"Blessed are the Peacemakers for they shall be called the Children of GOD”
Y’s Men International
Sri Lanka Region Year 2012—2013 No.1 - July—September
Theme: “You are the light of the world”
Slogan: “Share your blessings in love”
From your editors desk
Devote time to the lesser fortunate. Clubs and volunteer organisations who pledge themselves to community service in a very
laudable way are blessed. Clubs were formed as far back as a century ago in the United
Kingdom and the USA at a time when the social conscience of people was being aroused.
Some were drawn from religious groups but most clubs engaging in social work were not
necessarily from religious denominations. But all religions promote their adherents to as-sist the downtrodden, to help those in need and endeavour to live up to ideals of justice,
compassion and kindness to all those they come into contact with. They insist their aim
and all their projects are to do with making a better life for the lesser fortunate persons.
Our projects are focussed on the improvement of the quality of life. We have only to look
around Colombo City to see how side by side with affluence is a stark and unrelieved pov-erty. Telling the poor and deprived to pull themselves up by their bootstraps is rather far-
fetched, they do not have the bootstraps. Community services organisations like the
YMCA, YWCA, Y’s Men International Club to mention just a few; provide the boot-
straps, the essential aids to reach out for community improvement.
Another admirable factor is the camaraderie among the members, a strong rapport, the quiet satisfaction that comes when one is helping another to stand on his or her feet. It is
important to give, it is as important to know how to graciously receive. Remember how
our parents and teachers always told us to say “thank you” when we were given a gift?
Life is usually a hard road to tread. Everyone has their own problems and trials. Not al-
ways was it easy to overcome. But to be a part of a group, a club that is open to the diffi-
culties of the community of one another as well makes the road easier to journey on. In
several ways it reduces our burdens for we are making the loads of others lighter. Take
life in a filthy slum. The slum dwellers were constantly fighting. They were apparently
flogging drugs and manufacturing and selling the local cheap alcoholic brew named Kas-
sipu. It took a couple of members of a well known service club to pay that horrific slum a
visit. They did not go and preach to them. They invited the children to come to the play-
ground in the vicinity which the club had set up. Soon the children were on the swings and
sliding down the mat slides, seesawing and playing ball games. By and by the parental
squabbles ceased. They volunteered to look after the children at play. The members of the
service club organized an Avurudhu party, then a X’mas party for all the children, treating
them to food and soft drinks. It did not take long for the spirit of amity to grow and spread
to other such slum communities in the area. The group of members of that club that had
dared to venture into very difficult terrain moved on. There are so many places that need
such help. Money is not the real answer. A little of it is needed of course But remember
the poorest need assistance. Service clubs can do so much for the less fortunate. To devote
ones time.... precious time is the need of the hour.( concluded)

ANNUAL REGIONAL CONVENTION
The annual Regional Convention was successfully held at the Ranmal Holiday Resort in
Gorakana, Moratuwa on the 23rd of June 2012. Asia Area President 2012/2013 Wichian
Boonmapajorn graced the occasion as Chief Guest. Preacher Brother Lalith Perera was
the Guest Speaker. Y’s Man Rienzie Diaz of the Dehiwala Club was installed as the Re-
gional Director 2012/2013 and Y’s Man Anton Kandiah of the Dehiwala Club was in-
stalled as Regional Director Elect for the same period. (Please see pictures on p16)
Key note speaker Brother Lalith Perera has been the Director of the Community of the Risen Lord for the last 20 years. He is wholeheartedly involved in the renewal of the Roman Catholic Faith. He works one hundred percent with the Roman Catholic Church. He is an excellent preacher who preaches in Los Angeles, Canada, UK, Australia, Singa-pore and in Sri Lanka. In Sri Lanka he is famous for preaching at St. Peter’s College hall, Bambalapitiya, on Wednesdays. This session is attended by over 2000 people At Mabole, Wattala the crowd is around 5000 devotees. Negombo and Wennappuwa are other areas where he preaches and huge crowds gather to listen to his lectures on Christ. Brother Lalith Perera is an old boy of St. Anthony’s College Kandy. He was a boarder under the priests of the OSB Order. St. Anthony’s College is the oldest Roman Catholic School in Sri Lanka, founded in 1854. When Brother Lalith was studying there, it was a great private college. In his address Brother Lalith Perera said that we talk about the past, present and the future. In the past, the world was dominated by Europe which was basically a Christian area where the principal government and even the colonies were Christian. The sys-tems were Christian and it was natural to have these principles in our day to day lives. The Christian Ethic was the base of society for hundreds of years. It was on this ethic that even the legal system was built. All this has changed and a lot of people do not know that. People may still mouth mo-rality but the old rules no longer apply. People espouse religion but in actual fact greed rules even the highest in society. You only have to appear to be honest; you do not have to be honest. Only appearance matters. In Europe it is even more deadly. Christi-
anity is left behind for the rights of the individual. That is the base of society in those countries. The right of the individual to do what he wants. Parents have no rights be-cause children have rights over parents. Parents are punished for chastising children. The responsibility of children has shifted to the state. Nowadays parents are irresponsi-ble. There is no commitment even at 50 years of age. It is a degeneration of society. We are living in a selfish, charged up society. That is why we do not see young people any more in a committed place. When you go to a church in England there might be just two people in the Mass. Even in Italy few people come to Mass. Will religion die, will spiri-tuality die, do we have another way? Time to think about it. If you look at the early Church, Christianity came to life in the Roman Empire. It ex-isted in spite of great opposition by the Jews. They were persecuted but they grew. They had nothing to offer but the payment of their life. We should really think about it. Continued. on p 5

