Thank You and Good Luck

After four weeks of early mornings, wild winds, challenging water and magnificent sunrises and sunsets, we’ve made it to Regatta Day! I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who’s partici-pated in the Leichhardt Corporate Challenge this year. For all our new rowers, we hope you’ve not only learned some of the skills of rowing but also something about how you function in a new environment and different team configuration, and how a team of differing strengths and skill levels can work together. We hope you’ve discovered some of the great things about rowing: how the boat lifts when everyone takes the stroke together; how beautiful Sydney Harbour looks at sunrise; and how good break-fast tastes after a rowing session. We are always delighted to welcome back returning crews and it’s great to see so many Challenge veterans introducing novices to the sport. We appre-ciate your ongoing support and hope that this year was the best Challenge yet. We’ve had a ball, and we hope it’s been an enjoyable and worthwhile experience for all our rowers. Thank you also to our Corporate Challenge coaches, coxes, tinny drivers, caterers and boat repairers. With a record number of crews competing this year, I know that some of our coxes have been practically living at the Club, Breakfast Co-Ordinator Nancy never wants to see another loaf of bread, and our team of boat carers have spent many hours making sure our fleet was up to scratch for every crew. Our coach-es put a huge amount of energy and enthusiasm into every training session and are all very proud of how their crews have progressed. Whatever the regatta results, the coaches tell me that this is definitely the nicest group of Challenge rowers we’ve ever had on the pontoon! If you’ve caught the rowing bug and would like to continue rowing at LRC we’d love to have you as a member of the Club. Whether you’ve only spent a few sessions on the water, are a returning rower or have family, children or friends who would like to give it a try, the Club offers a wide range of options (Juniors, Recreational, Squad Rowing). There is information on our website at www.lrc.com.au or talk to me, Gordon Cooper or your coach at the Regatta or have a chat with one of the competing Recreational rowing crews. We look forward to welcoming you as an LRC Member.

Row Hard, Have Fun and Celebrate!

Sunday afternoons are going to be so quiet without my enthusiastic BCG Challengers! Tim and I have had so much fun coach-ing our ever-changing squad who have shuffled interstate work commitments and put family time on hold to make it to as many training sessions as possible. It’s exciting for us to see novices turn into rowers, to see tentative bladework become strong strokes, and to see rowers who have been off the water for a while get that competitive spirit back. We appreciate your commit-ment and enthusiasm and hope you’ve enjoyed your time on the water and on the erg. Everyone has made so much progress in such a short time, just think how oarsome a rower you could be after another 300 hours on the water! We hope to see you all back on the water at Leichhardt in the near future.

Enthusiastic, charming, focussed and just a tiny bit

competitive, the two (hopefully!) BCG eights

enjoyed the peaceful Sunday afternoon sunset

rows, Friday morning “relaxation row” and

erging “boat race”. But now they’re ready for some serious racing.

COLIN BIGGERS PAISLEY

Looking so good, they made a video about them! The Colin Biggers Paisley crew look set to become the latest YouTube rowing sensation with this over-view of their Corporate Challenge ’journey”. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r8Vym0krV1c Proud coach Guy Elron says: “Let me also take this opportunity to say just how much I've enjoyed coaching the crew from CBP - they're a fantastic group of people and have soaked up so much technical detail from me. I'm simply amazed at how far they've gone in such a short time. Fancy rowing to Kerosene Bay and back without any major mishaps in only their 6th session on the water (ever).“

HARVEY NORMAN

Week One Harvey Norman sent Leichhardt a rowing crew, Who indicate they have no idea of what to do, Inaugural row was to Rodd Island in an amazing ride, Thanks to a nor-East wind & an ebbing tide. Week Two They handle the shell with deft training skills, And systematically destroyed the rowing drills, Foot on the black spot check the rigger and the gate, Hold your breath Jerry now- we are going to row with all eight. Week Three Next session afloat requires a firm sideways push, To get away from the dock- toward Drummoyne’ bush, With Coach Rexy chatting away far from the end of his tether, We play a Colonel Bogey march- so they all row together!!!! Week Four Legend Mackney says it’s not a sin to work close to the water, But it is a sin to run away from where an oar really oughta, Be placed – square and in at full reach- it’s an easy matter, The training is over & Harvey Norman is going to a regatta !!!!!!!!

