Is there a wall of resentment thrown up against them by the fat, complacent two -gigs -a -week eastern groups who, in many cases are owned, wholly, or controlled in some way by booking agencies, promotion and publicity firms and record companies? Are these easterners frightened by the talent from the west? Here's a couple of examples of great western Canadian talent, who prefer to hide behind their western hills, per- haps because of eastern resentment. They manage to make successful tours of the U.S. and the western provinces, but avoid the east like it was striken with the plague. That was just four years ago and this talented Regina group have really, just scratched the sur- face. With their many accomplish- ments, they have become the envy of the young set of Saskatchewan. The White Nights were prob- ably the original rebels of the west, if you call bleaching their hair white, rebellious. Anything out of the norm, for western Canada was almost like inviting a stoning in the downtown square. Like, man, to conform must be a trademark of the west. It must have been a king sized battle to keep the City Fathers from rolling up the sidewalks at 9:00 PM when the Roughies strayed from the norm, and brought home the Grey Cup. Anyway, they're trying, and what better way than with the young set. Here you have four good look- ing guys, with white white hair and white white tuxedos and white white instruments. They must have looked like a mirage from the province of Quebec. But they caught on, thanks to their manager, Joe Vargo. After they conquered the Queen City and many of the other cities of the west, like true western Canadians, they headed for the U.S. and toured Flori- da, Oklahoma and Arizona. They be- came so popular, stateside, that it was a simple matter for Joe to get them signed to a contract with Gaiety Records of Hollywood. Their first record really stirred up a storm back home. The old gang, had made it. Their record "Love That's True" was picked up by both pop stations in Regina and given a larged sized boost which kind of influenced other western Canadian radio stations to give the disc a listen and they found The Nights had a potential hit and followed the lead of CJME and CKCK and gave chart listings to the record. They were even charted in north western Ontario, which is almost considered western Canada. The group is made up of Barry Keating, who plays lead guitar and takes command of the vocal bit. Richard Gettle, who plays organ, rhythm guitar and bass and also sings, not all at the same time, of course. Vern Hoffert plays bass, harmonica and also helps with the singing. Put the above together and you have to have someone keep them that way, and that's where drummer Art Zimmerman comes in. Where do the White Nights go from here? Well, they've already moved a little further into the record- ing field with their second release on Gaiety "Promise Her Love" and "There She Goes". This one has just been released and is picking up action fast, so could be a big one for the boys. By the way, they write all their own material. Where else have they gone? They've strayed into the norm. Yep, they've let their white locks become a part of their past. Anyway, white hair, black hair, brown hair, no hair, the White'Nights have a sound that's representative of the best from the west. Are the White Nights the most popular group in Regina, or are The Checkerlads on top of the heap? Well, it depends on who you ask. You might get 5000 teenaboppers who vote for the Nights but you won't have any trouble getting 5000 who prefer the Lads. That makes a pretty big bundle of votes and a great credit to Joe Vargo, who has groomed both these groups and after many months of hard work, has come up with two groups with that not too often found, star image. The time Nights and Checkerlads took time out from their Hollywood recording session to do a little sightseeing. Here they are seen outside the famous Capitol Tower with their manager Joe Vargo and Jerry Palmer. The Checkerlads were formed about four years ago, but started out as only four men. Four man groups were, like, a dime a dozen. So, they decided to add an organist, which must have been the smartest move they made. They too toured many of the U.S. centres and ended up in Hollywood. Enter, Joe Vargo. Joe was instrumental in getting a recording session cut at the Gary Paxton studios, and it happened again. Another hometown Regina group made it. Their debut disc on Gaiety "Shake Yourself Down" was picked up by CKCK and CJME and given the red carpet exposure treat- ment. The Lads also found them- selves listed on many of the charts throughout the west and even man- aged a few listings on eastern Cana- dian charts. The record caused such a flurry in the U.S. that the group signed a six year contract with Rca for releases in the United States. Arnie Sanns is lead singer for the group as well as the bass player. Bob Stevens is the rhythm guitarist. Larry Reich plays lead guitar and also harmonizes with the group. Harvey Frasz is the drummer, and the smartest move they made, Bob Edwards, besides being the youngest, at 17, is also the organist. The Checkerlads have just released another single "The Dream- er" and "You Just Can't Hide" and have plans for another recording session, maybe this time in their hometown recording studios, to cut enough sides for their first album, as well as another single. The Checkerlads have the western world (western Canada, that is) in their hip pocket, and it's main- ly because of their many perform- ances throughout the western pro- vinces. Canada could be their oyster, if they wanted it.

Here's a couple of examples of great western Canadian talent, who prefer to hide behind their western hills, per-haps because of eastern resentment. They manage to make successful tours of the U.S. and the western provinces, butavoid the east like it was striken with the plague.