Some Impressions on the Y’s Men’s Club Of Mahanuwara.
It may be about eight years since I joined this club. I am indebted to my good
friend YM Keerthi Bharet i fo r introducing me to the fellowship of this club. I
have enjoyed this period of my life very much indeed.
Readers need to be reminded of the fact that this present club is a
continuation of what used to be called The Y’s Mens’ Club of Kandy which was a
very active club in the 1960 s and 1970 s. After a period of dormancy the club has
been revived and continues to play an active role in service oriented community
projects. At this stage a story about my self would not be out of place. During the
above mentioned period, I was a teacher at Kingswood College. One of my fellow
staff members, the late Mr Nadesapillai invited me to join the club adding that our
Principal, the late Mr. Kenneth M de Lanerolle was also a member. As the ex-
change was purely verbal and since my friend gave no further details I assumed
that it was a “ Wise Mens’ Club” and took no action to join then. In retrospect I
feel that I have missed quite a bit of activity that I could have been involved in, in
the physical sense. I suppose it is a case of “ better late than never” Brother Lalith
Perera the Keynote Speaker at our last Regional conference felt that the average
age of those present would be 59plus. I am now in the age group that would push
this up rather than down, still I am quite proud to be a member o f this very active
club.
Our oldest member, Dr Herbert A Aponso is probably the most
active and sets a high standard for us “younger’ members to emulate. Regular
Medical clin ics at the village of Moragolla is our main pro ject at the moment. We
have also started a similar project at Galagederawatte and hope to get the Kurune-
gala club to jo in in it. Whatever our activit ies are, there is whole hearted co opera-
tion from all members in different ways.
Revert ing to the subject of the age of members, I am happy to note
that several new members well below the quoted average of 59+ have jo ined us
during the past two years. I do hope that this favourable trend will continue, not
only in our club but in the other clubs of the region as well.
While I am enjoying my association with my fellow club members,
making me feel “years younger”, I must hasten to add that I have also enjoyed the
contacts that I have been able to make attending various functions at District and
Rgional levels. I do appreciate that I have been able to make many friends
through being associated with Ys dom. Maybe the Region should add a trophy for
the “most Fined” person at Regional conferences in which case I am sure to win
the award! Shall end here. Contributed by Rupert Navamani

Continud from p 3
The National Geographic Magazine of March 2012 carries an article on the 12 Apostles of Jesus Christ. Who were these men, why did they succeed, when every sign was to show that they would fail? At the death of Jesus, their organization was already fail-ing. When they took out Jesus Christ, one denied him and the other ten ran away. They should have failed. They would have failed, but they did not because Jesus Christ came back from the dead. It is not a philosophy or a religion, it is a person. Jesus Christ alive and back from the dead. Christians do not know. They know about Him, they do not know Him. When he came back he gave them the gift of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit started living inside these 12. They went crazy. The fisherman stands up and preaches and 3000 people are converted. He did not know how to speak. He speaks a second time and 2000 are converted. They travel to the ends of the earth and establish a faith that has lasted two thousand years. We are called to go back to the core of our faith, the Person of Jesus Christ; the power is the power of the Holy Spirit. Encounter with Jesus Christ and the gift of His Spirit, every obstacle will be overcome. Not just overcome, it will be crushed. We need to rediscover the source. We have been called from all over to bring this experience back into the heart of peo-ple. The speaker said that when he left school he left his faith behind. Evolution looked more logical than creation; he became attracted to the wrong way of life. In that kind of situation he began to realize, by the grace of God the error of his ways. He had an encounter with the Risen Lord. The Holy Spirit came into his life. Every adult should come to such a moment in his or her life. He spoke of the early Church. The apostles met secretly after the death of Jesus be-cause they were too afraid to come out in public. Things changed when Jesus Christ came back from the dead and the Holy Spirit took over the apostles. They were no longer afraid. They took on the whole Roman Empire and Rome became Christian. We are called to rediscover this original experience. We have to go back to the source and rediscover what made us Christian. (Concluded)

