Event Brief Description

Over 50 performers from 6 countries that Zheng He called on will be in Singapore to join in the Zheng He 600th Anniversary Celebrations. These ports of call will be anchored at the Zheng He Festive Village over a 10-day period to showcase Zheng He’s legacy in their countries – handicraft, cuisine and culture. The two biggest participating contingents come from China and Indonesia, each consisting more than 30 persons each including performers, exhibitors, trade partners and tourism officials.

Highlights include: National pavilions from 6 overseas countries (China, India,

Indonesia, Malaysia, Kenya and Iran) plus Singapore Pavilions will showcase the cultural distinction of each country

as well as their link to Zheng He, and also feature local produce such as silk produce from China, local food and wooden carvings from Kenya and exhibits from Indonesia.

Daily evening performances by artists from all countries at the stage

Special F&B area featuring the cuisine from all countries.

China Pavilion

Nanjing

Showcasing the Ming Dynasty imperial robe (measuring 2.5 (L) X 1.2 (H) X 0.3 (W) m).

Performers (南京“云锦秀”演员) will model a selection of traditional and modern silk outfits.

Classical and folk Indian dances including Kathakali, performed by Temple of Fine Arts (TFA) - a reputed voluntary non-profit organisation established in 1982.

Indonesia Pavilion

Contribution of Zheng He in the inter-racial life – religion, culture, food, handicraft and other areas of Indonesia.

Emphasis will be on Semarang, Central Java at the Sam Po Long Temple. Zheng He costume will be showcased.

Batik craftsmen will be at the pavilion to showcase the fine-art of Batik painting. A large collection of handicraft and Indonesian snacks will also be available for sale.

4 traditional musicians and 2 dancers will demonstrate traditional performing arts.

Malaysia Pavilion

Photo display of Zheng He related artifacts and history.

Delegation includes 6 performers who will perform traditional dances.

Iran Pavilion Exhibitors will showcase Iran’s culture and 5 musicians will perform traditional Iranian music.

Kenya Pavilion

Sale and display of handicrafts, jewellery and textiles among other things.

1421 Exhibition – The Year China Sailed The World

Event Brief Description

The 1421 Exhibition is based on the British author Gavin Menzies’s bestseller book “1421: The Year China Discovered the World” as well as his new discoveries made after publication of the book.

The first of its kind in the world, the 1421 Exhibition is unique and will bring alive the life and times of Zheng He, and feature new information and evidences in the form of artefacts, maps and displays, that indicated that Zheng He discovered America nearly a century ahead of the Europeans.

It will pose the 1421 controversy on an entertaining, yet serious and intellectually challenging platform, so that visitors can come to their own conclusion whether they believe in the 1421 theories.

The Imperial Pavilion, housing the exhibition, is styled in a similar way to an imperial encampments depicted in Ming Dynasty paintings and illustrations. The entry foyer has been styled to welcome visitors to the pavilion and provide background to the historical significance of this period of China’s colourful history.

Gallery Description

Zone 1 - Legends & Discovery

This introduction area features the Great Maritime Explorers of the World. It is a compelling series of graphics & feature displays that positions Admiral Zheng He amongst these sea legends.

Visitors can opt to visit the puppet theatre which gives an

introduction of the Zheng He story.

This zone also features the café where Gavin Menzies made his astounding discoveries. A video will be screened to explain the premise of his reasoning and discoveries, to set the platform for visitors to view the galleries ahead.

At the end of this zone, visitors will be asked to take a poll on whether they believe Europeans or Zheng He are the first to reach America.

Zone 2 - Admiral Zheng He’s Day of Youth

This narrative theatre takes the visitor back in time to Zheng He’s childhood and is the start of his epic life story. A soundscape with special theatrical lighting recreate the abduction of Zheng He by the Imperial Guards.

The internal turmoil in the Imperial Court leading up to Zhu Di becoming Emperor is revealed as the audience negotiate an ancient lattice maze and finally reach the Imperial Grand Hall. Specially commissioned life size figurines of the Emperor and

Zheng He recreate the investiture of Zheng He as a Grand Eunuch.