MYOB/ON DECK The MYOB crew are all new to the sport of rowing. As a collective team building challenge, they have picked one of the most difficult and com-mitted team sports to master. These guys have been willing and enthusi-astic about learning the basics of the rowing stroke. Even the coxswain is new to the sport but has quickly risen to the challenge of being the 'brains' to the crew. The coordination and sense of timing doesn't always come easy to all but as a team they have displayed enormous resolve and dedication to work as a crew. There's a huge amount to master in four weeks and the progress they have made is impressive. They have faced both tough headwinds with mighty waves and perfect glassy water conditions. They oddly enjoyed the ordeal of the headwind and white caps that suddenly whipped up but made it back safely. MYOB have ventured as far east as the tip of Cockatoo Island and then back up to UTS and into the pontoon making a good 6km circuit. To achieve that is a great accomplishment without coming to grief! Come race day, they

will do themselves proud and run a gritty race full of control and timing!

NBN ACTIVATE

Well how easy it is. NBN Activate crew turns out to have seven experienced rowers and one lonely novice. Their first training ses-sion was in a coxless four, must be a record for Corporates. They are a very easy crew to work with, mainly because there is nothing to teach them so all my attention has been dumped on poor old novice Tom in the bow. When they decide to row as an eight they look like this: Stroke “Chirpy” Susan 7 “Muscles” James 6 “Super flex” Andrew 5 “Seventeen years ago” Mike 4 “I’ll be ready soon” Oliver 3 “Super cyclist” Chris 2 “I think I rowed previously” Samantha Bow “Board meetings” Tom Many thanks to “Bitten” Reece for filling in for Sam when needed. NBN Activate will be a force to be reckoned with on Sunday, look out Olympians!

We started off our training with 8 very keen crew who were all completely new to rowing. Early days were tricky but progress was achieved in every outing much to the joy and encouragement of all participants. With at least 2 confirmed converts, everyone has enjoyed the experience alt-hough it is with some trepidation that we head into the challenge of racing against experienced rowers! I am very proud of my crew’s achievements, determination and just downright willingness to get out there and take on the challenge of mastering a whole new skillset. Go crew!

An example of a crew Coach wanted the crew to arrive 30 minutes before the change over time. This took a while to achieve. Early on Jonesy (not his real name) arrived about 25min later than the rest of the crew and so missed out on the short erg session. Coach told Jonesy that in all fairness he would have to make up the erg session everyone else had done after the row. He smilingly agreed. Coach suggested someone might volunteer to keep him company, after all doing ergs by yourself is tiresome. After a gentle prod, Jonesy jumped onto the erg, with the volunteer close behind him. Very soon after that the entire crew was back on the erg, helping Jonesy make amends. Now that’s a crew!! All the best NTC Skullers, you have been a pleasure to coach.

TTW

With Richa in stroke as is best for the boat,

And Mike is in seven, a bowsider’s heaven,

Making way for Scott in his best rowing spot,

Supported by Nick who has fitted right in,

As the second stroke Mark keeps bow four on track,

And Amir casts an eye as his blade catches time,

Next Andre will focus on keeping the form,

As Kelvin the bowman keeps the lift on the water,

The coxswain is calling, exhorting, supporting,

This crew comes together, from tentative tapping

As blades hunt for the water,

And what’s that you say? What is it you want?

Sitting back together, knees down and hands up at the catch,

The boat, it starts moving. We are! We are rowing!

From bridge to the point, how far you can row now,

But now we must focus on racing,

You’ve all come so far, push those legs,

Stay together, rock over, let’s fly to the finish.

Great stuff!

VISIONSTREAM V

With a few return Corporate Challengers and the remainder first time rowers, Shannon and I have had a great time working with Vision Stream. Always punctual (mostly), easy to teach (once they started rowing in the right direction), great potential, and yet to let a few crabs scare them away. Let's hope for no ejectors on race day!

Every crew will race three times: Heat, Semi and Industry Final. Each race will score points—5 points for a win down to 1point for last place The six crews with the highest scores will race for the LRC Cup. All crews are handicapped according to their level of expe-rience, gender and age, and will start at different times according to their handicap. The slowest crew starts first (on GO) and the starter counts until all the other crews have start-ed –crews could have to wait up to 20 seconds before they start. If the handicapping is cor-rect, the chasing crews will catch the crews off GO just at the finish line. It should make for some close racing and exciting finishes.

Let the Racing Begin… THANK YOU ALL FOR BEING PART OF THE 2017 LRC CORPORATE CHALLENGE HAPPY FATHERS DAY SEE YOU NEXT YEAR...
