Dear Friends: In the coming year, we are going to explore cooperative ministry with St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Santa Ana. It might be limited joint activities or it could lead to being a two point parish. We are not looking to merge with them. So, what would a cooperative ministry look like?

-It all began with “tamales and testimony.” We will continue to schedule those events. The profits help fund members of St. Peter’s to work at the Spanish speaking Cursillo weekends. -We are exploring sharing two interns. If they could share housing, it would reduce the cost and enable us to provide more staffing between the two congregations at a cheaper cost. -We have several Spanish speaking members who could help at St. Peter’s, and their members could help us plan new outreach programs to Latino people here. -Right now their pastor is leaving and they cannot afford a full-time pastor. We will explore whether or not we can put together a staff that can be shared between both congregations. This is the most “controversial” issue. I would still be the primary pastor here at Our Redeemer, but we will explore possibilities of shared staffing. Anything we do would need congregational approval. -We would explore possible ways to consolidate administrative costs to reduce the cost to both congregations. As we go into the future there are certain realities in our community. Southern California and Garden Grove is becoming more Asian and Latino. Millennials are not joining churches like previous generations. St. Peter’s is one of the few Lutheran churches that has had success in reaching out to the Latino community. Cooperative ministry has the potential to help both congregations respond positively to the changes in our communities. Personally, this would mean more administrative responsibilities for me, but the potential for expanding two ministries is invigorating and exciting to me. At this point, nothing is set in stone. As we explore possibilities as a church council, we will keep

the congregation informed and get feedback and approval if and when any concrete changes are

suggested.

Blessings, Pastor Brian
