azad of Madhya Pradesh Vigyan Sabha, Gyan Vigyan Parisar Sagonikalan, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. The program was attended by about 33participants from about 10 NGOs, 1 Faculty member from MANIT Bhopal, 3 faculty members from NITTTR Bhopal,2 faculty members from IGNOU, Bhopal, 1 faculty member from Laxmipati Institute of Science and Technology, 1 Scientist form CAIE Bhopal and Former Vice Chancellor of Mahatama Gandhi Chitrakoot Gramodaya Vishwavidyalaya, Chitrakoot, Madhya Pradesh.

1. Inauguration Session The program started with the welcome address byProf. S. K. Saha, (Coordinator/Principal Investigator of RuTAG IIT Delhi). See Fig. 1. He briefly explained about the agenda of the workshop and introduced RuTAG IIT Delhi. He also mentioned the role of Madhya Pradesh Vigyan Sabha (MPVS) Bhopal in hosting and coordinating the workshop and invited Mr. S. R. Azad of MPVS Bhopal, to welcome all the participants. Mr. Azad briefly mentioned about the activities of his organization and welcomed all the participants, as seen in Fig.2.

Mr. Raj Kumar Gupta (workshop coordinator), invited Former Vice Chancellor Dr. Gyanindra Singh of Mahatama Gandhi Chitrakoot Gramodaya Vishwavidyalaya, Chitrakoot, Madhya Pradesh for his inaugural speech.

Dr. Gyanindra Singh mentioned about his association with various Govt. Organizations such as Ministry of Rural Development, Ministry of Agro-development, etc. He also mentioned about various problems in farming sector, such as, water pollution in irrigation, depleting water table, etc. He added that farming is no longer a profitable business therefore farmers are shifting to other sectors such as horticulture, etc. He told that bullocks are no longer viable for farming as cost of maintaining pair of bullocks has increased substantially. He emphasised that profitability must be associated with the development of farm sector machinery.

The program continued with a round of introduction of the participants

2. Technical Session 1 Major S. Chatterjee, who is the Senior Project Consultant of RuTAG IIT Delhi and co-ordinators of central RuTAG from the Office of the PSA(Fig. 4), mentioned about the objectives and mandate of the RuTAG Programme at seven IITs. He explained different technologies developed at various RuTAG Centres. He highlighted a few technologies, e.g., Improved Sanitary Napkins, Coir rope making machine, Jute rope making machine, Pirn winding machine, Foot operated Amber charkha, Muri making machine, Sabai grass rope making machine, Foldable bridge over irrigation canals, Bageshwari charkha, Multi nutrient compressed feed block making machine for yak, Activated charcoalfrom bamboo, Fish cage project by IIT Bombay, Improved metallurgy of Horse shoe by IIT Kanpur. Tricycle for physically challenged persons and the recently developed retractablefoot bridge developed by Research & Development Establishment(RDE) Pune (a DRDO Lab). He also mentioned about the role which Mr. Bhagwati and CGCRI had played in developing Microwave compatible red and white clay pottery items.

In the same session, Prof. S.K. Saha presented several completed and on-going projects ofRuTAG IIT Delhi(Fig. 5). He categorized the projects under Energy, Agriculture, Food Processing, Empowerment, and Human Resource Development. He explained about animal driven gear box, bullock driven tractor (old and new), treadle pump, solar pump, de-husking of minor millets, garlic processing machines like graders, bulb breaker, flaker, dry garlic peel remover, Fruwash technology developed by Prof. H.M. Chawala, Tulsi Mala making machine, improvisations going on in Bangles making furnace, tools, seating arrangement, etc. Biogas conversion kit, Micro-hydel testing setup at IIT Delhi, sheep hair shearing device etc.

Technical Session 2 was conducted by Major Chatterjee. Around 13 participants (Fig.6) explained briefly about their organisational activities and problems, which are as follows:

RuTAG IIT Delhi Remarks

IIT Delhi will collect information on latest technologies available and arrange discussion with Madhya Pradesh Vigyan Sabha (MPVS), Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.

4. Concluding Session

After listening to all the above problems, Major S. Chatterjee told the

participants that RuTAG IIT Delhi will analyse all the problems. Selection of the problems will be done according to the mandate of RuTAG. Selected NGOs will be either called upon or RuTAG IIT Delhi team will visit for detailed discussion on the problem. Prof. S.K. Saha and Mr. S. R. Azad thanked all the participants.

The representatives of RuTAG IIT Delhi have discussed the presentations

made by the NGOs and the comments received during the discussion. The remarks have appeared under “IIT Remarks” after the discussion of every presentation. It is expected that some of them can be considered as the new projects.
