Redhead Surf Life Saving Club

100% Patrol Attendance 2020 / 2021

Redhead Surf Life Saving Club has a commitment to provide patrols on every weekend

and public holiday during the season. Those patrols need a minimum of three Bronze

personnel, an IRB Driver and IRB Crew, a Patrol Captain and someone who is ARTC

qualified. Achieving this balance of skills and personnel takes a considerable amount of

effort on the part of the Club Captain and Vice Captains. Members who achieve 100%

of their rostered patrols are significant contributors to meeting the club’s patrolling

commitments.

The 100% Patrol Award is a prestigious award within the Redhead Surf Life Saving Club

that recognises the contributions made by those that attend all of their rostered patrols.

The Jeff Matthews trust generously contributes to this award each year as part of this

recognition.

Congratulations to the following members who have achieved 100% of rostered patrols

attendance award for the 2020-2021season.

Redhead SLS Life Membership Nominations

COLIN “Col” EKERT: Life Member Nomination Redhead SLSC 2021

Colin Ekert has been a member of the surf lifesaving movement clocking up close to 50

years of service since obtaining his Bronze Medallion in 1973 at Redhead SLSC. He has

also encouraged and supported his two sons during their time in Surf Life Saving.

Col is currently on the Redhead SLSC Executive Committee as Club Secretary and fulfils

all the administration roles that come along with this position with great efficiency. He

is responsible for recording and distribution Minutes of Meetings, recording & distribution

of correspondence in and out, emails, SLS Circulars etc. He is also a signatory for club

account payments and a support to all members of the Committee. Col was also Club

Secretary from 2002-2004.

Apart from his administrative skills, Col is also one of the Assistant Mobile Service Officers

and is at the Club every Saturday and Sunday morning during patrol seasons making

sure the IRB’s and ATV are all running smoothly. He does water safety for the Nippers in

the IRB most Sunday mornings or co-ordinates another driver if he is unavailable.

Col is a Long Service member who does not need to patrol anymore but chooses to do

so each year to keep the public safe. He is a reliable and proud patrol member. Col

did 56 patrol hours for Season 2020-21 and consistently obtains 100% patrol attendance.

Col has also been a huge part of establishing our Club Covid Policies & Procedures to

ensure we can open in a safe manner in accordance with State Government

guidelines including QR codes. He researches when restrictions have changed, informs

all members and updates signage etc. Col has been the Redhead SLSC Covid

Marshall every Friday night and Sunday afternoons when the Club has been open.

Because of his strict stance on compliance, members and guests are now automated

to check-in with their QR codes.

Redhead SLSC hosted the NSW State Titles for sand events in 2021 and Col was there

every day for 2 weeks from 5 am volunteering this time to help the carnival run smoothly

Redhead SLS Life Membership Nominations

RAY HENDERSON: Life Member Nomination Redhead SLSC 2021

I would like to put forward this reference for Ray Henderson as part of his Life

Membership nomination.

Ray Henderson has been a prominent part of the Redhead SLSC competition section

since the early 80’s. He represented the club at the State and National championships

every year since becoming a member in Open & Masters competition with plenty of

success.

Ray has held various positions within the club over his years of service but it his unofficial

role as the Grandfather of the Ski section that he is best known for. Ray has been a

permanent fixture at training sessions and carnivals for close to 40 years through great

times and tough times alike. He has worked on the clubhouse, built trailers, built ski

racks, repaired skis, towed trailers, driven buses, worked on fundraisers, put up endless

tents, made tough selections of teams and given plenty of advice over his time.

Making time for all this whilst travelling for work for many years.

Ray has always been the “go to” guy for anything and everything around the club. He

is the type of person that attracts people to our great club. He is always friendly,

welcoming, and accepting of all new members, can tell plenty of stories, have a laugh

and make everybody feel at home.

Ray Henderson is a true “Blue & Gold” Redhead SLSC member and I believe Life

Membership is a fitting honour.

