Date of Observation:: February 26 th 2013 S walked over to the highchair area where Shahara and Elizabeth (staff) were standing. I observed S lay her stomach on the adult-sized chair. She held on to both sides of the seat with her two hands and pulled herself up, still lying on her stomach with her feet up in the air Part 2 – Decision (Clearly identify the guidance strategy chosen and why the chosen strategy is appropriate for this child / situation.) The guidance strategy I will choose to use in this situation is positive wording, I-messages and redirection. The reason I feel I need to use these three strategies in combination, is because the child first needs to understand what has happened, then a clear message stating what is appropriate, and finally a new activity to divert her attention to, in order to maintain the safety of the child.

Reflective Practice Guidance Logs

Part 1 – Objective Observation(Clearly identify the problem. Examine the “context” of the problem.)

Date of Observation:: February 26th 2013

S walked over to the highchair area where Shahara and Elizabeth (staff) were standing. I observed S lay her stomach on the adult-sized chair. She held on to both sides of the seat with her two hands and pulled herself up, still lying on her stomach with her feet up in the air

Part 2 – Decision(Clearly identify the guidance strategy chosen and why the chosen strategy is

appropriate for this child / situation.)

The guidance strategy I will choose to use in this situation is positive wording, I-messages and redirection. The reason I feel I need to use these three strategies in combination, is because the child first needs to understand what has happened, then a clear message stating what is appropriate, and finally a new activity to divert her attention to, in order to maintain the safety of the child.

Part 3 – Action(Clearly discuss your actions, the child’s response and the results of the guidance strategy.)

Positive Wording & Redirection I-Messages

I got down to her level and Redirection comes into play whenI responded by saying “feet down please.” I took her hand and directed her to a I did this while placing my hand on her back chair that was safer for her. After I usedAnd guiding her feet down to the floor. Next the I-Messages and positive wording, I I decided to stand back and observe her. Close found her trying to do it again, and so Enough to supervise but far back enough that I walked up to her, and took her hand her behavior wouldn’t be affected by my presence. and said “ come sit with me.” We walked This way I would be able to see if she would away from the situation and I said “would Try again, not as a test, but to observe her you like to read a book?” she let go ofBehavior to know how effective my guidance hand as we were walking over to the Strategy was, as well as for future reference. quiet area, and took a book off the shelf.I saw look up at Elizabeth, who’s eyes were She brought it back to me, and so I sat Turned away, and then she grabbed the two sides her on my lap, and read to her. Once ourOf the seat and pulled herself up on the chair. Book had finished, she went off to play I stepped in saying “Feet down no thank you” I and forgot about the chair. I didn’t seeThen put my hands under her arms and lifted her do it again for the day.off, placing her feet on the floor. I took her handand as we walked away I said “ Our feet belong on the floor” I took her over to a child-sized chair, and said “you can sit here on you bum.” I took a seat next to her and say spontaneously. The song went “sit onyour bum-bum, sit on your bum-bum” and I bounced up and down in my seat swaying, and smiling. She did the same and laughed.

Part 4 – Reflection(Clearly discuss your strengths and needs related to this particular log entry, along with the changes

that you would make if needed.)Strengths

Doing this assignment I found strengths to be getting down to the child’s level so whatever I say has a greater impact, and so I show respect for the child. I also like my use of wording. It was appropriate for the situation, as well as the child’s development and understanding.

The song worked for a little while. I got her attention; in addition, to the fact that I remembered children learn best through song and music. It was a clear message stating what I wanted from her, and by putting it in a song, and demonstrating I was able to get her to sit.

Needs

Next time, maybe I shouldn’t wait so long to use redirection. I waited to observe her behavior, in order to get to know her zone of proximal development, when referring to communication and language. Maybe she just needed the instruction once or maybe she would need help. She could have gotten hurt, and I would have felt bad for not talking her out of the situation right away.

I think I need to be more assertive. I find myself very timid sometimes when talking to a child because I don’t want to hurt their feelings. But I have come to notice, when I am more assertive, but still positive and respectful, I get better and faster results.

Better supervision. The second time she attempted to climb the chair I caught it instantly and removed her from that area, but the third time, I had my eyes off of her. I feel the closer supervised the children are the better, because even though they are young, they are very smart, and I have observed them watch for a moment when we turn away, and then make that attempt. They are fast, but we need to be faster.

Discuss the changes that you would make and why you would make them.

Next time I might use an activity for redirection that applies to the situation, and the result that I want from the child. An example in this case would be maybe colouring. I want her to sit so by giving her an activity that requires sitting, but also gets her mind off the inappropriate action, I can praise her for her ‘good sitting’ and praise her art, the new activity.

Self-Evaluation: I thought My use of guidance strategies was good. I am getting much better at it, compared to my first few days. I still need practice, but with time, I will get better. I have learned from my mistakes, and hope to fulfill the needs I have listed before in other situations
