PRESIDENT’S REPORT We had a very short General Meeting first up this year on 6 February. Plenty of people renewed their membership, which is pleasing. A reminder to everyone else who has not yet renewed - if you haven’t paid your membership please do so through Paddy who will be only too happy to help. He will accept: cash, bank transfers, and cheques.
Two new members signed on at the February BBQ. We met Rob and Jennifer at the Redcliffe RSL during our coffee sojourn after the February General Meeting. A big Redcliffe TPI family welcome to both of you - I am very sure you will enjoy our company. Your Committee resumed meeting at the end of January and we are very keen to get going this year. We will continue to
focus on looking after and supporting our Redcliffe TPI Family, and that includes making sure we have:
• friendly and safe meetings;
• an active welfare team;
• an enjoyable social calendar; and
• good communication. We had a few giveaways at the General Meeting including 2016 photo CDs, new business cards, and a list of our proposed Social events for this year. We should have these items available for you again at the March meeting. We have placed a copy of the Social Calendar in this copy of the Commscord. As usual, the Social Calendar has some dates listed as “TBA” - these dates will be finalised closer to the event. Many thanks for Beryl getting this program together.
Just by way of explanation, with the 2016 Photo CD I included a folder for the Norfolk Island trip, but did not receive any photos so unfortunately that folder is empty. The events that are covered on the CD include the following:
• Anzac Day
• Vietnam Veteran’s Day
• Remembrance Day
• Freedom Of The City – Redcliffe
• Sausage Sizzles
• Army Band “Rat Pack” Concert
• Caloundra Races
• Car Challenge
• Christmas In July
• Christmas Party
• Christmas Picnic
• TPI BBQs
• Dusty Dinner
• Mamma’s Dinner
• Maritime Museum
• Mon Repos Turtles
• Outback Spectacular
• BBQ for Trigger’s Big Trek
On January 10 we again occupied Jamieson Park where we had a sunny day and a pleasant sea breeze. By way of a minor personal complaint, it has been too dry for too long around our suburb. However, there are rain clouds on the horizon, so by the time you read this it may have rained. Anyway, I digress, we certainly had a great BBQ, and here are a few photos from the day. In photo no.3 the chefs are
hard at it - thanks fellas, as usual you did us proud. Some areas (like this one) that were in the shade earlier in the day, ware found to be in the sun later on, so some of us had to move.
That probably explains why some set up in the shade on arrival.
I know who the three hard working chefs were - but which one of the other two was the head chef?
Our Pokémon-hunting pirate was in action at the usual Jamieson Park Poke-Stops. My grandkids are amazed at Darryl’s expertise. At that point in time Darryl had 72 Pikachu and 5 Raichu among his haul of many hundreds of Pokémon captures. A little later there was some earnest discussion going on between these two avaricious Poke-hunters. And, if you don’t understand the Pokémon thing, fear not, your grandkids will probably be able explain it for you.
As an aside, for those who have been on the ground in the tropics, you will have noticed the absence of any wait-a-whiles at Jamieson. However, we did find a drop-bear stranded on the roof, or at least that’s what Bruce Cox told me.
I know some of you don’t like others giving you injections, and I don’t blame you – I used to give my own in the army. But if you are aged between 70 and 79, you should consider this one. Quite a while ago, the federal government introduced a free vaccination for shingles. My GP told me that, due to popular demand, the free vaccine has since been restricted to people
between 70 and 79. I had mine earlier in February, and yes, my GP does a good needle job. We have included a blurb on the shingles vaccine in this Commscord, and if you are in your 70s you might consider asking your GP about it.
On 13 February we recommenced sizzling snags at Bunnings; but the snags weren’t the only things getting hot. We had a great day but it was very, very hot and humid, especially for those who were sizzling snags in the sauna-like sweatshop.
Maintaining hydration was especially important, and I think we all came through OK. We have extra special thanks for all our volunteers that day - we hope you didn’t lose too much fluid. We had the usual foursome rostered on for setting up and “holding the fort” on the first shift of the day. Here we can see three of them having a jolly good time. From the left they were, relaxing, laughing, and supervising.
We had a couple of new volunteers join our Wednesday night RSL raffle team. On 15 February Danny and Shirley came along to learn the ropes, with Clarence and Karen showing them how to have a successful evening – much appreciated.
On 23 February we had a great lunch at the Belvedere Hotel Woody Point. The food was fantastic and the company even better. I am starting to run out of room here, so I have included only three photos - the rest will be 2017 Photo CD. As you can see, we had a good time.
How did you go with our first Occupation Quiz? I copped some minor flak for the Army bias in the first quiz (note to self - consult with my Navy and RAAF colleagues before any future military-type quizzes). Anyway, for the remainder of the year there should be no further military bias.
On 14-16 March a group is off to Mount Tambourine for a two-night bus trip. Beryl has put together a very good itinerary with a number of interesting options including;
• Lunch at Eagle Heights Resort;
• Visit to Jasmin Aromatiques;
• Dinner at Clancy’s Irish Pub;
• Hot Air Ballooning;
• Tour of Witches Falls Winery;
• Visit to Cedar Creek glow worm caves;
• Visits to a brewery, a distillery, some shops, and (of course) eateries;
• Dinner at St Bernard’s Hotel;
• Enjoying a Skywalk; and
• Lunch at Yatala on the way home. This should be a good trip with plenty of interesting things to do! Unfortunately I am not able to go, so I would appreciate a few people taking photos and giving me the electronic images for our 2017 Photo CD. I have previously provided some background on Mount Tambourine, so I won’t provide any more info on that location. However, did you know that the options beryl has given us are high on the tourist list of things “to do” in that area?
