            WHAT IS EARLY HEAD START? Early Head Start (EHS) is a federally-funded community-based program for low-income families with infants and toddlers and pregnant women. Its mission is simple: • to promote healthy prenatal outcomes for pregnant

women, • to enhance the development of very young children,

and • to promote healthy family functioning OUR MISSION In partnership with parents and community agencies, the Lourie Center Early Head Start creates a model program dedicated to serving income-eligible families with children from birth to age three, and expectant parents. Our services are provided in homes and child care centers and family childcare settings in Prince George’s and Montgomery Counties in Maryland. We support families in building skills that are the foundation for lifelong learning and growth.

OUR VISION The Lourie Center Early Head Start is a community-based program offering training, research, and comprehensive services to build stronger families in an environment of collaboration and respect for all.

Enrollment information

We served 180 children and 13 pregnant women during program year 2010-2011.

128 children were enrolled in our home based option 52 children were enrolled in our child care option. Of

those children 100% received full time child care.

Primary Language of our families: English 63: 33% Spanish 100: 52% African 5: 2% Unspecified 25: 13%

PARENT INVOLVEMENT 

EHS parents are involved in Policy Council, Parent committees, and planning the EHS Family events. Parents also participate in home visits, group socializations, parent trainings-using the Train the Trainer Model- and trainings with the Psychologist Consultant that focus on “positive discipline” and the social emotional development of the family CHILD CARE PARTNERS  We partnered with 4 Family Child Care Providers in Montgomery County; 2 Family Care Child Providers in Prince George’s County, and 2 Child Care Centers in Prince George’s County to provide full time child care for EHS children.

TRANSITION REPORT 2010­2011  44 children transition from the EHS program out of the 44 children who transitioned 14 are enrolled at Prince Georges County Head Start (HS) 2 children are enrolled at Montgomery County Head start, 13 are attending Child Care Centers, 1 is enrolled in Community–based Child Pre-schools and 14 children remained home with family members.  PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS  Early Head Start Honored by AMERIGROUP On December 8, 2010, the EHS program received the 2010 AMERIGROUP Community Health Healthy Hero Award for outstanding leadership and innovation in the area of health promotion. The Spirit of Giving is in the Air! The Lourie Center launched the annual Adopt a Family program in early November and the community quickly embraced the idea of helping our families. Dozens of individual families, business groups and corporations gathered toys, clothing and gift cards to ensure the 109 children in the Lourie Center’s Early Head Start Program and their families enjoyed the holidays wrapped in warmth and an outpouring of support.

Program Has New Office For several years, the EHS program has been searching for office space that would allow all program staff members to work in a more unified workplace under one roof. In December 2010, the staff moved into their new office space located at 7833 Walker Drive suite 610, in Greenbelt, Maryland. Under the Big Top In a continuing community partnership with both Easter Seals and the National Institute of Health (NIH), EHS families were offered complimentary tickets to attend the Ringling Bros. & Barnum & Bailey Circus at the Verizon Center. NIH’s Recreation and Welfare Association sponsored the tickets STRATEGIC PLAN  Strategic plan 2010-2011 • Parents will be given opportunities to fully utilize the

EHS program. • Ensure that the EHS program’s monitoring system is

effective to keep the program in compliance.

• Develop effective recruitment and enrollment

strategies in the Landover, Capital Height service area.

• EHS children will demonstrate age appropriate “School Readiness” skills upon entering Head Start or pre-school.

SCHOOL READINESS 

EHS supports School Readiness for infants and toddlers by providing services that are grounded in the philosophy that the parent/child relationship is a critical foundation for early development. An everyday environment that is nurturing, explorative, safe, and rich in language will provide the experiences necessary for our children to be fully “School Ready” at 3.

AUDITS AND REVIEWS 

Federal Triennial Review conducted, March 2011.EHS program was found to be in compliance with all applicable Head Start Performance Standards, laws, regulations and policy requirements.

EHS 2010 Audit completed; no findings of noncompliance.
