We are responsible for the stewardship and management of the 51 properties we own and for monitoring 56 properties preserved by conservation easement. 2009 Annual Report D&R Greenway’s 20th Anniversary Year I n this issue of Greenways you will find a complete listing of our 2009 donors and an overview of our land preservation accomplishments. O n January 19, 2010, the deeds were signed that provide for the permanent preservation of the 340-acre St. Michael’s property in Hopewell. Public funding partners included the New Jersey State Agriculture Development Committee (Farmland Preservation Program), the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection Green Acres Program, Mercer County, Hopewell Township and Hopewell Borough. Together, these partners contributed $8 million toward the purchase price of the land. Non-profit funding provided by Friends of Hopewell Valley Open Space and the Stony Brook-Millstone Watershed Association, along with private contributions from The Willard T. C. Johnson Foundation, The Larson Land Foundation, Bristol-Myers Squibb Company, The Bunbury Company and nearly 900 individuals, completed the $11 million acquisition. It took more than six years to bring the St. Michael’s preservation project to a successful conclusion. According to D&R Greenway Executive Director Linda Mead, “In the 20 years of D&R Greenway’s history this was by far the most intricate preservation project we’ve ever encountered.” Two main factors contributed to the complexities of the St. Michael’s project. Multiple public partners, each with their own specific requirements for documenta- tion, created administrative challenges. Two dump sites on the property — one as- sociated with the original orphanage and farm and the other an illegal site off Aunt Molly Road — needed to be cleaned up to meet NJDEP standards before the state agencies would release funding. This work took two years to complete, with excellent results. In fact, the former Aunt Molly Road site will be transformed into a one- acre grove filled with native trees and shrubs, to become a model for studying the effects of carbon sequestration. We would especially like to thank Bob Harris and his company ENVIRON International Corp. for donating their services to D&R Greenway and advis- ing us during the clean-up process. We also thank Mark Solomon of Pepper Hamilton LLP, pro bono attorney for D&R Greenway, who provided countless hours of legal counsel throughout the course of this project. We would like to acknowledge the perseverance of all our public partners, who worked side-by-side with us to see this project through, and the patience of all of our donors, who have eagerly anticipated the preservation of St. Michael’s. That day has finally come. We are planning a community celebration in the early summer to introduce the beauty of the landscape to everyone. While the majority of the land will continue in active agriculture, plans are underway to mark trails throughout the property, making the haven of nature that is the St. Michael’s property accessible to all. For the latest information about St. Michael’s please visit our website, www.drgreenway.org and, if you have not already done so, please provide us with your email address to receive electronic updates. Our deepest thanks to everyone who helped make the dream of preserving the St. Michael’s property a reality. “The preservation of this property will forever safeguard the unique charm and character enjoyed by Hopewell Borough and Township today.” — D&R Greenway Land Trust Board Chair Richard Goldman

The Taplin Circle

Frank taplin was a well-known and respected philanthropist who championed the cause of land preservation. His vision and

leadership resulted in the permanent protection of two signature princeton landscapes, the Institute woods and Coventry Farm.

In 2004, D&R Greenway land trust honored Frank taplin’s memory and his wife peg’s continuing support of land preservation by creating the taplin Circle, to recognize individuals who contribute $1,000 or more annually to support D&R Greenway’s critical work. Members of the taplin Circle share Frank and peg’s commitment to preserving the land, the historic character and the natural resources of central new Jersey. we particularly acknowledge the members of the taplin Circle who have contributed to D&R Greenway for five or more consecutive years.

each fall, all members of the taplin Circle are invited to a special reception. the Glenmede trust Company has generously under-written the taplin Circle receptions for the past four years and we are greatful for their support.

please note that taplin Circle members who have made a multi-year pledge are listed here at their most recent pledge payment level. their total pledge amount is acknowledged on page 11.

we would like to express our deepest thanks and appreciation to the members of the taplin Circle for their leadership in supporting the work of D&R Greenway land trust.

2009 Partners in Preservation

D&R Greenway land trust would like to thank our partners in preservation for their investment in our mission. with your

support we are able to: preserve and care for natural and agricultural lands and historic •

landscapes in central new Jersey that have been permanently protected for the public’s benefit;

lend our expertise to advance land preservation in other parts of •the state;

Implement our vision for preservation based on developing and •extending a network of interconnected greenways throughout our region — contiguous preserved land optimizes the protection of wildlife, plants and water resources and provides for public access trails;

Inspire a conservation ethic by connecting people with the land. •perhaps the most significant benefit to preserving the natural and

agricultural landscapes surrounding our cities, towns and villages is that it strengthens these communities by providing, quite literally, “common ground”— a shared continuity of experience with the land that extends across the generations.

we particularly welcome first-time donors to our organization and acknowledge the families and individuals who have supported D&R Greenway’s work for five or more consecutive years. we are grateful for their unfailing generosity each and every day.

