Red House Times Autumn 2017
Dear Parents
The summer was an extremely
busy term full of exciting trips,
talks and performances. I
was particularly delighted
with our school production
of Oliver! The children were
truly outstanding and it was
wonderful to see the whole
school community coming
together. It was also lovely to
meet previous cast members
who came to support the show. I am excited about our plans to
hold an alumni social event in the very nearer future.
Other highlights of the summer term included the Prep &
Senior Prize Givings and the Nursery & Infant Festival of
Achievement as well as sports days and fixtures. Our Year
11 pupils were once again extremely successful in the GCSE
examinations and it was wonderful to see the pupils, staff and
families celebrating together on results' day.
My focus continues to be our pupils; making sure we excel
in all areas of learning whilst providing the best possible
environment for them in which they can flourish. Our
refurbishment programme is well underway with lots of
transformations in the pipeline.
I am proud of Red House, our truly unique school, where we
encourage children to develop a love of learning through
our warm, supportive and family-orientated environment.
As my first year comes to a close, I am proud of what we have
achieved and excited by what we can achieve. Thank you for
joining us on our journey.
With best wishes

Achievements
Congratulations to all of our pupils who received their GCSE
results. We achieved a 100% pass rate with 94% at A*-C and 41% of
the GCSE exam taken achieved A or A* grade. Whilst former Head
Girl, Kate gained 13A*s and Head Boy, Sam gained 11A*s; we are
proud of the achievements of all of the children.
Kate said: “I can’t believe it and I’m over the moon. It’s great to see
all my hard work has paid off.”
Sam added: “I’m very happy and proud with how I have
done. After working so hard, it feels great to achieve the results I
have. I can’t believe I got the highest possible grade A^ (equivalent
to an A**).”
Everyone at Red House was delighted with the results and it was
wonderful to see the pupils, staff and families celebrating together.
We believe that our school’s size is fundamental to our success.
We are proud that we are a small school. It enables our teachers
to understand our pupils’ unique personalities, interests and
strengths, offering a bespoke education tailored to each child.
Mr James said: “We encourage each and every child to punch
above their weight and strive to do their best, which is evident from
this year’s results.”

Japanese throughout the summer holidays
and then competed against other schools
in the region in a number of challenging
rounds. Only three pupils were selected
to go through to the national final in
London and we were delighted that they
were all from Red House! Joshua, George
and Gabriel are now looking forward to
learning Zulu in preparation for the final
where they will compete against the top 30
linguists in the country. Maths Challenge We were very successful in the UK Intermediate Maths

Investment in FacilitiesWe are continuing to investment in our
facilities at Red House. During the October
half term the pupil entrance at the Prep &
Senior School is undergoing a makeover and
planning is well underway for refurbishing
the Sports Hall. Future developments will
include a new outdoor learning space for the
Nursery & Infant School.
Prize Giving & Festival of Achievement With the investment in the new
retractable seating we were able to hold
this year’s Prize Giving ceremonies at
the Prep & Senior School. Prize Giving is
always a joyous occasion where we look
back on all the great successes of the
year, as well as acknowledging pupils
who have excelled in many parts of
school life; not just academic success.
The Festival of Achievement for Years
1-3 was also a delight. Pupils spoke
about the highlights of the year and
performed some wonderful songs.
Their special guest, Mr James, even
joined them in singing the Joseph
Megamix!
Poetry by Heart Romilly and Erin in Year 10 gave excellent
recitals at the county round of the national
Poetry by Heart competition. They both
worked extremely hard learning their
poems. Romliy recited ‘Originally’ and
‘Epitaph’ and Erin recited ‘When that I was
a little tiny boy’ and ‘Divorce’.

We are extremely proud of all of our pupils
and staff who put the amazing production
of Oliver together; it was a huge success.

Technicolour Dreamcoat.

Assemblies Children have delivered a number
of assemblies at the Prep & Senior
School which were both informative
and entertaining! Topics have included
‘Languages Spoken Around The
World’ (over half of the assembly
was performed in French), ‘WW II’,
‘Apartheid’ and ‘May Day’.
At the Nursery & Infant School Mrs
Tayler held a music assembly where
our developing musicians were able to
showcase their talents.
Spring Concert Children of all ages showcased their
musical talents covering many styles
of music and dance. There were some
spectacular solo performances and
the audience was even treated to a few
acts from the Red House Has Got Talent
competition.