One option is to go aloft with a hot air balloon – apparently it is an ideal way to spend the morning followed by a delicious breakfast. If the conditions are right, you should experience seeing the first dawn light, Lamington National Park, and the Gold Coast skyline. It’s an amazing panorama that changes each season and each day.
Another option is to visit the glow-worm caves. I will limit my “did you know” to the following. Glow-worms are the larvae of a small fly. The larval stage is the only stage in their life cycle that can glow. The adults are delicate flies that do not have working mouthparts, and as such, only live for a small number of days (females two days, males six days).
And another option is to visit Witches Falls Winery, which is located on Tamborine Mountain. Here they produce three distinctive ranges: Granite Belt, Wild Ferment, and Prophecy. Being a non-drinker these days, I can’t vouch for any of these; however, I am informed that each of these wines provides a unique look at different styles and
practices in both viticulture and winemaking. Apparently they have achieved good results on the National Wine Show Circuit.
Dinner at St Bernards Hotel should be enjoyable. It is situated in an ideal position. Located on the edge of an ancient volcanic escarpment, the hotel commands wonderful views of the Tamborine Valley overlooking Guanaba Gorge, Moreton Bay, the Gold Coast skyline
and the Pacific Ocean. On one hand you have the sea views and on the other you have the invigorating air of the mountains. So make sure you enjoy some country hospitality with fine dining and spectacular views.
This eco-adventure option provides a unique way to explore the rainforest canopies. It is set in 30 acres of privately owned rainforest beside the crystal clear rock-pools of Cedar Creek. The walk departs directly from the Eco Gallery, is about 1.5 miles long and takes about 45 minutes at a leisurely pace.
There is a combination of forest floor trails, 300 metres of high-tech steel bridges through the highest points of the upper canopy, and a 40 metre cantilever bridge that soars 30 metres above the creek and rainforest below. If you don’t like heights, just remember, don’t look down - look straight ahead. So there you have it folks. Just know I am extremely jealous that I can’t come with you, but I do hope you enjoy the whole experience. Please take plenty of photos, and please give me an electronic copy so that I might share your adventure with others on our 2017 photo CD.
This month I received an update on a few issues from Chris Richards (TPI State President) as follows: DVA Transport - DVA advises that in the event of an early morning transport booking or one over the weekend it may be prudent to contact DVA beforehand to find out the contact number and booking reference
for the provider. That way the veteran can have a point of contact if the vehicle is late or they want to check beforehand that the booking information is correct. DVA should be able to provide the relevant info the work day afternoon before the schedule booking. Travel Card - I have had contact from Translink regarding the TPI Public Transport Travel Card. All is good but they're looking at making it easier to renew and its length of validity and whether photos are necessary etc. Anyway I have asked to be kept in the loop but if you're aware of any issues with the card thus far then let me know. Queensland TPI Journal - Should you wish to suggest an article or provide an item for our bi-annual journal then please advise our editor George Mialkowski. Members can also write letters to the editor, which can be published. George does all the leg work with the journal and is keen to ensure it is of interest to members. If you know of a local firm etc that may interested in advertising then please let George know. TIP / ATDP - ATDP is replacing TIP Information has been sent to all social centres re the updated training requisites for those carrying our advocacy duties. Please liaise directly with the program managers should you desire training or RPL. It should be noted that no accreditation is needed for run of the mill welfare work like hospital visits etc but anyone interested can register to receive updates and reviewing information on their website. Korean War Ambassador For Peace Medal - Korean war veterans are entitled to apply for this medal struck by the Korean Govt. Here is the contact:
Mr. Yang Kim (Secretary AQKV) Mobile: 0419 919 034 Email: [email protected]
State Management Committee Meeting - The next SMC meeting is scheduled for 22 Feb, and if you want something listed on the agenda then please advise the Secretary. Federation Meeting - The next federation meeting is in March. George Robinson and myself will be attending. I’m still in the process of ringing around centres and hope to catch up with all soon. Regards Chris Richards State President
The Australian Army employed five cannibals as scouts. During their first training exercise in Shoalwater Bay, the CO welcomed the cannibals and said, "You're all part of our team now. We will compensate you well for your services, and you can eat any of the rations that the soldiers are eating. But please don't indulge yourselves by eating a soldier." The
cannibals promised not to. Four weeks later, the CO returned and said; "You're all working very hard, and I'm very satisfied with all of you. However, one of our Sergeants has disappeared. Do any of you know what happened to him?" The cannibals all shake their heads; “No”. After the CO left the leader of the cannibals turned to the others and said; "Which of you idiots ate the Sergeant?" A hand was raised hesitantly, to which the leader of the cannibals replied; "You fool! For four weeks we've been eating Lieutenants, Captains, and Majors and no one noticed anything, then YOU had to go and eat an NCO!" And remember; good punctuation can go a long way – is it “Let’s eat, sir” or is it “Let’s eat sir”. Take care,
Phil