Redhead SLS Junior Activities Life Membership Nominations

JASON HORADAM: JAC Life Member Nomination Redhead SLSC 2021

I would like to officially nominate Jason Horadam for JAC Life Membership. Jason has

been the JAC President for the last 5 years and took the role despite having no previous

experience on the JAC Committee and without having the previous JAC President to

help guide him through the role.

Since assuming the role as JAC President, Jason has grown the JAC Committee from a

small team of 5 to the large team of 11 now in place. Nipper numbers have increased

to over 400 in the 2019/2020 season with reduced numbers in the 2020/2021 season due

to Covid protocols implemented.

Jason has worked tirelessly with the Senior Committee and moved the focus of the

juniors back to ensuring the club continues to build the lifesavers and members of

tomorrow, not just the junior competition of today.

I believe Jason is worthy of the highest honour available to cement the hard work and

strong legacy he will leave behind.

Jason Barr

• Jason has rendered special service to the Redhead Junior Activities over a period of

not less than 7 years.

• Awarded his Bronze Medallion 15/6/2014 and is proficient with 100% patrol

Redhead Surf Life Saving Club - 2020/2021 Reports

President's Report 2020/2021

In the midst of these uncertain and unprecedented times due the effects of Covd-19,

with the impact that it has had on all of us, especially the Surf Club, I need to thank all

of those who have supported the Club and ensured that we can operate to the best of

our ability regardless of the conditions impacted upon us.

Firstly, I need to thank the Redhead SLSC Committee, in which it has been an honour to

be a part of this amazing team over the last season. Each member has worked

earnestly towards securing the Clubs present position in Surf Life Saving and for the

future. This team is united by their passion for Redhead SLSC and often sacrifices much

of their time, effort and finance to ensure that the Clubs operations are Flawless. Thank

You, Sharon Greenland, Colin Ekert, Scott Faraday-Bensley, Andrew Wright, Shauna

Abrahamson, Gail Henderson, Jenny Churchill, Luke Nolan, Adam Rees, Jason

Horadam, Hayley Churchill, Darren Mitchell, and Ashley Watts, as always, I greatly

appreciate your time, effort and support in all our endeavours for the Club.

To All of our Patrolling members who have collectively volunteered thousands of hours

to ensure our community can enjoy the beauty of our beach in safety, thank you,

especially those who achieved the 100%-mile stone. I also want to commend our

Emergency Call-Out team for the many times you have been called upon. Thank you

for willingness to be there at short notice when we need you the most.

I need to acknowledge and thank our staff, Function Manager Karen Davidson, and all

those who assist with the bar duties, you all work tirelessly towards ensuring that

everyone who hires our Function Room has a wonderful experience when at Redhead.

This is a major part of our structure, the income from these activities is essential to cover

the costs of patrolling the beach and meeting everyday expenses. It has been

extremely difficult time to manage with the many challenges Covid has bought. A

massive congratulations to all, especially with Redhead SLSC being awarded the Surf

Club of Choice for Weddings, well done,

My sincere thanks to our Building Committee and all those involved, particularly Tony

Greenland, Mike McKey, Peter Scott, Gary Council, Ross Clarke, Troy Blatchford, Mick

Sullivan and Hayley Churchill for all your efforts in securing grants and ensuring that the

works are done correctly and on time. We are in the process of some exciting new

renovations that would not be possible without your massive input. To Mark Sargent,

thank you for your time and expertise in securing the grants for these works, as always it

is greatly appreciated.

Much of what we do with the functions and around the Club wouldn’t be possible

without the incredible efforts of those who do so much behind the scenes. To Big Rossy,

Mike, Tony, Hendo, Clarkey, Steve and all the crew who give so much of their time, to

the Old Boys who’s passion never wains, led by Dickie Hadden and Charles Matthews –

thanks so much.

