Snowmobile Safety is a Must Submitted by the International Snowmobile Manufacturers Association

Haslett, MI (November 25, 2014) Safe, responsible riding is actively supported and promoted by organized snowmobiling. Snowmobile safety trainers have been conducting snowmobile safety classes for decades in the United States and Canada and in 1995 the community embraced the Safe Riders! You Make Snowmobiling Safe© safety campaign - the guidepost for safe snowmobiling behavior.

The Safe Riders! campaign highlights that individual behavior and responsibility is the key to making snowmobiling safe. Snowmobilers understand that snowmobiling is fun, but it is work too. It challenges the body and the mind and you need to be attentive while snowmobiling. Safe snowmobilers know their abilities and understand not to go beyond them.

Snowmobile safety begins with the machine, which is built to the highest standards. It is the responsibility of snowmobilers to keep their machine in top running condition following all of the recommended pre-ride checklists found in the owner’s manual and making sure the vehicle is in top notch shape before riding.

Snowmobilers also understand the need to dress appropriately while snowmobiling. Individuals must wear

warm clothing, generally supplied through the snowmobile manufacturers and dealers. The clothing includes, dressing in layers with high quality jackets, bibbs, boots, gloves and a certified helmet.

Snowmobilers need to think ahead and prepare where they are going to ride. It is best to file a plan with family or friends and let people where you are going to snowmobile. You need

to be familiar with the riding area and or ride with individuals who have been there before.Safe snowmobilers follow the key guidelines of the Safe Riders! training/refresher courses.• Snowmobilers know before they go and always check local

Safe mountain riders know that avalanche safety training and awareness is of special importance. There are 5 key avalanche safety guidelines which should always be remembered when riding in the mountains:1. Get the Gear: Ensure everyone has an avalanche transceiver, shovel, and probe on their person and knows how to use them2. Get the Training: Take an avalanche course which will highlight key issues.

Hello Snowmobilers. There’s snow out there……and some of you are lucky enough to have been snowmobiling already. With just a little more the groomers will be out there building wonderful trails for you. Snow shelters are open for the season and stocked with wood by local snowmobile club members. Most clubs were able to do a lot of trail clearing this summer and fall but recent wind storms in some areas caused more trees to come down so watch out for trail hazards with low snow depth.

Please be advised again that an amendment to the OSSA bylaws will be presented to the membership at the general membership meeting on Saturday morning, January 17th. The proposed amendment will change the OSSA membership year to September 1 through August 31 to coincide with our grooming program fiscal year. This change will also assure that snowmobilers participating in activities during the summer such as work parties and BBQ’s will be current OSSA members through August 31st.

Elections this year will be held for OSSA president, vice president, district directors for districts 1 and 8 and Directors at large for district 1&2 and 3&4. District directors will be elected by the delegates of their respective districts at the beginning of the general membership meeting Saturday morning January 17th. Please send me the names of your delegates prior to the convention. President, Vice President and Directors at large are elected by the board.

La Pine and the La Pine Lodgepole Dodgers are looking forward to welcoming you to the OSSA convention January 13 – 17, 2015 starting with rides and nightly get-togethers on Tuesday, January 13, 2015. The board meeting is Friday afternoon; hospitality with pizza is Friday evening. The general membership meeting starts at 9AM Saturday morning and the banquet is Saturday evening with guest speaker Dr. Ken Haevernick, OSSA’s first president in 1973.

We will have a silent auction to benefit our legal fund and a raffle to help pay expenses. Items for each are welcome and appreciated.

We ask all OSSA clubs to make a donation to help make this successful. Please bring items to the convention or give them to your district director. If necessary call the OSSA office- 888-567-7669.

We welcome our new safety instructor, Mark Higham. Mark will be conducting a safety class at Wanoga sno-park December 21st at 10 AM. You can contact Mark at [email protected]. Susie Wirgess, [email protected] and Mark Higham will conduct a snowmobile safety certification class on Saturday, January 17th during the convention. OSSA sponsored cert classes are free but pre- registration is appreciated.

