Viewfinder indications

1 Orange lamp (P. 72, 84)● In some situations, this lamp lights up when you press the shutter button

halfway. This indicates that the flash will then fire when the picture istaken.

● Blinks if the flash is required and the flash is turned off.● When this lamp blinks just after you change from the flash override

mode to another mode or after you shoot with the flash, it means thatthe flash is recharging. Wait until the lamp stops blinking, then press theshutter button.

2 Green lamp (P. 72)● When you press the shutter button down halfway to lock focus and

exposure, this lamp lights. If the subject is out of focus, the lamp blinks.● Blinks when there is a problem with the card.

How to use this manual

The instructions in this manual use a series of numbers for each operatingprocedure and button/dial illustration. Follow these numbers in order whenoperating the camera.

1 In the top menu, select MODE MENU T CAMERA T FULLTIME AF TON.

2 Turn on the monitor (P. 74).● If the monitor is not on, Fulltime AF does not function.

FULLTIME AF keeps the image on the monitor in focus at all times, withouthaving to press the shutter button halfway. This function reduces focusingtime. When OFF is selected, images cannot be focused unless the shutterbutton is pressed halfway.

FULLTIME AF — A reliable time-saving way to focus

● If (for movies) is set to OFF, the camera will adjust the focus andexposure as needed during movie recording, regardless of the Fulltime AFsetting.

● Battery life is shorter when Fulltime AF is used.

Getting startedBefore using the camera, you should

follow the steps outlined in thischapter.

Loosen the strap in thestopper beforehand toadjust the strap length.

Thread the strap throughthe stopper as indicated bythe arrows. When the straplength is satisfactory, pullon the strap to make sure itis securely fastened.

Pull the string loop throughthe hole in the lens cap.

● Always put the camera in its case when carrying it.● Be careful with the strap when you carry the camera, as it can easily catch

on stray objects, causing serious damage.● Attach the strap correctly as shown so that the camera does not fall off. If

the strap is attached incorrectly and the camera falls off, Olympus is notresponsible for any damages.

Put the strap through thestring loop.

r 1This camera uses 2 CR-V3 lithium battery packs or 4 AA (R6) NiMH batteries,

NiCd batteries, alkaline batteries or lithium batteries.

Important:● CR-V3 lithium battery packs cannot be charged.● Do not peel the label on a CR-V3 lithium battery pack. If an insulating sheet

covers the terminals, peel it off ONLY from the terminals.

Make sure the camera is turnedoff (i.e. the mode dial is set toOFF).

● If the terminals inside the battery compartment are dirty, it will noticeablyshorten the life of the batteries. Do not touch the inside of the batterycompartment.

● If the camera is left for 1 hour with the batteries removed, all the internalsettings will revert to the default settings.

● After taking a picture or when turning on the power with batteries thatare running low, the camera may emit several short beeps and thenumber of storable pictures will blink. If this happens, the picture justtaken will not turn out properly. Replace the batteries and take thepicture again.

When remaining battery power is low, the battery check indication on thecontrol panel changes as follows:

TIPS

● When there is insufficient space remaining, the camera beeps and CARDFULL appears on the monitor. If this happens, replace the card with anew/storable card or erase unwanted pictures in the existing card to makespace.

Shooting mode setting — Mode dial

Set the mode dial to P, A/S/M or .● The camera turns on. Since the lens automatically

extrudes when the camera is turned on, take off thelens cap first.

● When the camera mode is set to A/S/M or , themonitor turns on automatically.

Program shooting

The simplest way to take still pictures. The camera sets aperture and shutterspeed.

Aperture priority/Shutter priority/Manual shooting

Allows you to set aperture and/or shutter speed manually. When the modedial is set to A/S/M, the following items can be set with the menus:

A (Aperture priority shooting)Allows you to set the aperture manually. The camera sets the shutter speedautomatically. By decreasing the aperture value (F value), you will force thecamera to focus within a smaller range, producing a picture with a blurredbackground. Increasing the value forces the camera to focus over a widerrange in the forward/backward directions, resulting in a picture in which boththe subject and the background are in focus.Aperture setting T P. 61

Movie record

Allows you to record movies. The camera sets the aperture and shutter speedautomatically. Even if the subject moves during recording or the distance tothe subject changes, correct focusing and exposure are maintainedcontinuously.When (for movies) is set to ON (P. 101), focus and exposure are lockedfrom the beginning of the movie.