Bringing Learning to Life
French CaféYear 3 enjoyed dressing up as French
waiters and waitresses, whilst serving
breakfast to their parents and
grandparents at the annual French
café. They also played instruments and
performed French songs. They thoroughly
deserved their croissants and pain au
chocolat at the end!
HinduismDr Krishnamurty, Pranav's mother,
visited Year 1 to talk to the children about
Hinduism. She showed them pictures of a
Hindu Temple, dressed them up in Sari’s
and brought them Hindu sweets to enjoy.
Pranav showed the children the deities that
his family have on their shrine at home.

Story WritingYears 7 and 8 took part in a story
writing project where they created
handmade, personalised storybooks
for the children in Nursery and
Reception. The first stage involved
visiting the children to talk to them
about their likes and dislikes. They
then produced their storybooks
and read them to the children. The
Nursery and Reception children were
delighted to be given the books as
gifts to take home.

Medical AttentionAs part of their Citizenship Programme Year 6 pupils were given a talk by the British Red
Cross about how to help people who need medical attention. Pupils practised the recovery
position so that the patient would be safe until medical help arrived.
Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) The RNLI gave a very fun and informative
talk about water safety. Joshua especially
enjoyed spraying water over Mr Maude to
represent the rough seas!
Father’s DayNursery children welcomed their
dads, grandads, uncles and cousins
for a special Father’s Day coffee break.
They sang themed songs and made a
superhero for their own superhero!

Trips & Tours
Under the Sea Reception children visited the Blue Reef Aquarium to
learn more about creatures that live in the sea. They had
lots of fun seeing and touching different sea creatures.
Afterwards they visited Souter Lighthouse to learn how a
lighthouse works and why they are important.
Backstage TourNursery children enjoyed a special backstage tour of Tesco. They
discovered what happens to food before it goes onto the shelves. They
explored the cold freeze area and even tasted some cheese and fruit.
Travel Back in TimeYear 1 went back in time to become servants at Ormesby Hall.
The children learnt how to wash, iron, cook and set the table
using old fashioned tools and artefacts.
-
Medieval Monks Year 2 had a fabulous day at Fountains Abbey learning all about
medieval monks as part of their RE topic.
12Red House Times Autumn 2017
Behind the PortraitThe English department took Year 7 to The Bowes Museum. They
took part in a workshop called ‘Behind the Portrait’ which saw
pupils choose individual portraits and write creatively about who
that person may have been and what sort of life they may have lived.
In the afternoon they took part in a creative printing workshop.
MinibeastsYear 4 had a lovely transition day visiting RSPB Saltholme. They got
up close and personal with minibeasts in three different habitats:
long grass, bushes and a pond.
Roseberry Topping Children in Year 3 recorded wind speed and temperature as
they climbed Roseberry Topping. They also produced some
super sketches.
-
13 Red House Times Autumn 2017
Discovering Warkworth Castle Year 7 put their history and geography
skills to the test at Warkworth Castle.
They were challenged with finding out
the purpose of the ‘secret’ cavity in one of
the keep’s walls and also uncovering the
reason why a flight of stairs led straight
down to a solid wall.
After leaving the castle they used their map
skills to navigate around the area to identify
features marked on the map. They then
recapped their rivers knowledge and also
learnt how to identify some common plants
in the area.
The Big SingPupils from Years 3 and 4 had a brilliant
time at 'The Big Sing’ held at the Sage
Gateshead. There were over 15 famous
songs from the stage and screen
including Mary Poppins and Disney.
Everyone had lots of fun singing in such a
spectacular venue.
Viking Settler Year 3 had a fantastic experience living
the life of a Viking settler at Danelaw. They
made bread, oil lamps, tended to the
garden and even protected the settlement
from Saxon invaders! One Saxon slave,
Miss Thompson, was a little lazy so she was
put in the stocks as punishment!
-
14Red House Times Autumn 2017
VindolandaThe Latin club visited Vindolanda as
part of their Minimus Latin studies. The
first area they visited was the bath-
house where pupils got their first look at
some Roman toilets before moving into
the fort proper. When asked to stand
at the corner of the fort’s outer walls,
the children were surprised to see that
there weren’t any, as Roman forts have
rounded corners like playing cards.
This was to stop anyone hiding around
corners or bumping into each other!
The various rooms and buildings
within the fort were studied, and as
Vindolanda is a working archaeological
site, the pupils also got to meet some
real archaeologists at work and were
shown a find from the morning – a
red/orange playing piece (like one we
might use for a game of draughts).
The visit was completed with a visit
to the gift shop where lots of Roman
swords were bought followed by
a quick sword fight in the grounds
around the reconstructed towers!