The whole staff of RPM paida visit to Montreal and does this townswing. The people connected withthe group scene are really trying hardto promote themselves as honestly asthey can. We're going to get a lot ofmaterial from this big bi-bi town andyou're going to be surprised at justhow much does go on. Mel McCormick, who besides managing the popularM.G. and The Escorts, finds time toboost some of the other talent, sendsnews that The Rabble, one of thenewest groups on the scene, are hav-ing a go at the popularity bit. TheirRca Victor single "Alaboundy Barn"gave them a much deserved boost. They've been making the rounds oflocal and area dances as well as TVappearances. Our Generation are al-so grabbing quite a bit of local action, particularly since their Quality single,"I'm A Man" became a popular itemon Montreal's pop stations. Rememberwe ran a pic on The Monks, not longago? Well, Mel tells us these guyshave dropped the habit and are gettingset to release another disc.

Well, we promised you a look-see at one of the beauties from the

GILLIAN RUSSELLwest coast and here she is. Now go onand give another listen to her NewSyndrome single "The Man In TheStreet" and you'll have to agree thatthe record sounds much better.

Do you know where The Pas,Manitoba is? Well, get ready. It's sofar north of Winnipeg, I was surprisedto hear they had electricity. I thoughtthe bands, if they had any, must beusing gas guitars. Anyway, have wegot a surprise for you. There's agroup in the Pas called DecembersChildren and reports have it that

these four guys, complete with hydroguitars really create an electricalstorm. Their manager, Melvin G.Metzner has spent many hours ingrooming this group, and visitors toThe Pas have been amazed at sucha bundle of talent coming from a townof just over 4000 beeins. That's a goodname fora group, The Human Beeins.Anyway, maybe they'll send us downa photo of the group and maybe we'llsee them in Toronto soon.

That man, Jack Herschorn, has done it again. His company, NewSyndrome, have just released "Look-ing At My Baby" which is on Valiantin the U.S. and has already beenpicked by radio stations in San Diego, and Cinncinati and that all powerfulstation KFRC in San Francisco. Whyall the excitement? The group, knownas The Collectors, are from Vancouver.

It was a little discouragingto find out that Canada was harbour-ing so many American draft dodgers. You might be interested to know thatthere are more Canadians in theAmerican armed forces than there aredraft dodgers, in Canada. As a matterof fact, we have 14 RPM subscribersin Viet Nam and several more through-out the States.

Now, about those Shouters. They're all local Kirkland Lake boys, who are making good, in the musicindustry. They were formed about twoand a half years ago by Paul Thomas, and they haven't looked back once. They've played every Saturday night, without fail, since they were formed,

Where we spread the action on thick. On COLUMBIA RECORDS*

and are one of the most popular groupsin the North country. They've justcut their first disc and it's not bad. Both sides were written by the group.Keep an ear out for "Can I Help It"and "In The Evening". It's already

a big item at CJKL. The group ismade up of Jerry Lemier, Ivon Dumais,Bert Chertrand, Dave Whittaker andPaul Thomas. Their label is L.R.C.

Next week we'll take a lookat The Inferno Five Plus One.

HUMPERDINCK, STEVENS & MOVELOOK GOOD FOR NORTH AMERICA

Engelbert Humperdinck, one ofthe newest of English finds, is shapingup to be a top charter in the UK, withhis Parrot single of "Release Me".Cat Stevens, one of Canada's favouriteBritish recording artists, is startingto happen with his Deram single "Mat-thew And Son". His first single "ILove My Dog" did well across Canada. The Move, who are described as "oneof the wildest group attractions in thebusiness" are punching home withtheir first single, also on Deram,"Night Of Fear". The Move were pro-duced by Denny Cordell, who producedthe Moody Blues.

U.S. trades and many of theimportant radio outlets across thecountry have picked and charted thesehot new British entries.

ORBISON BACK TO STATESFROM TOUR DOWN UNDER

Roy Orbison, who will soon beseen starring in his first flick, forMGM, "The Fastest Guitar Alive" re-turned from a highly successful tour ofAustralia and New Zealand. Alongwith Orbison ,on the junket, were TheYardbirds and Walker Brothers. Theyplayed to sold out houses, which aver-aged out to about 10,000 per perform-ance. Roy even had a chance for a fullday's outing with his Australian FanClub.

After a couple of weeks backhome, Orbison will take off with hisgroup, The Candymen, for a six weektour of Britain and will probably makeanother appearance on Britain's mostpopular teen TVer, "Sunday At ThePalladium" as well as other top ratedBritish TV shows.