Setting the shutter speed higher lets youcapture fast-moving action without blur. Thesubject will be clear and sharp, as if notmoving.

Setting the shutter speed lower blurs amoving subject, giving the impression ofmovement.

● Press the shutter button gently using the ball of your finger. If it is pressedhard, the camera may move and pictures may come out blurred.

● Recorded pictures will be saved in the card regardless of whether thecamera is turned off or the batteries are replaced or removed.

● NEVER open the card cover, eject the card, remove the batteries, or pullthe plug when the card access lamp is blinking. Doing so could destroystored pictures and prevent storage of pictures you have just taken.

With the monitor, you can shoot while checking the picture area that thecamera actually records. It is also possible to check information such asmemory gauge, aperture or shutter speed, etc.

The flash does not fire even in low-light conditions. Use this mode insituations where flash photography is not desired or is prohibited, or whenyou want to shoot a natural-looking twilight or night scene.

� SLOW1:1st curtain (front curtain)Usually, regardless of the shutter speed, the flash fires right after the shutterfully opens. This is called 1st curtain. Unless you change it, this is how theflash always fires.

Flash off

● Since a slow shutter speed is automatically selected in low-light situationswhen in the flash off mode, the use of a tripod is recommended to preventyour pictures from being blurred by camera movement.

The Slow Synchronization flash is designed for slow shutter speeds.Normally, when shooting with a flash, shutter speeds cannot go below acertain level to prevent camera movement. But when shooting a night scenebackground, fast shutter speeds can make the background too dark. SlowSynchronization flash allows both a slow shutter speed for the backgroundand a flash for the subject.

Under some conditions, you may obtain better results shooting with exposurecompensation than by using the exposure setting considered optimal by thecamera. When Auto bracket is set, exposure is changed automatically foreach frame when you start shooting. The exposure differential can beselected in the menus. AE lock — Locking the exposureSuitable for situations when optimal exposure is difficult to achieve (such asexcessive contrast between the subject and the surroundings). For example,if the sun is in the frame and shooting with automatic exposure results in adark subject, re-compose your shot so that the sun is not in the frame. Then,press the button to lock the metered value (exposure) temporarily.Then compose your shot again with the sun in the frame and shoot. In otherwords, use AE lock when you want an exposure setting that's different fromthe setting that would normally apply to the image you want to shoot.

Macro mode shooting — Taking close-up pictures

Allows you to shoot close to the subject (no closer than 0.2 m (0.6 ft)) so thatyou can fill the entire frame with your subject while the zoom lever is pressedto the maximum W position.If the center of the frame (within the AF target mark) is metered when you areclose to the subject and you shoot with the optimal exposure, the picture willturn out well (Spot metering+Macro mode). Description

The highest-quality mode. Images are saved asuncompressed data, which is the best for printing orimage-processing on a computer. This mode hasdifferent resolutions to choose from, depending onhow it is used.

A high quality mode using the JPEG format.Because the compression rate is very low, highquality images can be stored. In addition, you canincrease the resolution with the Enlarge Sizefunction. This is useful when printing on large papersuch as A3 (11" x 14").

● ResolutionThe number of pixels (vertical x horizontal) used when saving an image.If the image will be printed, higher resolutions (larger numbers) arerecommended so that the image will be clearer. ● Resolution and picture size on a computer screenWhen a picture is transferred to a computer, the size of the picture on thecomputer screen varies depending on the computer's monitor setting.For instance, a picture taken in 640 x 480 resolution is the same size asthe screen if you set the picture to 1x when the monitor setting is 640 x480. AUTO : Sensitivity is automatically adjusted according to the lighting conditions and the subject brightness.

100/200/400 : 100 is best when you want to shoot clear, sharp images indaylight. With a higher ISO setting, you can use faster shutter speeds with the same amount of light.

Noise ReductionChapte

r 6 This function reduces the noise that appears on images during long

exposures. When shooting night scenes, shutter speeds become slower andnoise tends to appear on images. When noise reduction is set to ON, thecamera automatically reduces noise to produce clearer images. However,shooting time is approximately twice as long as usual.Noise reduction can only be used when the shutter speed is set slower than1/2 sec.

