he PBS children’s educational television programs that your donations fundare well known for effectively teaching basic reading, writing, math andsocial skills to pre-school and early elementary aged children. Supplementalweb pages and downloadable interactive games for mobile devices from

VegasPBS.org expand these programs to all the “viewing screens” available to today’syoung children.

Seventeen years ago, Vegas PBS beganworking with the Clark County SchoolDistrict to produce and broadcast summerschool high school courses to serve olderchildren who needed additional credits tograduate on time. That effort eventuallybecame the Nevada Learning Academy, housed in our building, which today is thestate’s largest online middle and high school.

Our efforts to use educational technologyto improve both school readiness and highschool graduation rates in Nevada are longstanding and are now grouped under the American Graduate banner. Nevada continues tohave the highest school dropout rate in the nation. Happily, this has begun to change withnumerous reforms begun under the recent superintendent’s leadership along withincreased corporate and nonprofit involvement and innovative program services providedby Vegas PBS’ American Graduate efforts.

Vegas PBS was one of small group of stations chosen by the Corporation for PublicBroadcasting to be a Community Hub for the national American Graduate Project from2012-14, and we have just received a continuation grant for 2014-2016. Vegas PBS imple-mented the project working with the generous support of partners ranging from MGMResorts International Foundation, Caesars Foundation, NV Energy, United Way, R & RPartners Foundation, Metro Chamber of Commerce, and many others. The project seeksto highlight the seriousness of the dropout problem while providing access to resourcesthrough online materials and local television programs for families, students, teachers andothers in need.

In the next two years, Vegas PBS will use these grant funds to produce and broadcaststay-in-school PSAs, distribute 30 hours of programs on dropout issues and solutions, recruit reading and math mentors and provide preparation training. We will offer coursesfor teachers highlighting classroom best practices, extensively promote PBS resources forEnglish Language Learners, and support early childhood literacy camps using videos andbooks with familiar PBS characters. The power of the Vegas PBS educational programs thatyour gifts make possible is multiplied by these grant-funded “boots on the ground” out-reach activities. We are pleased to partner with so many other organizations seeking toimprove Nevada’s high school graduation rates.

More than four decades of 20th-centuryAmerica are reflected through the eyes ofphotographer and photojournalist DorotheaLange (1895 – 1965). Known for her power-ful images from the Great Depression,Lange’s haunting “Migrant Mother" remainsemblematic of that period. National aware-ness of that public crisis began in 1936,when Lange’s photographs of a poverty-stricken mother of seven, stranded in a pea-picker’s camp in California were published.

In 1941 Lange was awarded a GuggenheimFellowship, but she gave up the award inorder to document the internment ofJapanese Americans after the U.S. entered

World War II. Her photos, taken on assign-ment by the agency leading the internment, the War Relocation Authority, wereimpounded by the U.S. Army. As Americaemerged into a world power, Lange bore wit-ness to mass migration, increasing urbaniza-tion and the cost of war at home, bringingsubjects alive, transmitting raw emotionsand capturing the human condition.

This film is personally and intimatelymade by Lange’s granddaughter – Emmyaward-winning cinematographer DyannaTaylor – who began her artistic awarenessand vision literally at Lange’s feet. She com-bines family memories and journals withnever-before-seen photos and film footage tobring Lange's story into sharp focus. hronicle the triumphs and challenges of the 100-year history of Naval avia-

tion in this absorbing documentary. This special encompasses a century of

technological, strategic and social advancements, from the first wobbly glid-

ers to modern supersonic jets, from racial integration to the

introduction of women in combat. To tell this story, the film deftly inter-

weaves archival footage, interviews with historical and military experts,

contemporary footage of cutting-edge aircraft and insights from today's

“Top Gun” fighter pilots. Tribute is also paid to Naval aviation’s visionaries,

pioneers and risk-taking aviators, past and present.

The program begins and ends with the next generation of pilots working

to hone their skills, in all kinds of weather, day and night, to land a jet safe-

ly on an aircraft carrier in the middle of the ocean. This death-defying feat, first achieved in

1911 by Eugene Ely, cleared the path for the development of a powerful new tool for ensur-

ing both the safety and security of the nation and peacekeeping.

