24th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Reflection: “Rejoice with Me, for I have Found My Sheep”

24TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - This Man Welcomes Sinners

Parents of teenagers know about mistakes being made and the need for understanding and forgiveness. It is part of the process of growing up for children to make mistakes. The real problem arises when teenagers do not feel sorry for their mistakes and want to do things their way, right or wrong. We can envision youngsters dropping out of school, being on drugs, running away from home. Although parents suffer, they are always ready to forgive; but what can they do as long as a child is recalcitrant and unwilling?

Relating this to our relationship with the heavenly Father, we often have the same situation. If we determine what is sinful, and do not go by what God thinks, we are in trouble. Sin has not disappeared! Have I given up the diligent search for perfection? Am I failing to be the kind of person I should be in God’s eyes? Am I just indifferent? Today’s Bible readings deal with God’s clemency and our willingness to admit that we were wrong as a condition for restoring a broken relationship.

God’s word to us today is clear. It is through Jesus Christ, his meritori-ous death on the cross and his constant pleading for us in heaven, that God forgives our sins. “I will … go to my (heavenly) father” - this is what the sinner should do, and God will show mercy. Jesus is still welcoming sinners! … St. Joseph Sunday Missal
