The President of Majlis-e-Ulama-e-Shia (Europe),
Hujjatul-Islam Maulana Zafar Abbas, called for re-
gional Imamia Council meetings in which he with
other members of the Majlis would meet with the rep-
resentatives of the local Islamic centres and Imam-
bargahs.
On 14th August 2015, a regional Imamia Council
meeting was held at Idara-e-Maarif-e-Islam, Birming-
ham, in which the President of Majlis-e-Ulama-e-Shia
(Europe), Hujjatul-Islam Maulana Zafar Abbas, Mau-
lana Syed Amir Hussain Naqvi, Maulana Syed Sajjad
Hussain Naqvi and Maulana Syed Asrar Hussain
Kazmi (Information Secretary), with Raja Dilpazeer
saheb (Imamia Council Co-ordinator), met with rep-
resentatives of various organisations in the region.
The Fatima Education Society of Walsall, Anjuman-e-
Qaaim-e-Aal-e-Muhammad of Coventry, Jafferi Is-
lamic Community Centre of Stoke-on-Trent and the
Hussaini Mission of Wolverhampton were represent-
ed, as well as the hosts Idara-e-Maarif-e-Islam, Bir-
mingham.
On 19th August, a regional Imamia Council meeting
in Slough was called by the President in which Mau-
lana Muazzam Ali Qummi (Vice President), Maulana
Syed Raza Haider Rizvi (General Secretary), Maulana
Syed Hasan Abbas Rizvi (Treasurer) also attended,
and the following Islamic centres were represented:
Al-Quaim Islamic Mission of Slough (the hosts),
Imam Ali (a.s.) Centre of High Wycombe, Al-Zahra
Centre of Watford and Zainabiya Welfare Foundation
of Reading.
Similarly, a regional Imamia Council meeting was
called in Manchester at the Jaffaria Islamic Centre on
23rd August, and the President Al-Haj Maulana Zafar
Abbas, Maulana Syed Azhar Hussain Naqvi (Public
Relations Secretary), Maulana Syed Fida Hussain Bu-
khari (Education Secretary), Maulana Asghar Yazda-
ni, Maulana Syed Shabbir Hussain Naqvi and Maula-
na Qaswar Abbas, met with representatives of vari-
ous Islamic Centres of the region: Jaffaria Islamic
Centre, Al-Hussain Masjid, Al-Raza Foundation, Al-
Muntazar and Ahl-e-Bayt TV of Manchester, as well

as Masjid-e-Zainabiya of Blackburn, Hussainia Islam-
ic Mission of Bradford and Anjuman-e-Muhibban-e-
Ahl-e-Bayt of Burnley.
Most recently, such a regional Imamia Council meet-
ing was held on 28th August at Idara-e-Jafariya, Lon-
don, in which representatives of the hosts Idara-e-
Jafariya, S. I. Education Society, and Al-Noor Islamic
Centre attended and met with the President of the
Majlis as well as Maulana Syed Raza Haider Rizvi
(General Secretary), Maulana Syed Hasan Abbas
Rizvi (Treasurer) and Maulana Syed Ashiq Hussain
Naqvi.
The concerns and issues facing the Shia Community
in general as well as those facing the committees run-
ning the Islamic centres were discussed, such as the
need for close positive-minded coordination between
the Ulama and the Islamic Centres and between the
Centres themselves, the necessity of educating the
children and the youth, security concerns of the Cen-
tres, financial problems and possible solutions, utili-
sation of modern means of communication such as
social media, and manners in which the Community
can be encouraged to attend and participate more at
their local Centres.

Jannat-ul-Baqee’ is situated to the east of Masjid-ul-
Nabi (s.a.w.s.) in Madinah. It was an area that was
covered by gharqad (lycium) trees, hence it was origi-
nally called Jannat-Baqee’il-Gharqad, but became
shortened and commonly called Jannat-ul-Baqee’.
It became a cemetery exclusively for the Muslims in
Madinah, at the time of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.),
while the Jews had a separate cemetery by the name
of Hash-Kawkab.
