Ref: LCAA6354 5 HISTORICAL NOTE The renowned local authoress, Daphne du Maurier writes about lodging with Miss Roberts at The Nook and her family left the holiday home in Bodinnick during the autumn and winter of 1929. The book in which Daphne du Maurier mentions The Nook is ‘Myself when Young’ which was based on diaries she kept between 1920 and 1932. LOCATION Fowey is an extremely sought after town and one of the jewels in Cornwall’s crown, comprising predominately older properties arranged in picturesque streets along the riverbank now hosting an excellent variety of local trading shops, restaurants, cafés, inns and local business. The towns waterfront is centred around a deep natural harbour and the port is a constant bustle of boating activity, visited by over 7,000 craft during the summer season and having a sizeable boating community of its own of some 1,500 craft with an active sailing club. The moorings and pontoons in the harbour are governed by the harbourmasters office and requests should be made in this direction for adding one’s name to the waiting list. Fowey has an excellent mix of local trading shops that provide adequately for day-to-day requirements with both primary and secondary schools and a variety of churches. The riverfront provides access for boating enthusiasts to miles of rivers and creeks along the Fowey river and its various tributaries, together with access to the open sea for those taking part in the arranged yacht races or wishing to explore the Cornish coastline. On the opposite side of the harbour is the picturesque village of Polruan which is also worth a visit with its narrow streets of traditional stone cottages. The South West Coastal Footpath provides access (via the passenger ferry which runs between Fowey and Polruan), to both sides of the estuary with some wonderful walks to be enjoyed along the coastline, taking in cliff top scenery and quiet secluded bays/coves to the south, including Polkerris with its seafood restaurant, pub and harbour and further beyond that the dunes and freshwater lake/nature reserve at Par Sands. To the north one can walk along the coast as far as the picturesque fishing village of Looe and on up the coast towards Plymouth.