La Pine is also celebrating the 25th anniversary of the dedication of the Newberry National Volcanic Monument. This Paulina Lake area is a wonderful example of how snowmobiling and a monument designation can successfully work together. The monument legislation was the result of a two year planning process with council members that represented varied interests. The resulting legislation provides for and assures snowmobiling to continue at current levels or more in the monument.

It is the Christmas season and most OSSA clubs collect canned food or provide Christmas baskets for those less fortunate than we are. If you don’t have a particular charity please make donations of food or clothing to your local Salvation Army. Several of our clubs plan fund raising events for the Candlelighters and others plan a day on the snow for the kids with cancer and their families. This has become a tradition and an event we enjoy as much as the kids and their families. Pick a group or organization and plan something to benefit others and be sure and let us know. It’s a good time to share.

Nancy Peterson, charter member of the Mt Hood snowmobile club passed on November 7, 2015. Nancy was a charter member of the Mt Hood snowmobile club active in many offices and activities of the club including the Candlelighters. Nancy was OSSA secretary

The calendar shows December, the stores are decked out for Christmas with all sorts of sales, but where is the SNOW? Maybe you haven’t done your snow dance!

The grooming crews are ready and waiting for enough snow to get started. We all need to give these guys a big “Thank You” for all of the volunteer hours they give to our program.

I hope by now you have all sent in your reservations for the convention in LaPine. The rides will begin on January 13th and the OSSA meetings are the 16th and 17th. Please remember to bring raffle and legal action items or if you are not attending get them to your District Director.

I keeping asking you to buy an ACSA (American Council of Snowmobile Associations) calendar, but these are important as well as it gives you a chance to win some money. This organization is our National voice in our continued battle to keep our trails open. The cost is $20.00 and OSSA

retains $5.00 of it. There is a drawing every day , so you have365 chances to win. Please contact your District Director and purchase one.

I have seen the new Kapka Snowpark off of Century Drive near Mt Bachelor and “WOW”. It was worth all of the blood, sweat and tears of the last 10 years.

I know that is hard to encourage new and renewing members when we have had such low snow, but our numbers count in many ways including land issues. So please keep trying to increase your membership. Make your club the one that everyone wants to be a part of.

I hope all Directors and clubs have sent articles to this paper. I think Dan and the crew at Eagle Highway Magazine are doing a great job but they cannot do it without help from everyone.

I hope you all have a Very Merry Christmas!! May God bless you all.

Yay!!! It’s finally snowing. If you are like us, you have been itching to get out there on the snow. The Dodgers have been doing snow dances and praying like crazy for a bunch of snow. I hope all of you had a great Thanksgiving.

Club rides out of Ten Mile Snow Park are scheduled for the 9th, 16th, and 22nd weather permitting, leaving at 10:00 am. The Dodgers will be hosting our annual Christmas party on December the 13th. The ride starts at 09:30, and if you are not into that, the decorating starts at the warming shelter at 10:00am. The pot luck will start at noon with a gift exchange to follow. If you’re in town, come down and join us!

The club membership have been working hard planning and making all the preparations for the upcoming 2015 Snowmobile Convention, which just to remind you all, will be on January 13th through the 17th. Before I end this months report, I want you to see another one of the special locations that you will be able to visit should you chose to come over and join us. Below is a picture that I took last year. (Picture One) See you at the convention!

A special thank you goes out to all of our sponsors, volunteers and groomers who help make the Lodge Pole Dodgers such a great club and a special place to ride!

Well here we are with the snowmobile season just arriving, full of all the promise and excitement that brings, epic stuck’s, awesome climbs, beautiful bluebird days in the high country and for some of us quiet peaceful days spent grooming trails. Some of you have been out for a ride already and some have yet to start there sleds for the first time of the season, as of the time I wrote this my sled is prepped and ready to go though I have not yet ventured out. I generally do not possess the self-control to keep it on the roads in the early season and have learned it’s just better (and cheaper) to wait until it deepens up a bit, hopefully that happens very soon.

As a new Director at Large for OSSA I

still have a few things to learn and Grooming Chairman to meet so I plan to ride a little in all areas of the district to get a little better acquainted, not to mention see some new country.

In the Grooming department, the cats are all ready for the season and grooming will get started as soon as the snow is deep enough which should be very soon, I am looking forward to a good season on the snow.

