Reflecting on Graduation from High School

It has been 30 years since I walked out of the gates of high school at Kafue Secondary

School in December 1985 !hen I was a young teen at 1" years old #ith so much ho$e

for the future in terms of education and all% I had dreams of $ursuing a career in Science

but through &od's $ro(idence my career $ath was in )ducation after I went to do a

*achelors degree in )ducation at the +ni(ersity of ,ambia- ma.oring in /athematics and

doing a minor in om$uter Studies So then what are my thoughts of my days at

secondary school that culminated in my graduation from Kafue Secondary School with a

    motto 2itiens of !wo Kingdoms4

Firstly, my entry into form 1 at Kafue Secondary School in 1981 was marked with some

an6iety 7or the first time- I would ha(e to s$end at least three months away from my

$arents and siblings #ould I co$e /ind you in those days- mockery at boarding schools

was a gi(en #ould I be mocked and bullied in such a way that I would fail to stay on at boarding school !hankfully- a form by the name of /usonda Kabemba liked me and

became my $rotector% e was a cadet and so the other form 's could not mess around

with me :ff course- I had to show a$$reciation- so when my dad brought me some

su$$lies such as well $re$ared beef and chicken I shared with him ;inside and outside< including

classrooms Interestingly- most boys did not like to be assigned to clean the toilets !hey

used them but didn't want to clean them /mm

Secondly, the $ositi(e influence of religion at Kafue *oys cannot be missed :ur school

being a mission school run by the +nited hurch of ,ambia- we had to ha(e bible

    readings and $rayers daily e6ce$t Saturday's :n /ondays- #ednesdays and !hursdays

these were held in the School ha$el :n !uesdays we had de(otions in our res$ecti(e

classes :n 7ridays we had them in our (arious houses In addition- ?eligious )ducation

    >?)< was com$ulsory in all classes :ne of my close friends- hristian became a

hristian after our *ible Knowledge teacher- arol )athorne- made an a$$eal to students

to not only ac=uire head knowledge of the *ible but gi(e their li(es to hrist I became a

hristian after listening to a (isiting $reacher @oe Imakando $reach on the necessity of

*eing *orn Again from @ohn 3 !o &od be the glory lubs such as Scri$ture +nion

    >which I was acti(ely in(ol(ed in

was one of the to$ $erforming schools in ,ambia I recall in 1985 when we were about to

sit for our School ertificate e6ams and being asked by one of our teachers if we would

do (ery well :ur res$onse was that doing (ery well was guaranteed *eating ?oma &irls

in Cusaka was our goal And that goal was achie(ed% Kafue *oys had among the best

teachers in ,ambia with a balanced combination of local and international teachers

mostly from church missionary organisations !he teachers were committed to their .obs

and us as $u$ils inside and outside the classroom #hether they were $erforming the role

of teacher- house $arent- form teacher- $reacher etc they $ut in their best !hey ensured

we were ade=uately $re$ared for our e6aminations and in a s$iritual sense for the 7inal

)6amination% Some of the teachers I recall who had a $ositi(e influence on me were /r

    Da(id &rogan- /r !om /arshall- /iss @una Siafwa- /rs arol )athorne- /r Ste$hen

#inter- /r Derryck :rridge- /rs Siluyele to mention .ust a few

30 years on% Kafue Secondary School- o$ened in 19 as a Secondary School- is still

standing and contributing to the )ducation Agenda in ,ambia I thank &od for enablingme $ass through the doors of that school I thank &od for the many lessons I learnt there