Despite being viewed by some over the years as impractical, extravagant or obsolete,

Naval aviation has struggled to remain relevant in the face of competing technologies — the

nuclear bomb and automation — and even budget pressures. In the face of these threats,

Naval aviation changed the face of America’s wars — from its heyday in the Pacific Theater

during World War II, and later, Korea and Vietnam, to its rediscovered utility for reconnais-

sance during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Follow the progress of naval aviation, from the age

of nuclear terror to the asymmetrical warfare, including the long, difficult ground wars still

taking place in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Secrets of the Dead: Lost Ships of RomeAugust 20 at 10 p.m.

In 2009, archaeologists discovered fiveRoman shipwrecks off the coast ofVentotene, a small Italian island with anotorious past. The vessels’ well-preservedcargo of exotic goods indicates that theseships sank to the seabed intact andupright. These sunken treasures are pro-viding researchers with insight into thewreck, how the Romans lived, andVentotene’s intriguing past. The islandserved as a vacation resort for Rome’semperor but it became a kind of ancientAlcatraz when the Emperor Augustusimprisoned his own daughter there foradultery, or as more recent research sug-gests, for political intrigue against herfather. This past summer, a team of explor-

through a bankruptcy proceeding, we nowneed to consider non-spousal IRA benefici-aries more carefully. Specifically, owners oflarger IRAs concerned about asset protec-tion for their beneficiaries should reconsid-er outright bequests. There are two alterna-tives.

The first and best option is to create a“see-through trust.” This trust specifies whothe beneficiary is and incorporates theappropriate language to allow for thestretch IRA option. Stretch IRAs allow thenon-spousal beneficiary to take therequired minimum distribution over theirlife expectancy. Utilizing the advantages ofthis trust option, the beneficiary should be

erhaps the largest assets mostpeople own outside their homeare those held in their IndividualRetirement Accounts (IRAs).

Many of us view IRAs as simple vehicles todefer income. When we retire, we beginwithdrawing funds from our IRAs as ordi-nary income. Typically, we name beneficiar-ies to receive the IRA upon our death—thisis what is called an inherited IRA.Sometimes the beneficiary is a spouse, sometimes not. Regardless, this is oftenwhere our IRA planning ends.

However, in light of the recent SupremeCourt case that ruled in favor of a creditorto claim the assets of an inherited IRA

protected from creditors by use of thetrust’s spendthrift clause, which states thatthese creditors cannot attach or collect ajudgment against the trust for the beneficia-ry’s personal claims. Another option for thecharitably-minded individual is to create aCharitable Remainder Trust (CRT). Oncethe IRA owner dies, the CRT is automatical-ly funded and distributions to the benefici-ary begin according to the owner’s wishes. This also allows for protection of the benefi-ciary by the spendthrift clause.

While many non-spousal beneficiaries ofIRAs many not have creditor issues, aninformed IRA owner should plan for theproper disposition of his/her assets regard-less. Keeping Up AppearancesSaturday, August 2 at 8 p.m. on Vegas PBS Channel 10

he laughs continue this month as we bring the very first season of one of the most

popular Britcoms ever made. Hyacinth Bucket (pronounced “bouquet”) goes to

incredible lengths in her quest for perfection. Hers is a spick-and-span house. Her

downtrodden husband, Richard (Clive Swift), acts as chauffeur in their immaculately

kept car. Even the empty milk bottles sparkle on the doorstep after their obligatory rinse in

the dishwasher. She is disgraced, however, by the rest of her family who are as common as muck.

Sister Daisy (Judy Cornwell) and her husband, Onslow (Geoffrey Hughes), are out-and-out slobs.

And her elderly father is a lecherous drunk, given to cycling stark-naked down by the canal. In

this week’s episode, Daddy’s encouragement of her brother-in-law Onslow jeopardizes Hyacinth’s

social standing at a church function.

The Dust Bowl (Part 2)Thursday, July 31 at 9 p.m. on Vegas PBS Channel 10 It was the worst man-made ecological disaster in American history, when the fren-zied wheat boom of the “Great Plow-Up,” followed by a decade-long drought duringthe 1930s, nearly swept away the breadbasket of the nation. Vivid interviews with 26survivors of those hard times, combined with dramatic photographs and seldom-seenmovie footage, bring to life stories of incredible human suffering and equally incred-ible perseverance. The documentary is also a morality tale about our relationship tothe land that sustains us – a lesson we ignore at our peril. In part two this week, experience the gradual relief as the families of the plains seek new lives inCalifornia, and government conservation efforts – and a break in the drought in 1939– eventually stabilize the soil and bring the farms back to life, but with dangers ofanother Dust Bowl facing future generations.