A big thanks to all the groomers out there for all the volunteer hours they put in to keep our trails in good shape and access open to the awesome riding Oregon has to offer.

I wish you all a great riding season and a Merry Christmas.

3. Get the Forecast: Make a riding plan based on the current avalanche and weather forecast.4. Get the Picture: If you see recent avalanche activity, unstable snow exists. Riding on or under slopes is dangerous.5. Get Out of Harm’s Way: One at a time on all avalanche slopes. Don’t go to help your stuck friend, the extra weight could initiate

an avalanche. Also, don’t group up in runout zones or at the base of mountains.

violating the number one rule – ski with a buddy if you are going to ski the trees in these kinds of conditions - but I have always balked at that rule, knowing full well that when I do ski with a buddy in those conditions that we never keep that close of track of one another anyway. My rule was “no friends on a powder day” and in my 40-some years of skiing I’ve had some close brushes with tree wells but nothing that left me questioning my ability to deal with it. I made a conscious decision that the risk of skiing alone was worth the rewards but I also made a decision to NOT ski west of Northwest where the tree well hazard was extreme. Besides, “Downunder West” on the Outback chairlift had some of the lightest and deepest snow I had found all day and there was no competition for a new track especially along the sides of the run.

Late in the day, sometime after 2:30, I’m bouncing in and out of the trees on the sides of “Downunder West” and thinking that this is probably my last run of the day when I hit a deep compression with a little

kicker that launches me head first and airborn. I immediately recognize the tree well that I am aimed at and ask myself “Is this really happening or is this another visualization of what it would be like for this to happen?”. The next thing I know it’s dark, I’m disoriented and I’m completely immobilized from my knees down (or up, depending on how you look at it). I immediately panic, screaming and flailing, pushing and finding no leverage, my breathing quickly turns to gasping. It takes me a minute or so to calm myself and start remembering what I had read on the website about what to do if you find yourself in this situation … stay calm, clear some airspace, move your body slowly to try to create more space. I realize that I’m upside down and my lower legs and feet are free so I decide to kick my legs from the knees down (or up) and try to draw attention to my predicament if anybody is around up there.

After a while of kicking, I start thinking about how late in the day it is, how few people are left on the mountain, how I hadn’t seen another skier or snowboarder on this run and that I am well off to the side of the main run.

It certainly feels like we are in fall now, and hopefully we will have a good winter this year with plenty of snow to ride on and to fill our lakes and reservoirs. We just received some exciting news that we were awarded RTP funding to build a 40 x 40 foot shed for our groomer.

The shed will be built next spring/summer and will be located in the ODOT parking lot near Lake of the Woods. It will be great to finally have somewhere to store our groomer and somewhere out of the weather to do maintenance and repairs on the groomer.

We have decided that club meetings will be on the third Tuesday of each month at 6:00 p.m. All of our general meetings will be a potluck dinner (unless noted otherwise). Our general meetings will be as follows:

Tuesday 12/16/14 @ Klamath Basin Equipment – Christmas partyTuesday 1/20/15 @ American Marine & RVTuesday 2/17/15 @ Klamath Basin EquipmentTuesday 3/17/15 @ American Marine & RVSaturday 4/18/15 @ TBA – End of the year banquet

We will be doing a gift exchange at our Christmas Party, so please bring a $10-20 gift and we will see how many times it gets “stolen”. The club will be providing turkey for the Christmas Party, so please bring your favorite side dish. We hope to schedule the steak feed, club rides, and club playdays, but we have decided to wait until there is snow before setting a schedule for these events. We will certainly keep you posted once we see the snow starting to fly.

We would like to remind everyone that this year’s OSSA state convention will be LaPine with guided rides starting on Tuesday January 13th and the banquet will be on Saturday January 17th.

We would like to invite everyone to check out our website at: www.kbsnowdrifters.org. There have been several changes to the website, and we are very pleased with how it is turning out.

Everyone should be receiving a 2014-2015 Klamath Basin Snowdrifters membership application in the mail soon. We hope to see everyone on December 16th. Thank you for your support.