To our Competition Committee, Coaches and All who competed for Redhead over the

last season, led by Luke Nolan, Ray Terrill, Boyd Conrick, Peter Scott, Jacob Cerniauskas

and Anthony McCallum, who, with the support of Adam Rowe, Peter Collins and

Matthew Kent, have ensured that we have been able to compete at all levels with

outstanding results at Branch, State and Aussies. I would like to acknowledge the

fantastic performances, of all our athletes from the Boats to Ski’s, Boards, our Senior Iron

Persons, especially - Daniel Collins, Isaac Morgan, Isak Costello, Justin McMorland and

Nicola Owen, (whilst Nicola has been injured throughout the season) all have

competed, contributed and represented our Club in a manner that we can all be

proud of. To those competitors who give of their time to man the downstairs Friday bar

in the warmer months, thanks all.

Our Education Team led by Shauna Abrahamson have again set the standard in

Education with many in our Club achieving their Bronze and SRC this season, thank you

Shauna, Steve Foggett, Gail Henderson, Sally Blackburn, and in the IRB’s Iain Robertson,

Colin Ekert, Dean Curtis and everyone else, well done. A special mention to Steve

Foggett, who has been taking the SLS Education into the local schools, great work.

The JAC Committee led by Chairperson Jason Horadam, Coaches and Age Managers

have been remarkable in the most testing of years. It has been so encouraging to work

with people who have a desire and common goal to see that everyone is encouraged

and included. We have enjoyed some wonderful results over this past season from all

ages, especially from our U14’s, with the emergence of some wonderful youth who

have represented our club with the pride and passion that has bought them many

successes and representative honours. I’m looking forward to watching them develop

and grow in our sport. It has been an honour to work with Jason as JAC Chairperson

over the past years, whilst he is stepping down as Chairperson, he will be staying

involved and supporting incoming Chairperson - Jason Bar, thank you Jason.

The club lost several of it’s great characters over the past season with the passing of:-

Nance Adams (Life Honorary member)

Wally Berwick (former boatie)

Max Pasfield (former club caretaker)

Greg Bamforth (Life Member Redhead SLSC & Hunter Branch)

Peter Ramplin (Life Member & Club Legend)

John McNally (Club Supporter, Associate Member)

all have had a major influence on every one of us, our sport and SLS in general, we miss

them greatly, but their legacy and legend are with us forever.

Without the support of the clubs many sponsors, supporters and Lake Macquarie City

Council we would not enjoy the successes we do. I would like to personally thank our

major sponsors Matthews Family Trust, Jeff McCloy – McCloy Group, Insight Building,

Andrew Robertson Warners Bay Good Guys, Radford Shopfitters, Central Charlestown

Leagues Club, Club Redhead, Bale Boshev Lawyers, Matt Bale, John Bale, Mick Sullivan,

Scotts Plumbing, Renobuild, Troy Blatchford, Redhead Vehicle Repairs and Technotia. I

would also like to sincerely thank Mayor Kay Fraser and Lake Macquarie City Council,

State Member for Charlestown, Jodie Harrison, Pat Conroy, Federal Member for

Shortland, Henry and Rhonda Scruton and all the team from Hunter Branch.

The Club continues to receive distributions from Jeff Matthew’s estate which have been

deposited into a Managed Fund Portfolio managed by Forsythes Financial Advisors.

Proceeds from the estate have been invested in line with the terms of Jeff’s wishes. A

financial report on the Trust investment is available for members. I would like to

sincerely thank the Matthews family for their ongoing support of our club.

Club Treasurer’s Report 2020/2021

The 2021 AGM report represents my first full year as treasurer. With all of the challenges

that Covid has thrown up as well as some issues personally at home it has been a

challenging year. I would like to personally acknowledge the friendship and support of

my fellow board members. I would also like to acknowledge the support of you our

members who tirelessly support the club that we all love in so many and invaluable

ways and make Redhead Surf Lifesaving Club a key part of our community.

