ABOUT THE STORY On February 18, 1952, a massive nor’easter struck New England, pummeling towns along the Eastern seaboard and wreaking havoc on anything caught in its destructive path, including two 500-foot oil tankers. Both the SS Pendleton and SS Fort Mercer, bound for Boston, Massachusetts and Portland, Maine, respectively, were ripped in half, trapping their crews inside. Senior officer aboard the stern of the Pend-leton, first assistant engineer Ray Sybert (Casey Affleck), quickly real-izes it is up to him to take charge of the frightened crew and encourage them to work together to keep the ship afloat as long as possible.

Personnel of the U.S. Coast Guard Station in Chatham, Massachusetts are busy helping local fishermen protect their boats from the storm when they receive word that the damaged ships are adrift in nearby waters. Warrant Officer Daniel Cluff (Eric Bana), recently-appointed station chief, immediately dispatches the CG 36500 lifeboat under the command of Captain Bernie Webber (Chris Pine) to search for survivors. Webber and his crew of three men on board the 36-foot, motorized wooden lifeboat set off on the perilous mission with bleak prospects at best, and before they even clear the harbor, the boat’s windshield and compass are destroyed. Yet the men persevere and, despite hurricane-force winds, 70-foot waves, frigid temperatures and zero visibility, miraculously locate the Pendleton and rescue 32 of its 33 men in the midst of the turbulent gale. Facing the worst of Mother Nature, they head back into the belly of the beast, returning home a total of 36 men on their battered 12-seat lifeboat.

THE MOST DARING RESCUE MISSION IN THE HISTORY OF THE COAST GUARD

The Finest Hours is packed with thrilling, larger-than-life action sequences and anchored by a strong central theme that resonates throughout the story—the strength of the human spirit. “It is an uplifting story about people accomplishing something with great, noble intentions because it was their job,” says producer Jim Whitaker. “I really believe in movies that are about hope, and that is ultimately what this film is about.”

Producer Dorothy Aufiero agrees, saying, “These young men knew exactly what they were getting into when they climbed into that tiny lifeboat. They had the courage to go out there and put others’ safety first and do something incredible, and I find that truly inspirational.”

The SS Pendleton rescue was front-page news at the time, but not everyone today is familiar with the story, including families of the men who were part of the rescue itself. “These guys just didn’t talk about it because, to them, it was their job,” explains Aufiero.

Recreating their gallant efforts on the big screen was the perfect way to tell the world an unforgettable story where the real facts are so compelling that the filmmakers were committed to remaining faithful to the actual events. Director Craig Gillespie says, “We wanted to be very specific, very clear and technically accurate with events involving the real people in the story. Being able to get those nuances and truths makes the story all the more interesting while allowing us to present unique and authentic individuals.”

Of the many people closely involved with the February 1952 rescue mission, only two are still around today, Coast Guard engineers Andy Fitzgerald and Mel “Gus” Gouthro. Fitzgerald, who was the Coast Guard third-class engineer, stepped in for his friend and senior engineer Gout-hro, who was sick the night of the rescue and remained in the Chatham Coast Guard station. Both men, still friends to this day, were engaged by the filmmakers in the early stages of development to help ensure all the facts and details were authentic. Both have never forgotten that historic night, remembering it like it was yesterday.

“Some people still look at the Pendleton rescue as a suicide mission, but I never saw it like that,” says Fitzgerald, who is now 84 and lives with his wife in Colorado. “Like we used to say back then, ‘You have to go out, but you don’t have to come back.’ Our job was to save people and that’s what we did, and I’m damn proud of that.”

Adds Gouthro, “When people ask me about the Pendleton, what I try to impress on them is that it really was no big deal to these guys. Those four men went out and did their job. They didn’t like it . . . it’s not like they were having a good time out on that lifeboat, but it’s what they were told to do, so they went out and did it.”

