You should write down ALL subject homework you are given and the date it is due in. You should make any appropriate comments about your work.

Any comments from staff must be signed by your parents to acknowledge they have read them. Parents/carer should sign your student organiser each week to show they have seen it. A C1 detention will be issued if your organiser is not signed.

Your tutor will check your organiser regularly to see that it is being used correctly.

Remember:

● If you lose your organiser you must go to the library to purchase another.

● If you deface your organiser in any way you will be expected to buy a replacement. This includes writing on the cover or damage to the planner.

You must:● Have your organiser ready for each lesson.

● Write down the homework clearly: which subject, what is to be done and when it is to be done by. (If you need help ask your teacher.)

● Ask for help or advice if there is anything you are unsure about – you should do this well before the date the homework is due in.

● Ask your parent / carer to read any comments, reply if appropriate and sign to say you have read it.

● Ask your parent / carer to write a note in your organiser if there is a reason why homework has not been completed. This should be shown to the appropriate subject teacher.

● Find out what homework has been set and try to do it if you have been absent. Help out an absent friend by collecting homework sheet or tasks for him / her.

● Try to show your work to your parents / carers and explain what you have been doing.

● Always try to complete you homework to the best of your ability and also make sure it is neatly presented.

Trousers - Plain dark charcoal trousers of a conventional design (no jeans, jean style/cords, ski pants, leggings/skinnys, combat style or fashion trousers).

Skirts - Charcoal pleated – knee length (one design only so must be purchased from suppliers).

Shorts - tailored school grey shorts can be bought from approved retailers only and worn in the second half of the summer term.

V-Neck Jumper - (optional) grey with burgundy stripe at the neck and logo (must be purchased from suppliers).

We will be happy to advise you, as what shops say is acceptable uniform, is often not the case. Jewellery is not appropriate for wearing in school and is, therefore, not allowed. The exception to this is that one pair of plain stud earrings are allowed (one in each ear) and watches may also be worn. Other body piercings eg tongue are not appropriate for school and students will be asked to remove them. Please only get piercings done right at the start of the summer holidays as they often take weeks to heal and will not be allowed in school if they are not simple stud earrings.

How to demonstrate your Redmoor DNA.

In your lessons...As experts in education, we know what makes students successful and the big secret is… EFFORT. That’s why we expect our students to work hard in every lesson. Showing the Redmoor DNA in class means that you will:

● Take pride in your work● Complete it with detail and depth● Be able to work independently

without over-relying on your teacher● Participate fully● Show resilience (a never give up

attitude) when faced with challenging work

Demonstrating your DNA will help you earn classwork effort scores of As and Bs on your school reports, house points and praise. You’ll also be making yourselves successful students and building skills for life.

Put in the effort to reach the top of the success iceberg.

In your independent studies...Again, we expect you to put maximum EFFORT into your independent learning (homework and all of the extra things you might do to extend your knowledge and skills).

● Do your homework on time every week● Don’t rush it● Complete it to the best of your ability● Take pride in your presentation ● Use methods of revision that will help you to

best store the knowledge and retrieve it at a later date

By doing this you will be on your way to achieving As for effort with your homework and receiving lots of house points. Remember, failing to hit these standards will result in sanctions being given.

All Redmoor there is an expectation that all students give maximum effort to all the work they complete. We know students who try their best and have good attitude, make the best progress.

The curriculum at Redmoor means you will study a breadth of subjects in detail and depth. The knowledge you learn in your lessons will be important throughout your 5 years at Redmoor and beyond. We need you to remember knowledge in year 7 that will be built on in lessons until your leave Redmoor at the end of year 11. Your teachers will plan lessons to help you do this. But you also need to do this independently at home.

It is important that we review knowledge. Below are some top tips to how you can do this over your time at Redmoor.

How we learn at Redmoor

Why reviewing your learning is so important

As soon as we are told a new piece of information, most of that information is ‘lost’ and forgotten. Hermann Ebbinghaus found that repeating information helps us remember more of it.So we need to be reviewing and going over what we learn in order for us to remember and be able to use the information after a period of time has passed.

Below are 6 top tips of how to continuously review and consolidate what you have learnt.

Common methods of review that are the LEAST effective:

● Highlighting key points● Re-reading ● Summarising texts

Retrieval practice

Testing what you know is a powerful tool in revision; the effort to remember something really strengthens your memory. Apps such as Memrise and Quizlet allow you to use or create your own quizzes based on topics. Create them, test yourself or get someone to test you. It works!