Throughout the centuries many were buried in Jan-
natul-Baqee’, from the offspring of the Holy Prophet
(s.a.w.s.) and his companions, to the many Muslims
and scholars of the subsequent generations.
History of Jannat-ul-Baqee’
It is said that the first to be buried in Jannat-ul-Baqee’
amongst the Muslims was As’ad ibn Zurarah al-
Ansari. He was the first Muslims to die after the Mi-
gration, and the first upon whom the Prophet
(s.a.w.s) offered the Salatul-Janazah (the funeral pray-
er) there.
Amongst the Migrant Companions (Muhajiroon), the
first to be buried in Jannat-ul-Baqee’ was Uthman ibn
Ma’dhun. To his side, the Prophet (s.a.w.s) laid to rest
his infant son Ibrahim (a.s.). At this point the trees
were ordered to but cut down, and it became the cen-
tral cemetery for the Muslims.
Four of the Infallible Imams (a.s.) were then buried
there too:
Imam Hasan al-Mujtaba (a.s.)
Imam Ali Zain-ul-Abideen (a.s.)
Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (a.s.)
Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq (a.s.)
It is also greatly probable that the same area is where
the beloved daughter of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.)
and the mother of the Imams (a.s.), Sayyeda Fatima al
-Zahra (s.a.) is buried, as well as her martyred still-
born son Mohsin (a.s.). It is also possible, according to
some reports, that the head of Sayyid-ul-Shuhada
Imam Husain (a.s.) is also buried here.
Apart from this, the following notable close kith and
kin of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) and his offspring
are buried in the vastly expanded Jannat-ul-Baqee’:
Haleemah al-Sa’diyah, the wet-nurse and foster
mother of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.)
Fatimah bint Asad, the mother of Ameer-ul-
Momineen Ali ibn Abi Talib (a.s.)
Abbas ibn Abdul-Muttalib, the uncle of the Ho-
ly Prophet (s.a.w.s.)
Umm-ul-Baneen, the wife of Ameer-ul-
Momineen Ali ibn Abi Talib (a.s.) and mother
of Abbas ibn Ali (a.s.) and his brothers
Abdullah ibn Ja’far al-Tayyar, the husband of
Sayyeda Zainab (s.a.)
Aqeel ibn Abi Talib, the brother of Ameer-ul-
Momineen Ali ibn Abi Talib (a.s.)
The wives of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.), in-
cluding Umm Salamah, Aisha, Hafsa, Zaynab
bint Khuzaymah, Zaynab bint Jahsh, and Mari-
yah al-Qubtiyyah, buried besides her son Ibra-
him (a.s.), and others
Safiyyah and Atikah bint Abdul-Muttalib,
aunts of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.)
Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyyah, the son of
Ameer-ul-Momineen (a.s.)

Many Companions were buried in Jannatul-Baqee’ as
well, such as: Abu Sa’eed al-Khudri, Sa’d ibn Mu’adh
al-Ansari, Uthman ibn Affan, Abdul-Rahman ibn
Awf, Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas, Khunays ibn Hudhafah,
Abdullah ibn Mas’ood, Jabir ibn Abdullah al-Ansari,
and Miqdad ibn Amr, and many more.
Apart from this there were thousands martyred in the
Battle of Harrah in which Yazeed, after having com-
mitting the atrocity of Karbala against the family of
the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.), turned his attention to
Madinah, and killed and pillaged there. Amongst the
martyrs were hundreds of Companions of the Holy
Prophet (s.a.w.s.).