Sincerely, Thomas Bentley, Vice President KBSD

The roads that will be plowed and hauled on include snowmobile trails- Rds. 22 and 2230. The Rd. 2230 and Rd. 22/500 hauling should be completed by late December. At that time, Rd. 22 and side roads to the west of Rd. 2230 will continue to be used, but opens up the 2230 (and points east) for trail use again. For more information, please contact Public Affairs Officer Patrick Lair at (541) 416-6647. (See Attached Map)

Last, the club has the Ochoco Snow Sports logo on hats and apparel available to order at Bullseye Screen Printing @ 541 416-0434. Look forward to seeing everyone on the mountain.

ACTIVE LOGGING OPERATIONS IN THIS AREA

- For your safety please avoid the Timber Sale Area detailed in RED on the map above.

- Additionally, snowmobiles are not permitted on plowed roads. The plowed hauling route is detailed above in BLACK.

When I finally decide that this kicking strategy is getting me nowhere fast I go back into full-on panic mode – screaming, flailing, gasping. I calm myself again and come to the realization that every time I panic my predicament gets worse, mainly from expending the energy that it takes to panic.

I discover that my hydration pack has ridden up over the top of my helmet and that my goggles are around my chin. My hands are in front of my face and, since I didn’t have pole straps on, they are very usable. The snow in front of me is not real dense and it is relieving to find that it is easy to clear a fairly large area in front of my face. I make an attempt to pull one of my poles from my side so that I might be able to find the bottom of the hole with it to give me some leverage to push against, but I can’t move my pole. Panic sets in once again … uncontrollable panic, and once again I calm myself and start working on another plan. I decide that my hydration pack and helmet might be too much bulk to be pushing out the same hole that I came in through and maybe if I can get them off and in front of me that it will give me some more room to work. So I remove my gloves to try to unhook the snaps on my pack and helmet. My pack is on top of my helmet and even though I can’t get the straps unbuckled I am able to pull the pack over my helmet and get it out in front of me in my breathing space. I try using my pack to push against, thinking that it might just be enough surface area to give me enough leverage against the unconsolidated snow to push my way backwards. But pushing on my pack meets no resistance and panic sets in once again, uncontrollable panic.

After I talk myself off the ledge again I find all these thoughts going through my head about things like family and life insurance and unfinished business. I remember a young snowboarder named Kate that lost her life up here at Bachelor several years ago. It took weeks for searchers to find her body in the same position mine is in right now … upside down in a tree well. I start wondering if I will suffocate before freezing and which would be more agonizing.

I realize that my eyes are adjusting to the darkness and I can now see a faint blue light in my upper right peripheral vision so I use my hydration pack to reach as far toward that direction as possible. The light gets brighter as I blindly stab my pack toward it and I can now make out shapes and some details inside my breathing space. Having some light is a great psychological improvement over the complete darkness. I came up with a new plan: maybe I can tunnel forwards (down) and then turn up, toward the source of the light, and escape in that direction instead of backing out the way I came in.

I start wiggling my body down into the hole farther but I immediately feel more weight on my back and stop to reevaluate that idea. I decide that the hole may be closing shut behind me as I wiggle down in, and that if I’m wrong about getting out in the forward direction that this maneuver may close my only open door out, which is the way I came in. So I abandon that plan and panic again, uncontrollable panic that I fully realize is only making my situation worse.

Once again I calm myself and Continued see Fear page 6

The North Santiam Snowmobile Club (NSSC) is ready for snow! We kicked off our season with a progressive potluck dinner on October 18th. We traveled around the Detroit area to members’ homes enjoying appetizers (hosted by Bob & Sandy Franz), salads (hosted by Harold & Yvonne Hills), prime rib dinner (provided by Kevin Hills and NSSC) and dessert (hosted by Keith & Anita Munn). And a big thank you to Elaine Lafond for decorating Detroit’s City Hall for the main course. The dinner was a great time to renew friendships and make plans for this winter’s snowmobiling season.

Our club is working together to get everything in place for a fantastic season. October 18th was also a work day at our warming shelter. NSSC members cut trees for firewood, replaced snow poles around our trails and cleaned around the shelter. NSSC members Terry Bonnett, Gene Smith, Keith Munn, Duane Schultz and Steve Ruyle have been working on repairs on the club’s snow cat and groomer in preparation for snow. Kevin and Gerry Hills donated additional firewood for the shelter.