Dick Cavett’s WatergateFriday, August 8 at 9 p.m. on Vegas PBS Channel 10

ommemorating the 40th anniver-

sary of the resignation of President

Nixon, this riveting special

explores the slow-moving devas-

tating crisis that changed America forever. As a

result of the complicated, but dramatic, tale of

a criminal conspiracy to cover up misdeeds by

President Nixon and his top advisers – there was

a sense that the government was in danger of

collapsing under the weight of the scandal.

From 1972 to 1974 the Watergate scandal was

frequently a part of “The Dick Cavett Show,” as

he interviewed nearly every major Watergate

figure as the crisis unfolded. This program doc-

uments the scandal in the words of the people

who lived it: from the botched burglary at the

Democratic National Headquarters, to the

must-see TV of the daily Congressional

Watergate hearings, culminating with

the resignation of the President of

the United States on August 9, 1974.

The Search for Josiah Henson, The Man Behindthe Story of Uncle Tom’s Cabin:A Time Team America PresentationTuesday, August 19 at 8 p.m. on Vegas PBS Channel 10 This fascinating series plunges the viewer into the grime and glory of real-life archaeology:epiphany and exhaustion, discovery and disappointment. Through the dirt, the sweat, the dustand the rain, archeologists explore the mysteries of the past through what they find buriedbelow the ground. This week, Josiah Henson’s 1849 autobiography inspired Harriet BeecherStowe’s novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin and galvanized abolitionists. But for 30 years, he wasenslaved here, on what was once a 270-acre plantation run by Isaac Riley. An acre of land andan old house are all that remain. The team descend on a upscale DC suburb, digging for cluesbeneath the manicured lawn and peeling back layers of the old kitchen floor to tell the storyof one of the most important Americans of the 19th century.

FRONTLINE: TheRetirement GambleTuesday, August 19 at 10 p.m.on Vegas PBS Channel 10 Ten trillion dollars in Americans’ retire-ment savings are invested in large andsmall accounts managed by banks, broker-ages, mutual funds and insurance compa-nies. But whether your IRA or 401K willassure a safe retirement is largely a gam-ble. Using his own retirement fund as acase study, correspondent Martin Smithundertakes an investigation that hasimplications for every working American.Through interviews with Wall Street exec-utives at the helm of the mutual fundindustry, professionals of all ages who aretrying to navigate the retirement crisis, and current and former financial adviserswho may or may not have their clients’best interests at heart, he investigates therise of the 401(k) – a product Americansbuy without knowing its true cost. The pro-gram also reveals how fees, self-dealingand kickbacks bring great profits to WallStreet while imperiling the prospects of asecure future for individuals.

My Brother the JihadistThursday, August 21 at 10 p.m. on Vegas PBS Channel 10

hat turns an ordinary man into an extremist? In this disturbing documentary,

British filmmaker Robb Leech sets out to understand why his brother has fun-

damentally changed his life and beliefs. Like himself, Leech's step-brother

Richard Dart was an ordinary white middle-class boy from an English seaside

town and as youths, they were almost inseparable. But then Dart moved away, and the family

learned via a press story that he'd become a radical Islamist, changing his name to Salahuddin.

The film follows Dart to demonstrations, gatherings and into conversations with like-minded

Islamists. He begins to use the name Salahuddin al-Britani, and makes highly-critical comments

and criticisms to Leech about persons and life in Britain, believing that Britain should be subject

to Sharia law. In April 2013, Dart was sentenced in the Old Bailey to six years in prison for terror-

ist offenses.

This special observes the artist at work with his team ashe conceives and creates his most ambitious exhibition to date, Chihuly at the deYoung. This 2008 exhibition included 11 galleries of new and archival works repre-senting the breadth and scope of the artist's creative vision during the last fourdecades. From the Mille Fiori (a 56-foot garden of glass) to the Saffron Tower (a30-foot neon sculpture), Chihuly's exquisite sculptures challenge convention withbold color, dramatic forms and extraordinary composition. The film highlights thecollaborative qualities of Chihuly’s creative process, in which he entrusts hun-dreds of talented glassblowers to execute his vision.