I’d also like to acknowledge the hard work of our staff including our function manager

Karen who managed the challenges of Covid and worked with our function bookings

during the challenges of the year.

We also face exciting times ahead with the work about to start on our building

renovations. A massive thanks go to Mark Sargent for his work in obtaining the grant

that will allow this work to proceed and to our building committee for co ordinating the

work. As has been advised, the club has secured funding for over $300,000 of the

budgeted $400,000 build. A part of the grant application process was that the club had

to contribute 25% of the cost.

2021 has ended up being a successful year financially with a profit for the year of

$187,000.

This result has been heavily impacted by Covid support of approximately $63K from the

Federal Government, State Government, and various grants from Surf Lifesaving NSW.

We would also not have been able to achieve this result without the continued support

of our sponsors (some new and some ongoing) including the following:

McCloy Group (funds to purchase a new surf boat)

Insight (sponsorship of our senior competitor squad)

Solo Resource (funds to purchase a ladies double ski)

Food Point

Blue Tongue Roofing

Technotia Labs

Functions and bar income, a mainstay of our normal income stream, were once again

heavily impacted by Covid and the various restrictions on numbers allowed in the club

at various stages during the year.

Our balance sheet also shows the club in a strong position in terms of assets and

liabilities with over $440,000 in term deposits. I note that some of this will need to be

utilised for the club’s share of the building costs.

Finally, with this being by first full year in preparing the accounts, I have attempted to

follow the systems set by me predecessor Maddie. It is possible and even probable that

some items have been miscoded and for this I apologise.

Finally, I would also like to thank our accountants and auditors KLM Accountants for

their assistance during the year and work collating and auditing these figures.

Club Captain’s Report 2020/2021

Once again, we had another outstanding year of providing a valued community

service in patrolling the best beach on the coast with no breaches. This is thanks to all

the patrol members who volunteer their time to patrol our beach and keep the

members of the public using the beach safe, in sometimes difficult conditions.

Due to the presence of COVID 19 there was a significant amount of extra work that was

required to create the safest possible conditions for our patrolling volunteers with the

introduction of COVID Safety Plans, and Beach Operations Plans that need to be

drafted and approved before the season could start. I would like to thank Steve

Foggett for his assistance in getting these plans together in time for the season to start.

All our patrolling members do a great job. The annual Peter Herden award for Patrol

Excellence, was this year awarded to:

Saturday – Blue 7 - Kaitlyn Summers, Bryony McDonell, Ashleigh Watts,

Kathleen Kennedy-Myers, Lily Kennedy-Myers, Darren Eckett, and Anthony Payten

Sunday – Gold 3 - Callen Britt, Melissa Jackson, Nicholas White, Cathy Di Pietro,

Scott Faraday, Carla Hodgetts, Dwight Hodgetts, Flynn Mills, Tully Elliott,

Charlotte Faraday-Bensley, Hannah Hodgetts, Toby Jackson, Liam Lieschke, and

Sommer Smith

The Redhead SLSC “Old Boys” Sharktower Trophy for the Patrol Person of the year was

awarded to Chris Bird. This year Chris continually sets a very high standard for other

members to follow in ensuring the beach is safe. Once again congratulations mate.

Well deserved.

Other members I would like to thank for their ongoing effort and support are Iain

Robertson, Col Ekert, Ross Clarke, and Dean Curtis. Without the extra thankless hours

these members contribute to ensuring we always meet our operational requirements

with serviceable IRB’s for patrol and Nippers, and the SSV (ATV). On that I would like to

congratulate Rossco as this year’s recipient of the IRB Recognition Award.

