Maths Olympiad in progress
College’s senior quiz team finished in 3rd place in the interschool quiz
Academic Achievements
School Olympiads
It’s at this time of year that our top academic achievers are given the opportunity to compete in a range of Olympiads; these are national events written annually by 5th and 6th formers who achieved 80% and more in June of the previous year. For the Science Olympiad, boys have two options; Life Science or Physical Science. The two boys who achieve the highest marks are invited to the National Science Week in Johannesburg in June. Some of our boys have also written Maths, English and Zulu Olympiads with similar criteria. College typically has high achievers every year in these events,
and we look forward to this year’s results.
Quizzing… College entered senior and junior teams in the recent interschools quiz held at The Wykeham Collegiate, where they were up against a range of high schools. The senior team performed extremely well finishing in 3rd place while the junior team ended tied for fourth position.
VOCABAFRICA winner Tristan Bookhan (Form 6) was recently announced as the winner of the Grade 12 Section for VOCABAFRICA. Tristan won R200 as well as a book voucher worth R300 from Exclusive Books.
The first VocabAfrica competition was held in 2013 for five schools in the Eastern Metropole of the Western Cape. In September and October 2015, Kwa-Zulu Natal were included in the event, and approximately 2300 learners took part. The main aim of VocabAfrica is to improve the vocabulary of learners by means of quarterly, online tests.
Khanyisa grows…
The first term of 2018 saw many successes for the Khanyisa Peer Tutoring programme. Our troupe of peer tutors showed ample enthusiasm and commitment in helping students from less privileged schools increase their competence in Mathematics and Physical Science.
From term 2, we will be including English as part of the Khanyisa programme and Mrs Lindiwe Mthembu will team up with Mrs Suzanne Webley (Maths) and Mrs Mary-Ann Rembold (Physical Sciences) to teach first additional language English to the Khanyisa pupils. We welcome Mrs Mthembu to the Programme and look forward to a successful year ahead!

College Culture
Interhouse Chess
College’s houses compete in 20 events during the course of the year – ranging from sporting events at both team and individual level to various cultural activities. This week, it was the turn of our chess players to fight for house points, competing in two pools before each rank played its equivalent in the final round. As has been reported in the press, there is a very high standard of chess played in the school with our A, B & C teams all recently winning their respective leagues. The competitions took place in the Victoria Hall amidst quiet murmuring and concentrated stares. Final results saw Forders finish top while Nicholsons finished in 10th place.

Socialising with GHS College’s Media Centre monitors recently had an afternoon social with Pietermaritzburg Girls High. The theme of the afternoon was vampires and many chose to dress up, with activities organised around book vampires. A great time was had by all.
Outreach – Barns House The Muslim Student Association (MSA) has started a water project to bring relief to the people who cannot afford drinking water in Cape Town. The water project has been a success with Maritzburg College sending around 500 litres of water to Cape Town. The Barns House boys raised a sterling R 700 towards the project – thank-you boys!

A key part of the familiar College landscape is the World War 1 memorial opposite Clark House bearing the names of fallen OCs. This special part of
our school history has undergone a recent facelift with cleaning of the brickwork as well as sealing to prevent/deter future fungal growth.

Sporting Spotlight
Pmb Day – College takes on St Charles, Voortrekker, Carter, Howick & Linpark
The past weekend saw the curtains open on the winter sport season, featuring a full programme against PMB schools opposition. The main fixtures were all against St Charles, with the 2nd XV taking on Voortrekker 1st team.
This was the first time that College has played St Charles in a full down-the-line fixture in 41 years. Our boys also played in a number of other matches on the stagger against Voortrekker, Carter, Linpark and Howick in the various age groups. Final results included convincing wins for both the 1st XI Hockey (5-0) and 1st XV Rugby (32-12). Overall on the Rugby front, College won 11 of the 13 games played against St Charles and drew 2. We recorded similar stats against Voortrekker winning 6 of the 8 games played and drawing 2. College lost some close games to Linpark, Carter and Howick on the stagger.
On the Hockey front, unfortunately some games were cancelled due to water-logged fields, but overall results saw College win 10 and draw 1 of the 11 games against St Charles. All in all, a great day of sport and rivalry amongst Pietermaritzburg schools.
Other Sports Some of our paddlers took part in the SA Schools Surf
Ski event on Friday in Durban and secured a number of top 10 spots. Pupils, staff and Old Boys participated in the past weekend’s Stihl Umkomaas Marathon securing a number of places in the top 20. Our Debaters enjoyed an even run against Hilton by winning 3 and losing 3, and our e-Sports team also participated this past weekend.
In other sports, including cycling and cross country, our boys are actively training ahead of a busy season of upcoming events.
We look forward to the next week of fixtures culminating in Saturday’s matches against Glenwood, with the 1st XV match televised at 14:00. The Premier Schools pre-match build-up will be shown on SS1 at 18h00 on Wednesday.

Maritzburg College Maritzburg College Old Boys Association Foundation 2018 South Coast branch fun
A big THANK YOU to Andrew Ralfe for organising a very successful and enjoyable first MCOBA function of the year. The function was held at Roger Allchin's business "Fish of the River" in Spillers Wharf, Port Shepstone. Roger and his wife Kelly went all out to decorate their restaurant in RED, BLACK and WHITE. Food was plentiful and scrumptious and we highly recommend a visit next time you are in Port Shepstone. Thank you to the Old Collegians and partners, current and prospective parents for taking the time to join us.
CollegeConnect goes live
A joint venture between the Maritzburg College Foundation and the Old Boys’ Association has resulted in the establishment of CollegeConnect.
This initiative is aimed at “putting our own first”, not only by strategically directing our support and purchase-power to the benefit of Maritzburg College, but also through looking out for the Red, Black and White and working towards our goal that every College boy be employed.
CollegeConnect:Careers aims to improve the employment opportunities for College Alumni by connecting those seeking employment with those offering job opportunities.
It is a powerful partnership between College, members of our community and businesses/organisations that recognises the value and importance of this institution.
Our CollegeConnect:Corporate partnership involves businesses donating an agreed upon percentage of the total spend by members of the College community, back to the school as bursaries and other forms of financial support.
What does this mean to you and me? By harnessing our collective buying-power and making an effort to support our corporate partners, who believe in the College brand, we can make a measurable difference to the lives of many College boys!
For more information and a directory of our corporate partners visit our website: www.collegeconnect.co.za

Progress with Shepstone House
Completion of College’s 5th boarding house, Shepstone House progressed further this week with the preparation of the beam and block deck, ahead of the pouring of the last slab, which just leaves the roof to be added. It is hoped that the new boarding house will be ready for intake in the 4th term
Campus Catchup…with Hemal Heeralal Library monitor and karate champion
Hemal Heeralal has been a library monitor for 2 years, and is a 2nd Dan Black Belt Shotokan Karate champion. Hemal has been doing karate for 11 years (since he was 6!), and is champion in the following categories; uMgungundlovu champion, KZN champion, SA open & Elite champion, and FSKA World champion
Hemal was inspired to take up karate through of his love of Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee movies, naming the Bruce Lee movie Enter the Dragon as a particular favourite. His favourite author is RL Stine and he’s loved the Goosebumps series since he was youngl. Hemal’s next mission is the Karate 1 Premier League tour in Botswana, and the library monitors (and all of the College community) wish him the best of luck.