On November 15th the North Santiam Snowmobile Club held their annual Thanksgiving potluck dinner. Thirty two

members attended the event which was hosted by Steve & Debby Ruyle and Terry & Sharon Bonnett. The dinner was held at Detroit’s City Hall and was very festive thanks to Sharon Bonnett and Yvonne Hills’ decorating skills! Elaine Lafond won the raffle prize which raised $100 for the club.

North Santiam Snowmobile Club’s next event is our Christmas party on December 13th. It will be hosted by Dean & Linda O’Donnell and Bob & Sandy Franz. We will enjoy a potluck dinner and have a white elephant gift exchange.Other events planned include:December 31, 2014 – New Year’s Eve Club Ride at McCoy January 17, 2015 – potluck Dinner hosted by Rick Ladbury & Jeanette Hartwell and Dave & Lyn SchultzJanuary 31 - February 1, 2015 – paulina Lake Club RideFebruary 21, 2015 – Valentine’s potluck Dinner hosted by Keith & Anita MunnMarch 21, 2015 – potluck Dinner hosted by Harold & Yvonne HillsApril 18, 2015 - potluck Dinner hosted by Kevin Hills & Vickie LarsonLet it Snow… Let it Snow… Let it Snow…

take an inventory of what’s in my breathing space; my pack, my gloves, some tree branches. Maybe I can get some leverage by pushing against these newly found tree branches! It was right around here that I remembered a statistic that I read on that tree well safety website: 90% of the volunteers that dove into a tree well during a controlled demonstration were unable to self-rescue. The tree branches proved to be about as effective as my hydration pack did and I panic again.

Then I find that one of these tree branches originates from somewhere behind my right shoulder. I reach back above my right shoulder with my bare left hand, grasp the branch and pull until it breaks. I try to use the broken branch in conjunction with my hydration pack and the other branches in my airspace to push on but still, no resistance, no leverage. Panic again, screaming, gasping for breath, spending energy that I don’t have.

I discover that there is a much larger branch where the other branch broke off and I wiggle around so that I can get both bare hands over my right shoulder and get a good grasp on it. With most of the energy that I have left I pull on this branch as hard as I can over my right shoulder and, as I pull with all my might, I feel the weight on my back lighten, I see daylight and I find myself above the snow.

I’M GOING TO LIVE!! I’M NOT GOING TO DIE IN THAT HOLE!! I’m screaming this out loud. I’M NOT GOING TO DIE IN THAT HOLE!! My body is in a state of shock and/or hypothermia, I’m shaking uncontrollably and I’m babbling in sentences that only make sense to me. I hadn’t been cold up till now but cold sets in now with a vengeance. I feel dizzy and sick to my stomach. I have a

On October 25th, the club had a work party where Roger Ingalls, Curt Christopherson, John Nolte, Bill Rice, Ken Swearingen and Ryan Marks showed up to help get the groomer ready for the coming season. The groomer is ready to go, bring on the snow!

Read recently in the Bend Bulletin, this could be a milder winter similar to the 2013/2014 snowmobile season. We all need to get out there and do our snow dances.

The club had the annual kick-off dinner on November 1 at Brand 33, Aspen Lakes. Thirty club members showed up and fun was had by all. There

were great raffle items, we did our usual snow depth guess for the New Year’s Eve chili feed. The club collected 143 lbs of food for the Sisters Kiwanis. Good going, each year we collecting more food.

Bill Rice was presented with the Sno-Go-Fers annual Goofer Award by Nick Milo, who was only to happy to get rid of it. Apparently Bill has that don’t give up attitude, but after the third crash going up the chute, it was pretty much his award.

Good wishes go out to everyone for this coming holiday season.

Event Schedule GREETINGS ROGUE SNOWMOBILERS! It is almost December and some snow has fallen but not enough yet to fire up our sleds and head out into the snow covered landscape.

I would like to warn everybody of the dangers of riding in low snow conditions. Low snow conditions have ruined many people’s a-arms, tunnels and tracks. I know it is tough early in the year to stick to the trails when you look at all those untouched great lines but I urge everybody to think twice before going for it. I will try my darnedest to practice what I preach as well.