This season there was there were 57 members who have achieved 100% patrol

attendance. This is an outstanding effort that provides the backbone of our patrols and

represents a significant commitment of time by these members. My thanks for being so

reliable and making my job easier. A special thanks also for the following, who were the

top 10 patrollers for the season

1. Col Ekert 6. Lily Steffner

2. Glen Ramplin 7. Hayley Churchill

3. Brad Garnett 8. Stephen Foggett

4. Chris Bird 9. The Abrahamson Family

5. Gail Henderson 10. Sharon Greenland

Once again, the challenge for next season will be the manning Saturday patrols. Most of these

patrols are manned with our more experience and active reserve patrollers. These patrols and

are generally not as big as the Sunday patrols, which is a bit of a legacy from when Lifeguards

only worked the Saturday and not the Sunday. So, to all those Sunday patrollers, I’m putting out

an early shout-out to please consider a move to Saturdays.

Lastly, thanks to all those members who assist in the fundraising throughout the season. This

ensures that the club has the equipment it need to keep the beach safe.

Chief Training Officers Report 2020/2021

Well, what a rollercoaster ride the 2020/21 season was for us all including the Education and

Training team. COVID definitely created some interesting challenges for us all but these

challenges I feel confident have assisted our team to grow even stronger and resilient

along the way.

Our small team grew to include Sally Blackburn who has jumped in enthusiastically to

support Steve Foggett, Andy Wright and myself with the delivery of our Bronze Medallion

and SRC programs; we are also looking forward to working in the future with Lily Steffner

who has recently completed her trainers Award. Our IRB team has now added Steve

Foggett as an assessor joining Andy and of course our amazing team of trainers, Iain

Robertson, Dean, Col Ekert and Ross Clark with Iain also undertaking additional training to

assist us in IRB assessing. Steve Foggett is also in the process of being mentored in the

facilitation of First Aid. So as you can see although our team is small in numbers it is rapidly

growing in its capabilities.

I’d like to personally thank each and every one of these people for giving up their time

(and sometimes ridiculous times), braving the cold and crazy conditions, and the giving of

themselves so freely in sharing their experience and knowledge and supporting participants

throughout their journey with us- Thank you!

The start of the season also saw the official introduction of the newly updated 35th Edition

of the Bronze Medallion which saw an increased focus in online engagement as well as a

new structure for the delivery and assessment of both the Bronze Medallion and Surf Rescue

Certificates. Some of the key changes included the absorption of the Spinal Management

award into the Bronze along with HLTAID003 First Aid qualification. Whilst this represented a

steep learning curve for us all (especially whilst juggling full time work and family) we were

extremely lucky to have had the incredible ongoing support of Hunter Branch and our

Director of Education, Gail Henderson along the way (many zoom meetings over the off

season!).

Although COVD meant the implementation of risk management plans, changes to training

and assessment strategies, equipment wash downs etc. we were given the go ahead to

continue our training activities in August 2020. This meant that our Bronze squad that

commenced their training in Feb 2020 could finally finish what they had started! A huge

congratulations to this awesome groups and a big thank you for your patience along the

way.

This was the start of 4 squads to complete their SRC and Bronze training for the season

along with 3 First Aid courses and 2 IRB crew and driver programs!

Participants for the season:

Surf rescue Certificates: 11 Silver Medallion in Aquatic Rescue: 6

Bronze Medallions: 24 First Aid: 12 (plus 8 commercial)

IRB Crew: 6 Pain Management: 1

Silver Medallion in IRB Driver: 2 Probationary trainer: 2

Silver Medallion in Basic Beach Management: 8

The upcoming season already looks like another exciting yet challenging season with

preparations already in progress for the updating of the First Aid awards, COVID restrictions

to deal with and proficiency changes to be implemented, however, I look forward to

what’s to come and am especially excited about the further growth and development of

our section and also our club, working alongside an amazing and inspiring bunch of people

along the way!

JAC Chairperson’s Report 2020/2021

Redhead Nippers have had another wonderful year on our beach. Our numbers were

significantly reduced this year due to COVID and unfortunately, we couldn’t welcome

Under 6s or any new families to the club this past season. Regardless, we enjoyed good

conditions and excellent participation at beach days, training and carnivals.