2009 Preservation RecapIn 2009, D&R Greenway preserved 15 properties, valued at $30,849,207 and encompassing 1,154 acres. These

lands included woodlands, meadows, stream corridors and farms. Of these, four were preserved in fee, whereby D&R Greenway acquired full title and became the owner and permanent steward of the land. Three were preserved with an agricultural or conservation easement, restricting the future uses of the privately-owned land. D&R Greenway acquired these easements and monitors the restricted land in perpetuity. The remaining properties were preserved through facilitation where D&R Greenway played a key role by providing professional expertise to landowners and funding partners to affect preservation results, but did not acquire an ownership interest in the land.

A landowner explains our role in facilitation:

Our preservation transactions were conceived of and made possible through the guidance of D&R Greenway Land Trust. D&R Greenway’s vision and relationships, and willingness to work to guide our business interests accordingly, resulted in these environmentally sensitive lands being preserved for public benefit in perpetuity. — Lawrence J. Silvi II, The Silvi Group Companies

Our 2009 accomplishments included preservation of 473 acres of mature forest in the Sourlands Greenway. An urban initiative in Bordentown added to our Blacks Creek Greenway and created new community parks. We expanded the Rocky Brook Greenway and added to the Plum Brook Greenway. In Salem County on Mannington Meadows, an important habitat for bald eagles and waterbirds, we protected two farms totaling 322 acres, joining the 1,900 acres of the neighboring Seabrook Farm preserved in 2008. Close to our home at the Johnson Education Center in Princeton, we protected land along the Stony Brook Greenway across from the Institute Woods.

We are grateful to all our state, county, municipal, and private partners with whom we work to preserve and protect the lands that safeguard our natural resources, farms and the beautiful places we love.

Business Partners in Preservation

we would like to thank our Business partners in preservation who share the same concerns about protecting our local

environment, water supply and wildlife habitat as D&R Greenway’s individual supporters. these local businesses and corporations clearly demonstrate their appreciation for the natural lands and open spaces that shape the quality of life in our region.

we would particularly like to thank those businesses who have supported the work of D&R Greenway for five or more consecutive years.

D&R Greenway encourages our supporters to patronize these businesses in appreciation for the investment they, in turn, have made to the quality of life in our communities.

EverGreen Circle

D&R Greenway’s everGreen Circle was created in2009 to recognize donors who have remembered

our organization in their wills or revocable trusts, or who have made a planned gift to us through a charitable gift annuity, their retirement plan or by other means.

Donors who made planned gifts prior to or during 2009 — our 20th anniversary year — had the added distinction of being Founding Members of the everGreen Circle. we are extending this honor to donors who make planned gifts during 2010.

D&R Greenway Announces The Charles Evans Future Conservation Leaders Award

Charles evans was a visionary and an en-

trepreneur who founded the evan picone fashion brand. He was also a contemplative man, who found renewal in nature. He appreciated the importance of preserving and caring for the land for the benefit of future generations. He would have recognized the need to encourage the next generation of environmental leaders.

In his honor, the Charles evans Foundation has presented an endowment to D&R Greenway land trust to fund the Charles evans Future Conservation leaders award. each year, D&R Greenway will grant one or more Conservation leaders awards to selected high school, undergraduate or graduate students with a strong interest in land preser-vation and stewardship or in

related fields such as develop-ment, communications or nonprofit management.

linda Munson, president of the Charles evans Foundation explained, “Charles believed in em-powering talent – through education, mentoring and training. D&R Greenway is an outstanding organization; there is none better able to prepare students to become environmental profession-als. It was a logical step to create the Charles evans Future Conservation leaders award for D&R Greenway to administer. I believe the results will have a lasting impact on the face and future of conservation.”

To apply, please visit D&R Greenway’s website www.drgreenway.org or call 609-924-4646 after April 1, 2010.

From left, Linda Munson, President of The Charles Evans Foundation presents a check for $100,000 to Dave Reynolds, D&R Greenway supporter and fundraising committee member, D&R Greenway Board Chair Rich Goldman and Executive Director Linda Mead.