Early Account of Jannatul-Baqee’
One of the detailed accounts of the state of Jannatul-
Baqee’ is that of Ibn Jubayr al-Andalusi the famous
traveller of the sixth century AH. In his travels he
wrote the following about al-Baqee’:
‚Al-Baqee’ al-Gharqad is to the East of Madinah, and one
emerges to it from a door known as Baab-ul-Baqee’, and the
first grave you will find on your left when you emerge into
al-Baqee’ from the mentioned door is the grave of Safiyyah
the aunt of the Prophet (s.a.w.s.), the mother of Zubair ibn
al-Awam (r.a.), and in front of this grave is the grave of
Malik ibn Anas the Madani Imam (r.a.) and upon it is a
small dome of modest construction. And in front of it is the
grave of the pure offspring, Ibrahim the son of the Prophet
(s.a.w.s.), and upon it is a white dome. To the right of it is
the grave of the son of Umar ibn al-Khattab (r.a.), whose
name was Abdur-Rahman al-Awsat, and he is well-known
as Abu Shahma, and he is the one whose father whipped
him as punishment and he then fell ill and died. Next to it
is the grave of Aqeel ibn Abi Talib (r.a.) and Abdullah ibn
Ja’far al-Tayyar (r.a.), and next to them is a shrine housing
the graves of the wives of the Prophet (s.a.w.s.). Besides
that is the shrine containing the three offspring of the
Prophet (s.a.w.s.). Next to it is the shrine of Abbas ibn Ab-
dul-Muttallib and Hasan ibn Ali (r.a.), and their graves
are raised from the earth and wide, covered with panels
stuck on them with creativity, inlaid with yellow sheets,
studded with star-shaped nails in a most innovative way, a
most beautiful view. In the same manner is the grave of
Ibrahim the son of the Prophet (s.a.w.s.). Following this
dome of Abbas is a room attributed to Fatimah the daughter
of the Messenger (s.a.w.s.), known as Bait-ul-Huzn. It is
said that it is where she used to frequent to mourn for her
father al-Mustafa (s.a.w.s.). To the end of al-Baqee’ is the
grave of the martyred and oppressed Uthman Dhil-
Noorayn (r.a.), and upon his grave is a small dome of sim-
ple contruction. Close t it is the grave of Fatimah bint
Asad, the mother of Ali (r.a.). The graves of this al-Baqee’
are too many to count, because it was the cemetery of most
of the Muhajir and Ansar Companions (r.a.).‛ (Al-Rihlah,

Its Violation and Destruction
8th Shawwal 1345 AH—21st April 1925—marked a
bleak and sad day in the pages of Muslim history.
Muhammad ibn Abdil-Wahhab, aligning himself
with the Banu Sa’ud clan of Najd, Arabia, formed a
new despotic power in 1744—the First Saudi State—
and with the teachings of Ibn Taymiyyah founded the
new Salafist ‘Wahhabi’ movement, which was to be-
come the greatest source and sponsor of terrorism
around the world. The Taliban, Al-Qaeda, Da’ish

(ISIS), all hail from that very ideology propagated by
Ibn Abdil-Wahhab and the Sa’udi clan.
Amongst their beliefs was that the building of shrines
and mausoleums upon the grave of any person, how-
ever great, was an act of kufr and thus prohibited,
and that such constructions must be demolished. The
pilgrimage towards such shrines was shirk
(polytheism) according to them.
In the beginning of the 19th century, the Banu Sa’ud
entered Makkah and Madinah, causing destruction
and bloodshed of the Muslim inhabitants. This
marked the first destruction of the holy sites of the
two most Holiest of cities, including the ancient Mus-
lims cemetery of Jannatul-Baqee’.
The Banu Sa’ud were subsequently ousted from Hijaz
by the Ottomans who took on the task of rebuilding
and renovating Makkah and Madinah to its former
glory—rather, they improved upon it in such a way
that Madinah was described as a city akin to Istanbul
in its beauty and splendour.
However, the bloodthirsty hounds of the Sa’ud clan
led another military advance into Hijaz in 1924 and
conquered the region, mercilessly plundering and
killing.
In 1925, when they had established their kingdom,
the Banu Sa’ud began destroying all Muslim heritage,
only leaving the shrine of the Holy Prophet of Islam
Muhammad al-Mustafa (s.a.w.s.), due to immense
pressure from the Muslims.