Zone 4A - The Start of the World’s Greatest Adventure

In his private chambers Zheng He, contemplates the immense task ahead – to build a massive fleet and sail to all corners of the world. Display features include replicas of ancient maps charted by past Chinese dynasties and a view over the Dragon Bay shipyards of Nanjing. From these chambers visitors can view the large screen video depicting the construction and deployment of the massive fleet from Nanjing.

Zone 4B – The First Five Voyages

The first 5 Voyages are marked by 5 giant masts & sails. Each sail depicts the destination and highlights of each voyage, as well as special exhibits that allow visitors insights into life for the crews of the fleet….

Zone 4B – The Exchange of Knowledge

Meeting and Trading with the Europeans – This full scale re-enactment scene illustrates the extent of trade that was conducted by the Chinese. Zheng He’s admirals are reputed to have met with European traders and travelers many times in the middle eastern ports of the Persian Gulf as well as in the Mediterranean Sea.

Zone 5 – 1421, the Lost Voyage

This is the heart of 1421 where a massive St Elmo ’s fire installation will ‘narrate’ the story of 1421, binding together all elements and evidence that is creating international controversies as well as challenging historical doctrines. The central ‘stage’ is a replica of the Bao Chuan deck and one of its main sails, whereas the surrounding displays and features provide a compelling account of the Zheng He’s 6th Voyage based on the 1421 theories.

Zone 6 – Final Voyage

The aftermath of Zheng He’s 6th

Voyage is dramatized in this compelling area. Betrayal by the influential Mandarin advisors to the Emperor, the destruction of the voyage’s logs, records and maps, the foreboding omens confronting the Emperor are part of this intriguing area that culminates in the legacy of Zheng He’s epic voyages.

Zone 7 – The Continuing Research & Developments

A highly exciting section of the pavilion, these are where ancient maps, natural disasters and newly found archeological sites discovered by independent historians, researchers & archeologists that support the theory that the Chinese had sailed the world well before the Europeans.

After this section, visitors will be asked to take a poll on whether they are now of the view that Zheng He or the Europeans are the first to discover the Americas, after viewing all the galleries and evidences.

After the poll, visitors will pass through the F&B and merchandising section before reaching the exit of the exhibition. The entrance of the Festive Village would be linked to this exit to encourage visitors to partake in the festivities.

It begins when Chris discovers the mysterious giant footprint… Inspired by the seven epic voyages of Zheng He, The Admiral’s Odyssey – A New Musical tells a magical and heartwarming story of Chris, a boy who believes he’s discovered the giant footprint of Zheng He. His mother and his brother think Chris’ imagination is just too fertile. Chris thinks he’s been blessed with a special gift. Magically, he finds himself able to connect with the spirit of one of the world’s greatest explorers. There begins an unlikely six-decade-long friendship between two men from two different places and time…

Event Brief Description

The exhibition will cover the maritime trade from the Tang Dynasty to mark the beginning of the Maritime Silk Road Development, its peak during the Ming Dynasty and up to the beginning of the Republic.

It will focus on trade, culture, foreign relations, maritime technology and its influence brought about by the impact of the voyages between the trading countries of Maritime Asia. The early history of Singapore and the importance of Singapore as an entrepot will be emphasized in relation to its international maritime standing today.

The exhibition will be showcased in a 600-sqm area on level 10 of the new National Library Building. Exhibits will include:

Ancient and valuable publications Maps, charts (new and old) and stone inscriptions Photographs and videos of historical sites Articles and literature written in commemoration of

Zheng He Related ship models, bust, calligraphies, paintings, art

pieces, navigational instruments and tools

The Friends of Admiral Zheng He Society from Singapore will create a model of Zheng He’s “Baochuan” or treasure ship, and conduct research on the mystery of the Baochuan. When completed, the model will be exhibited at the forum of the new building to attract visitors to the level 10

exhibition.

In addition a fleet of Zheng He's 9 different types of ship models would be brought in from the Quanzhou Museum of the History of Maritime Intercourse.