15 Red House Times Autumn 2017
Duke of EdinburghSixteen pupils from Year 10 took part
in their Duke of Edinburgh expedition.
Everyone had fun navigating their way
across hills, valleys and wooded areas
using a map and compass. They had to
carry all their own equipment; tents,
stoves and sleeping bags for their
adventure. Pupils enjoyed cooking their
own meals – the bacon sandwiches for
breakfast were very popular and evening
meals included a chicken stir fry and pasta
with chorizo sausage!
Geography Residential Trip Year 10 pupils visited Blencathra, near Keswick, as part of their
Geography field trip. Whilst walking and exploring Cat Bells they
gathered data so they could use their findings to see what happens
to footpaths when climbing up mountains. After analysing their
results in the classroom they took part in some fun team activities
on the low ropes.
Prisoner of War CampTo support their learning of the Second World War Year 9 visited
Eden Camp. At the museum they experienced the sights, sounds
and smells of life on the Home Front and the Front Line. As an ex
Prisoner of War (POW) camp, pupils were able to contemplate the
differences between how POWs were treated in different countries
and what life for a POW in England was like.

work. At the end of the session the Team
Northumbria players spent lots of time
answering questions from pupils and
signing autographs.
We met Leah, Katarina and the rest of the
team once again during our trip to watch
Team Northumbria play Celtic Dragons,
one of their final matches of the season. The
girls picked up lots of tips and continue to be
inspired to put out their best performances.
A special mention goes to Olivia Small who
went from achieving excellent GCSE results
to then represent the North East Region
within the U19 National Performance
League two days later! Her team finished
a respectable fourth place over-all in the
country; a fantastic achievement for Olivia
and her team!

Our athletes were truly outstanding at this
event and it was certainly a memorable day
for all athletes involved!
We had 32 pupils that competed with 25
pupils gaining a podium finish in at least one

CricketStockton Girls' Cricket Festival, Norton
Both our A and B teams played in this
event. The A team eased through the
group stages, won their semi-final and final
with 20 runs to spare and went through
to represent Stockton in the Durham
County Final. The icing on the cake from
the Stockton festival was that our B team
competing in the event managed to qualify
for the Plate competition in the afternoon.
They reached the final of the Plate and were
also awarded Gold medals for their efforts!
FootballU11 ISA North Girls' Football Festival, Manchester
All the girls played with great enthusiasm
at the football festival and were brilliantly
led by captain Maya Dowson. Our team
won two, drew three and lost two. At
the end of the afternoon, and out of 8
Sports Round Upschools competing, the girls came a
very respectable fourth place; a great
achievement especially as it was the first
football match for most of the players!
RoundersYears 4, 5 and 6 played some fantastic
rounders, most notably, some great
batting from Scarlett Carton and Lexi Edge
and bowling from Aimee Caswell. The
future looks bright for rounders with some
good links developing on field between
Keerthika Prasanna, Loveday Duncan-
Whitfield and Amelia Neve and the rest of
the team. Well done to all the girls involved!
NetballAt the very end of the netball season,
Years 5 and 6 were rewarded with
a special masterclass led by Team

CricketThe highlight of the U11s cricket season
was the ISA North Cricket tournament
where the boys put in some excellent
performances to be crowned champions.
They started the tournament with
two comfortable wins against Queen
Ethelburga’s and Scarisbrick College. This
led to a semi-final against a strong team
from Highfield Priory where the boys
needed to be at their best to get a positive
result. Some aggressive batting and some
accurate bowling from every member of
the team secured a 14 run victory and a
place in the final against QE. The boys
rounded off an excellent day with another
positive performance to be crowned ISA
North Cricket Champions.