A tribute to the Services of the YMCA
If one turns through the pages of history, one
always finds that it is at a time when society is
heavy laden with almost unbearable burdens
that a bright light suddenly shines to dispel the
darkness. It was at such a time that a few young
persons, in London, nineteen year old George
Williams with twelve of his friends were in-
spired to form the Young Men’s Christian Asso-
ciation (YMCA) on 6th June 1844.
Founded on Christian values, their aim was to
lead the youth to achieve a decent and moral life
amidst the deteriorating moral, social and eco-
nomic environments in which they moved.
It was in this back-drop that on 6th June, 1844
that Williams and his small group established
the YMCA to help young men, demoralized by
poverty, crime, and vio lence to reach out to a
decent lifestyle and moral up liftment. The movement gripped young men and
soon spread throughout the world. The YMCA became the first international
organization. There is now a network of 14, 000 YMCA’s with 45 Million
Members in 124 countries. In Sri Lanka, the YMCA was established on the 24 th
of June 1882 in Colombo. Soon there were YMCA’s in Kandy, Jaffna, etc.
The importance of Sports was part of the YMCA deal and such community
games as Volleyball, Basketball, Table Tennis, Badminton, Athletics and Physi-
cal Culture were introduced and keenly propagated among the clubs and intro-
duced to schools. The first Athletics Meet in Sri Lankan was conducted by the
YMCA. Radio Ceylon (the present SLBC) aired its first broadcast from the Co-
lombo YMCA.
Many reputed politicians like Mr. S.W.R.D. Bandaranayake, Dr. E.G. Ponnam-
balam, Mr. Colvin R. De Silva and Mr. Ananda Tissa de Alwis had all been
keen and active members of the YMCA in their heyday. One of the greatest men
in Asia, Mahatma Gandhi of India addressed the YMCA during his visit here in
1927. Though not a Christian, he told his audience, he had been inspired by the
Sermon on the Mount preached by Jesus during the years of His public life. The
Island’s first Governor General, Sir Oliver Goonetilleke, was the president of
the YMCA in 1935. The YMCA has indeed hosted a long line of distinguished
orators, scholars and states-men.
This year The National Council of the YMCA's in Sri Lanka celebrated
Fifty Years in existence. The Council was founded initially by the 14 YMCA's
already situated in Ceylon in 1962; as per an Act of Parliament. There are
presently 38 YMCA's in Sri Lanka with approximately 15,000 members and
thousands of people who frequent these institutions country wide.

Continued —— Having had no Head Office earlier, the Head Office Of the
National Council Of The YMCA's of Sri Lanka operated from the
YMCA, Fort. However, on 1st September 1979, it moved its Head Office to St.
Michael s Road, Colpetty.
Peace and Reconciliation was its positive response during the National Conflict
and continues to be a priority concern of the YMCA. The welfare of children in
difficult circumstances of poverty and want, relief for flood victims, v ictims of the
Tsunami and other disasters have always seen the YMCA’s move in quickly to
give relief and rehabilitation to victims.
The 50th year celebrat ions has as its theme, “Taking the Youth to the Top” in ful-
filling their aspirations and reaching their full potential to make a good life for
themselves and the whole country. In conclusion, let’s recru it more young men
into the YMCA; for that’s where the future is. May God Bless the YMCA’s of
Sri Lanka. (concluded) By Lt. Col. (retd. ) Shane Balthazaar
Note: George Williams was knighted by Queen Victoria in 1894 for his YMCA
work and buried in 1905 under the floor of St. Paul’s Cathedral among that na-
tion’s heroes and statesmen.
