    Professional Advice

To begin the reference transaction, my professional reference librarian suggested a few

uestions to as! to clarify the reference inuiry of a fourth grade teacher wanting to meet "ommon

"ore Standard ""#$#%#& 'Te(t Types and Purposes) %rite opinion pieces on topics or te(ts,

supporting a point of view with reasons and information*# She would first clarify that the patron was a

+ew or! State teacher# Secondly, she would clarify whether they wanted articles for their students to

use in class regarding this topic or whether they needed actual lesson plans to implement# inally,

before commencing her search, she would clarify what format of resources the patron would find most

useful# .n the advice she gave me, she assumed the patron was not loo!ing for articles or other student

resources but instead full lesson plans to use in class#

or actual sources, she suggested primarily internet based resources# To begin with, she

suggested+/ngagewhich is a website designed to support and aid educators in teaching towards the

"ommon "ore# To this end, the +ew or! State /ducation Department designed a series of learningmodules for 0-&1 in /nglish 2anguage Arts and 3athematics that covers the full year of curricular

content and corresponding standards# .n this case, there is specifically a series of modules outlining

the entire fourth grade school year for /nglish 2anguage Arts that meet the necessary and

corresponding "ommon "ore Standards, thereby including standard ""#$#%#

She also suggested Share3y2esson,a website in which educators can share their own personal

resources, strategies, activities and lesson plans for meeting various "ommon "ore Standards# The

website is easy to navigate to the particular standard you are concerned with as you can select

'Teaching 4esources,* '5rade 6-7,* '/nglish 2anguage Arts,* and finally the related "ommon "ore

Standard area, in this case, '%riting*# rom there, you are given a list of educator contributions, which

can be limited by newest and recommended# ou can also see the most popular resources, indicated

beside the result title# Additionally, the results can be further limited by sub topic in which you can

select '8pinion Pieces* and conseuently see the &9: results relating to this topic area and standard#

inally, she suggested the+ State Department of /ducationas a final web based resource#

Similar to the previous source, you can limit the resources within this site to the particular standard

you are concerned with through the bo( on the left side of the screen# %ithin it, you can limit to '$th

5rade,* '/nglish 2anguage Arts;2iteracy,* and finally, to the particular standard you are interested in

if you wish# The results then offer unit plans, performance tas!s, and even rubrics for grading#

2astly, she also suggested a human resource) the /2A coach she !nows, from professional

    e(perience, each school typically has#

To conclude the reference transaction, she would show the patron the resources she found in

this initial search and see if they were what the patron needed# .f they were not, she would as! whythey were not and then ad
