SUMMARY: Educators who have heard about Saturday School often view it as a punitive way to address poor behavior. It has historically had a place in our educational system as a way to punish student’s “bad” behavior. However, the implementation of PBIS, Restorative Practices, and the focus on Multi-tiered System of Supports, has facilitated a shift to creating systems that support or increase student engagement, and one that is moving away from punishment to other means of corrections. Education Code allows school districts to claim Average Daily Attendance (ADA) for students who have recorded an absence or been truant, provided the student attends a Saturday School. Attendance is for the applicable minimum day to the individual student(s) grade level and educational program setting (Education Code sections 46112, 46113, 46141, and 46142.) In schools today, the term Saturday School has been more closely associated as a consequence for “poor” or “bad” behavior. However, it can also be a place where positive activities occur for staff and students alike. When implemented with student engagement in mind, Saturday Academy takes the original concept of ADA recovery, and works with both teachers, students and their families, to create a program. Saturday Academy ignites a sense of community and relationship building, while at the same time meeting the academic needs of students. Saturday Academy can be used to place the focus on student engagement by empowering teachers to offer academic support classes like tutorial or test prep sessions, PE clinics, Fingerprint Analysis/Forensic Science classes, and Art/Woodshop skateboard design classes, just to name a few. This is a program, which can be used as part of the supports offered for students who are going through the SART and SARB process and to address truancy and chronic absenteeism.

(14 Saturdays = $9,920.96 for teachers)
$5,891.36 recovered ADA (14 Saturdays = $82,479)
24,000 Instructional Minutes Recovered in one day!
If we get 250 students to attend:
250 students X $66 = $16,500 (14 Saturdays = $231,000)
Subtract $2,480.24 (14 teachers @ $177.16 per Academy)

Dear Parents,
If your child has been absent, (EXCUSED OR UNEXCUSED) this school year, Anaheim Union High School District is providing students with an opportunity to recover lost instructional time due to a full day absence in our Saturday Academy Program beginning Saturday, September 10th. The goal of our Saturday Academy is to provide students not only a chance to recapture “lost learning,” but also an opportunity to work on their academic skills with our teachers in the areas of English, Math, Science, and History, AP and Honors tutorials, and computer lab time. In addition, enrichment activities, such as fine arts, performing arts, hands-on science, and other curricular areas may be offered.
One Saturday Academy will “wipe-out” one of your child’s absences and may be applied toward exemplary attendance status! The Saturday Academy sessions will be conducted at our school from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. which includes an opportunity for students to receive a boxed lunch. It is expected that students attending Saturday Academy will arrive on time, be picked up on time, and cooperate during the session. Please note that all regular school rules will be enforced. Students should arrive at 7:55 AM! Transportation will not be provided. Please make arrangements to pick up your child no later than 12:00 p.m.
There is no cost to you for this wonderful program; as a matter of fact, for every child attending our Saturday Academy, our District will recover the Average Daily Attendance (ADA) compensation that we lost when your child was absent from school, regardless of the reason.
Mark your calendars! Our first Saturday Academy is on Saturday, September 10th. If your child has been absent, (EXCUSED OR UNEXCUSED) this school year, we urge you to take advantage of this opportunity and plan on having your child attend. With your support, we can further instill the importance of learning and attendance, two important life skills that will determine a student’s success in their academic and employment career.
Your child will receive a notice at school. Please sign and return the notice to reserve a spot for your child. Space is limited and first come, first served. Once space is full, a students will be placed on a waitlist.
Please contact the Assistant Principal, John Jones at 714-999-1234 if you have questions. Thank you again for your support and cooperation.

Saturday Academy is for students with one or more days of excused or unexcused missed instruction who will have the opportunity to work on homework, classwork, study for tests/quizzes, and receive teacher support. In accordance with education code 37223 and 48264.5 this four hour makeup class will clear one day of absence.
Anaheim High School students that have been absent for any reason (EXCUSED or UNEXCUSED) since the first day of school will be given an opportunity to “wipe out” one full day of absence off your record. This is your chance to fix your attendance, and this day may be applied towards exemplary attendance status!
Goal: Saturday Academy will provide students an opportunity to work on academic skills with our teachers in the areas of English, Math, Science, History, Art, P.E., Performing Arts, Hands-on Labs, and Computer Lab.
