This last year we are proud of the steps we have taken to separate ourselves from all other campuses by leading the way in academ- ics, athletics and service to our community. We take great pride in competing at a high level in all that we do and continually focus on ways to improve. While we take time to celebrate 12 region athletic championships, bring home top Student Council Awards and honor our first AP Capstone graduates, we also look internally at ways we can improve and provide an environment where all students can flourish. Over the last few years we have taken a close look at what families want along with what has the greatest impact on our students. We have focused tremendously on supporting every student while recruiting many of the top educators in the business. Our numbers in honors and advanced courses have doubled over the last few years with Red Mountain students leading the entire state of Arizona in college credits attained prior to graduation. Equally as exciting is that our students have a 94% course passing rate across all subject areas and Red Mountain has been recognized as one of the top Math schools in Arizona. Principal’s Welcome

Welcome to the 2017-18 school year at Red Mountain High School, one of the top per-forming institutions in the state of Arizona. This last year we are proud of the steps we have taken to separate ourselves from all other campuses by leading the way in academ-ics, athletics and service to our community.

Focusing on areas of improvement we must look no further than our own expectations for the entire Red Mountain community. Below you will find commitments for all of us as we continue to improve.

Administration/Faculty/Staff will:

1) Update all grades on a weekly basis - Parent/Student Portal will be official grade (not Canvas) and updated each week to assist with providing an ongoing record of stu-dent progress through course content

2) Respond to all student and/or parent communications within 24 hours - Customer service is a huge priority for Red Mountain as all admin/faculty/staff are here to serve our community

Students will (to be successful we must be in class):

1) Be to school on time - 1st hour Sweep will be utilized for any students entering class after the 8:00 am bell. All subsequent hours will be monitored by faculty and report-ed to admin as needed

2) Keep cell phones out of view unless requested by faculty member - Cell phones have become an increasingly difficult item to manage as students (and adults) are often distracted by messages, e-mails, and games thus missing out on important instruction

Parents will:

1) Trust in the process - Partner with faculty members by communicating directly to teachers as questions arise – It is important for faculty members and parents to work to-gether as partners in a child’s education

2) Get involved with supporting Red Mountain HS – From our outstanding parent sup-port organization (ABC Boosters) to our numerous activity and athletic parent groups, Red Mountain is a great place to get involved

When these commitments become part of our daily routine there is very little doubt that our academic performance and community support will be at an all-time high. This is an incredible community which continues to expect excellence on a daily basis. We have committed ourselves to this cause and look forward to a record setting 2017-18 school year.

Laptop Protection Plan

This year students will again be using the Lenovo laptop devices. They will be issued the same device that they turned in at the end of the 2016-

2017 school year. Please be sure that you have paid for any outstanding debts associated with your student’s device, such as missing power

cords, cracked covers, missing stylus, etc. If you are unsure about these debts, contact the Bookstore.

Parents will be given the opportunity to purchase a protection plan through the district. The plan costs $30.00 per device each school year and

includes a co-pay fee for each repair and a $200.00 fee for each lost or stolen device. The plan must be purchased BEFORE the device is checked

out. If parents want to purchase the protection plan at a later date, the student must take the device to the Tech Department to be looked over

and they will give the student a form to take to the Bookstore along with the $30.00 payment.

A Technology Device User Agreement MUST be received by the Tech Department when a laptop device is checked out. See the last page.

Honors and AP

English students

Attention Junior and Senior AP English students and parents. If you are an incoming Junior AP Language and Composition, or Senior AP Literature and Composition student, there IS summer work to be completed. For juniors, it is HIGHLY recommended that you begin and/or finish the work before the 2017-18 school year begins, though the work is not technically due until August 21st. For seniors, there is reading you are expected to have done before the first day of the 2017-18 school year. There is NOT an assignment for incoming Honors freshmen OR sophomores. To access the summer work for Junior AP Language and Senior AP Literature, go to the English Department web site by clicking on the Academics links then choosing English, or simply go to http:// www.mpsaz.org/rmhs/academics/english/. Once on the English Department web page, choose the link that corresponds to the course you will be taking in the fall. If you have any questions about the assignment, contact the teacher(s) listed on the respective assignments.

