Mavis Gary, the main character in the movie “Young Adult”, is a writer of a fictional book who used the concept of Cognitive Learning in her career. According to our lesson in Social Science I – Psycholoy portion, cognitive learning means acquiring new behaviors and information through observation and information rather than experiences. In this movie, it showed that Mavis’ actions and works were based from what she observed among the people that surrounded her. Mavis imagined herself as the person in the stories that she heard from adolescents. In that manner, that is how she acted. She drinks a lot and does useless things in her life. Even though she is already in the 30’s, she really acted like a teenager. She acted worse when she knew that Buddy, her high school boyfriend, and her wife just had a baby. She decided to go back to her hometown and get what was really for her. Mavis wanted to get Buddy back and save him from a trapped life of having a family. It is obvious that Mavis had a mind of a teenager because she doesn’t know the real meaning of becoming an adult. At the near end part of the movie, Mavis was turned down by Buddy when she confessed her love for him. She was even humiliated in front of many people. It is really obvious that Beth, Buddy’s wife, has an attitude of a real adult as compared to Mavis. It was also shown in the movie that Sandra, Matt’s sister, admires her a lot. She lived in a world wherein she applies what she hears from the people around her and she indirectly experienced it through others.