The club recently had our yearly work party

and we got a lot done I would like thank everybody that attended and gave us a lot of help. We were able to fill both the wood sheds at Thousand and at Hamaker we also were able to replace all the loose screws in the roof at Thousand springs warming shed. I would like to say thanks again to everybody that attended without these work parties we wouldn’t be able to stay warm and dry during the winter months.

We have many great rides planned for this year starting with the Christmas tree ride on December 6th at Thousand Springs. We will be doing this get together if there is snow or not. I would really like to

urge everybody to attend the December general meeting to please help out with the shoe boxes for seniors that we do every holiday season. This donation our club does every year helps out many local seniors with some essential items that they may be needing. This year your board also felt like we should sponsor a Christmas family which will help out a family in need during the holidays. This club is very blessed in many ways and we fill we should help out whenever we can. Recently we had our annual snowmobile safety class with 8 children in attendance I would like thank Dennis Jordan for volunteering his time to teach it. Dennis has been teaching this class for so long that soon we will have multiple generations of riders taught by him.

Later in this season we will be having two large events that are put on by our club the first of which is the Mt. Bailey 3000 and then the District 5 play day both events require a lot of work and we could use your help. So please contact me and let me know if you can help we would really appreciate it.

I would like everybody to know that this is your club and I would like any feedback from all of you on any issues you may have out on the trails with either grooming, other user groups or any safety issues that you may see. The snow is real close to getting here so I will see you all out in the snow parks. Have fun and be safe.

~ Dave Jordan, President

Greetings snowmobile enthusiasts! I hope the reading of this newsletter finds everyone well and ready for the snowmobile season. Here in Bend we have had a little tease of winter already and some club members were able to get out and get some miles on their sleds before Thanksgiving. Of course early season conditions still exist and I urge everyone to be very careful out there until we get some more snow to cover up those rocks and stumps.

The Snowbusters again have a full schedule of events for the snowmobile season and are very happy to announce that the 4th Annual “Central Oregon Snowmobile Drag Races” presented by Pro-Caliber Motorsports of Bend have been scheduled fore the 21st & 22nd of Feb. 2015. We will be hosting all of the same classes that we have over the last couple of years including the “Outlaws” with their $1500.00 winner take all cash payout and the very competitive “Ladies Only” class with their $500.00 cash payout. Keep an eye on our website for more information!!

Snowmobilers coming to Bend to ride this year are also going to be pleasantly surprised by the new snow park that was completed last summer. Kapka Sno-Park is now functional and ready to be enjoyed. It is a very large snow park and offers parking at a slightly higher elevation than Wanoga. There is lots of room for large trailers and motorhomes and overnight camping is available from there as well. It was a very long process in the making but it looks like it was well worth the wait.

The following is our club calendar of events. We hope that as many of you reading this as possible can join us for one of our fun events.

WALKER RIM RIDERS Club News

Crescent Lake, Gilchrist & Crescent areas As I write, a lot of good snow comin’ down. Seems the ground is cold enough to hold it.

We enjoyed our Annual Christmas Social on the 13th which included our friends from the Crescent-Odell Lakes Community Response Team. Many of our members are also members of that group. Typically they will respond and provide support and/or services to include, fire and emergency management services personnel as well as those who may be victims of emergency incidents or have other critical needs. Our social featured “great” food and our fun-filled gift exchange. CONFRONTATIONS of a minor and humorous nature abounded as “stealing” of gifts proceeded. Everyone was a “winner”!

Grooming Chairman Mark Bolton & crew have been “active”. Substantial trails maintenance work did get completed and the warmin’ huts at Crescent Lake Junction and up at Timpanogas are firewooded-up. Thankyou very much Mark ‘n crew and our President CJ Price together with Emily and the

several who helped with the trail maintenance and firewood work.

ON YOUR CALENDARS… a reminder that the 2nd Saturday of each month is our scheduled activity day with rides and a Board meeting that all are welcome to on the same day. We expect more impromptu rides to occur. YOU are encouraged to keep “watch” on our website ( HYPERLINK “http://www.walkerrimriders.com” www.walkerrimriders.com ) on the event list provide there as well as our facebook page for details. We anticipate trails reports and info. on our hotline

1-(541) 610-0220 to be available with updates AND there’s a club contact list available on the website. JOIN US…guests are always welcome.