Playing Back Still Pictures

1 Set the mode dial to (playback).● The monitor turns on and displays the last picture taken.

Slide-Show

This function displays pictures from the card one after another, as if you arewatching a slide-show. Sound is also played back if it is attached to a picture.However, the camera must be connected to a TV in order to hear the sound.Movies are played back like still pictures, starting from the first frame.

● The next picture is not displayed until the sound playback of the previouspicture ends. However, this sound playback cannot be heard unless thecamera is connected to a TV.

● Use of the AC adapter (optional) is recommended when running the slide-show for long periods of time. If batteries are being used, the camera willend the slide-show after about 30 minutes and enter sleep mode.

● The slide-show will not stop until you cancel it by pressing .

TIPS

Pictures displayed on the monitor can be enlarged. Each time you turn thezoom lever towards T, pictures are enlarged by 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5 or 4 times.

1 With the arrow pad, select the picture you want to enlarge. ● Pictures with the mark cannot be enlarged.

2 Turn the zoom lever toward T ( ).● When a picture is enlarged, ß/å/˙/¥ are displayed. Press the arrow

Index Display

This function lets you show many pictures at the same time on the monitor. Itis useful for comparing your pictures and choosing the best ones. Thenumber of pictures shown can be 4, 9, or 16 (see the next page).

Adding Sound

Sound can be added to still pictures after you take them. You can alsochange sound that has already been recorded. Recording sound takesapprox. 4 seconds for each picture.

1 Select a still picture to add sound to by using the arrow pad. ● Sound cannot be added to pictures with the mark.

2 In the top menu, select MODE MENU T PLAY T .

3 Press í to display START.

4 Point the camera microphone towards the subject, then press tostart recording.● A bar is displayed to show the progress of recording.

● To obtain the optimum sound, the microphone should be placed no furtherthan 1m (3.3 ft) away from the subject.

● When a new sound is recorded, the original sound is erased.● function is not available when the card is protected or when “ CARD

Erasing Pictures

Recorded pictures can also be erased. This can be done either one frame ata time or to all the pictures in the card.

● Pictures in a card with a write-protect seal cannot be erased.● Once erased, pictures cannot be brought back.

1 Select a picture you wish to erase by using the arrow pad.● If the picture is protected, cancel the protection (P. 129).

2 Press the (erase) button.● The ERASE screen is displayed.

3 Press Ñ to select YES.

4 Press to erase the picture.

Formatting Cards

Cards must be formatted. Formatting prepares cards to receive data.Olympus CAMEDIA-brand cards are highly recommended. If you are going touse non-OLYMPUS cards or cards formatted by other devices such as acomputer, you must format them with the camera before use. Cards can beformatted in all mode dial positions.

Playback on a TV

With the provided AV cable, recorded images and sound can be played backon a TV.

1 Make sure that the TV and camera power are off .

2 Connect the camera to the TV using the AV cable.

3 Set the mode dial to and turn on the TV. Switch the TV to videoinput.● For details on switching to video input, refer to your TV's instruction

manual.

4 Select an image by using the arrow pad.● The selected image will be displayed on the TV.

Connect to the TV's video input (yellow)and audio input (white) terminals.

● The optional AC adapter is recommended when using the camerawith a TV.

● Images can be rotated only when they are played back on a TV. Seethe next page for details.

● The image may appear off-center on the TV screen. This is due to the TV'sadjustment settings.

There may be times when you want to rotate a picture. For example, picturestaken with the camera held vertically are also oriented vertically (i.e. longervertically than horizontally). Self-Timer Shooting

This function is useful for taking pictures that the shooter wants to be in too.This can also be done with remote-control shooting.

1 Use a tripod to stabilize the camera.

2 In the top menu, select MODE MENUT CAMERA T DRIVE T , thenpress (in the mode,select MODE MENU T CAMERA T

T ON, then press ).

Beep

You can choose if the image being recorded is displayed on the monitorduring shooting.

� ONThe image being recorded onto the card is displayed on the monitor. This isuseful for a brief check of images you have just taken. Pressing the shutterbutton halfway at any time displays the image the camera is currently aimed at.� OFFThe image being recorded onto the card is not displayed. If you shoot whileusing the monitor, the subject the camera is pointing at will be displayed. Thisis useful when you want to prepare your next shot while the previous image isbeing recorded.