ATTENTION

Graphing Calculators

Graphing calculators are an essential everyday tool for learning mathematics. The technological capabilities of these calculators allow us to study concepts in more depth. Some problems will require the use of a graphing utility. Therefore, Red Mountain High School strongly recommends that all students purchase a Texas Instruments graphing calculator from the TI-84 family. These are the calculators most widely used by high school students and on the AzMERIT Test. A classroom will function more smoothly and effectively if all students use a similar calculator.

What calculator do you recommend?

We recommend the TI-84 Plus or TI84 Plus CE color calculator. This calculator will include all the features necessary for Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Discrete, AP Statistics, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus and AP Calculus. (See comparison chart link

http://education.ti.com/en/us/product-resources/graphing_course_comparision)

What if we cannot afford a calculator at this time?

All classrooms will have a set of 20 calculators students may use during class. There are also online or smartphone options available for use at home. If you cannot afford a calculator, talk to your math instructor when school begins. There is a limited supply of calculators we can loan to families in financial need and/or going through financial hardships.

Math Department

PROJECT M. E. S. A. GRADE 9 INFORMATION

This year all ninth grade students will have the opportunity to attend Project M.E.S.A. (Mesa's Education in Sexual Aware-ness), an abstinence only program. During this four-day presentation of one-hour lessons, boys and girls are taught separately in two sessions. The curriculum presented will encourage sexual abstinence before marriage and emphasize the possible consequences of teenage sexual activity, including pregnancy and STDs (sexually transmitted diseases). In the remaining two sessions of Project M.E.S.A., boys and girls are taught together. These lessons focus on dating violence prevention, respect for one another, and healthy relationships. The exact order of each session may vary due to availabil-ity of space to accommodate the students. PARENT PERMISSION IS ABSOLUTELY REQUIRED for participation in Project M.E.S.A. classes. Your student will receive a permission slip two weeks prior to their scheduled presentation. This form must be signed by a parent/guardian and re-turned to the teacher, whether granting permission or not. We know this is a very sensitive topic and encourage you to discuss it with your child. We want you to have a complete understanding of this program so you can make an informed decision regarding your child’s participation. A parent meeting will be conducted at Mesa High Auditorium on Wednesday, August 17, 2016, 7:00 pm. Videos and teaching ma-terials will be available at your school two weeks prior to instruction. To review, please call your student's school or the Curriculum Service Center at 472-0260. Please visit our website www.mpsaz.org/ssrc/health/project_mesa/ for date of instruction for your student.

First Hour Sweep!

Last August, Red Mountain implemented a modified Sweep program for first hour. When students arrived late to first hour they had to complete a reflection as to why they were tardy and what they could do to change their actions to be on time to school. We saw a decrease the number of students being late to school during the 2016-17 school year. However, the number tardies were significantly fewer when we had a full Sweep program prior to 2015 school year. Red Mountain will be returning to the original Sweep program for first hour only during the 2017-18 school year. The full attendance, tardy policy and additional Sweep information can be found under School Info then Attendance on the Red Mountain’s webpage. To help our parents and students understand how Sweep will work we have described the process below.

Students who do not arrive to first hour class on time will be redirected to the Sweep room. Students who are late to school will need their parent to physically come into the attendance office and sign-in their student. If a parent fails to follow this procedure, their student will be sent to the Sweep room. While in Sweep, students will not be able to work on assignments, socialize or use any electronic device (music, texting, internet, games, etc.) Procedures will be in place for students to make up class work and tests that they may have missed when they were in Sweep. All students will be informed of how the Sweep program will be integrated into their school day.