The tomb of Hamza (a.s.) and the martyrs of the
Battle of Uhud was destroyed, as well as the ancient
cemetery of Makkah, Jannatul-Mu’alla, in which the
Prophet’s (s.a.w.s.) first wife Sayyidah Khadijah (a.s.),
his mother Sayyidah Aminah (a.s.), his uncle and pro-
tector Abu Talib (a.s.) and his grandfather Abdul-
Muttalib, as well as many others from this ancestors
and companions and followers are buried.They de-
stroyed the Banu Hashim colony of Madinah, the
birth-house of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) in Makkah,
the grave of the father of the Prophet (s.a.w.s.) in
Madinah.
Most notable was their destruction of the shrines and
mausoleums of Jannatul-Baqee’, reducing the graves
of great personalities to heaps of rubble. They un-
leashed their hatred towards the remnants of Islam
and early Muslims in a way no real Muslim can com-
prehend.
All of these constructions and shrines were our signs
of respect towards the great leaders of Islam, especial-
ly the Infallible Imams (a.s.), and they were our con-
nection to a time long gone, the days of the Prophet
(s.a.w.s.). While humanity respects its heritage of past
generations, the despotic evil Wahhabis have an aver-
sion and hatred towards it.
This is recent history in which the so-called Muslims
of the Wahhabi sect suddenly thought that shrines
erected for holy and respected personalities was a
crime against monotheism. On the other hand, after
hundreds of years of the vanguards of Islamic scienc-
es, the scholars of all schools of Islam somehow did
not know this, least of all the Companions who first
built the shrine housing the Holy Prophet’s (s.a.w.s.)
grave.
Their destruction of these sites is the reminiscent of
aforementioned pillaging and attack on Makkah and
Madinah by Yazeed in 63 AH. Just as history now
recalls Yazeed as an enemy of Islamic teachings, we
pray to Allah (s.w.t.) to enable the destruction and
anniliation of the Sa’udi rulership and the rebuilding
of the shrines of our Imams (a.s.) and the other great
personalities of Islam, and may this hated and hateful
House of Sa’ud suffer the same as Yazeed in this
world and the Hereafter.

To establish a good society, it is very im-
portant to respect others. A believer must be
respectful of other believers, and must not
cause any harm to come to another.
Allah (s.w.t.) has said in the Holy Quran:
والذين ي ؤذون المؤمنين والمؤمنات بغير ما اكتسبوا ف قد احتملوا ب هتانا وإثما مبينا
And those who malign believing men and believing women
undeservedly, they bear the guilt of slander and a manifest
sin. (Al-Ahzab 33:58)
To speak against a believer and to hurt him, verbally
or physically, is amongst the greatest sins.
Once Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq (a.s.) was going towards
the Holy Ka’bah, and some of his companions were
with him, and he said to them: ‚Are you looking at
the Ka’bah? Do you know how great this is in the
eyes of Allah (s.w.t.)?‛ They said: ‚Yes, we know.‛
The Imam (a.s.) said: ‚The respect of a believer is sev-
enty times more than the Ka’bah.‛
Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq (a.s.) also said: ‚Whoever be-
littles a believer, whether he is poor or not, Allah
(s.w.t.) will continue to belittle him and detest him
until he repents from belittling that person.‛
The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) said: ‚Whoever hurts a
believer, then he has surely hurt me, and whoever has
hurt me has annoyed Allah, and whoever annoys Al-
lah then upon him is the curse of Allah (s.w.t.) and
the angels and all people.‛
In a Hadeeth-e-Qudsi, Allah (s.w.t.) has said:
‚Whoever has disgraced my believing slave, then he
has declared open war with me.‛
So, if one seeks to belittle and disgrace and disrespect
another believer, and hurt him in any way, Allah
(s.w.t.) has come to his aid and He will cause the in-
sulter to become belittled and disgraced, and he will
face His open enmity and hostility.

And what greater support can the victimized believer
have?