In the top menu, select MODE MENU T SETUP T REC VIEW T ON orOFF.

● If you shoot with the monitor off and battery power is too low, Rec View isnot available.

File Name

The camera automatically creates file names and folder names for images tobe stored in. Files can be numbered from 0001 to 9999 and folders can benumbered from 100 to 999. Examples are shown below.

● Month: Jan. - Sep. = 1 - 9, Oct. = A, Nov. = B, Dec. = C

There are two choices here: RESET or AUTO. Choose the one that is best foryou when transferring images to a computer.

� RESETWhen RESET is selected, the file number and folder number are reset everytime a new card is inserted in the camera. The folder number returns to No.100, and the file number returns to No. 0001. This is useful when groupingfiles on separate cards.� AUTOWhen AUTO is selected, the same folder number is retained, but the filenumber continues from the previous card, so that the same file number is notused on different cards. This helps you to manage multiple cards. This isuseful when a group of files stretches over more than one card.

1 In the top menu, select MODE MENUT SETUP T FILE NAME.● The FILE NAME setting screen appears.

● When the File No. reaches 9999...The file number returns to 0001, and the folder number changes, forexample, from No. 100 to No. 101.

● When the both Folder/File No. reach each maximum number(999/9999)...The number of storable pictures becomes 0, even if the card is not fullyet. No more pictures can be taken.

Pixel Mapping

The Pixel Mapping feature allows the camera to check a CCD and imageprocessing circuit automatically. It is not necessary to operate this functionfrequently. Approximately once a year is recommended. Wait a few minutesafter the monitor is used or continuous shots are taken to allow for properperformance of the Pixel Mapping function.

How to print pictures

r 9When you want to print out pictures that you have taken with this camera and

stored on a card, perform Print Reserve (P. 153 – 158). Print Reserve allowsyou to save printing data (number of prints, date printed on pictures, etc.) withthe pictures stored on the card. Several different printing options areavailable:

� Printing at a photo lab that supports DPOF or printing on a DPOFcompatible printerWhat is DPOF? DPOF is short for Digital Print Order Format. DPOF is a format used torecord automatic print information from cameras. By specifying whichimages are to be printed, the images can be printed easily by DPOF-compatible printing service labs or a personal DPOF-compatible printer.

� Printing on an Olympus CAMEDIA P-400, P-330N(E) or P-200 digitalprinterIf you insert a card with Print Reserve data into the printer, printing ispossible without using a computer. For more details, refer to the printer’sinstructions.

� Transferring pictures to a computer (P. 161 – 173) and printing themfrom a printer connected to the computerAlso refer to the application software's instructions.

● Picture size and printingThe resolution of a computer/printer is generally based on the number ofdots (pixels) per square inch. This is called “dpi” (dots per inch). Thehigher the dpi value, the higher the resolution, and the better the printedresults. Keep in mind, however, that the dpi of the picture you want toprint does not change to match the printer resolution. This means thatwhen you print an image with a lower resolution than the printer, the sizeof the printed picture will be smaller. Although you can print magnifiedimages, picture quality will decrease. If you want to be able to print large,high-quality pictures, set the picture size in the camera as high aspossible (higher record mode) (P. 103).

● Images taken with this camera can also be printed using a printer or at aphoto lab that supports the Design rule for Camera File system/DCF.

● DPOF reservations set by another device cannot be changed by thiscamera. Make changes using the original device.

● If a card contains DPOF reservations set by another device, enteringreservations using this camera may overwrite the previous reservations.

● Even if an image appears with the message “PICTURE ERROR”, Printreserve may be performed on it. In such a case, the print reserve icon ( )does not appear where an image is displayed for full view. Since appearswhere multiple images are displayed (index-display mode), it is possible toconfirm the print reserve status.

● This camera cannot be directly connected to printers such as the OlympusP-300 digital printer.

● Not all functions may be available on all printers or at all photo labs.● If you are printing using the P-330N(E) , only the first 999 images can be

printed.● Print reserve may take considerable time in some cases.● Print reserve cannot be done when using a card with a write-protect seal.

