Redesigning Podiatry Services in West Cheshire
Consultation and gathering views:8th December 2014 – 1st March 2015
Why do we need to make changes?• Population and its needs are changing• Latest advice can’t be met (NICE
guidance)• Increased risk of foot
ulcer/amputation• Waiting times long• Demand exceeds commissioned
service• No cut to existing funding
What do we want to achieve?
For high need improve:• access/frequency appointments• outcomes
Provide:• clear eligibility criteria• self-help information• appropriate signposting
Patient stories
Samiya active 68 year-old who has type-2 diabetes and some neuropathy
Bill 82 year-old widower, finds it difficult to bend, to cut his thickened toenails
Jason 24 year-old young man who enjoys sport, has infected in-growing toenail
Options and what would this mean for Samiya, Bill and Jason
Option 1:Continue with the current NHS service/eligibility criteria.
Option 2:Improve the current NHS service for people with high level medical and/or podiatric needs
Discharge people with low level needs and signpost to support.
Option 3:Option 3 is the same as Option 2 plus
For current service users, if they have podiatric needs they would continue to receive appointments.
Under Option 1: • waiting times continue to increase (all)• to avoid prolonged antibiotic therapy and waiting times for
surgery (Jason)• adversely impact quality of life (Samiya and Jason)
Under Option 2: • improve access/ frequency appointments (Jason & Samiya)• improve outcomes (Jason & Samiya)• clear eligibility criteria (all)• self-help information (all)• appropriate signposting (Bill)
Under Option 3: • in 5-10 years’ time some positive impacts