Allah (s.w.t.) has said in the Quran:
لك بأن الله مولى الذين آمنوا وأن الكافرين ل ذ مولى لهم
That is because Allah is the Protector of those who believe,
but those who reject Allah have no protector.
(Muhammad 47:11)
Allah (s.w.t.) is the Mawla – the protector, guardian,
patron – of the believers, and those who wish to harm
and hurt the believers, whether he claims to be a be-
liever or not, will find that he has made God his ene-
my.
Allah’s (s.w.t.) promise is further elucidated in the
following verse:
نا نصر المؤمنين وكان حقا علي And to help the believers is ever incumbent upon Us.
(Al-Rum 30:47)
In other words, Allah (s.w.t.) has obligated Himself to
help the believers, and He has made this a duty for
Himself in favour of the believers.
Allah (s.w.t.) has exalted the honour of the believers
in the following verse:
ولله العزة ولرسوله وللمؤمنين ولكن المنافقين ل ي علمون
Honour belongs to Allah and His Messenger and to the
believers, but the hypocrites know not.
(Al-Munafiqoon 63:8)
Respect, honour, dignity are traits that are deserved
firstly by Allah, and then the Prophet (s.a.w.s.) and
then the believers, and to mention the believers in
such a way alongside the Prophet (s.aw.s.) and Allah
(s.w.t.) is a clear indicator of the great station the be-
liever holds. Indeed, the believers are the best of the
creation of Allah (s.w.t.) as mentioned in the follow-
ing verse:
ر إن الذين آمنوا وعملوا الصالحات أولئك هم خي البرية
Surely those who believe and do good, they are the best of
creatures. (Al-Bayyinah 98:7)
Allah (s.w.t.) has raised the ranks of believers, regard-
ed them as the best of creation, as those who worthy
of honour alongside the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.). He
has promised and obligated Himself to defend and
support the believers from their opponents. He has
declared warfare against those who belittle and hurt
them.
Quarrels and arguments between believers happen,
but these words of Allah (s.w.t.) must be remembered
and the limits must not be crossed. You may have a
disagreement with another believer, but we must at
the same time hold in our hearts love and respect for
him or her.
This mutual respect between believers is vital for the
community of Muslim believers, as it will create an
environment of respect, love, loyalty and unity, in the
face of many internal and external adversaries and
enemies.
The moment we open our mouths vindictively
against other believers, we are acting as agents of Sa-
tan in causing discord amongst the community, as
well as disparaging those who Allah (s.w.t.) has
vowed to protect and support, and we will be declar-
ing war against Allah (s.w.t.).
Allah (s.w.t.) has promised support to the believers,
and it is therefore upon us as believers also to support
the other believers, whenever they face difficulties
and hardships, whenever they are attacked and per-
secuted.

There are ten Branches of Islam which are the acts of
worship and are obligatory over all Muslims, provid-
ing the conditions are met. They are:
Daily Prayers;
Fasting;
One-Fifth levy (Khums);
Alms tax (Zakaat);
The Hajj Pilgrimage;
Struggle in the way of God (Jihad);
Enjoining Good;
Forbidding Evil;
Association and love for the Prophet PBUH and
his rightful successors (Tawallaa);
Disassociation and dislike of the enemies of the
Prophet PBUH and his rightful successors
(Tabarraa);
Here we will briefly examine an issue which is one of
the most important principles of the act of worship-
ping God: Enjoining Good and Forbidding Evil.
Almighty God in chapter 3 of His Book says:
يدعون إلى الخير ويأمرون بالمعروف ولتكن منكم أمة هون عن وأولئك هم المفلحون المنكر وي ن
Let there arise out of you a band of people inviting to all
that is good, enjoining what is right, and forbidding what
is wrong: They are the ones to attain felicity. (Holy Quran,
3:104)
In order to recognise the importance of this issue, it is
useful to mention the following tradition from the
Commander of The Faithful, Imam Ali PBUH:
في سبيل اهلل عند األمر وما أعماا البر كلها والمهاا بالمعروف والنهي عن المنكر إل كنفثة في بحر لمي
And what are all good deeds and struggle in the way of
God, amidst Enjoining Good and Forbidding Evil, but as a
drop in a deep sea. (Nahj-ol-Balaaqhah, Tradition 374)
So we can see that nothing in the category of "Good
Deeds" including the struggle in the way of God (al-
jihaad fi sabeel-illaah), can be comparable to Enjoining
Good and Forbidding Evil.