● When connecting the camera to a computer, make sure that the remainingbattery power is sufficient. When connected (transmitting) to a computer,the camera does not enter the Sleep (power save) mode nor will thecamera’s power turn off automatically. If the battery power runs out whilethe computer is reading data from the card loaded in the camera, thecamera stops operating and downloaded image data (file) will be lost. Usethe AC adapter (optional) when downloading files.

● Make sure that the camera's power is off before connecting the AC adapter.● Before removing the AC adapter, disconnect the camera from the computer,

and make sure that the camera's power is off.● To avoid computer malfunctions, do not turn off the camera or switch the

camera’s mode dial position when the camera is connected to a personalcomputer.

● If the camera is connected to the personal computer via a USB hub,operation may not be stable if there are any compatibility problems betweenthe personal computer and the hub. In such a case, do not use a hub andconnect the camera directly to the personal computer.

● To play back movies, the personal computer should have QuickTimeinstalled on it.

To connect the camera to a personal computer, use the USB cable(provided).

Transferring images to a computer — Downloading

If the camera is connected correctly to a personal computer, the card isrecognized as a drive (usually “Removable Disk”) on a personal computer.When using a Macintosh, the card is displayed as a new drive (Untitled) onthe desktop.Images stored on the card can be treated the same way as files on a floppy-disk or MO (magneto-optical disk) using software such as Windows Explorer.

● If you want to use CAMEDIA Master software, version 2.5 or higher isrequired.

● When using CAMEDIA Master software, click on “Removable Disk”, not “MyCamera”. Under Mac OS, the file name is “Untitled”.

1 Referring to “How to connect” (P. 162), connect the camera to yourcomputer. ● The card loaded in the camera is recognized as a folder on the personal

computer.

2 From the desktop, click the “My Computer” icon.

5 Copy (download) the image files to your computer using Mac OS.● When moving or copying a file, be sure to follow any instructions

You can view images using: graphics applications that support JPEG(Paint Shop Pro, Photoshop, etc.); Internet browsers (NetscapeCommunicator, Microsoft Internet Explorer, etc.); CAMEDIA Mastersoftware; or other software. For details on using commercialgraphics applications, refer to their instruction manuals. When usinggraphics applications, make sure that the images are completelytransferred to the computer. The images (files) may be damaged ifthey are processed (e.g. rotated, etc.) by some graphics applicationswhile still in the card.

r 11 Using the FL-40 external flash

Various types of flash shooting are possible with the FL-40 external flash,which can be used either by itself or together with the main flash.If the FL-40 is used, flash mode and exposure compensation will be detectedautomatically by the camera, allowing the main flash and external flash tofunction together.Using the two flashes together allows for more sophisticated lighting, such ascatch lighting.To connect the FL-40 to the camera, the exclusive FL-BK01 flash bracket(optional) and FL-CB01 bracket cable (optional) are required.

1 Mount the FL-40 external flash on theflash bracket, then fasten it to thecamera’s tripod socket and connectthe flash bracket and the camera’s 5-pin external flash socket using thebracket cable.● Refer to each separate instruction

manual for the external flash, flashbracket, and flash cable.

● The 5-pin external flash socket cover onthe camera is threaded. Unscrew andremove it before connecting the bracketcable.

Using commercially available external flashes

1 Mount an external flash on the flashbracket, then fasten it to the camera'stripod socket and connect the flashbracket and the camera's 5-pinexternal flash socket using the bracketcable.

2 In the top menu, select MODE MENUT CAMERA T A/S/M T M. Press .Adjust the shutter speed and theaperture.● Remember that a slow shutter speed

can produce blurred images. For thebest results, we recommend that youset the shutter speed from 1/200 to1/300 seconds.

3 Turn on the external flash.

r 11Compatible commercially available external flashes

When selecting an external flash, use products which meet thefollowing basic conditions.(1) Some flashes available on the market operate with a high voltage synchro

terminal. If one of these is used, it may not function normally. Contact themanufacturer of the flash you are using concerning the specifications ofthe flash's synchro terminal.

(2) Some flashes available on the market have the polarity of the synchroterminal reversed. In this case, even if the flash is connected, it will notfire. Contact the manufacturer of the flash for more information.

(3) Exposures when using an external flash require that adjustments bemade on the external flash unit.If an external flash is used in the Auto mode, match it with the F value andISO sensitivity settings on the camera.