A tale of humanity in the midst of incredible horror, Son of Saul takes us back to October

1944, Auschwitz-Birkenau Death Camp. Saul Ausländer is a Hungarian member of the

Sonderkommando, a group of Jewish prisoners isolated from the camp and forced to assist the

Nazis in the machinery of large-scale exterminations. While working in one of the crematoriums,

Saul discovers the body of a boy he takes for his son. As the Sonderkommando plans a rebellion,

Saul decides to carry out an impossible task: save the child's body from the flames, find a rabbi

to recite the Mourner's Kaddish, and offer the boy a proper burial.

Year 2015 marks the 40th presentation of the Toronto International Film Festival. What started out in 1976

at the Windsor Arms Hotel as three film lovers (Bill Marshall, Henk Van der Kolk and Dusty Cohl) attempted to bring such an event to Toronto has developed into one of the most respected and popular film festivals in the world. Interestingly, Hollywood studios initially withdrew their submissions to the event due to concerns that Toronto audiences would be too parochial for their products. Obviously that view has evolved dramatically over the ensuing years. Another notable fact is that in 1994 the decision was made to replace the original name “Festival of Festivals” with “Toronto International Film Festival Group (TIFFG), and in 2009 the umbrella organization TIFFG was renamed TIFF.

TIFF is a publicly attended film festival held each September in Toronto, Ontario Canada. It starts the Thursday night after Labour Day (the first Monday in September in Canada) and lasts for eleven days. In 2015, approximately 473,000 attendees, 5400 industry professionals and 1200 journalists viewed titles the public will see in our theatres this fall such as Room, Spotlight, The Danish Girl and Legend, as well as a number of additional films shown for which producers were hoping to find distributors. During this year’s celebration, viewers had a chance to choose more than 300 film offerings from over 60 countries across the globe.

In 1998, Variety magazine acknowledged that TIFF “is second only to Cannes in terms of high-profile movies, stars and market activity.” In 2007, Time magazine stated that TIFF had “grown from its place as the most influential fall film festival to the most influential film festival, period,” partially the result of TIFF’s ability and reputation for generating “Oscar buzz.” In 2011, it was announced that the TIFF organization generates an estimated annual impact of $170 million Canadian dollars (CAD).

Mike DeLorenzo, specialty film buyer for Regal, has had several opportunities to experience TIFF first-hand. “One thing I always enjoy about the festival is the wide variety of films the organization programs; I was able to view 43 films in 7 days this year.” Following are brief descriptions of Mike’s top-four picks that represent the festival’s cinematic array.

THE DRESSMAKER

This Australian film starring Kate Winslet, Liam Hemsworth and Hugo Weaving follows Tilly (Winslet) as she returns to her small hometown. Clearly out of place in this dusty outpost in her jaw-dropping couture wardrobe, Tilly begins to recall a traumatic childhood memory that resulted with her leaving the town and being reviled by its residents. Part black comedy, part drama, this film has a Grey Gardens film meets director Jean-Pierre Jeunet freshness to it.

EVOLUTIONNicholas lives in a mysterious and isolated seaside village with a notable absence of men. Taking frequent trips to the mental health clinic, Nicholas discovers that the world is not what it seems as he witnesses the secrets of the island. Lucille Hadzilalovic (Innocence, 2004) directs this psychoanalytic thriller that is reminiscent of Under the Skin. Our Alchemy will be releasing the film next year.

HARDCOREThis Russian/U.S. action-packed extravaganza is one of the fastest 90-minute films you’ll ever see. Shot entirely with a first-person point-of-view, it plays like a non-stop version of Call of Duty. Waking up in a lab, a viewer discovers his identity only to be interrupted by a squad of hooligans intent on killing everyone. From this moment on, it’s an adrenalin rush mixed with Parkour action resulting in a body count in the hundreds. Aided by Jimmy (Sharito Copley), the main character tries to unravel the mystery of his identity. Acquired at the festival by STX, this movie should hit screens sometime next year.