Obviously here one must appreciate that any of those
Good Deeds without adherence to the principles of
Enjoining Good and Forbidding Evil in fact lacks the
very essence of Islam.

After all, is Religion, as a set of rules and regulations,
anything but "Do"s and "Don't"s? And how they can
be implemented in the society without the coherent
participation of all members of the society in promot-
ing and encouraging what is Good and discouraging
what is Evil?
All religions have been introduced to humankind
indicating rules and guidelines which couldn't be im-
plemented except by Enjoining Good and Forbidding
Evil. But the story doesn't end here. Even after ac-
cepting the religion and its set of rules, if believers do
not comply with Enjoining Good and Forbidding Evil
and only consider their own obligations towards their
deeds and acts of worship, such as praying and fast-
ing, and not be vigilant towards society's behaviour
in general and be indifferent about it, this would lead
them to become complicit to the sins and accessories
for the sinners.
Islam does not allow such behaviour and apathy to-
wards the sinners, and takes the believer who doesn't
act according to the principle of Enjoining Good and
Forbidding Evil personally responsible and warns
him of a severe punishment.
In this regard, we find the following tradition from
Imam Mohammad al-Baaqir PBUH, from book of al-
Kaafi:
أوحى الله عز و جل إلى شعيب النبي )عليه السالم( أني معذب من ق ومك مائة ألف أربعين ألفا من شرارهم و ستين ألفا من خيارهم ف قاا )عليه السالم( يا رب هؤلء األشرار فما باا األخيار فأوحى الله عز و جل
إليه ااهنوا أهل المعاصي و لم ي غضبوا لغضبي
God Almighty revealed to Prophet Shoayb PBUH: I am
going to punish a hundred thousand of your people, forty
thousands of their sinners, and sixty thousands of their
good ones. So he PBUH said: O' my Lord, those are the sin-
ners, but why the good ones? So God Almighty revealed to
him: They were complicit with the sinners and they did not
show anger upon them for the sake of my anger.
(al-Kaafi, Vol 5, Tradition 1)
Hence, it is an obligation on all believers to show an-
ger towards the sinners because of God Almighty's
anger towards them.
Of course, this is not the way that the Almighty's
providence will apply to every nation at any time.
Otherwise, we would be seeing similar act of direct
punishment happening all over the world. However,
the principles never change and the punishment
awaits those who refrain from acting according to the
above principle.
One of the direct consequences that many people are
suffering as a result of abandoning the ruling of En-
joining Good and Forbidding Evil is that they would
empower the sinners and then that would pave the
way to the sinners to become the rulers and rule over
them unjustly.
As mentioned in the following tradition from The
Messenger of God PBUH in Al-Kaafi:
هوا عن المنكر ولم ي تبعوا إذا لم يأمروا بالمعروف ولم ي ن األخيار من أهل ب يتي سله الله عليهم شرارهم ف يدعوا
خيارهم فال يستماب لهم
Whenever they don't enjoin the Good and don't forbid
Evil, and don’t follow the best ones of my household (i.e.
the Infallible Imams), God would empower their evil ones
over them, so their good ones will supplicate but it will not
be answered for them. (Al-Kaafi, Vol 2)
Here, those people, who would call out for help and
pray but their prayers and supplications will not be
answered, are referred to as ‚their good ones‛. It
must be understood that the title of ‚good ones‛ has
been used in a general term rather as absolute good-
ness, as these people, although they may be persistent
in fulfilling their duties of daily prayers, fasting, Hajj,
taxations, even struggling in the way of God, but they
were negligent towards their most important obliga-
tions which were Enjoining Good and Forbidding
Evil.
