Talewinds April 2012 Spring is here with retail picking up and lots of you are busy with contract work which is a little odd for this time of year – however good! We are about to hit trade show season in most of your locations. Our success from these shows has been very well received and the aftermath has resulted in a ton of work. My thanks to Cam who has done an excellent job of organizing. Year-end has gone by and everyone is in the middle of inventory. The sooner you get your inventory priced and sent to administration, your hassle is over. Soon we will be starting Fort Nelson’s makeover which is way overdue. Also, Laura and I are heading to Phil’s regional meeting in Prince George at the end of this week. We are looking forward to seeing everyone. Finally, Easter is approaching and I hope everyone will find some time for themselves and family. Don’t eat too many chocolate bunnies! April 2012

Spring is here with retail picking up and lots of you are busy with contract work which is a little odd for this time of year – however good!

Finally, Easter is approaching and I hope everyone will fi nd some time for themselves and family. Don’t eat too many chocolate bunnies! Regards, Dan

If a customer is paying with a credit or interac card that has a chip and they do not know their PIN number you cannot accept their card as payment. The whole point of the chip is to protect the owner of the card from fraudulent purchases. Over riding the chip and PIN function defeats the purpose entirely. Please make sure that everyone in your store that has access to the Moneris machine is aware of this. For more info please visit www.moneris.com Sonja Dekker, Training /Operations

April is Daffodil MonthCancer is the leading cause of premature death in Canada, but there’s hope! Among Canadians diagnosed between 1996 and 1998, the fi ve year relative survival for all cancers combined was 60 per cent. The Canadian Cancer Society is a national, community-based organization of volunteers whose mission is to eradicate cancer and to enhance the quality of life of people living with cancer. The Canadian Cancer Society’s Daffodil Days campaign is more than 50 years old. During the 1950s in the Toronto area, afternoon teas were a popular way to raise funds for the Society and attract volunteers. One year, daffodils were used to decorate the tables. Soon the teas became known as Daffodil Teas and the fl ower grew to be-came the Society’s well-recognized symbol of hope.Today, the Canadian Cancer Society is the world’s largest purchaser of daffodils. Last year in Ontario alone, the Daf-fodil Days campaign raised approximately $3 million for the Canadian Cancer SocietyFunds raised during Daffodil Month help fund cancer re-search, advocate for public health policy, promote cancer prevention, provide information about cancer and support people living with cancer.

To fi nd out where you can get a daffodil pin contact your lo-cal Society offi ce or go to fi ghtback.ca.

Greg LeBlanc, Health & Safety Offi cer. Photo Above: There’s a fellow in Burns Lake named Bob Minger and we call him ‘Daffy Bob’. Every Spring he dresses up as a daffodil and walks through down-town Burns Lake, selling daffodils for the Cancer Society. He always stops at All-West Glass for a visit and sells us some daffodils while he’s here! Gail Thompson, CSR AWG Burns Lake

PHOTO LEFT: Brian Grubb and I in-stalled a new storefront at Hoskins Ford in Smithers recently. While we were there, the contractor who built the building 40+ years ago told us a story about the fi rst time he met Dan Young. Dan was working on his last Smithers storefront installa-tion job for Central Glass (Trans Canada Glass) out of Prince George at Hoskins Ford. During a lunch break Dan sat in the window opening that Brian is standing beside in the picture. He then declared to the job site crew that he liked Smithers and thought he might move here. The rest is history. We had a similar game changing moment on the job when Brian declared he was going to dedicate his life to becoming a Yoga Master - Raja Grubb.

If you could invite 5 famous people to your party and every single one of them would come, which 5 people would you have come to your party? I’d like to talk to Oprah, but if I invited the Rolling Stones they could give a mini-concert.

What cartoon character best describes you? Grumpy (bear, smurf, dwarf, etc)

If you could live anywhere in the world for a year, where would it be? Greece or Italy if I somehow magically learned the language.

If you could choose one of your personality traits to pass on to your children, what would it be? I haven’t had children yet because I’m scared they’ll have too many of my personality traits.

What would you attempt if you knew you could not fail? Play the lottery.

What is your favourite movie of all time and one that you can watch over and over again and quote lines from it? I love way too many movies to just have one favorite.

LAST MONTH’S BRAINBUSTER ANSWERS

QUALITY CORNEREarlier this month we had a healthy food potluck at admin. It was a great teambuilding event and we all enjoyed it. Greg’s bean salad was the hit of the lunch and the recipe is on the All-West Glass Facebook page if you want to try it. So far we have just over 40 LIKES on Facebook and if you have a Facebook page we would love it if you could LIKE us + LIKE the AWG Windows & Doors Facebook page also. We are not interested in snooping around at your personal pages so no need to worry about that. Who has the time?

The idea to get more LIKES is to increase our networking and engagement in order to reach more people, share our stories and become top of mind when people are thinking of windows, doors, autoglass and anything glass. Once we hit a few hundred LIKES the value of social media should kick in. Gail from Burns Lake has been great at sending in offbeat and interesting photos. Thanks Gail!

We had a big fi re down the road last week. It was just a few buildings down and the smoke permeated this building. Needless to say, we revisited our fi re safety and evacu-ation procedures. Here is a picture taken by Lee from AWG Smithers.

The CSR naming contest has been great as far as turnout and I am happy to see the comments on my blog! It’s nice to know I’m not talking to myself, which usually happens. LOL. Thanks, Tonya

Daft Dave was washing windows on a multi-storey offi ce building when he slipped and fell off his fi fty foot lad-der, directly onto the concrete pavement below. Amazingly, he didn’t hurt himself at all. How can this be possible? Answer: He fell off the very bottom rung of the ladder.

Alec, Bill and Charles, were three neigh-bouring farmers who were discussing what would happen if Alec’s peacock laid an egg in Bill’s car, whilst the car was parked on Charles’ land. All three men said that the egg would be theirs. Alec said it would be his because he owned the peacock. Bill said it would be his because it was laid in his car. Charles said it would be his because it was laid on his land. To which of the three would the egg right-fully belong? Answer: Peacocks do not lay eggs.

Winner! IGD Fort St John, BC

For Easter, the local candy store held a contest to judge the number of large Easter eggs in a bowl.

Bill guessed 35, Joe guessed 29, Ann guessed 28, Sam guessed 33 and Mike guessed 30.

One was cor-rect. One was off by 5, one by 1, one by 2 and one by 3.

Who was right?