MEMBERSHIP RENEWALS need be received by December 31st to avoid not being listed as a member on the club’s membership listing. For convenience we have PayPal available on our website or you can send payment to our club’s mailbox:

Walker Rim Riders PO box 1090 Crescent LAKE, OR. 97733

We’re hopeful that the LED battery powered “motion” lights installed at the JCT.

Warmin’ Hut will be a “good” thing. That they remain there and show us the way. Thanks CJ ‘n Emily.

PLEASE… plan to attend and to help and to participate in our 10th Annual Candlelighters event scheduled for Sunday February 22nd. Snowmobilers are a “sharing”, social group of folks and the Candlelighters kids with cancer and their families are the “very” activity that we can provide for; to help “defray” the trauma of their illness. Thank YOU for all you do and we look forward to this year’s “day in and on the snow” at the Crescent Lake Junction Snowpark. JOIN US!

To date, there’s been some snow and it’s getting’ use. Early ‘n a bit “scarce” but CJ ‘n “buds” have been active in the Bachelor area. We need watch for the typical hazards of “early” snow. There’s those “pesky” obstacles that we don’t wanna hit and then there’s the “no bottom” to it that can be “stuck-city”. BE CAREFUL & WATCHFUL!

IS EVERYONE EQUIPPED and READY? Gotcher avalanche equipment, gps ‘n compass ‘n maps? Know how to use ‘em? All the survival gear in the s/mobile? Done your buildin’ a fire practice? ON THE

SUBJECT OF MAPS! Many thanks again to Doug ‘n Diane Wardell for their continuing accomplishments with another “new” map for this season. YOU do want to get this new one. Many changes to the trails and markings. PLEASE note the list of our sponsors. See ‘em again on our website with contact information. DO stop and thank ‘em as you pick up YOUR NEW map. They make this and other things we need and do possible. PLEASE support them too!

THANK YOU to the other clubs who work so hard to make our visits to your areas interesting, safe, and lots of fun. YOUR websites and the articles you provide here in the OSN and your welcoming character IS very much appreciated. WE WISH YOU the very best & merriest Christmas and DO HOPE that your 2015 is the BEST EVER FOR YOU ‘n ALL OF YOUR FAMILIES and FRIENDS!!!!

Tollgate TrailFinders have been working on the trails and they are ready for ALL THE SNOW we will be getting. Organized Rides will be posted on www.tollgatetrailfinders.org as well as meetings, potlucks, and events.

Saturday Dec. 6th we will be holding a snow bazaar at the Tollgate clubhouse. There will be a pancake breakfast on that day starting at 8:30am then the bazaar will be in the afternoon starting about 1pm.

The Forest Service and Tollgate Trailfinders held a rededication of our warming shelter last summer, changing the name to Bone Springs-Chapman shelter in honor of Bernie Chapman and all their hard work.

TOLLGATETRAILFINDERS

splitting headache. My bare hands are so cold they are useless and I can’t even make them function well enough to get the one glove I can find, back on.

To my total amazement two skiers are coming down the run, they hear me screaming and somehow realize that my screams are not just celebration but also that I need help. The skiers were a woman taking a private lesson and her instructor from Mt. Bachelor, Larry Smith. Larry retrieved one of my skis, which was 15’ up the hill in the compression that I launched from, and they both helped me gather my gear and get it back on. One of my gloves is still down in that hole somewhere and Larry offers me his gloves and gave me his hat until I could get the snow cleaned out of my helmet and get it back on. Luckily they understood the seriousness of the situation better than I did because I kept telling them to not let me disrupt their lesson and that I’d be fine on my own. They insisted on accompanying me to the bottom of Northwest and then all the way back over to the Skyliner parking lot where my car was. I’ll be forever grateful for their caring assistance. I went back with a shovel a week later and dug until I found my lost glove.

I don’t know what the lesson in this story is and I don’t know who will read it, but it is my hope that somehow my story will prevent someone from having to go through what I did … or something much worse.
