Acknowledgement
MacEwan University recognizes the importance of honouring and acknowledging
Treaty 6 Territory as Canada and Canadians work toward strengthening relations and
building bridges with all Aboriginal communities.
Treaty 6 was signed on August 23, 1876 at Fort Carlton in Saskatchewan. The total
area of the Treaty stretches from western Alberta, through Saskatchewan and into
Manitoba; and includes 50 First Nations. Provisions in the Treaty recognize the notion
of the medicine chest as well as the right to education (http://www.treatysix.org/).
MacEwan values the historical importance and offerings of the Aboriginal Peoples and
their cultures and appreciates the significant contribution that the Aboriginal
community engaged in the past as well as today and in the future. Honouring the right
of First Nations for self-determination must be respected; including the right to select
their own government and political structures, and to decide and lead the social,
cultural, spiritual, and economic progress of their people.
In the spirit of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, Faculty at
MacEwan have the responsibility to shape the views of student who will then share
knowledge with others and engage in care which honours diversity.

The Sculpture – Penta Cara
The new symbol of International Association for Human Caring (IAHC), in the
form of a trophy sized stainless steel sculpture, is named Penta Cara, and
represents five aspects of natural and exponential caring.
Created by world-renowned artist, Gloria Tew, and commissioned by the current
president of IAHC, Patrick Dean, Penta Cara is reminiscent of Fibonacci’s
mathematical spiral.
Presentations on the sculpture’s meaning, in terms of natural and exponential
caring, will be given during this conference, by Patrick Dean.

Sister Marie Simone Roach July 30, 1922 – July 2, 2016
Roman Catholic Nun, Registered Nurse, scholar, department chair, educator, ethicist, mentor, friend, and colleague. In 1980, the Canadian Nurses Association requested Sister Simone design a code of ethics to guide everyday practice for registered nurses in Canada; although revisions to the code have happened it continues to reflect her original intent. For her life of dedication to the profession and discipline of nursing she became a member of the Order of Canada in 2010; specifically for her advancement of nursing education and ethics.
She was born, Eileen Roach, on July 30, 1922, to parents Mary and Simon; her religious name is in honour of her parents. Growing up in New Waterford, Cape Breton Island, she remembers a lot of hard work with four sisters and six brothers, but also a home full of love. She became a nurse after graduating from St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing. The Sisters of St. Martha were in charge of the local hospital and their spiritual actions influenced her decision to join their congregation professing her final vows in 1950. However, this wasn’t the end of her formal studies – graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from St. Francis Xavier, a Master of Science in Nursing (Education) from Boston University, receiving her PhD in 1970 from Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., and finally a Postdoctoral scholar in ethics at Harvard Divinity School in Massachusetts.
Her scholarly pursuits began with understanding the contemporary ethics of human nature and caring. She recognized that, “caring is the most common, authentic criterion of humanness” (2002, p. 28). Her caring theory, Caring, The Human Mode of Being provided guidance to her question, “What is a nurse doing when she or he is caring?” (2002, p. 43). She has lectured internationally, her theory is the basis for curriculum, and her articles resonate and influence registered nurses in all practice areas.
Later on in life – centering prayer, baking, storytelling, and singing became central. She died peacefully at Bethany, the Sisters of St. Martha’s Motherhouse, in Antigonish, Nova Scotia surrounded by her community. She has influence so many of our lives, personally and professionally, and will be missed.
Submitted by Dr. Colleen Maykut (mentee, colleague, and friend)

IAHC President’s Message
Dear supporter of caring science in nursing,
“Rediscovering love and compassion in caring practice and in caring science” is the theme of the 2017 Annual Conference of the International Association for Human Caring (IAHC). In 1979, anthropologist and nursing theorist, Madeleine Leininger, identified human caring as the essence of the nursing profession, and with a group of like-minded nurses, founded IAHC. IAHC needs your support to sustain its growth into a future where threats to human caring, including dehumanizing technology and unequal distribution of healthcare in many parts of the world, have the potential to greatly reduce the healing effects of caring practice and caring science.
Patrick J Dean RN, EDD, OSTJ Clinical Associate Professor University of Minnesota School of Nursing International Association for Human Caring President
Dean of Faculty of Nursing – MacEwan University
I am so pleased to welcome you to the 38th Annual Conference of the (IAHC) International Association
for Human Caring! MacEwan University has a long-standing history of providing quality nursing
education that is relevant and reflective of current nursing practice in the province and beyond. Caring
is one of the core values of the Faculty of Nursing and through its practice, as a Faculty of Nursing we -
Inspire Nurses. Create Connections. Transform Lives. I am convinced that the Human Caring
conference will energize us, cause us to critically reflect as individuals, and challenge us to think about
and enhance our caring practice.

In 1978, the National Caring Research Conference was conceived and initiated by Dr. Madeleine
Leininger. The annual conference was designed to gather scholars together to share ideas, research,
and theories of care and caring. The core philosophy of the association is based on the belief that
caring is the essence of nursing and caring is the unique and unifying focus of the profession.
The national organization began in 1987 through the generosity of 42 charter members. In 1989,
with the encouragement of nurses from around the world, the conference association was changed
to the International Association for Human Caring (IAHC) Inc.
The central purpose of the IAHC, Inc. is to serve as an international, scholarly forum for all nurses
interested in the advancement of the knowledge of human care and caring within the discipline of
nursing. In 1993, Drs. Leininger, Delores Gaut, and Malcom MacDonald produced a video outlining
the history and growth of the Association. In 1994, Dr. Leininger established the Leininger Research
Scholarship Fund to assist in the financial support of nurse researchers studying the phenomenon of
human care and caring.
Some of the Member benefits include:
Complimentary subscription to four issues of the International Journal for Human Caring.