We pray God Almighty would grant us all more op-
portunity to serve Him by understanding His religion
and implementing it.

Toward the end of his life, Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq
(a.s.) was subjected to severe restrictions placed
upon him by the Abbasid caliph Mansur, who or-
dered such torture and merciless killing of many
of the descendants of the Prophet who were Shi'ite
that his actions even surpassed the cruelty and
heedlessness of the Umayyads. At his order they
were arrested in groups, some thrown into deep
and dark prisons and tortured until they died,
while others were beheaded or buried alive or
placed at the base of or between walls of build-
ings, and walls were constructed over them.
Hisham, the Umayyad caliph, had ordered the
sixth Imam to be arrested and brought to Damas-
cus. Later, the Imam(a.s.) was arrested by Saffah,
the Abbasid caliph, and brought to Iraq. Finally,
Mansur had him arrested again and brought to
Samarra where he had the Imam (a.s.) kept under
supervision.
Eventually the Imam (a.s.) was allowed to return
to Medina where he spent the rest of his life under
house-arrest, until he was poisoned and martyred
at the behest of Mansur on 25th Shawwal in the
year 148 AH.
He was buried in the Cemetry of al-Baqee’, besides
his father and grandfather (a.s.).
As we grieve on the anniversary of his departure,
may Allah (s.w.t.) convey our Salaams to our mas-
ter Imam Ja’far ibn Muhammad al-Sadiq, and may
he make us amongst his true followers and that of
all the Imams (a.s.).

Q: On the package of meat that is produced in
Muslim countries by non-Muslim companies, it
says, ‚slaughtered according to Islamic laws‛. Are
we allowed to eat that meat? Can we eat that meat,
if it comes from Muslim companies in non-Muslim
countries? And what is the ruling, if the source is
non-Muslim company from a non-Muslim coun-
try?
A: The writing *on the package+ has no value at all.
If the producer is a Muslim or it was produced in a
place where Muslims are in the majority and it is
not known that the producer is a non-Muslim, then
it is permissible to eat it.
But if the producer is a non-Muslim or it was pro-
duced in a place where Muslims are not in the ma-
jority and it is not known that the producer is Mus-
lim, then it is not permissible to eat it.
Q: Alcohol is used in the production of many
drugs and medications: Is it permissible to take
them? Are they considered tahir?
A: They are tahir; and since the alcohol used in
them is so minute that it dissolves in them, it is
therefore permissible to take them also.
Q: Is it permissible to eat lobster, crayfish, and
snails?
A: Is it not permissible to eat from marine animals
anything except fish that has scale; shrimp is con-
sidered from that category *of permissible sea ani-
mals+. But other than fish, like lobster, and similar-
ly the fish that does not have scale is forbidden.
Q: Is it permissible to buy a fish from a Muslim
who is not a Shi‘a while we have no knowledge
whether it is from the category of scale fish or not?
A: It is permissible to buy it but one cannot eat it
unless he makes sure that it is from the category of
scale fish.
Q: A Muslim enters a café and sits down at a table
to drink tea, then a stranger comes at the same ta-
ble to drink wine. Is it obligatory upon the Muslim
to stop drinking tea and leave?
A: Yes, it is obligatory to move away from that ta-
ble.
Q: Is it permissible for a Muslim to attend a gather-
ing where intoxicant drinks are being served?
A: Eating and drinking in those gatherings is for-
bidden. However, the prohibition in attending such
gatherings is based on compulsory precaution. But
there is no problem in attending such gatherings
for the purpose of forbidding the evil (nahi ‘anil
munkar), if one is capable of doing that.
Q: Some of the cheese manufactured in non-
Muslim countries contain rennet extracted from the
calf or other animals. We do not know whether the
rennet was taken from the animal that was slaugh-
tered according to Islamic laws; neither do we
know that it has transformed into something else.
So is it permissible to eat such cheese?
A: There is no problem in eating such cheese.