(4) Even if the auto F value and ISO sensitivity of the external flash are set tothe same conditions as those on the camera, depending on thephotographic conditions, it is possible that the correct exposure may notbe obtained anyway. In such a case, adjust the auto F value or ISO valueon external flash unit or calculate the distance in the manual mode anduse it that way. However, generally, the auto F value and ISO value canonly be adjusted 1 step and beyond that, exposure compensation cannotbe made. (Exposure compensation in the camera is made invalid inexternal flash photography.)

(5) Use a flash which is capable of covering an illumination angle for a 35 mmor larger lens when calculated for 35 mm film. However, in close-upphotography with the lens on the wide setting, the bottom of the imagemay not expose correctly. The ideal is to have a wide angle adapter to fiton the flash and spread the illumination angle so it is wider.

(6) Use a flash unit with a flash time of 1/200 sec. or less when using theflash at full strength. For devices with a long flash time, such as a ringflash, a portion of the light emitted will not contribute to the exposure.

(7) If a flash unit or other accessory with additional communicationsfunctions other than the FL-40 is used, it may not only fail tofunction normally, but may also cause damage to the camera’scircuitry. Do not use such a device.

Glossary of terms

A (Aperture Priority) ModeYou set the aperture yourself andthe camera automatically variesthe shutter speed so that thepicture is taken with the bestexposure.

AE (Automatic Exposure)The camera's built-in exposuremeter automatically sets theexposure. The 3 AE modesavailable on this camera are Pmode, in which the camera selectsboth the aperture and shutterspeed, A mode, in which the userselects the aperture and thecamera sets the shutter speed,and S mode, in which the userselects the shutter speed and thecamera sets the aperture. In Mmode, the user selects both theaperture and the shutter speed.

ApertureThis adjusts the amount of lightthat passes through the lens.Lower values allow more light topass, while higher values lessenthe amount of light. When you setthe lowest aperture value for alens, the aperture is at its widest.Conversely, the highest aperturevalue gives the narrowestaperture.

BacklightA light source in the Monitor to let itbe seen more easily.

CCD (Charge-coupled Device)This converts light passing throughthe lens into electrical signals. Onthis camera, light is picked up at4,13 million points and convertedinto RGB signals to build a singleimage.

Contrast Detection MethodThis is used to measure thedistance to the subject. Thecamera determines if the image isfocused by the level of contrast inthe subject.

Conventional PhotographThis refers to recording imagesusing silver halide (the method forrecording images in conventional,non-digital photography.) Thissystem is in contrast to still videoand digital photography.

Format)This is for saving desired printsettings on digital cameras. Byentering which images to print andthe number of copies of each, theuser can automatically have thedesired images printed by a printeror print lab that supports the DPOFformat.

Eclipsing (Vignetting) This refers to when an objectobscures part of the field of viewso that the whole subject is notphotographed. Vignetting alsorefers to when the image seenthrough the viewfinder does notexactly match the image shotthrough the objective lens, so thephotographed image includesobjects not seen through theviewfinder. In addition, vignettingcan occur when an incorrect lenshood is used, causing shadowingto appear in the corners of theimage.

EV (Exposure Value)A system for measuring exposure.EV0 is when the aperture is at F1and the shutter speed is 1 second.The EV then increases by 1 eachtime the aperture increases by oneF stop or the shutter speedincreases by one increment. EVcan also be used to indicatebrightness and ISO settings.

ExposureThe amount of l ight used tocapture an image. The exposure isdetermined by the time the shutteris open (shutter speed) and theamount of l ight that passesthrough the lens (aperture).

Flash BracketA mount used to attach an externalflash to the camera.

ISOA method for indicating film speedby the International Organizationfor Standardization (ISO) (e.g."ISO100"). Higher ISO valuesindicate greater sensitivity to light,so images can be exposed even inlow-light conditions.

JPEG (Joint PhotographicExperts Group)A compression format for color stillimages. Photographs (images)shot using this camera arerecorded onto the SmartMediacard in JPEG format when theRecord mode is set to SHQ, HQ orSQ. By downloading these imagesto a personal computer, users canedit them using graphicsapplication software or view theimages using an Internet webbrowser.
