Red Cat Jazz Café is synonymous with the Houston jazz scene. Red Cat Jazz Café has been recognized by the Greater Houston Convention & Visitor’s Bureau for being legendary pioneers in Houston’s jazz scene; in fact, Red Cat is often credited for putting Houston’s jazz on the map. On October 10 -13 ,2013, Red Cat Jazz Preservation Society will be hosting its annual Jazz Festival in Galveston, Texas on the grounds of Beach Central Park. The theme for the festival: Discover the World Jazz. The 2013 festival will feature the following: This is the 4rd Annual Red Cat Jazz Festival, however, we are taking our show on road to the beautiful Galveston’s Beach Central Park with a 50th Anniversary of music icon Ronnie Laws. A host of celebrity artist that Laws has worked with over the years will join him in this celebration, final lineup to be announced.

Four days of Non-stop Live Jazz Concerts featuring a variety of local and international jazz artists include Ronnie Laws & friends among others.

A “Lunch with the Legends Jazz Event”, an intimate, up-close-and-personal luncheon with festival headliners as they share their personal stories, their love for jazz, and the evolution of the art form. The Red Cat Jazz Legend Award is presented to a live jazz legend at this event.

A “Students of the Sound Jazz Scholarship Seminar”, an event targeted toward young musicians from local universities that have a passion for jazz. The seminar will be presented by professional jazz musicians, and scholarships are presented to selected students at this event.

The Red Cat Jazz Festival and its auxiliary events are anticipated to attract an estimated 10,000 people into the city of Houston and offers exceptional branding and sponsorship opportunities for organizations seeking to brand themselves to a mature, sophisticated audience of jazz lovers. The Red Cat Jazz Festival is an exhibition of the rich heritage of jazz music, celebrating its past, pioneering its present, and nurturing its future. The festival, previously a one-day event, has evolved into a holiday weekend festival, filled with four days of non-stop live jazz music, brought to Texas jazz lovers by local, national and international musicians. The event also features an event designed to honor jazz legends and an event designed to provide scholarships for up and coming student jazz musicians.

Where Will the 2013 Red Cat Jazz Festival be Held?

Galveston Island, Texas will serve as the backdrop for this year’s blockbuster event. The Red Cat Jazz Festival will descend upon the grounds of the Beach Central Park @ the Historic Galvez Hotel and Spa with four days of live smooth jazz, blues and gospel concerts. The Beach Park property is located at 2102 Seawall Blvd, Galveston Island, Texas.

How Many People Are Anticipated to Attend the 2013 Red Cat Jazz Festival?

The 2010 & 2011 Jazz Festival attracted more than 5,000 people to its concert in Jones Plaza. The 2012 Pearland saw over 7,500. An analysis of feedback from festival guests consistently included requests to expand the festival into a multi-day event. Thus, by popular demand, the Red Cat Jazz Festival has been expanded into a three day event over the Columbus Day weekend. Based upon festival projections, the expansion of festival dates combined with the momentum from the first festival, the overall festival attendance is anticipated to increase 50% to 100%, or 7,500 – 10,000 guests.

2013 Red Cat Jazz Festival: AttractionsWhat New Attractions will the 2013 Festival Feature?

Red Cat for Pink! In observance of Breast Cancer awareness month the 2013 Red Cat Jazz Festival will join the annual international health campaign to increase awareness of the disease. The Red Cat Jazz Festival will host an opening night reception and concert featuring “Jazz in Pink”A portion of the proceeds will be donated to local entities that provide information and support to those affected by breast cancer.

Red Cat Jazz Festival Golf Classic is a one-day event, on Friday, October 11th, at Moody Gardens Golf Course.The Red Cat Jazz Festival invites golfers of all levels and abilities to participate. Golfers to play in honor of breast cancer awareness, or in celebration of a breast cancer survivor. Each person will be recognized at the tournament. A portion of the proceeds from this event will benefit local Breast Cancer service organizations.

50th Anniversary Celebrating the Laws of Music This year’s concert kicks off to our 10th year celebration and the 50th anniversary of music legend Ronnie Laws.Laws is scheduled to perform with along with a plethora of celebrity jazz artists which Laws has accompanied throughout the years. We will continue to explore new sounds, new fusions, and new mixtures of jazz-based music – the types of sounds that are produced when artists courageously step out of the bounds of the traditional jazz scene and explore the jazz sound to discover “something different”. In addition to jazz favorites, expect to encounter new jazz-based sounds.

Lunch with the Legends Jazz Event. Designed to honor jazz legends, this event will be an intimate, up-close-and-personal luncheon with festival headliners as they share their personal stories, their love for jazz, and the evolution of the art form. The Red Cat Jazz Legend Award, named after the Festival’s Presenting Sponsor(s) is presented to a live jazz legend at this event.

Students of the Sound Jazz Scholarship Seminar Designed to develop the next generation of jazz, this event is targeted toward young musicians from local universities that have a passion for jazz in a setting where they can learn, ask questions, build hope, and gain inspiration from their established jazz counterparts. The seminar is presented by real live jazz musicians, and scholarships (given in honor of Festival sponsors) are presented to selected students at this event.

Sunday Gospel Brunch An addition to the 2013 line-up will be the gospel brunch featuring some of Gospel music’s impactful artist. One of the most significant aspects of today’s Jazz world is the number of professing Christians and notable genre contributors who perform as major Jazz artists, true to the form musically, but who are just as true to their calling to dedicate their lives and musical talents wholly or in part, respectively, to the cause of the Gospel through recorded and live Gospel Jazz works and performances.

2013 Red Cat Jazz Festival Celebrates Jazz 50 Years with Ronnie Laws

Born October 3, 1950 as Ronald Wayne Laws, he’s a younger brother of famous jazz flautist Hubert Laws.

In 1972, he joined the fledgling group Earth, Wind & Fire, playing saxophone and flute on their album “Last Days And Time”. He left the band soon afterwards, long before they achieved their huge commercial success.

In 1975, he began his solo career with the album “Pressure Sensitive”, on which his most famous instrumental song, “Always There”, was included. It became an instant jazz-funk classic, covered by numerous artists.

Laws has also recorded with numerous other artists, including Arthur Adams, Howard Hewett, Ramsey Lewis, Jeff Lorber, Hugh Masekela, Alphonse Mouzon, David Sea, and Sister Sledge.