I would like to congratulate and thank our Redhead Junior Activities Committee for yet

another very successful season. Our volunteers work hard to ensure that beach days,

proficiencies, training and carnivals run smoothly and it is wonderful to see that even

with smaller numbers of nippers this year, our parent support is growing. This year we

farewell some long-standing committee members and their families as they move into

the senior club. Thank you to; Roy and Kim Elliott; Andy and Kellie Wright; Mark and

Kristen Edwards; Brad and Heidi Garnett. You have given so much of your time for our

nippers over the years and I have appreciated how well you have contributed to the

effectiveness of our committee.

All carnivals, including Branch and State, were extremely well attended this year and

we received fantastic support from our parents and wider Redhead SLSC community in

providing officials and water safety personnel so that our nippers could compete.

The talent amongst our club was evidenced by our results at carnivals this season: 3rd

place at all carnivals including Branch Age Championships.

The State championships were very well attended by our competitors. It is wonderful to

see so many of our nippers in the younger age groups making finals and our Under 14

group proved themselves to be one of our most successful groups ever, winning many

medals between them and also at the Aussies carnival in April.

Thank you to Lisa Brown for her coordination of our carnival participating this year once

again and to everyone else that has assisted by officiating, doing water safety,

managing teams and packing up tents. We would not be able to send the numbers of

competitors that we do to carnivals without your assistance so thank you.

Redhead Nippers provides exceptional coaching, training and education. Thanks so

much to Mark, Ash, Isaac, Justin, Ray, Pete, Boyd, Adam and Troy for providing first-class

coaching for our kids in board, swim, running and pool rescue. The numbers continue to

grow at sessions and this is due to the care and enthusiasm that you put into sessions.

The committee has committed to providing a range of fundraising initiatives this year.

Our weekly BBQ, Bunnings BBQ, and sock fundraiser initiatives all contributed significant

funds to help with our initiatives.

I would also like to thank our sponsors A&J Air, East Lakes Swim Centre, Healthsave

Pharmacy Charlestown, Leisure Pools Newcastle, PL Britt Plumbing, Redhead Family

Dental, Redhead Vehicle Repairs, Regent St Physiotherapy, ASN Charlestown,

Renobuild Newcastle, Whitebridge Butchery and Foodpoint. Thank you so much for

getting behind Redhead Nippers and helping us to provide the equipment needed to

run our Junior Activities here at Redhead.

Redhead Surf Life Saving ~ 113th Annual Report 2020/2021 26 | P a g e

Finally, I’d like to thank the Redhead Senior Committee for their continuing to support

the Redhead Junior Activities Committee. We have an incredible partnership working

together under the umbrella of Redhead SLSC.

Our JAC AGM has been help and the new committee has been elected. I would like to

welcome the following people to the committee and request that the senior

committee endorses the election of these members:

Chairperson – Jason Barr

Vice President – Jason Horadam

Treasurer – Kendall Achurch

Secretary – Shelley Macadam

Registrar – Annie Griffiths

Uniform Coordinator - Karlee Davidson

Competition Coordinator - Lisa Brown

Fundraising – Phil Hofffman

Board Hire – Ash Clarke

Age Manager Coordinator – Jenni Barr

Water Superintendent – Adam Davidson

BBQ – Samantha Ott

Delegate to senior club – Jason Barr

Thanks to the whole nippers community for making the 2020/2021 season a wonderful

one for our kids despite the challenges. The Redhead Junior Activities Committee looks

forward to another great season in 2021/22.

Competition Report 2020/2021

There was a lot of uncertainty surrounding the competition section this season with the

ongoing Covid threat causing the postponement and cancellation of many carnivals.

I would like to start by thanking the committee for their unwavering support of the

competitors and ensuring all resources the club has access to were made available to

help these members represent the club and achieve personal goals.

Matt Kent, Pete Watts and Pete Collins were instrumental in the smooth operating of the

competition section.

