President’s Piece for November 2019 Welcome to the 2019-2020 AGM for Red Caps Golf Incorporated. This has been my first year as president of Red Caps and I wish to express my thanks to this Committee for their kindness in easing my path, and their competence in their particular areas. Thanks also to the Starters – Arthur, Neil and Glenn, with Peter and Les stepping into the breach at a moment’s notice, when required. My aim was to continue “business as usual” adding a few new events to enhance enjoyment, and ironing out admin-istrative issues with Maroondah Golf along the way. Some of these issues continue to be a work in progress, but we are dealing with them as they arise, supporting our position as a significant User Group on this course, playing 5261 games in our year just finished. Most people are happy to go along with the changes, but I do understand that it sometimes takes longer to please everyone; but we try. In making suggestions, let’s avoid criticism and speak in terms of improvements you’d like to see. Financially, as you will hear shortly, we continue to be in good shape without fee increases for the coming year, thanks to Spanner’s good management. We have received sponsorship for which we are most grateful, from Callo-way, House of Golf, Maroondah Golf, Mr Fox and others (with wine). It enables us to continue our prize programs without extra incursion into our fees, also to make charitable donations as part of our charter. Socially we are in good shape, with activities like the Rich River trip, Ladies Morning Coffee and chat sessions and our impending Christmas function, all well attended. I have heard that some of you are a bit slow with passing on announcements of ladies coffee mornings, so please include your lady in what is proving to be a very enjoyable as-sociation. Our member numbers are holding up, although we are not pushing as hard now for new members, as we are close to the limit with accommodation and tee-times. Some of our members are struggling physically with vari-ous challenging illnesses and injuries. We wish them well. I was asked recently to investigate the availability of a discount for motorized carts – Maroondah Golf will offer a discount of 10%, making the cost of a cart for 9 holes $27 instead of the usual $30. Our bulltish sessions after golf are always enjoyed as are our monthly BBQs in the warmer months. Thanks to those who pitch in to help. The Matchplay sessions have again proved popular resulting in a win to Wayne Banks. Our signature events have been well contested, giving everyone a chance to appear on the Honour Board. Congratulations to the winners of those categories in 2019. We presented Peter Denier with a print of Bob McDowell's original artwork "Red Caps on First Tee at Ringwood 2019", in recognition of his tireless work in Committee and as President for 8 years prior to 2019. Peter's enthusiasm and positivity will still be enjoyed every playing day. Jim Dean has joined our Committee in the role of Welfare Officer. He has extensive, high level experience in sports administration and I feel sure will make a valuable contribution to our group. Cheers to our sick and injured, Happy golfing, Roger Henderson

Course Care— As all industries evaluate their use of plastics, golf’s reliance on it for tees has made headlines at England’s Royal North Devon Golf Club, the country’s oldest golf course. The club re-leased a statement to explain the decision to ban the use of plastic tees on its grounds, “We have all seen golf tees lying around the course, both wooden and plastic,” the club’s statement reads. “The simple fact is that plastic tees are more likely to harm the birds and animals we share our wonderful course with.” Royal North Devon, a members club that is also open to the public, sits on the Westward Ho! beach, and the club cited instances of its plastic tees ending up on the beach, along with other environmental considerations, as the reasons for the ban.

The club says it will only sell wooden tees in its pro shop starting January 1, and it will provide extra tee bins next to each set of tees to encourage golfers to place discarded tees in the bins.

Have your say: What does the future of Golf look like in Maroondah?

Council is currently seeking your thoughts on the recommendations outlined in the Maroondah Golf Strategic Review stage one report (4.13 MB PDF)(External link).

Council owns and operates two 18-hole golf courses in Maroondah, being Dorset and Ringwood Golf, collectively known as Maroondah Golf. Both facilities cover approximately 80 hectares (approximately 198 acres) of Maroondah’s open space.

Maroondah Golf generally experiences good visitation rates. Trends occurring across both facili-ties show some increase in non-competition (social) golf, while competition golf remains steady. This change is also apparent sector wide, as reflected in the Victorian Government’s Planning for Golf in Victoria discussion paper.

The stage one report, developed by WellPlayed Golf Business Consultants, identifies both chal-lenges and opportunities for the future of golf in Maroondah. To achieve long-term sustainability, the report recommends alternate golf and entertainment/hospitality experiences, with the aim to increase participation and appeal to a broader audience.

Gaining a deeper insight into golf’s changing landscape has also given Council the opportunity to look at sport in Maroondah more broadly. Council recently undertook a sports demand analysis which has indicated there will be more than 46,000 people participating in more than 33 differ-ent sports by the year 2021. The analysis indicated significant growth is expected for soccer, bas-ketball, and female sports participation.

Stage two of the Maroondah Golf Strategic review aims to explore two proposed key elements. Feedback on these elements will help shape the strategic direction for golf, and/or other sports in Maroondah. The proposed elements include:

Golf experiences and facilities

To enhance golf participation, the stage one report recommended exploring a greater range of golf offerings to make our facilities more appealing to a broader audience, such as:

• Mini golf, a family friendly premium mini-golf facility complemented by an expanded/enhanced hospitality offering (note providing a mini golf facility may require a modification to current golf holes, however 18 golf holes would be retained)

• Driving range, ideal for practice or entertainment with a mix of traditional and premium bays that would cater for a diverse range of age groups and abilities (note this element would re-quire a reduction in existing golf holes resulting in a shorter format) • Enhanced Pavilion, this could include:

• Virtual golf lounge, an indoor golf experience for all ages and complemented by an expand-ed/enhanced hospitality offering

• Expanded retail or hospitality options such as additional golf shop items, food and beverage enhancements, and the potential for community functions and events, that would comple-ment other experiences

Sport and Recreation Opportunities

The changing landscape in golf participation provides an opportunity to respond to the broader community’s future needs and requirements for additional sport and recreation facilities/areas. New trends are emerging with significant growth projected for soccer and basketball, particularly in relation to female sports participation. The capacity to expand existing sporting facilities within Maroondah to meet this growing demand is severely limited.

The following proposals explore:

• Modification of golf holes and the provision of facilities to meet the growing demand for Bas-

ketball; • Reduction in golf holes and the provision of facilities and sportsfields to meet the growing de-

mand for Soccer and/or other sports We are encouraging key user groups and the broader community to provide feedback on the pro-posed elements. Consultation closes Sunday 15 December, 2019.
