STEPPIN' OUT

"The highest level of leadership is service. The highestlevel of service is leadership. At the highest level, serviceand leadership become one.  Serve to lead." Building on Baylor's mission and human flourishing initiative,Steppin’ Out provides students with the opportunity to practiceleadership through direct service. The program brings studentstogether to serve and give back to the Waco community. Everysemester, we receive stories describing the effect the day has had onparticipants. These stories and connections continue to inspire theplanning committee to do more.

LET'S STEPOUT!

Nearly 2,000 volunteers pouredinto the Greater Waco area,contributing over 4,000 hours ofservice at more than 65 sites! Volunteers also collected 5.76tons of trash and brush fromacross the city. Surplus snackswere donated to Baylor's on-campus pantry, The Store. SPOTLIGHT: Harmony Schoolof Innovation sent a team ofstudents to serve with membersof Baylor's Pre-OptometryProfessional Society and theNational Society of CollegiateScholars.

A newsletter is a regularly distributed publication that is generally aboutone main topic of interest to its subscribers. Newspapers and leaflets aretypes of newsletters. Newsletters are published by clubs, churches, societies, associations, andbusinesses—especially companies. Google's definition of a newsletter is, "abulletin issued periodically to the members of a society, business, ororganization." Newspapers and leaflets are types of newsletters. Some newsletters are created as money-making ventures and sold directlyto subscribers. Sending newsletters to customers and prospects is acommon marketing strategy, which can have benefits and drawbacks. 

MAKING ANIMPACT

Members of Baylor StudentGovernment and the MedicalService Organization served atNew Zion Missionary BaptistChurch. Congregation membersbegan the work by repairing thefellowship hall's exterior. Volunteers removed brush,trimmed trees and painted thefellowship hall in preparation forthe church's 132nd anniversary. A fresh coat of paint and a ton ofelbow grease! Members of AlphaKappa Alpha, Phi Kappa Chi, andSIGHT worked together to clean,organize, garden and paint atEdwards Chapel AME Church. Several rooms, including the newchildren's playroom and thefellowship hall, received a newlook.

Shout out to a large collection oforganizations! Baylor MedicalStudent Association, Impact LLCBUMEDS, Tri Delta, Sigma AlphaEpsilon, Alpha Phi, Beta UpsilonChi, Chi Omega, FIJI, andPsychology Club workedtirelessly to clean Indian SpringPark, Bledsoe-Miller Park, Cameron Park, the riverwalk/Brazos River, and an areanear Rapoport Academy PublicSchool. Volunteers collectedhundreds of bags of trash andbrush from these areas.

BEHIND THESCENES

Each semester, the Steppin' Out planning committee works with ourcampus and community partners to craft the Steppin' Out Day of Service. Members meet with home owners and non-profits, conduct siteinspections for all locations, fund raise, purchase tools and supplies, andrecruit volunteers. Our committee is small but mighty! Following the dayof service, committee members work to complete any sites that were leftunfinished. Fall 2019 Steppin' Out Planning Committee: Angie Salguero (director), AaronPatel (community outreach director), Jun Chan (volunteer recruitment director),Tiffani Weir (financial chair); Ethan Arredondo (community outreach apprentice);Will Son (liaison officer), Sutton Cameron, Ben Butler, Elaine Taylor, MarcusFranklin (Graduate Apprentice), Andy Taylor (Graduate Apprentice), DoriannBeverly (advisor).