"BETWEEN THE BUTTONS"ANOTHER STONES SMASH

The Stones' newest album "Be-tween The Buttons" was hardle off thepresses when it was practically readyfor certification by the RIAA for thecoveted Gold Record Award ($1,000,000in Sales). This gives The Stones thedistinct honour of being the only vocalgroup credited with four LP chart en-tries at the same time. Their recentalbum release, "Got Live If You WantIt", which was released last November, and already a Gold Record winner, isnow in the top slot of most charts.Other albums by this fantastic Britishrecording unit, still receiving chartaction are "Big Hits, High Tide AndGreen Grass" and "Aftermath". On

On top of all the album action,The Stones are riding high on mostcharts with their single "Ruby Tues-day". Even with the controversy overthe flip, "Let's Spend The Night To-gether", many recognize this as beingthe better side and are giving it chartlistings.

"Buttons" will mark the sixthconsecutive Gold Record LP Awardfor The Stones. They were also namedfor the MIDEM Award as the top sellinggroup in England and are also in linefor awards from the National AcademyOf Recording Arts And Sciences(NARAS) and The National Associa-tion of Record Merchandisers (NARM).

%Veil, now this is an interestinglooking jacket. But don't let yourimagination run away with you.She can't even sing. The albumis however, one of those classicitems that will probably turn outto be a top seller. Peter andGordon have that unique talentof harmonizing that puts themhead and shoulders above allothers. Take for instance thebeautiful ballad "Young AndBeautiful" or the cut that fol-lows, "When I Fall In Love",they're just too much. If you'renot a Peter and Gordon fan, justcurl yourself around this albumfor a bit and you're sure to jointhe club. You should see thepicture the barber has.

JOHNNY MAIMS

You know the old saying, "Youcan't judge a record by its cov-er"? Well, this is no exception, unless you turn the cover over.Anyway, who needs a beautifulcover to centre your buyingpangs in on Johnny Mathis. Hisrecords could come in a paperbag and you would still be as-sured of 12, (yes, there's 12cuts on this album) of the mostenjoyable bits of listening pleas-ure available. Johnny even man-aged to move into Beatle terri-tory with "Eleanor Rigby" doneto a turn. The old girl would'veflipped. "Strangers In The Night"well, why go on. If Johnny Mathissings it buy it.

A1,1111:16,.

It only took two singles "Ain'tGonna Lie" and "98.6" to makeKeith one of the giants of theworld music industry. Becausethis album contains these hitsit too could be a giant. Theother cuts are also well done. One in particular is "The TeenyBopper Song" done up in a Pali-sades Park style. One cut wetabbed as having hit potential is"Tell It To My Face" and sureenough, there it is, as a singleand already given the nod bythose who know, in the U.S. Sothere you are, an album with twohot past sellers and another onejust warming up, and an artistwho has so much talent, he justhas to be around for a long time.

WHAT IS THE DELAY!!!WHAT IS THE HOLD UP!!! Twodays after a record is released, everyone wants to see the recordclimbing the charts. Well, it justdoesn't happen that way. The over-night action of Toronto the "bad"doesn't reflect the delay that occursacross Canada. The record must ar-rive at the station in the far reaches

of Canada and by the time it is pro-grammed and reported back to RPM,a week or two weeks or even threeweeks can pass. Then RPM (and bythe way, RPM isn't "instant") has tobe written, compiled, laid out andprinted. A whole month may pass be-fore the reaction to a new record isindicated in the RPM charts. Oneyear ago, there was so little productfrom Canada that it was easy to geta record on the Canadian contentchart in RPM. Today, one Ottawarecord company is putting out asmany records as the whole industrydid, one year ago.

If you are a formula radiostation, then you better send some-one out to do an "aircheck" of anon -formula Toronto radio station tosee what's happening. I also maysuggest that the west coast "pro-phets" look into the programming ofa certain radio station in Torontoand report this revolution to theirprogramming service subscribers.C'MON FELLAS WE'RE TOLDYOU FOLLOW PROGRAMMINGTRENDS. Explain this one, and may-be a few radio stations that wereled on by the "format" might just

come up with a red face or two. ITHAS ALSO BEEN REPORTED TOME that the disc jockeys at thisstation will be NOW GET THIS..."disc jockeys". Right from the toplevel, we are told that the musicdirector and disc jockeys of thisstation, will not (REPEAT - WILLNOT) be personal managers, record-ing artists, booking agents, recordproducers, nor will they be accept-ing "pieces of the action". That isvery very good, because the stationwill be above reproach and won'tever have to worry about (lean overwhile I whisper in your ear)..........AYOLAPAY. (tee hee hee hee!!!!)

WHA' APPENING??? Humblepie is on the menu for the "Puppetshow"/// A certain over -extendedpersonal manager is saying, "Killthem with PITY fellas". The headline story on the"pop" scene this week is the sen-sational divorce casein which SANDIESHAW was named as co-respondent.It seems that the alleged incident tookplace some two years ago when Sandiewas a mere 17 so she may have chang-ed since then. Meanwhile Sandie isoff to Vienna in two weeks to singEngland's entry in the EurovisionSong Festival.

