Nanotechnology At Its Epitome

EVAPORATIVE CONDENSER - EFFICIENT ENERGY SAVING DEVICE & ITS CHALLENGES

Evapora�ve Cooling is a process of heat

and mass transfer based on the conversion of sensible heat to latent heat.

Evapora�ve Condenser is an ideal replacement of tradi�onal Indirect system having a primary circuit with plate heat-e x c h a n g e r i n t h e refrigera�on cycle. The tradi�onal system has two circuits. In the primary circuit return r e f r i g e r a n t i s condensed in a plate heat-exchanger and in the secondary circuit a O p e n l o o p c o o l i n g t o w e r c o o l s t h e circula�ng water inside

the plate heat exchanger by virtue of evapora�ve cooling. Opera�ng the secondary system entails addi�onal piping, addi�onal pumping and addi�onal maintenance ac�vi�es. Some major challenges of the tradi�onal systems are -

Ÿ Plate heat exchangers are characterized by higher pressure drops, this translates to higher power consump�on for the pumping

Ÿ Plate heat exchangers are prone to choking due to smaller channel widths and require frequent cleaning. This issue is even more pronounced when opera�ng with Open loop cooling towers as the water being circulated is bound to have small debris and dissolved salts in higher concentra�on which leads to scaling.

0Ÿ Almost 2 C approach is lost to allow for Heat transfer in

the Plate heat exchanger.

Ÿ Larger installa�on footprint to accommodate the components of the secondary circuit.

Evapora�ve condenser is an easy single point solu�on to all the above challenges. An Evapora�ve condenser is compact, easy to operate and be�er in performance. It replaces the plate heat exchanger + Cooling tower configura�on with a tubular heat exchanger integrated in an evapora�ve cooling system . The advantages include -

Ÿ Easier maintenance - Scaling, if any, deposits only on the outside surface of the tube which is easily accessible and

can be cleaned regularly without much effort and minimum down�me.

Ÿ Lower opera�ng costs - Lesser power consump�on due to elimina�on of secondary circuit pumping requirement which is normally characterized by higher pressure losses.

Ÿ Be�er approach to wet bulb temperature and lower installa�on footprint.

The performance of Evapora�ve condenser is directly associated with wet bulb temperature of geographical loca�on and the circula�ng water quality parameters. Cooling Technology Ins�tute , USA & ASHRAE Standard 64 have provided guidelines for measurement of performance and acceptance of the equipment .

However, Evapora�ve condensers can also have some challenges due to poor maintenance and improper loca�on of installa�on . Certain points need to be taken care of while selec�ng or maintaining an Evapora�ve condenser to ensure trouble free and smooth opera�on -

Ÿ Water quality is a major reason for degraded performance. Good quality circula�ng water means Dissolved Solids limited to 100 ppm and suspended solid/debris limited to less than 30ppm (100 if no biological ac�vity )with negligible salinity in circula�ng water .

Ÿ pH needs to be maintained in the range of 6.5 to 8.0 , very low pH can be corrosive to metal and high pH can lead to scaling in the system . Cycles of concentra�on allowed for make-up should be decided using above parameters.

Ÿ Selec�on of water treatment scheme should be based on the selected metallurgy of Tube bundle and casing. For poorer quality water, Materials with higher corrosion resistance should be selected.

Ÿ Advanced materials like FRP , Pultruded FRP sec�on and higher grade stainless steel can be used to increase the life of the Evapora�ve condenser .

Ÿ Loca�on of evapora�ve condenser should be properly selected based on Wind direc�on and unobstructed space for air entry . Inadequate space near the air entry can cause addi�onal air side pressure drops which can lead to rise in condensing temperature as the condenser is starved of sufficient air supply.

Ÿ Eleva�on of 1-1.5 meter from finished ground level is advisable to avoid any ground light weight debris to enter inside the system which may choke the circula�ng pump strainer .