ZOOMThis newest film by Pedro Morelli (Entre Nos 2013) blends the stories of a comic-book artist, a film director and a novelist. Gael Garcia Bernal, Allison Pill and Tyler Labine star in this unique world of intertwining stories that seamlessly brings to life three very different realities.

double-crosses, greed and revenge. It

follows a group of criminals and corrupt cops

who find themselves in serious trouble. The

Russian mafia is blackmailing them to execute

a virtually unachievable heist. Impossible as

it may seem, eventually the thugs hatch a

plan: On one side of town, half of them will

arrange the murder of an unsuspecting rookie

cop. And while the police force is distracted

by a 999 call (“officer down”), the other half

of the gangster team will pull off the job. Their

strategy is foiled when the scapegoat rookie

unexpectedly survives the attack and fights

back, triggering a breakneck, electrifying finale.

Set in the 1950s during the early

stages of Cold War tensions,

Alan Bennett's story is based on the

true story of Miss Shepherd (played

by a magnificent Maggie Smith). She

is a woman of uncertain origins who

"temporarily" parked her van in Bennett's

London driveway and proceeded to

live there for 15 years. What begins

as a begrudged favor becomes a

relationship that will change both

of their lives. Filmed on the street

and in the house where Bennett and

Miss Shepherd lived all those years,

acclaimed director Nicholas Hytner

reunites with iconic writer Alan Bennett

(The Madness of King George, The

History Boys) to bring this rare and

touching portrait to the screen.

Once there was a young prince whose father, the king of the East, sent him down into Egypt to find a pearl. But when the prince arrived, the people poured him a cup. Drinking it, he forgot he was the son of a king, forgot about the pearl and fell into a deep sleep.

These haunting words open and align your understanding of Terrence Malick’s new cinematic

vision Knight of Cups. Renowned for films that make the audience accept new universal truths and widen personal perceptions, Malick delivers a reality created by story and driven by a cast of thousands led by Christian Bale.

Rick (Christian Bale) lives a life of excess that includes wine, women and song, a trio made for escapism. We join this comedy writer as he exploits the access of Los Angeles indulgence and Hollywood industry forgiveness. Bursting at the seams with regret and denial, Rick seeks distraction in the arms and beds of women of definition: Della (Imogen Poots), Nancy (Cate Blanchett), Helen (Freida Pinto), Elizabeth (Natalie Portman), Karen (Teresa Palmer) and Isabel (Isabel Lucas).

His female distractions and long-time connections serve to open Rick’s inner eye to see the heart of his true problem—why he escapes family, death and the path to becoming whole again. Will he stay lost? Can a man find himself if he won’t look to the footprints of his path? To get our own definition into Knight of Cups, we talk to producers Nicolas Gonda and Sarah Green. Both have a past with Malick from the Best Picture Academy Award®-nominated Tree of Life starring Brad Pitt, Jessica Chastain and Sean Penn.

Film Guide: This film holds the faces and talents of thousands, and though we have defined actors and story arcs, that wasn’t always the case. How did Terrence find his sculpture in the middle of a large piece of marble?

Sarah Green: Terry makes a lot of his choices in post-production. We know very clearly the ideas and storylines going in and we know who the characters are going to be, but there is a beautiful freedom in the way we work. We shoot very rich raw material that takes a lot of work in editorial, but produces the most compelling narrative.

Page 21: Regal Cinema Art Film Guide, Winter 2015

FG: Can you speak to this large and talented cast and how they interact with Christian Bale’s character?

SG: If you listen to the story that Brian Dennehy tells in the trailer, which also comes in and out of the movie, you understand that all of these people, men and women, are guides of some sort. Each one of them has something to teach Rick on the way, much in the same way that the people we meet in our lives guide and change us. And in that way, these people who come into Rick’s life, long or short, form his journey.

