Learning Goals: 1. I can explain how tidal waves are

generated. 2. I can differentiate between the various

types of tides. 3. I can describe an intertidal habitat.

Tidal Generated Waves: The gravitational pull from the Sun

and Moon causes high and low tides Moon has a greater influence

because it is closer to Earth

Tides differ around the world:One high tide and one low tide each

day = Diurnal Two two high tides and two low

tides each day = Semi-diurnal

Spring and Neap Tides: Spring Tides: occur when the Sun, Moon,

and Earth are in a straight line Occurs at new and full moons Have the greatest effect on tides

Neap Tides: occur when the Sun, Moon, and Earth make a right angle Occurs at first and third quarter moons

Extreme Tides:Bay of Fundy- Nova Scotia, Canada

Largest tidal range in the worldApproximately 48-55 ft (FL is about 4 ft)

Tidal Bores:Occur when incoming tides produce a wave

that flows into a narrow area (river, bay) Only occur in a few places around the world

Intertidal Habitat:“Tide Pools”

Covered with water during high tide, and exposed to air during low tide

Must adapt to harsh conditions like waves & drying out
