ST. JOHNS UNIVERSITY MOU HIGHLIGHTS“Red Goes Green”

Red has been the flagship color of St. John’s University. The school added a touch of green through an agreement with EPA to reduce its environmental impacts by adopting sustainable practices and joining

EPA partnership programs.

Goals established for St. John’s under the agreement include:

* Reducing the energy consumed by the school’s buildings and plants by at least 10 percent and creating a university energy plan, through membership in EPA’s EnergyStar program.

* Adopting water conservation and material re-use strategies guided by EPA’s GreenScapes program.

* Conducting an energy audit of the laboratory and reducing its energy needs through EPA’s Labs 21 program.

* Continuing to incorporate strategies and tools to reduce waste and increase recycling under EPA’s WasteWise program.

* Increasing the amount of coal combustion construction materials, which requires less energy to produce than traditionalconcrete, to 50 percent at several campus projects through EPA’s Coal Combustion Products Partnership.

* Developing a plan for a combined heat and power generation plant, which will reduce greenhouse gas emissions using natural gas, biomass and biogas and join EPA’s Combined Heat and Power Partnership.

* Purchasing 10 hybrid campus vehicles, continuing to only use low-sulfur diesel shuttle buses, maintaining campus idling policy and reducing emissions from construction vehicles through EPA’s Clean Construction USA program.

* Enhancing the monitoring of water usage, developing recommendations to it, installing waterless urinals at select locations, and consulting with EPA’s WaterSense program for other water-saving measures.

* Considering the development of a university food waste composting program and the use of alternative energy.

St. John’s will report the progress on its goals to EPA every six months. Based on the reports, EPA will quantify the benefits of the school’s environmental efforts.

Monmouth University MOU Highlights

On January 16th, EPA and Monmouth University signed a Green MOU outlining how the school will reduce environmental impacts of its campus operations.

MOU Highlights Include:

· Clean energy: In 2005, Monmouth installed the largest solar power project at a university east of the Mississippi. Through EPA’s Green Power partnership, the school will explore options to increase the amount of green energy it uses. · Energy efficiency: Monmouth has already taken steps to reduce energy usage across its campus. Through EPA’s ENERGY STAR partnership, which includes recommendations specifically for colleges and universities, Monmouth will reduce energy use by at least an additional 10 percent.· Water efficiency: Through EPA’s WaterSense program, Monmouth will install water-saving fixtures and appliances. WaterSense fixtures save an estimated 11,000 gallons of water/yr.· Recycling and Waste Reduction: Monmouth already participates in EPA’s national Recycle Mania competition and employs myriad recycling and waste reduction programs on its campuses. Through this agreement, Monmouth will join EPA’s WasteWise program, and will reduce waste and increase recycling.· Cleaner vehicles and construction: Through EPA’s National Clean Diesel Campaign and Clean Construction USA program, Monmouth will learn how to further reduce emissions from vehicles and construction equipment on campus. The school will reduce idling from its fleet of vehicles and require the use of clean diesel-powered equipment at future construction projects.· Landscaping: Monmouth will consult with EPA’s GreenScapes program, through which it will look to adopt more sustainable landscaping practices like reusing and recycling landscape waste, reusing industrial materials for landscaping, and planting drought resistant trees and plants. · Composting: Monmouth will develop plans to compost campus food waste either on campus or at an off-site location.
