Who is a Refugee?
A refugee is a person who is forced to leave his/her home country to seek protection from harm.

Who is an asylum seeker? Asylum seeker is a person who has fled their own
country and applied for protection as a refugee.
Who is an asylum seeker?
IDPs and Illegal migrants IDP – Internally Displaced person is a person who is
forced to leave his/her home to seek protection from harm. IDPs do not cross international borders. They are displaced in their own countries.
Illegal Migrant – Illegal migrants enter the countries with valid visa and over stay in the country even after their visas have expired.
Some facts about Refugees In early 2012, there were 15.2 million refugees around
the world.
It’s estimated that 80% of refugees are women and children.
Developing countries host 80% of the world’s refugees.
2011 saw a significant number of people seeking asylum or refugee status from countries experiencing recent or ongoing conflict or security concerns.
1951 Refugee conventionis the key legal document in defining who is a refugee, their rights and the legal obligations of states.
The Convention defines a ‘refugee’ as any person who:
... owing to well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion, is outside the country of his nationality and is unable or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail himself of the protection of that country; or who, not having a nationality and being outside the country of his former habitual residence as a result of such events, is unable or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to return to it ...
The definition of ‘refugee’ does not cover other
individuals or groups of people who leave their country only because of war or other civil disturbance, natural disasters or in order to seek a better life.
