1. Trips and falls. Many parts of the ship will be obstructed by machinery, cables, wires and debris. You must watch your step and never run or jump. Walk slowly and deliberately.
The period whilst a ship is in dry dock or refit is particularly hazardous for those living or working on board. You must be aware of the following:
2. Areas of the ship may be in temporary or long-term darkness. Do not walk into unlighted areas without a torch. There may be some obstruction or other source of danger.
3. Unless you have work there, do not go into the dry dock. It is a dangerous place with work taking place overhead and the dock floor is slippery and wet in many places. If you do have to go into the dock you must wear safety boots/shoes and a safety helmet.
4. The dockside is a busy area with many obstructions, moving traffic and cranes. Take great care when going ashore through the dockyard and move away from the immediate shipside work area as quickly as possible. Wear suitable footwear, do not walk through the dockyard in flimsy shoes or flip flops. High heels can be dangerous, therefore you must take particular care if going ashore in the evening so dressed.

5. Do not walk under objects being lifted by crane and keep clear of any lifting operation unless you are involved.
6. Trips and falls. Many parts of the ship will be obstructed by machinery, cables, wires and debris. You must watch your step and never run or jump. Walk slowly and deliberately.
7. Opportunities for fires are significant during refit due to the welding and cutting operations which take place. Report any fires or smoke immediately. Do not allow debris to accumulate which might fuel a fire.
8. Temporary electric cables are also a fire risk as they can become frayed or damaged where passing through doorways or around sharp corners. Be vigilant for any such defects and report them.
9. Other dry-dock operations which can be hazardous and from which you must keep clear of include High pressure water washing, Shot blasting, Paint spraying, Paint fumes and enclosed spaces containing fumes or other gases.
10. Scaffolding and staging. Do not climb on these unless your work requires it.

12. Do not enter areas that have been barriered to prevent entry. These areas may be restricted for safety reasons or to protect work and/or materials.
11. Returning to the ship in the hours of darkness can be hazardous. Great care must be taken to keep to properly lit, designated walkways. DO NOT TAKE SHORT CUTS THROUGH UNLIT AREAS.