The exhibition will utilize a variety of innovative technologies to provide an interactive and enhanced experience to the visitor. A reading room housing selected reading titles, both physical and digital, is provided for visitors to browse or do research.

The exhibition targets the general public, but the organized talks, lectures and publications may appeal more to the scholars and Zheng He's enthusiasts. To make the exhibition more meaningful and interactive, guided tours and general programmes for public and schools will be conducted with activities, e.g. quiz and competition.

A coffee-table book cum exhibition catalogue of key artefacts and images from the exhibition would be produced. In addition, souvenirs, exhibition guides and other by-products will be produced to generate interests and further promote the exhibition.

The exhibition would also be digitally captured to create a virtual gallery for the international audience and also for archival purposes.

Recreation of LongYaMen

Description Admiral Zheng He sailed past Singapore during his voyages, and was purported to have used a rock structure located close to Labrador Park, as a navigational marker. The rock structure known as the Longyamen or Dragon Teeth Gate was however destroyed in the 1880s by the British Navy to widen the channel to the Keppel Straits.

This historical landmark will be "recreated" at the Labrador Park, complete with interesting storyboards, to showcase Singapore's maritime history and the significance of this rock structure.

Description These coins are designed by Mr Chung Chee Kit, Director of Friends of Admiral Zheng He in Singapore.

The Imperial Treasure Junk of Zheng He (Silver)–20gm 999 Fine Silver Proof Coin features the elaborate image of Admiral Zheng He’s Treasure Junks, considered the grandest vessels the world had seen. Admiral Zheng He’s flagship “treasure ship” was a nine-masted vessel, four hundred feet long. This was nearly 1.5 times the length of a football fields, dwarfing Columbus’ Santa Maria (85 feet) more than 6-fold. The coin also features a four Chinese auspicious phrase which signifies “success in all endeavours” in a four-image Special Latent Effect.

The Treasure Junk is also featured on a 1/25oz 999.9 Fine Gold BU coin.

The Legendary Voyages of Zheng He–20gm 999 Fine Silver Proof Coin features the portrait of the valiant Admiral Zheng He in a vibrant colour application with an ancient Chinese map showing the sea routes which his 28,000-men strong grand armada took. The map is featured in the background which shows Ancient Cambodia, the Chen La Kingdom and Vung Tau (Vietnam) possible areas visited by Admiral Zheng and his men.

These meaningful coins are issued by the National Bank of Cambodia. On the obverse of each coin is the design featuring the bust of King Jayayarman VII who reigned in ancient Cambodia from 1162 to 1201. The denomination reflected on the obverse of the coins is 3,000 Riels. The Silver coins bear the year-date “1405” and “2005” on the obverse in a special latent design.

The latest commemorative Zheng He coin is a Longyamen gold-plated medallion to be launched mid-June 2005.

Tour itinerary Hotel pickup for a 1-hour leisurely sea cruise with welcome drink served onboard. As we set sail to retrace Admiral Zheng He’s expedition, the Treasure fleet would have sailed past Singapore and using the Longyamen, or Dragon Teeth Gate, (widely believed to be a rock structure located close to Labrador Park used by Zheng He) as a marker during the voyage. The rock structure was however destroyed in the 1880s by the British Navy to widen the channel to the Keppel Straits.

After the cruise, proceed to Eu Yan Sang Bird’s Nest Gallery, a veritable treasure trove of information on the history of birds’ nest as a delicacy and health supplement, the harvesting process and the efforts at conservation. Learn about how birds’ nest is related to the voyages of Zheng He.

Final stop is the Zheng He 1421 Exhibition at the Marina Promenade, the world’s first-ever exhibition showcase based on Gavin Menzies’ book – that Admiral Zheng He circled the globe before the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan, and reached America 70 years before Christopher Columbus.

From 30 June to 10 July, you can also visit the Zheng He Festive Village, and discover the various ports-of-call through the eyes of Zheng He. Enjoy daily cultural performances from participating countries (China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Iran, Kenya as well as Singapore), visit beautifully designed country pavilions to learn about their heritage and link to Zheng He, and enjoy the cuisine of these countries as well.