PETULA CLARK has her firstever number one hit song in the U.K.with "This Is My Song". Pet knockedthe MONKEES out of the top slot aftersix consecutive weeks in that positionfor "I'm A Believer". Petula will bemaking her next recording under TONYHATCH'S supervision, her differencesthere having been settled. Also thisweek, in Hollywood, it was announcedthat Petula Clark will co-star in thefilm version of "Finian's Rainbow"with FRED ASTAIRE.

The ROLLING STONES are inthe news again. Three weeks ago, theboys appeared on the London Palla-dium TV'er and refused to co-operatewith the producer. This time, some"admirer" tipped off East Sussexpolice that there would be drugs atKEITH RICHARD'S housewarming par-ty. Squads of the boys in blue arrivedand searched the premises, findingnothing. They decided to hold a fullscale investigation before they leftand so interviewed house guests MICK.JAGGER, MARIANNE FAITHFUL,CHRIS FARLOWE, and others stillwithout turning up further information.Meanwhile the Stones are enjoying atop ten hit with "Let's Spend TheNight Together".

CONGRATULATIONS ON OUR THIRD ANNIVERSARY(and the flowers)

Here they are... OUR GANG.PENELOPE PENTELOPE

Hailing from Saskaloon in Canada's west, Penny can speak with authorityon the Country Music scene. She came to RPM on the strong recommendation ofour own beloved Ellie Capreese. RPM heard about Penny's plight (that she hadgone 100% Mod and was wondering around the Village in a mini skirt, with longhair down to her hips and over indulging in coffee and the other things the Villageoffers. Canada Bill went out to find Penny and we put her in charge of the "cow-boy music". In no time Penny has become modern and now it's "Country Music"all the way. Have Penny tell you someday, about her years in country schoolhouses, and her appearance at the Opry. She will, at the drop of a cowboy hat.

E.I.E.1.0. MacDONALDYou don't know it but here's a gal that Ellie is grooming to become an-

other great RPM scribe. Currently, E.I. is doing undercover work for Ellie andBebe Gee, and she's coming up with some real "scoops". How E.I. came to usis quite a story. Not too long ago, E.I. was with the maintenance staff of a radiostation, and Ellie's hot nose for news brought her in contact with E.I. The rest ishistory and today you'll find E.I. sweeping up dirt just anywhere she can find it.A feature column is in store for E.I.E.I.O. MacDonald.

CANADA BILLThe idol of millions of Canadian teenagers, Canada was a group musician

who turned crusader when he decided to get a job. In his marvelous costume(with the trap door, sewn up) he ferrets out the news about Canadian groups.Canada knows whereof he speaks. Old Ed: discovered Canada writing for a Cana-dian teen supplement and talked him into coming with RPM, after the axe fell.Canada is revered by teens in Canada and the U.S.A. His mail draw isonly sec-ond to the "fabulous" Capreese.

ELVIRA CAPREESEIn 1929 Elvira made her first cylinder and it came out in Canada. The disc

jockeys ("radio speakers", she called them) didn't give it a whirl and after sev-eral appearances in the "Follies", in the U.S., Ellie returned to Canada whereOld Ed: found her working for an ad agency. Willing to reform, she was offered anhonest job with RPM as a gossip columnist, which she accepted and became an

from left to right:

an overnight sensation, and to this day, the symbols %$8116 appear after her nameanytime it's mentioned. Ellie is RPM and RPM is Ellie. She manages to upstageeveryone, including the Canadian record men and disc jockeys. She tells us sheis meticulous in her research of each story and might be called the "star" ofRPM. Around the office they say "Don't fool with E.C.".

OLD ED:Always in the background is the driving force behind RPM. He once saw

a disc jockey throw a Canadian record in an ashcan and started a trade paper onthe Canadian Music scene. To the staff he's a wonderful guy who is a friend toeveryone and a prolific Canadian. In his early thirties, Old Ed: is a parachutist(skydiver), pilot, all round sportsman. He comes from a background of police work, social host and sports director of a Bermuda hotel, beer company representative, record company promotion man and knows the business well. If there is a musi-cian in Canada who needs some extra mileage, the guy to contact is, Old Ed:.

IRVINGIrving is a dog (although he's not quite willing to admit it) and is the

mascot of the Canadian Music Industry. A giant German Shepherd that came toOld Ed: on Xmas day, five years ago. A fugitive from a travelin' vaudeville dogact, Irving wanted to audition for a record company. His big break came in 1966when he made his debut on disc. Even though the performance was only a back-ground, Irving is very happy about his recital, and pleased that the record cameout on a major label. Irving is presently in charge of record reviews in RPM, andanswering the door. He also likes to check the entertainment in the Village fromtime to time. He lives in Whitby, Ontario in a modern $35,000 dog house made ofglass and brick that overlooks Lake Ontario.
