“Improving the Post Harvest
Techniques of Non-Traditional
Agricultural Commodities”
The Ministry of Agriculture through the Guyana Marketing
Corporation continues to diversify the non-traditional agriculture
sector. As such, recognizing the importance of proper post harvest
handling and storage of produce; hence the Ministry has
introduced the “Refrigerated Trucking Service.”
The Refrigerated Trucking Service was developed to provide
farmers and exporters with the required transport for their
produce from one location to another.
The service is equipped with Six Refrigerated Trucks, which
includes;
 Three (3) two tonne
 Two (2) six tonne
 One (1) four tonne
In an effort to provide the service to as many stakeholders as
possible at the most competitive prices, GMC has lowered it rates
for usage of the Refrigerated Trucks as compared to the
commercial rates of Non – Refrigerated Trucks. GMC’s
Refrigerated Trucking Service Targets Farmers and Exporter in
Region, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 10 and is operated from Guyana
Marketing Corporation Head Office.

Importance of Transporting Fresh Produce in a Refrigerated
Truck
When produce is harvested from the parent plant it rapidly
undergoes changes such as; “biochemical changes” that will
speed up the ripening and deterioration rate and which interns
reduces the shelf life. Hence, it is important to keep the produce
cool as possible so as to as to maintain the quality, especially
when been transported. One of the recommended ways to
maintain the quality is the use of Refrigerated Trucks, which
helps in:
 Reduction of Water loss,
Reducing wilting and ripening of produce,
Reducing the growth of Micro Organisms,
Protects your Produce for Rain, Sun and Dust