Retrieval practice is something you will find in your lessons across the school, often at the start of a lesson

Flash cards

Simply create questions on one side, answers on the other. Colourcode the cards for specific topics. Post it notes can be useful forkeywords and timelines.Once you have created your flash cards, you need to think about how you will use them effectively. One way is the Leitner method.

Effort

Progress

Page 13: Redmoor Academy Information Booklet€¦ · letter. When you need to leave, take your letter to the Student Reception (in the Zone) and either: 1) receive a blue pass out if you are

Spacing and interleaving

When revising you should avoid ‘cramming’ andrevising a big chunk of topic one after the other. Instead, you should revise ‘chunks’ of a topic forsmall amounts of time (15-30 minutes) and then move onto another ‘chunk’ from a differenttopic.

Eg. topic 1 cells, topic 2 digestive system. This will improve your memory!

Cornell Notes

This method can be used in your revision books as a great method to get you to ‘think’ about your revision. Simply split your page into 3 sections as shown on the diagram below: • Note Taking • Key words / concepts • Summary

Transform it

Graphic organisers are a great way of ‘transforming’ your notes/information into visual revision topics.

How to use:1. Timelines. E.g. create a timeline to explain the chronological plot of a text in English

2. Comparing ideas:Create a Venn diagram to show the difference and similarities. Eg in prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells in science

3. Concept Mapping: At the end of a week, mind map all you can remember about a topic and link areas together.

Dual coding

Dual coding is the process of combining verbal materials with visual materials.

Simply take information that you are trying tolearn, and draw visuals to go with it

We know working hard and good effort leads to great success and progress in school. As part of Redmoor DNA we expect all students to put maximum effort in to all of your work in class and at home.

Some of the methods here will help you with your work at home.

How we learn at Redmoor

Page 14: Redmoor Academy Information Booklet€¦ · letter. When you need to leave, take your letter to the Student Reception (in the Zone) and either: 1) receive a blue pass out if you are

Make sure that you take pride in your work and its presentation. Follow these rules at all time:

1. Do not doodle anywhere on or in your school exercise books, planner, knowledge organiser or red homework book.

2. Write neatly and carefully in black or blue ink only.3. All drawings as well as work on maps, graphs, diagrams and on music paper should be done

in pencil.4. If you make a mistake, cross it out neatly with a single line. Mistakes in pencil should be

rubbed out carefully with a clean rubber. Do not use correcting fluid. 5. Proofread all of your written work carefully, looking for errors with your spelling, punctuation

and grammar. 6. When written work is done on a computer, use the spell checker to make sure that your

spelling is accurate.

Take pride in your work and its presentation:

1. Write the full date on the right-hand side of the page at the beginning of each piece of work and underline it neatly.

2. Show whether your work has been done in class, or at home, by writing classwork or homework at the top of the page.

3. In MFL lessons, remember to write the date in the language you are studying. 4. All pieces of work should have a title, underlined once with a ruler.5. Write against the margin where you are using ruled pages. 6. Maps and diagrams should have a title and key. 7. Write the question number in the margin if appropriate. 8. Look ahead to the end of the end of the line to see if your writing will fit. Start a word on the

next line if you need to rather than squashing it in or splitting it. 9. When you have finished a whole piece of work, rule it off.

10. Use all of your page and avoid starting a fresh one for every new lesson.

Follow these guidelines for setting out your work:

Sp Spelling mistake

^ Missing word / letter

O (circling on your work) Capital letters / punctuation(full stops, commas, apostrophes etc)

~~~~~~ (your work is underlined) Unclear / poorly worded
// New paragraph needed
th Use a thesaurus
DIRT (Dedicated Improvement and Reflectiontime)
“If it’s not excellent, it’s not finished!”
In your knowledge organiser packs, you will find a purple pen. You will use the purple pen to improve your work and for you to see the progress you have made. The teacher’s feedback will help you to make your work excellent.
The process will be:1. You will complete the work to the best of your ability2. Your teacher gives you feedback that will mean you can improve your work3. You will given time to improve your work for you to move your work towards excellence
Parents and CarersTip to help your child with learning at home:
★ Try to provide a suitable place and right equipment for your child to complete their homework
★ Take an interest in what your child is learning about★ Take an interest in how well they did in previous homework. Give praise for
praiseworthy effort! ★ Help your child find information using their books and other resources. Try
not to do it for them!★ Encourage your child to read out loud. Reading is an essential skill for leaning.★ Keep an eye on how much your child is reading by checking and signing their
reading log in this planner★ Help with spelling, punctuation and grammar★ Reward your child for completing homework tasks★ Encourage your child to explain their homework to you. Discussion often
KS3 Homework
At Redmoor, we feel it is important to support you as students in making excellent progress. Knowledge organisers put together the most important information you need to know for your subjects. They also make sure you have lots of knowledge to make you successful in life. Over time, you will build up a core bank of facts, quotations and vocabulary that will help you to excel in exams and understand the world around you. Your teachers will guide you in what to memorise.
At the beginning of the academic year, you will be given a folder with your knowledge organiser pack. In this pack, you will find all of your knowledge organisers for the first term, an exercise book to show your practising of the knowledge and a purple pen for improvements to your work. The folder MUST be brought to school EVERY day or an automatic C1 sanction will be issued.
Your homework every week will be based around your knowledge organisers. The homework will need to be completed in the red exercise book given to you, with the subject and the title. Your teachers will then give you a quick quiz based on the knowledge learnt.
You are expected to spend the following time on your learning of the knowledge each week:
Year 7 and 8: 20 minutes for each subjectYear 9: 30-40 minutes for each subject per week
KS4 Homework
Using the key revision skills you have built up during KS3, you will be set homework to prepare and support you with your GCSE courses. Your homework will be focused on both the content and skills needed to succeed in your GCSEs. Some subjects will be using knowledge organisers, as this is an excellent way for you to accumulate knowledge. At GCSE, you should expect to spend more time on homework, which is an investment in your future success.
Develop the Redmoor DNA Character: think hard, work hard, go far
What are the DNA Character Awards?We believe that each and every one of you has the Redmoor DNA. The Character Awards are your opportunity to develop and showcase your individual skills and talents, both inside and outside of school. They are a brilliant opportunity for you to step outside of your comfort zone, learn something new and grow as a person. The 3 stages to the awards are:
★ Step 1: Delta DNA Award★ Step 2: Nu DNA Award★ Step 3: Alpha DNA Ambassador Award
All you have to do is complete 10 tasks for each level of award (they become more demanding as you strengthen your DNA character). You must collect evidence to show how you’ve completed the task and record which strand(s) of the DNA you’ve hit. Once complete, you’ll need to show your signed off log to your tutor and then submit your final application via Google Forms.
If successful, you’ll be awarded an enamel pin badge for your blazer and house points (50 for Delta, 75 for Nu and 100 for Alpha). These awards will be celebrated publicly in school.
Delta
Nu
AlphaWe’ve borrowed the names for these awards from the
Greek alphabet’s words for the letters D, N and A.
Class Charts is an online system which teachers use to track achievement and behaviour throughout the school day. Your positive and negative behaviour points are shared with you in real-time as they are issued by staff.
We would like you to monitor this and to make sure if you get a detention you do not forget to go. Students all have a login and you can download an app so you can monitor it on your phone. Your parents will also have access to this and tutors will discuss your points with you. You can access class charts via our website.
The live activity feed will look like this like this but will only be for you. You can also
see a chart showing a break down of your
behaviour.
Helping Students to Improve
At Redmoor we have very high expectations of how students should behave. To support students to meet our high expectations it is sometimes necessary to put students on to a behaviour report. You can be put on report to your tutor, the Behaviour Support Team, your Year Manager or to SLT. The majority of students never go onto a behaviour report. You will be put onto a behaviour report to your tutor if you receive 10 negative behaviour points on Class Charts in 6 weeks. Targets are set together and monitored for two weeks. You have to look after your report and give it to your teachers at the start of each lesson. Your parents have to sign it at home and you have to show it to your tutor at the agreed time. These supportive measures are here to help you to improve so you can meet your full potential at Redmoor.
Head of Year DetentionThis sanction will incur a 45 minute detention on a Wednesday, starting at 3pm. Parents will be notified on Class Charts and by telephone or email.
Behaviour Reports
KS4 Progress ReportsKS4 Progress ReportWe have the highest expectations of our students so those whose effort in class and with homework is falling short of this might be placed on Progress Report for a minimum 3 week period to either their tutor, Year Manager or member of SLT. The Progress Report is designed to support Year 10 and 11 students in reaching their potential by improving their attitude towards their academic studies. It is only with sustained effort, and the support of both home and school, that success can be achieved.
When a student on Progress Report does not display the Redmoor DNA and meet the teacher’s expectations in class or with homework, a same-day after school sanction will be given as explained below. This will be communicated with parents / carers via Class Charts.