The competition section would also like to thank our officials for volunteering their time,

without them our competitors would not be able to race. Thankyou Peta Owen, Gail

Henderson, Kelly Monger, Rachael Soars and Clive Higgins.

Andy Wright and Phil Hoffman transported the craft trailers to the Australian Titles with

Andy also fulfilling all of Redheads water safety requirements, so again thank you.

Shauna Abrahamson deserves some recognition for the tireless work she does always

going above and beyond ensuring competitors are proficient and have attained the

required awards to not only patrol but also compete.

A special thankyou must also go to Luke from Insight Building Services who once again

donated uniforms to the competition team.

Although we had a smaller team this season sectional captains, coaches and

competitors worked hard and some outstanding results were achieved.

Dan Collins represented Redhead in the Nutrigrain Ironman series and will compete

again in the coming season after requalifying with some incredible performances.

The Interstate was cancelled but an honorary NSW team was announced which

included 4 Redhead competitors Dan Collins, Tully Elliot, Kane Edwards and

Brodie Wright.

We have a dedicated and talented group of U/14s who competed at their first

Australian Titles with many finalists and medallists.

U/14 Female Ironperson - 2nd Tully Elliot

Ski Section Captains Report 2020/2021

The 2020/21 season has not had as many highlights on the Carnival results front as

former seasons but had plenty of success with the development of a new group of

paddlers starting Redhead’s next generation Ski Section.

Ray Tyrell has been tireless in helping with the development of our young competitors

Coaching sessions, Repairing Skis & getting sponsorship. Thanks Ray.

Whilst we didn’t have a big medal haul, we still had plenty competitors doing their best

& representing Redhead with some good results in finals at the NSW State & Australian

titles

Some of the NSW Titles highlights where in the girls Catlin Callahan in the Open

women’s single final then teaming with Danielle Radford in the women’s double final.

Sam Djordan & Adam Rowe where part of our bronze medal winning Taplin team. Sam,

Isak Costello & Justin McMorland where 5th in relay & we had 2 in the top 8 of the

men’s single ski.

Our top results at Aussies were Sam D, Isak C, & Justin M 7th in Open Relay & Sam & Isak

8th in Open Double.

Our Masters section once again won more medals than can be mentioned are the

corner stone of the Ski section & most consistent squad trainers.

Luke Nolan, Bryony McDonald, Nathan Stewart & Peter Watts need to be mentioned &

given a big THANK YOU for helping with Junior members.

Also, a massive thankyou to Solo Resource Recovery for the donation of the first Ladies

Double Ski to the Club, their generosity will go a long way to allowing our Ladies to be

competitive in competition and to Redhead Bowling Club for its support to help get

junior members onto Skis is greatly appreciated & needed.

Looking forward to a great 2021/22 season with all the fresh faces that will be part of

our squad. GO REDHEAD!!!

Peter Scott.

Beach Captains Report 2020/2021

Many Redhead competitors turned up throughout the winter of 2020 and presented for

Saturday afternoon fitness runs and continued that into summer, pounding the sand on

Friday afternoons, to help increase stamina and speed for their respective events. This

was evident in many team and multi-discipline events at the conclusion of the season,

none more so that the terrific sprint finish demonstrated by Tully Elliott to come from

behind to grab a deserved silver medal in the Australian under 14 Iron Person event.

In the 2km beach run, Jake Edwards was again a solid performer, getting 3rd at the

State Championships on home “soil” at Redhead Beach in the Under 17 2km Beach

Run. Regina Wright showed her experience and tenacity to finish 4th in the Open

Women’s 2km Beach Run, giving away quite a few years to the much younger

opposition. Great effort by both Redhead beach competitors.

Board Section Captains Report 2020/2021

This season, our board section was always going to be a challenge, having so many

junior members join the senior squad. Something the squad has struggled with over the

past few years is numbers coming through the ranks. Our squad of 5-6 paddlers for the

previous season had grown to become a squad of 20. It’s easy for me to say the 20/21

season was by far my favourite season to date.

