BASIC FACTS ABOUT RED FORT Built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan as his capital

Shahjahanabad in 1648

Built in the Mughal Architecture style of Domes and in Red Sandstone hence the name Red Fort or “Lal Kila”

UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2007

Located in the banks of the River Yamuna at the Historic Chandni Chowk Area of Old Delhi

Important as the Prime Minister of the Country hoists the flag and addresses the Nation from the Red Fort every year on 15th August.

IMPORTANCE OF RED FORT IN DELHI TOURISM

A. One of the trinity of UNESCO World Heritage Sites viz. Red Fort , Qutub Minar and Humayun Tomb

B. The ticket sales saw a revenue of 6.14 Crores in 2014 (ASI Data)

C. In the vicinity of Jama Masjid, Sis Ganj Gurudwara, Chandni Chowk Market, Raj Ghat and the Yamuna River.

D. Was the seat of Delhi’s Power from Shah Jahan till Bahadur Shah Zafar the Second

B. Extreme traffic distress on the Chandni Chowk- Lal Kila intersection.

C. Improper connection to Metro (Chandni Chowk in Yellow Line)

D. Problems of harassments by Beggars and Other Sundry shop keepers in the Vicinity.

E. Illegal and Untrained Guides operating with the support of the local cops. Fleecing of the foreigners coming to Red Fort

HOW CAN THE GOVERNMENT IMPROVE THE RED FORT

A. Stricter penalties for littering especially in the ASI Monuments

B. Making the way connecting Kashmiri gate to Raj ghat as One way

C. Decongesting the roads and providing feeders to the Metro.

D. Only the registered shopkeepers allowed in the premises. Regular checking and removing the unregistered souvenir shops.

E. Setting up of a tourism Police like in Jaipur for major tourist places in Delhi

HOW CAN THE GENERAL PUBLIC IMPROVE THE RED FORT

A. Using Bio Degradable products like Paper, Pateela etc. Please do not litter any where near the monument.

B. Use Public Transport to reduce the congestion.

C. Use the walkaway path from Haldirams and Nataraj.

D. Please do not encourage shopkeepers and Beggars. If you see any one harassing you or any one else, please report the same to the Police or ASI authorities.

E. Using the Audio guides which is available in the ticket counter and avoiding the touts and illegal guides in the premises.