Nicolas Gonda: Yes, just as in the quote, Rick has fallen into a deep sleep and it is on him to wake up. Another quote to this state is by Walker Percy that goes, “The search is what anyone would undertake if he were not sunk in the everydayness of his own life. To become aware of the possibility of the search is to be onto something. Not to be onto something is to be in despair.” And so it’s a similar theme of realizing the journey that one is on and recognizing the signs that are all around us.

FG: Los Angeles itself is a character in this film. How does the township of excess and access play into who Rick allows himself to become?

NG: That’s a great observation. The city is very much a character, and it’s important to note that it is a good

character. It is a protagonist that allows you to find the beauty beyond the surface. Through the process of filming in Los Angeles, we all came in with pre-conceived notions and concerns on the logistics of shooting there. Especially since our previous shoots with Terrence were in more rural communities in other parts of the country.

We were amazed to find how receptive Los Angeles was and what a joy it was to shoot there. And much

like the other characters in this film, the city is providing signposts for Christian’s

character and guides him. It has many layers and after watching

the film multiple times, you’ll find the city shines in new ways every time. I don’t think anyone has ever seen Los Angeles through this type of lens.

FG: Currently this film has a release date set for next March, but when

you have your hands on something as artistic as a

Terrence Malick film, do you attempt to push it closer to

award season?

SG: (Laughs.) We release it when the time is right. This is a film that no one

saw before Berlin, at all. We finished the film, brought it to Berlin then engaged with Broad Green, our exciting distributors. It’s not about award season for us; it’s about what time is right for this film and if we are ready. When everything aligns, that is when it’s ready for audiences.

In theatres starting March 2016.

In this exquisitely made and terrifying new horror film, the age-old concepts of witchcraft, black magic and possession are innovatively brought together to tell the intimate and riveting story of one family’s frightful unraveling in the New England wilderness circa 1630.

Writer/director Robert Eggers’ debut feature, which premiered to great acclaim at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival — winning the Best Director Prize in the U.S. Narrative Competition — painstakingly recreates a God-fearing New England decades before the 1692 Salem witch trials, in which religious convictions tragically turned to mass hysteria. Told through the eyes of the adolescent Thomasin — in a star-making turn by newcomer Anya Taylor-Joy — and supported by mesmerizing camera work and a powerful musical score, THE WITCH is a chilling and groundbreaking new take on the genre.

The Untold Story of Mother Teresa

Page 25: Regal Cinema Art Film Guide, Winter 2015

winter 2015 | FILMGUIDE 23

directed by Wil l iam Riead

The Letters is the long awaited biographical film exploring the adult life of Mother Teresa through letters she wrote over a 50-year period to

her longtime friend and spiritual advisor, Father Celeste van Exem. Equally captivating is the nun’s earlier life. According to writer Joan Guntzelman, “Teresa always was her own person, startlingly independent, obedient, yet challenging some preconceived notions and expectations.” She was born Gonxa (Agnes) Bojaxhiu in Skopje, Yugoslavia on August 27, 1910, the youngest of three out of five surviving children in a family described as “well-off,” contrary to facts often reported. In fact, the family lived in one of two houses they owned—“We lacked for nothing.”

In the film, we witness the moment on September 10, 1946 when Mother Teresa first receives the calling to leave the convent to live among the poor. The story captures her struggles in India with personal poverty as she begins her work. (Initially misunderstood and shunned by those she sought to help, she remained “lonely for six decades.”) The story illustrates the lack of support from fellow nuns at the convent, her inability to get the attention of the Vatican, her depression as the sisters at Loreto turn their backs on her, referring to her as "evil" for leaving her cloistered life. And finally, as her former students begin one-by-one to graduate from Loreto and join her, we are able to experience the humble beginning of the Missionaries of Charity.

Along the way a BBC reporter assigned to Calcutta as a bureau chief during post-war India begins to hear about Mother Teresa's work in the city’s worst slum district. On a slow news day he wanders into Mota Jiel to locate this visionary and attempts to secure an interview but is rejected. Her unexpected modesty and selflessness fascinates the reporter, an avowed atheist, and he begins to visit her weekly. Ultimately relenting, Mother Teresa becomes news around the world and over time she and the reporter form a lifelong bond and friendship.