The senior board squad has become what I’ve always wanted it to be – a bunch of

mates, enjoying training hard, having fun, and racing to the best of their ability for our

beloved Redhead SLSC. I have been so lucky to have had the opportunity to get to

know all squad members, and I’m so proud of every single one of them for everything

they have achieved throughout the year. The collective results the squad has achieved

over the year is better than anyone could have anticipated, from Hunter branch

medals, NSW state finalist, state medallist and finally state champions.

This year's Aussies was hosted by Maroochydore SLSC, on the Sunshine coast. Again, our

team succeed far beyond my expectations by making finals after gruelling elimination

heats. A major feat for a small club like Redhead. Our squad is made up of all different

abilities, and our biggest success story this season is the numbers we are getting

consistently at our training sessions.

The bond our small squad has grown into is everything Redhead Surf club is about. With

the success the board squad has had over the past season, I would like to say a big

thank you to the likes of

Justin McMorland, Brendan Ross, Ray Terrill, and Mark Ayre for all they do.

With so many great results over the past 12 months I will just mention NSW state and

Australian Championship results: -

Tully Elliot – 1st u/14 NSW female board title

Brodie Wright – 1st u/14 NSW male board title

Brodie Macadam – 3rd u/14 NSW male board title

Brodie Wright, Brodie Macadam, Kane Edwards – 1st u/14 NSW male state board relay

title

Brodie Wright/Kane Edwards – 2nd u/14 NSW male board rescue

Kane Edwards – 2nd u/14 Australian male board title

Brodie Wright, Brodie Macadam, Kane Edwards – 2nd u/15 Australian male board relay

title (racing an age group up)

Justin McMorland – 3rd Australian open male board title

20/21 was such a great season for us as a group. I can’t wait to see what we can

achieve this coming season.

Ironperson Report 2020/2021

Redheads Iron person squad has gone from strength to strength in the past 12 months.

With the help from Boyd Conrick, and Brendan Ross throughout the season we have put

the squad through a weekly session held on a Saturday morning.

This season being the most consistent with numbers within the squad, having 10-20

people showing up for the entire season shows we are on the right path. Racing this

year was tough for all with Covid playing part in the cancellation of carnivals.

The season kicked off with the Nutri-Grain Iron person trials - Daniel Collins, Isak Costello,

and Justin McMorland represented the club which seen Daniel, and Isak qualify for the

final at the trials. Daniel put in a brilliant performance which seen him place second

overall at the trial and earned himself a spot on the professional series.

Throughout the series Daniel raced for the total of the 6 rounds and earned himself a

6th place overall, an awesome effort. Coming into the State and the Australian titles

the squad was primed for a great campaign.

At the state titles in the U/14 men’s we had an amazing four competitors in the final,

which seen young gun Kane Edwards take the race out to become the State Champ.

A gruelling 8 weeks between the State and Australian titles seen the squad stay focused

for the upcoming titles which we had great success.

The U/14’s once again stealing the show and coming up with some minor place medals

in both the female and male Iron person events. In the u/14 make we had again 4 boys

in the final – Brodie wright, Kane Edwards, Elliot Graham, and Rory Garnett. The race

seen as Brodie Wright having a blinder of a race and finishing in an amazing 2nd place.

In the female U/14 Iron person we had Tully Elliot qualify for the final. After some tough

luck in her pet event the Board race, she picked herself up for the final. With a hard

swim in tricky conditions, Tully entered the water in the for the last leg in 15th place and

threw down one of the gutsiest paddle in an Iron person I’ve ever seen, she was

awarded with a second place at the Australian titles.

I need to thank Luke Findlay and his company Insight Building Services for their

extremely generous support of the Club and in particular the Ironpersons, Luke’s support

has allowed the team to compete at the highest of levels and were all in gratitude to

him, thank you Luke.

In closing, Congratulations to all squad members over the past season, I can’t wait to

see what the future has in store.
