PreambleReductionandsmeltingaretwoindependentunitprocessesemployedinmentalextractionthrough

FeO, ZnOand PbO.Whereassmeltingconsistsinheatingtheproductstoatemperatureabovethe
meltingpointtoseparateliquidmetalfromliquidslag.Bothunitprocessescanbecarriedout
simultaneouslyinonereactororintwoindependentinterconnectedreactors.
Typicallylead,zincandhotmetalareproducedinasinglereactorcalledblastfurnace.InKorexprocess
twoindependentinterconnectedreactorsareusedtoproducehotmetal. Shaftfurnaceisconnected
withasmeltergasifiesunit.
SalientfeaturesofleadreductionsmeltingInthefollowinglecturewewilldealwithproductionoflead.Asalientfeatureofleadblastfurnacewill

Attopoffurnacebaghousesareprovidedtocollectleadfurnacesfromoutgoinggases. Limestoneandquartzareaddedtomakeaslag.