Posthumously, at the Vatican, an impassioned speech is presented to a gathering of cardinals. The discourse ends with an entreaty of why Mother Teresa should be canonized a saint.

Coming to theatres December 2015.

Page 26: Regal Cinema Art Film Guide, Winter 2015

Four-time Oscar®-winning filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen (No Country for Old Men, True Grit,

Fargo) write and direct Hail, Caesar!, an all-star comedy set during the latter years of Hollywood’s Golden Age. Starring Josh Brolin, George Clooney, Alden Ehrenreich, Ralph Fiennes, Jonah Hill, Scarlett Johansson, Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton and Channing Tatum, Hail, Caesar! follows a single day in the life of a studio fixer who is presented with plenty of problems to fix. The comedy is produced by the Coen brothers under their Mike Zoss Productions banner alongside Working Title Films’ Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner.

The name Roger Deakins rings true for film enthusiasts; even those unaware of his name most definitely know Deakins’ work. His eye has granted us epic moments and films, such as Fargo, The Shawshank Redemption, Skyfall and No Country for Old Men. Deakins took the time to talk with us about his new Coen Brothers film: Hail, Caesar!.

Film Guide: Do we mainly follow Mannix through this film as he searches for the missing Baird Whitlock? And would you say he is an iconic gumshoe type?

Roger Deakins: Eddie Mannix, played by Josh Brolin, is a “Mr. Fix It” and, as that character, he leads us through the film. We do jump into the different stories of the characters in the various movies, but we always come back to Eddie. The craziness we see is Eddie’s world, what he deals with every day.

FG: As the film is set on a ’50s Hollywood backlot, how do the movies shot there intertwine with the main story?

RD: The main character, played by Josh Brolin, is a production executive who has to deal with a variety of films being produced by his studio. We get the chance to be pulled into the many different worlds the various movies depict. Because we get to know the characters—actors, crew, directors, producers—who are involved in the movies, we get the feeling of being at a studio with many projects running concurrently.

FG: How much of old Hollywood was created for this film? Is the town a character in this film as well?

RD: Not the town, but the studio is a character in the film. When we went outside of the studio, we shot in parts of L.A. that were from the ’50s time period. We shot at the studio on the weekend so we could have a view of the stages and dress things as they might have been in the ’50s.

FG: Does the shooting style differ as you move through the studio and through different film sets?

RD: Yes, the style changes to reflect each kind of film that is being shot. For instance, one movie is a black-and-white movie, another a Roman epic and another is a Western. The principal story of Eddie Mannix, the character played by Josh Brolin, is the basic look of the film, but within this is the separate look of each film within the film.

FG: We’ve heard about musical and tap-dancing aspects, but will we be surprised by some of the roles this cast takes on?

I would think it will be a surprise and quite refreshing to see some of this work. The actors had fun taking on very different roles than we normally associate with them.

FG: In this film theme, you can control a lot of the lighting aspects. Did you have any artistic fun shifting from one set reality to another?

RD: Shooting the film was a lot of fun. The lighting that was used on the sets was seen in shot, so we had to be quite true to the style of lighting used in the period the film is set in, rather than what we might do today. Each of the individual ‘period’ movies within the story had a very different look, which was an interesting challenge.

FG: Did shooting on film, as opposed to digital, give this era film some warmth?

RD: Personally, I don’t believe shooting digitally would have looked much different. I shoot digital most of the time now, and I certainly don’t think it’s a step down in image quality. We went back and forth be-fore starting the movie on whether to use film or digi-tal and, in the end, chose film because of the subject as much as anything. We were shooting a film about ’50s Hollywood, and doing so on film felt right to Joel and Ethan.

In theaters February 5, 2016.
